Speeders, your grace period is coming to an end.

Speed cameras were installed on the Interstate 695 inner loop between the exits for US 1/Belair Road and Philadelphia Road earlier in the month.

The speed limit is 55 mph, according to Safe Zones, which operates the speed camera program in partnership with Maryland State Police, the State Highway Administration, and Maryland Transportation Authority.

Stories worth talking about tonight:

Maryland’s interstate highways are clogged, and most residents in the state are trapped on those busy roads every day, giving us the dubious honor of second-most congested interstates in the country.

The new report by TRIP, a Washington, DC-based national transportation organization, says 75 percent of Maryland’s urban Interstate highways are congested during peak hours, the second-highest rate in the nation.

Maryland Reporter: Getty in red earns bipartisan praise

Gov. Larry Hogan swore in his chief legislative officer, Joe Getty, to the Court of Appeals at the State House Monday, with a big heaping of bipartisan praise. Getty brings an unusual range of experience to Maryland's highest court, having served as a Republican delegate and senator from Carroll County and chief legislative officer to both Hogan and Gov. Bob Ehrlich, in addition to his private law practice. He offers "an invaluable and unique perspective," said Hogan.

GETTY SWORN IN AS JUDGE: Joseph M. Getty, who has served in two branches of Maryland government, joined the third branch of state government Monday when he was sworn in as a judge on Maryland's highest court, writes Ovetta Wiggins in the Post.

Gov. Larry Hogan said Getty, 64, is smart, fair, reasoned, logical and has a great sense of history, writes Heather Cobun for the Daily Record. "I have the utmost confidence that he will continue to serve the state of Maryland with great honor and distinction," Hogan said.

Getty, donning his new red robes, gained bipartisan praise, Len Lazarick writes in MarylandReporter.com.

Getty sworn-in to Md. Court of Appeals

June 27, 2016 by Kevin Dayhoff

Joseph Getty was sworn in Monday morning in the House of Delegates chamber in the Maryland State House in Annapolis to represent the 3rd Appellate Judicial Circuit on the state's highest court.

Getty, a Manchester resident and former Republican state senator representing Carroll County, had most recently served as Republican Gov. Larry Hogan's chief legislative officer. He was appointed to the Maryland Court of Appeals on June 1 to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Lynne Battaglia.

Friends, family, former and current judges, and members of the General Assembly filled the legislative chamber to witness Hogan administer the oath of office for Getty to become the fifth judge from Carroll County to sit on the Court of Appeals since 1867.

Many speakers at the ceremony mentioned that Getty also made history by having served in all three branches of Maryland government — the legislative, executive branches and now the judiciary. It was a point not missed by local historian, Jay Graybeal, the former executive director of the Historical Society of Carroll County; a position also held by Getty from 1987 to 1994.

Another close colleague of Getty's in the General Assembly, David Brinkley, now secretary of the Md. Dept. of Budget and Management, remarked that Getty "represents a high level of collegiality" and that Getty joins a legacy of political leaders in a state that "is a treasure trove of history… It is rare for someone to serve in both chambers (of the General Assembly,) and the executive branch, and then go on to serve on the bench…"

He echoed the comments that he made upon the announcement of Getty's appointment June 1, "Joe is a devoted public servant who has spent his entire career and a good portion of his life in service to his community and to our state… His unquestionable integrity, deep legal expertise, and devotion to the people of Maryland make him an excellent fit for the state's highest court. I have complete confidence that he will continue to be a strong advocate for the law and our citizens while serving on the court."

This morning in the House of Delegates Chamber in the historic Md. State House, Manchester resident and Carroll Co. native son Joseph M. Getty, Esq., the chief legislative officer for the office of the Md. Gov. was sworn in to represent the 3rd Appellate Judicial Circuit on the state's highest court, the Md. Court of Appeals.

As Getty's extended family looked-on, his wife, Susan Getty, had to hold the large 1772 family Bible with both hands as the oath was administered. Afterwards she received a big kiss from the newly-minted judge; at which time a member of audience pondered with a stage whisper as to whether the kiss was congratulations for holding the Bible up that long or for her husband ascending to the highest judicial post in the state.

ETHICS IN FREDERICK: A new process for taking the politics out of ethics won support from the Frederick County Council on Tuesday, but some council members had critiques. The council voted 6-1 to affirm the confirmation of Chris Glass and Ernest Heller to the Frederick County Ethics Commission, the first nominees recommended through a five-person pilot committee that Democratic County Executive Jan Gardner empowered earlier this year, with the aim of creating a more independent ethics commission. The process found some allies on the council, Danielle Gaines of the Frederick News Post reports.

#Brexit #Leave BREAKING: BBC: In stunning decision, Britain votes to leave the E.U.

This is what happens when a government feels that it can do whatever it pleases without consequence. This is what happens when governments turn a blind to the constituency it is supposed to serve. Someone smarter than me said it best, "the EU is too bureaucratic and exerts excessive control over its members...."

