Federal regulators won a permanent injunction this week barring a Westminster drug company and its New Jersey parent from selling more than 50 unapproved medications, mostly prescription cough and cold products.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration filed a complaint in Baltimore's U.S. District Court on March 25 claiming that Maryland's Neilgen Pharmaceuticals, which does business under the name "Unigen," and its owner, Advent Pharmaceuticals, were selling drugs that were improperly manufactured, carried inadequate directions for use and were not FDA-approved.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Del. LeRoy E. Myers Jr., and his family upon learning the terrible news that his 23 year-old son has died in a motorcycle accident.

The son of Del. LeRoy E. Myers of Clear Spring was killed Thursday night in a motorcycle accident on Md. 63, according to Maryland State Police.

WHAT THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW
The week BEFORE the public hearing on water and sewer rate structures, a representative from Tylex Technologies in Seattle, Washington was flown into Westminster. He worked on the city computer software program and CHANGED the current water and sewer rate structure over to match the proposed rate increase.
The city followed procedure by having a public hearing, HOWEVER it was a SHAM, as the rates had already been changed by the representative at a cost of over $6,000 to the tax payers.
The city paid over $55,000 to a consultation company for the water rate study. However the city staff could have come up with the same numbers on their own. They had all the necessary information on hand.
The city’s software program itself, comes from a company in Washington State. If a problem arises, the city is billed $125 an hour for phone calls to the company. If someone has to come out to Westminster, the city has to pay ALL EXPENSES for the representative, air fare, hotel, rental car etc. PLUS THE HOURLY RATE!
There are companies within driving distance of Westminster that have similar software programs, making the cost of working on the system much less for the taxpayers. (The present system from Washington State HAS COST THE CITY OVER $300,000 SO FAR.)
In another Sham the city spent over $60,000 for consultants to look at the pay scale for city employees, although the same information could have been obtained with an online search and some phone calls to similar cities
The city spent over $7,000 to the Mercer Group to find a city manager while the city staff could have handled this task just as well and for a much cheaper cost to the taxpayer.
Time and time again the City Council, (WHICH INCLUDES SUSAN ALBERT & KEVIN UTZ) as well as, the current Mayor has RECKLESSLY SPENT YOUR TAXPAYER DOLLARS!!
THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN ON MY WATCH!!!

Planting kicks off city's tree replacement effort

WESTMINSTER — In commemorating Arbor Day, the City of Westminster Tree Commission this week announced a project to replace dead or dying trees in downtown Westminster.
As part of the effort, the city planted three cherry trees at Belle Grove Square in a ceremony April 2. At the event, Mayor Tom Ferguson read an Arbor Day proclamation.
The trees are replacements for others that were in poor health. Another three trees, also replacements due to poor health, will be planted on Willis Street in cooperation with the Parkview condominium association.
An additional 11 trees will be installed on West Main Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and John Street, replacing trees that have been removed or have died.

Obama Names Pope-Basher to Faith-Based Initiative Board
(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama has named to the federal government’s faith-based initiative a gay-rights activist who last month described Pope Benedict XVI and certain Catholic bishops as “discredited leaders” because of their opposition to same-sex marriage. Harry Knox, who is a newly appointed member of Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, is the director of the religion and faith program at the Human Rights Campaign, a homosexual activist group.
Federally Funded Group Advises Teens on How to Decide if They Are Gay (CNSNews.com) - A group that has received more than $16 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services over the past 15 years maintains Web sites that advise young people on how to decide if they are gay, how to come out to their parents and getting active in causes ranging from abortion to "comprehensive" sex education. The group says none of the federal grants it receives are used to support its Web sites.

On this day in history, President Harry Truman Seizes Control of Steel Industry -- April 8, 1952
On April 8, 1952, President Harry Truman seized control of steel industry, allowing the federal government to administer and oversee the industry. The seizure resulted after the steel producers and steel workers had been unable to reach agreement on a new contract. Truman justified this action under his authority as President but it resulted in a stunning rebuke for him.
On December 31, 1951, the contract between the nation's steel producers and the United Steelworkers Union expired. Weeks of negotiations had failed to produce an acceptable agreement. Since Truman had created a new bureaucracy to manage the economy during the Korean War, both the union and management looked to these agencies to provide a solution. Truman referred the dispute to Wage Stabilization Board (WSB) and requested that both sides continue production until the board made a decision. In March 1952, the WSB voted to give labor a raise of 26 cents an hour. To pay for this increase in wages, the steel manufacturers appealed to the Office of Price Stabilization (OPS) to raise the price of steel but the OPS rejected the request. The administration again attempted to negotiate a compromise, but the steel companies refused to accept the price increases offered by the government, and the union would only accept the raise promised by the WSB. With negotiations at an impasse, a strike appeared inevitable.

