Westminster Fire Dept. prayers for Wednesday, September 4, 2013

Westminster Fire Dept. prayers for Wednesday, September 4, 2013

Heavenly Father,

We are brought together through your common call to service to our community.

As we gather for tonight’s meeting, grant us the wisdom for your vision for a better world and better community.

Nurture the faith of those tested by illness, grief, addiction, anxiety, pestilence, or liberals. Give them a spirit of endurance.

Heavenly Father, whose compassion never fails; we commend to you those who mourn, especially the friends and families of Baltimore Co. Police Officer Jason Schneider of Manchester, who was killed in the line of duty last Wednesday, August 28, 2013. The 13-year-veteran of the force was shot and killed delivering a warrant.

I worked many years with his mother-in-law, Shelly Fulton, when we both worked for the city of Westminster. We say a special prayer for her and her family as well.

We Pray and ask the Lord…for the protection of our military personnel, law enforcement, firefighters and EMS personnel and their families.

Thank you for being the constant source of wisdom, courage, and perseverance.

Keep us centered on your path of righteousness… Stay safe. Amen

APEC Bulletin - Issue 34, September 2013

In today’s digital economy, data is stored remotely and accessed anywhere in the world. Emails could be stored on servers in Australia by an American company and accessed in Singapore. Buyers and sellers across different time zones purchase goods, share personal data, and make financial payments via the internet.
These cross-border online data flows are an integral part of today’s international trade and governments are working on how to regulate this data flow to both promote e-commerce and protect consumers’ data privacy.

NEWS RELEASE
MARYLAND STATE POLICE HEADQUARTERS: PIKESVILLE, MD 21208

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 2, 2013

http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2013/09/carroll-co-murder-suspect-in-custody.html

(MT. AIRY, MD) – A Carroll County man is in Maryland State Police custody and will be charged in connection with the murder of his father that occurred this afternoon at the home the two shared.

The victim is identified as Michael J. Pine, 63, of the 700-block of Bridlewreath Way, Mt. Airy, Md.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  His body will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death

The suspect is identified as Joseph W. Pine, 31, the son of the victim, who lived with him at the same address.
After consultation with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office, State Police homicide investigators will be obtaining charging documents for the suspect tonight for the crimes of first and second degree murder.  Additional charges are possible, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Joseph Pine has been taken to the Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster for medical and psychological evaluations.  Charges will be served on him either late tonight or tomorrow, depending on the disposition at the hospital.  He will remain under State Police guard until he is charged, when his custody will be turned over to Carroll County Detention Center deputies.

Shortly before 3:00 p.m. today, Maryland State Police at the Westminster Barrack received a 911 call from a neighbor reporting a disturbance between the victim and suspect outside their residence.  A state trooper assigned to the Mt. Airy Resident Trooper Program responded and arrived at the Pine residence minutes later.

As he arrived, the trooper observed a man, later identified as the suspect, standing outside his home.  Joseph Pine surrendered peacefully to the trooper and was immediately taken into custody.

Backup troopers and deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene.  Troopers observed the victim, later identified as Michael Pine, lying on the front porch of the residence next door.  He had sustained obvious trauma to his upper torso.  Emergency medical personnel who responded determined the victim was deceased.
The scene was secured by uniform troopers and investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to conduct the investigation, with assistance from State Police investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division.  Crime scene technicians from the State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded and will be processing the scene.

State Police investigators applied for and obtained a search warrant for the crime scene.  Investigators and crime scene technicians will be processing the scene for evidence throughout the night, pursuant to the search warrant.  No information is available at this time regarding the recovery of the weapon or weapons used in the crime.

The preliminary investigation indicates some type of altercation occurred between the victim and suspect inside their home.  Evidence indicates the suspect assaulted the victim, possibly with one or more knives.  The victim ran outside his home, pursued by the suspect, and was found next door.

No police record of calls at the home involving any type of domestic problems has been found.  Investigators believe the father and son lived together in the residence.  No one else lived there and no one else was in the home when the altercation occurred today.

The investigation is continuing.

Facebook's disclosures remind us not to count on privacy | PCWorld

Facebook's disclosures remind us not to count on privacy | PCWorld

By Antone Gonsalves, CSOAug 31, 2013

"In releasing its first report on government requests for user information, Facebook is reminding businesses and consumers that use of the Internet today requires self-censorship.

The report released last week shows also that the U.S. government—which is the single biggest requester with between 11,000 and 12,000 requests—is only one of many seeking data from Facebook. Total non-U.S. requests numbered about 15,000 during the first half of this year.

Facebook's Global Government Requests Report is meant to assure users that the company is doing everything it can legally to protect their privacy. Google does the same through its biannual Transparency Report.

The number of users specified in the requests was from 20,000 to 21,000. The majority of the requests were related to criminal cases, such as robberies or kidnappings.

Facebook handed over at least some data in 79 percent of the requests, showing that Facebook refused to release data when it could."

Windows 8.1 digital download will be released October 17, full retail launch October 18 | PCWorld

Brad Chacos @BradChacos Aug 14, 2013

"A day after rampant rumors hinted at an October release date for the impending Windows 8.1 update, Microsoft has gone ahead and let the cat out of the bag: Windows 8.1 will roll out to users via the Windows Store at 7 A.M. Eastern time on October 17.

Microsoft's blog lists the technical release date as October 18, with the digital floodgates opening at midnight New Zealand time. Indeed, beyond its early Windows Store availability, The Verge reports that Windows 8.1's full-blown retail launch—boxed discs, new hardware, etc.—will be on October 18. Microsoft's manufacturing partners are expected to receive the final RTM version of Windows 8.1 by the end of August, giving them time to prepare for the launch."

HAGERSTOWN — Labor Day has a deeper meaning for some area workers than just a day of recognition and time off from work.

Guy Greene of Hagerstown said that as workers are honored on Labor Day, it is important to remember the U.S. soldiers fighting overseas because they don’t get to take the holiday off."