This what happens when a social-welfare system runs amok. In the EU, very few folks work so that they may pay for the benefits of too many that do not work... If the EU does not reform quickly, it will collapse under its own weight and follow the example of Venezuela.

Europe: BBC: In stunning decision, Britain votes to leave the E.U. #Brexit

[BREAKING: BBC: In stunning decision, Britain votes to leave the E.U.]

LONDON —Britain was bracing at dawn Friday for a possible plunge into the unknown — an exit from the European Union — as results from a bitterly contested referendum showed a strong surge of votes to leave, against the will of the country’s political establishment.

As results poured in through Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday, the “remain” camp was increasingly despairing, while “leave” advocates expressed a growing confidence that their side had pulled off a shocking victory.

Results from much of the country had yet to be counted as of 4 a.m. local time. But areas that had reported results generally showed stronger-than-expected margins for those advocating a British exit — popularly known as Brexit.

Thursday, June 23, 2016

Prayers for Officer Caesar Goodson, peace, Baltimore and sanity as we await the outcome of the third trial of the six Baltimore Police officers as a result of the death in April 2015.

Circuit Judge Barry Williams was expected to announce his verdict this morning at 10 a.m.

In an article published today by Luke Broadwater, he noted, “If Mosby's team fails to secure a conviction against Goodson, it's unlikely she will be successful against any of the other officers, several observers said.” Thursday, June 23, 2016

A prayer for Orlando - I think that the world has gone mad. June 18, 2016 Kevin E. Dayhoff

I think that the world has gone mad. June 18, 2016 Kevin E. Dayhoff

I have struggled for the past week to arrive at the words that may adequately express a sense of horror and loss as a result of the horrific mass killings at the LGBT nightclub, Pulse, in Orlando, Florida in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 12, 2016.

I immediately sat at the computer to try and gather my thoughts. That is how writers sort things out, I guess.

After a considerable length of time in which I successfully stared-down the computer screen and listened to Amy Lee and Evanescence, and Plumb at a level where the computer warned it was damaging my ears, the computer abruptly crashed. I gave-up and went to bed.

This comes just after the news on June 7, 2016, that a Stanford star-athlete, Brock Turner, had been given a slap on the wrist for a ruthless attack on a woman on Jan. 17, 2015. His Dad rubbed salt in the wound by writing a callous and offensive appeal for leniency for his son. It was all too surreal.

Then, after the terrible news that MP Jo Cox had been killed in the streets of her constituency by a deranged attacker and reading the statement of her husband, I decided to sit at the keyboard again.

As I search for more pertinent details, as only an OCD newspaper reporter would do at a time like this; I came across a wonderful set of words on the website, “Think Christian” - https://thinkchristian.reframemedia.com/a-prayer-for-orlando I really-really hope that at time like this, “Think Christian” does not mind me reprinting it. I think this prayer says it better than anything I might come up for the moment.

I might carry it around with me – if I edit it for length, I might have opportunity to use it…

“Think Christian” said in an editor’s note: This prayer was originally published by the Christian Reformed Church’s Office of Social Justice, a sister ministry of Think Christian, in response to the June 12 shooting in Orlando, Fla. Our hope is that it encourages both prayerful lament and prayerful action.

God of comfort, we lift our prayers to you.

We lift prayers for the families, friends, and partners of the victims, for all of those who are grieving.
For the questions which have no answers, we pray.
For those who wring their hands, bring dishes of food, struggle to express their condolences, we pray.
For pastors who plan funerals and stand at hospital beds, we pray.
For those who are estranged from a loved one because of sexual orientation, and who today feel grief and loneliness, we pray.
For those who feel fresh grief because someone they love was also a victim of gun violence, we pray.

We lift prayers for the LGBTQ+ community.
Protect them from harm.
Heal them from trauma.
Lead them to places of hospitality and safety.

We lift prayers for the Muslim community.
Shield them from fallout.
Call Christians to reach out in mutuality and solidarity.
May the stories of the many Muslims who have responded in love, help, and hospitality be told often, and publicly.

We lift prayers for lawmakers.
Give them wisdom as they craft their public statements, which have an impact on real people’s lives.
Give them wisdom as they consider policy implications, which will always make some furious and others gratified.
Give them wisdom as they accept donations to their campaigns, as they align with interests, as they reach across the aisle and compromise.

Work through politics to build your kingdom, Lord.

We lift prayers for your church, which includes each one of us. May your church speak the words of Christ — of healing, hope, repentance, and good news.

We are a people who believe in resurrection. As we walk through the valley of the shadow of death in times such as these, may we see and be signs of kingdom hope. We long for the day when death will be no more.

Pastor Martha Clementson shared a children's sermon at services at Grace Lutheran Church this morning in Westminster, June 12, 2016.

The gospel message this morning, 2 Samuel 11: 26- 12: 10, 13-15; and Luke 7: 36 – 8:3 appears to have been torn from a tawdry realty talk show. Pastor Martha did a great job of bringing it to life, making sense of it and making it relevant today. She taught us lessons that we can use in the coming weeks and months. And Galatians 2: 15-21, the third gospel lesson at services this morning; glued it all together.
