Visiting the P. Graham Dunn, art, gifts, home decor... store in Dalton, Ohio

Visiting the P. Graham Dunn, art, gifts, home decor... store in Dalton, Ohio Nov. 25, 2016 Friday

It is a fascinating store that manufactures and sell woodworking products; much of which is of a patriotic, agricultural, arts and crafty, and religious theme.

The customers are predominantly Mennonite and some Amish - complete with horse and buggies outside. Another great bonus is that the clientele actually dresses appropriately to be out in public. And folks are respectful and polite. Just saying.

It is a really neat store. Almost like an art gallery... Perfect place to visit for someone who maintained his woodworking workshop and radial arm saw in the living room for fifteen years.

Say no to Black Friday - a new kind of obedience

Say no to Black Friday - a new kind of obedience

Black Friday is nuts. I will not be shopping on Black Friday or Shabby Saturday. If we refused to go out and shop, then corporate America would not force employees to work under such horrid circumstances.

If you have to go out tomorrow - treat the retail workers especially well and tip the restaurant servers extra and be sure to say "Thank you."

A New Kind of Obedience

"Like many, I try to reconcile myself to these daily humiliations through militancy over pressing issues.  But that always seems like just another diversion from the emptiness of it all.  Is it our pursuit of happiness through conspicuous consumption that is at stake?

"Is happiness a value that we can find within ourselves or must we try to purchase or acquire it?   In this pursuit of happiness, what if it is really me, my soul, and the very essence of my existence that is at stake?" (1.)

"Life has a value only when it has something valuable as its object".
HEGEL, Introduction to Philosophy of History (1852)

"Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve."  ERICH FROMM, Man for Himself, (1947)

(1.) Captured from a source that I cannot put my fingers on at the moment. If this is your image and your words - please let me know so that I may credit you. Thanks.

Hats off to Hannah Brewer. Ms. Brewer, in her role as Miss Maryland ...

Hats off to Hannah Brewer. Ms. Brewer, in her role as Miss Maryland, has done an incredibly great job of representing Carroll County and Maryland. We are so proud of her.

According to this well-written article by awesome Carroll County Times writer, Jacob deNobel, in addition to "her duties as Miss Maryland, the holiday season provides Hannah Brewer with another series of tasks.  The nonprofit she runs, Hannah's Heroes, increases production of holiday cards, gifts and care packages to be sent to military members overseas..."

Hannah Brewer attended and made a great presentation for a meeting of the Maryland Troopers Association Lodge # 20. We were quite impressed with her poise, presence and enthusiasm

Respect! Sun. Nov. 20, 2016

Nov. 14, 2016 – A Martian landing in Maryland on election night never would have guessed that Donald Trump was about to pull off the upset of the century.

That’s because Maryland is an outlier, an exception to what happens in presidential elections in the rest of the country. Political Maryland's Democratic Cocoon

Trump got slaughtered in Maryland, receiving just a little over a third of the vote. Only a few other heavily Democratic states, like Massachusetts and California, saw such lopsided Democratic victories in the presidential race won by Republican Trump.

The election map in Maryland looked surprisingly similar to the 2012 election map. Democrats have such overwhelming majorities in the densely populated Central Maryland subdivisions that this provides a protective cocoon for the party’s presidential candidate.

9 Journalists And Executives At A Leading Turkish Newspaper Are Arrested

I have not heard much more about this. Whatever became of this…? I mean, I am well aware that the political landscape in Turkey is rapidly changing… I guess I am looking for an objective quick analysis of where we are today in Turkey, with respect to the harassment of journalists. 01/14/2017 KED

9 Journalists and Executives at a Leading Turkish Newspaper Are Arrested http://n.pr/2fc4MHo

Bill Chappell, NPR: November 5, 2016

It's one of Turkey's oldest and most-respected newspapers — and that description comes from a rival. But on Saturday, the editor-in-chief, a cartoonist, and seven board members of daily newspaper Cumhuriyet were sent to prison pending trial.

Prosecutors initially ordered the nine journalists detained on Monday, as part of an anti-terrorism investigation linked to a failed coup attempt in Turkey earlier this year. Four others with ties to the newspaper, including two columnists, were released on bail Saturday.
