Baltimore football championship seasons have always started in Westminster … so should we be worried?

Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history... http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0122-20120119,0,3298374.story

Celebrating its fourth anniversary as Carroll County’s premier artists’ cooperative, Off Track Art is a local artist-run collective and gallery space in downtown Westminster.

The gallery features fine art and gifts created by 10 artists, including Kevin Dayhoff, Gail Elwell, Judy Goodyear, Gordon Wickes, Joyce Schaum, Charlotte Laslo, Carolyn Seabolt, Linda Van Hart, Amanda Beck- Mauck and Robert Waddell.

These skilled artists create high quality artwork in a variety of media, including basketry and shaker tape furniture, mixed media collage, handmade artist’s books, silk painting, tinsel painting, painting and drawing, watercolor, photography, sculpture, jewelry, beading and metalsmithing.

The artists exhibit in highly respected juried shows and nationally recognized galleries throughout the U.S.

Nicholas is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk and currently deployed conducting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

Many were saddened recently to learn that the well-respected longstanding community leader and former Carroll County commissioner, John L. Armacost, died January 13.

I had the privilege and honor to work for Commissioner Armacost in several capacities in the 1980s when he was in office from 1982 to 1986 with Jeffrey Griffith and William V. Lauterbach. From 1986 to 1990, Commissioner Armacost served with Commissioner Griffith and then-newcomer, Julia Walsh Gouge.

In those years I served the county during Commissioner Armacost’s term in office on a number of state and county boards and commissions including the county landscape manual committee and the tree preservation committee, in addition to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forestry Board, and numerous agricultural committees with the University of Maryland and the County Extension Service.

I also worked with Dr. Raymond J. Miller, the University of Maryland's Vice Chancellor for Agricultural Affairs, on panel luncheons on present and future challenges to the Carroll and Frederick County agricultural community. The sustainability of the business of agriculture was consistently an important issue for Commissioner Armacost and I recall well his keen interest in those discussions.

Commissioner Armacost served as president of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners from 1982 to 1990. During his tenure he was well known for his sound conservative management of the county budget and his thorough knowledge of the nuts and bolts of how a county works on a day-to-day basis… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5609

On Friday, February 1, 2013, McDaniel College International Relations professor Anouar Boukhars spoke at the Atlantic Council on the conflict in Mali and regional stability.

In addition to teaching at McDaniel College Professor Boukhars is also a Carnegie Endowment Nonresident Scholar. The program aired on C-Span.

Well-respected community leader and former Carroll County commissioner John L. Armacost died on Jan. 13 at age 89. During his tenure as a two-term commissioner, Armacost was known for his sound conservative management of the county budget and his knowledge of the nuts and bolts of how a county works on a day-to-day basis.

Along with 80 other folks from throughout Carroll County, including a broad cross section of local elected officials; I attended the 10^th annual Carroll County NAACP Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast at Martin’s Westminster.

Though Jan. 21 was a school holiday for students around the country, a number of students were on a school campus earlier this week.

McDaniel College welcomed nearly 100 Carroll County schoolchildren on Monday to the fourth annual Martin Luther King Day of celebration and reflection.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., students of all ages participated in a variety of activities that celebrated King's life and provided a service to the community.

Carroll County Community College also provided supplies for the students to make cards for senior citizens as a service project.

"We recognize Dr. King's accomplishments and methods of nonviolence and his service to the community," said Pamela Zappardino, co-director of Ira and Mary Zepp Center for Non-violence and Peace Education, about the event. "It is a day on, rather than a day off. A component of the day is doing a service project."

The center at McDaniel College was a sponsor of the event, as was the NAACP.

"These things are always fun," Zappardino said. "The kids are great."