April Fools' Day 2009 is no different. From the Middle East, where peace threatened to break out, to Switzerland, where the national obsession with neatness created jobs for mountain cleaners, the world once again fell prey to an array of hoaxers, fibbers and tellers of tall tales — all excused by a strange yearly tradition of mysterious origin. SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea defiantly carried out a provocative rocket launch Sunday that the U.S., Japan and other nations suspect was a cover for a test of its long-range missile technology.
Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230GMT) Sunday from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean and U.S. governments said. The multistage rocket hurtled toward the Pacific, reaching Japanese airspace within seven minutes, but no debris appeared to hit its territory, officials in Tokyo said.
The U.N. Security Council approved an emergency session for Sunday afternoon in New York, following a request from Japan that came minutes after the launch.
The South Koreans called it "reckless," the Americans "provocative," and Japan said it strongly protested the launch.
The launch was a bold act of defiance against President Barack Obama, Japanese leader Taro Aso, Hu Jintao of China and others who pressed Pyongyang in the days leading up to liftoff to call off a launch they said would threaten peace and stability in Northeast Asia.
South Korea's presidential Blue House said the launch poses a "serious threat" to stability on the Korean peninsula and that it would respond to the provocation "sternly and resolutely." President Lee Myung-bak ordered the military to remain on alert, the Blue House said.
"We cannot contain our disappointment and regret over North Korea's reckless act," presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan told reporters Sunday. He said the launch of the long-range rocket "poses a serious threat to security on the Korean peninsula and the world."
North Korea claims its aim is to send an experimental communications satellite into orbit in a peaceful bid to develop its space program.
The U.S., South Korea, Japan and others suspect the launch is a guise for testing the regime's long-range missile technology _ one step toward eventually mounting a nuclear weapon on a missile capable of reaching Alaska and beyond.

In a move that has given many pause, last Sunday the administration of President Barack Obama ventured boldly into the latest worrisome intrusion into the nation’s private sector by firing Rick Wagoner, General Motors’ chief executive officer.
This is but one of a series of troubling events that paint a bleak picture. The Obama administration has no fear whatsoever of solving the nation’s economic woes by reckless profligate spending, protectionism, strengthening efforts to unionize workers and further introducing government control of private sector enterprise and our nation’s means of production.
All the more disconcerting is the dynamic that the firing of Mr. Wagoner has been roundly cheered by our populist comrades as the populist rhetoric assailing our nation’s financial sector has continued to spiral out of control.
For those who may cheer the exit of Mr. Wagoner, please put this incident into the larger context of the government seizing control of several of our nation’s financial giants.
It was just last week that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner unveiled plans that facilitate the draconian regulation and ultimate seizure – or nationalization – of financial institutions as deemed by the government to be necessary, or in the national interest.
He said that the nation's economic crisis demands bold action. Hmmmm, this appears to be a recurring theme.

To understand all of this much more thoroughly, it may be helpful to read Yaron Brook’s Wall Street Journal essay from March 14, “Is Rand Relevant?”
Mr. Brook reminds us that it was in Ayn Rand’s classic “Atlas Shrugged,” that she told the “story of the U.S. economy crumbling under the weight of crushing government interventions and regulations. Meanwhile, blaming greed and the free market, Washington responds with more controls that only deepen the crisis. Sound familiar?”

Arbor Day Activities and Tree City USA for Westminster
In commemorating Arbor Day, the City of Westminster Tree Commission has undertaken projects to enhance the tree canopy, landscaping, and appearance of downtown Westminster.
Among the many projects is a scheduled installation of three Cherry Trees at Belle Grove Square Thursday April 2, 3:30 pm, where Mayor Tom Ferguson will read an Arbor Day proclamation, declaring Arbor Day and Westminster’s dedication to it. The trees are replacements for other trees that were in poor health and that posed a threat to safety. The remaining trees have been inspected for safety issues as well as pruned, if necessary.
Another three replacement trees will be installed on Willis St. in cooperation with the Parkview condominium association—again due to health issues. Another 11 street trees will be installed on West Main, Pennsylvania Ave, and John St, replacing trees that were previously removed or had died.
Over 120 large shrubs (Bottlebrush Buckeye) were installed along the Wakefield Valley Trail. These plants will eventually provide shade for the trail, provide habitat for wildlife, and reduce the mowing necessary in that area.
The activities are coordinated by the Westminster Tree Commission, a group of local volunteers charged with overseeing the City’s robust urban tree canopy program. Thanks to the efforts of the Tree Commission and the City’s grounds maintenance staff, Westminster achieved Tree City USA (Arbor Day Foundation) designation for the 21st consecutive year in 2008. Only five other municipalities in Maryland have earned this distinction more often than Westminster.

The White House was aiming high with yesterday's announcement that President Obama was pretty much becoming CEO of the American automotive industry.
Minutes before the president's arrival in the Grand Foyer of the White House, a technician in the back of the room tested the teleprompter for Obama's speech. "Fourscore and seven years ago," announced one of the screens in big letters, "our fathers brought on this continent a new nation . . ." In the actual event, Obama opted for a more modest text -- less Lincoln at Gettysburg than Krystal Koons cutting an ad for the family car dealerships.
"If you buy a car from Chrysler or General Motors, you will be able to get your car serviced and repaired, just like always," the president promised yesterday morning from the executive mansion.
And that's not all, folks! "Your warranty will be safe," the salesman in chief went on. "In fact, it will be safer than it's ever been, because starting today, the United States government will stand behind your warranty."
Incentives? Obama's got 'em. "If you buy a car anytime this year, you may be able to deduct the cost of any sales and excise taxes," the president offered. And nobody beats Obama on trade-ins; he wants a "generous credit to consumers who turn in old, less-fuel-efficient cars."
Perhaps the president can interest you in a Chevy Malibu? "In 2008, the North American Car of the Year was a GM," he pitched. And the Buick Lucerne is a real cream puff. "This year, Buick tied for first place as the most reliable car in the world," he declared from behind the presidential seal.
If you buy now, he may even throw in the floor mats.

Saying he is practicing what he preaches, Barack Obama has resigned from the Presidency, effective April 1, moved his family out of the Oval Office and enlisted in the Peace Corps, circa 1969.In response to the seemingly shocking transition to citizen volunteerism, pundits at CNN, Fox and MSNBC said they saw it coming and said they saw the foreshadowing on the wall when they detected a subtle secret code word slipped into all 70 of candidate Obama’s campaign paraphernalia: The word: CHANGE!
Fox News’ prime time heavyweight Bill O’Really? Responded to the surprise move, saying, “No surprise here. I simply applied one day for each of bumper stickers, yard signs and billboards and deduced that on day 70 of his term, Barack would simply pack his bags and join the Peace Corps or at least the Americorps. What else could he do?”
MSNBC’s Keith Uberman responded to the stunning move, stating, “Friedrich Nietzsch spelled it out for us on January 3, 1889 during what historical revisionists called a psychotic break. What really happened was Nietzsch simply had a vision just 24 years after the conclusion of the Civil War that in exactly 120 years, or 144 years from the end of the Civil War, a future global superpower with wings of eagles would see a freed slave elevated to lead that nation to embrace more changes in one month than the prior millennium, with no need to finish his term. Actually, it’s quite elementary!”
CNN’s Larry Bling said, “When I interviewed Barack and saw the way he eyeballed my suspenders, winking at me with that sly smile that he was saying he was about to suspend his campaign. After all, we know that 90% of all communication in nonverbal!”
But Enquiring-minded Americans, not content hearing hearsay from irrationally exuberant Lush Rimbaugh or Schlosh Hannity, and wanting to hear about the unprecedented move from the former President, locked arms across Pennsylvania Avenue, trapping the exiting Volkswagen Bus, forcing the former First Lady to stop the vehicle, allowing the populist former President to speak. Standing by the van, flashing a peace sign to the adoring crowds, Citizen Obama spoke but a single Orswellian word: “Rosebud.”

The doors to a Westminster Best Buy will be open in the spring of 2010 if a developer has its way.
In a briefing to the Westminster Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday night, spokespeople for Connecticut-based Konover Development Corp. said ground-breaking for the Westminster Plaza shopping center, anchored by the electronics retailer Best Buy, is imminent.
Konover took over development from Frontier Development LLC six weeks ago and has been progressing aggressively since.
Vitamin Shoppe has also signed a lease to be part of the shopping center. The German discount grocer ALDI is interested, too, according to city officials.
