Walmart's Response to the New York Times Was Brilliant | LinkedIn

Walmart's Response to the New York Times Was Brilliant | LinkedIn

June 26, 2014

Once in awhile I come across a PR tactic that makes me shake my head and think, “I wish I thought of that.”

My company doesn’t represent Walmart, sadly, and the retail behemoth probably spends more on public relations and crisis communications than the GDP of some third world countries, but if we did I’d like to think I’d handle things like Dave Tovar, their VP of corporate communications.
In case you’re unaware, last week Tim Egan, writing in The New York Times, drew a contrast between Walmart and Starbucks with regard to how they treat their respective employees and their contributions to society and the economy. Needless to say, it got into some serious bashing of the much-maligned retailer, however this time, Walmart fought back in the most clever of ways.
Posting the story on its blog, Tovar took a red pen like many a school teacher and systematically “edited” the article. Beneath a note that said “Tim: Thanks for sharing your first draft.

Pippa's team latest attraction for Carroll County cycling fans

Pippa's team latest attraction for Carroll County cycling fans

In stark contrast to the reported throngs of spectators, who, according to newspaper accounts, were in Carroll County for a "great Bicycle Race Meet under the supervision of the Cycling Ramblers of Westminster" more than 100 years ago, my wife and I were the only persons on Main Street at the railroad tracks when an internationally known cyclist came through town at 10:48 p.m. on a Friday last month.

Philippa Charlotte "Pippa" Middleton, the sister of Kate Middleton, the duchess of Cambridge, and the sister-in-law of Prince William, duke of Cambridge and an heir to the British throne, joined a long and storied history of bicycling in Carroll County when she came through Westminster in a cross-country bicycle race.

Daily Record: Mosby defeats Bernstein in Baltimore prosecutor’s primary - June 25, 2014

Daily Record: Mosby defeats Bernstein in Baltimore prosecutor’s primary

Marilyn J. Mosby pulled off an upset win against incumbent Gregg L. Bernstein in the Democratic primary for Baltimore City State’s Attorney.

Bernstein conceded defeat late Tuesday night when unofficial results showed him trailing Mosby significantly. Early Wednesday morning, results from all precincts showed that Mosby won by 55 percent to 45 percent.

Mosby, an assistant state’s attorney from 2005 to 2012, has been a litigator for Liberty Mutual Insurance since leaving the prosecutor’s office.

Mosby, 34, told The Daily Record in May that the “traditional approach to crime fighting in Baltimore has failed” and that one of her first priorities would be join forces with the Baltimore Police Department “to effectively manage and target the violent repeat offender list.” She also vowed to improve the office’s relationship with the community, saying he had created a “culture of mistrust.”

Radiolab: Limits – Fantastic Podcast Episode about Endurance Athletes

Radiolab: Limits – Fantastic Podcast Episode about Endurance

Athletes: http://runblogger.com/2010/05/radiolab-limits-fantastic-podcast.html

"May 1, 2010 By Peter Larson"I’m a sucker for a good endurance sports story, and more often than not, when it involves people demonstrating incredible perseverance, I tend to get a bit emotional (think NOVA Marathon Challengeor Spirit of the Marathon). The other day a friend of mine on dailymile posted a link to a podcast episode from WYNC’s Radiolab that told several stories of people testing the limits of human the human body, both physical and mental. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to getting a little choked up while listening to this. Here’s the episode description from the Radiolab website: http://runblogger.com/2010/05/radiolab-limits-fantastic-podcast.html

Limits of the Body

Jad and Robert talk to two Ironman competitors, Julie Mossand Wendy Ingraham to find out how they do what they do. Physiologist Dr. David Jones tells us how to trick the voice in your head that tells you you're exhausted. Then we follow two men, Patrick Autissier and Jure Robic, as they bike across the country as fast as they can in a crazy race called The Ride Across America. Producer Lulu Miller brings us their story and New York Times writer Daniel Coyle walks us through the process of physical and mental breakdown RAAM competitors face.

Priscilla G. Teeter, a registered nurse who later became an administrator with the Carroll County Health Department, died May 30 of brain cancer at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster. She was 85.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/obituaries/bs-md-ob-priscilla-teeter-20140616,0,4054151.story Fred Rasmussen is a great writer and he did a good job on a tribute to a wonderful Carroll County icon.

Mrs. Teeter was an absolutely wonderful person, as was her late husband, who was also extremely good to Caroline and me. Mrs. Teeter will be greatly missed and her passing makes me very-very sad.

According to Mr. Rasmussen, "Mrs. Teeter was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 17 Bond St., Westminster, where a celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday."

Marine hero on Medal of Honor: 'Surreal and kind of weird':

"COLUMBIA, S.C.— A Marine who threw himself on a grenade during a Taliban attack in Afghanistan to save a comrade's life will receive the Medal of Honor Thursday from President Obama.

Retired Marine corporal William Kyle Carpenter, 24, sustained major injuries, including the loss of his right eye. After a long recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, he's now attending the University of South Carolina.

WLTX-TV spoke with Carpenter about the moments after the attack in 2010 and what it's like to be recognized for his sacrifice. Here is an edited version of the conversation:"

U.S. captures Benghazi suspect in secret raid

U.S. Special Operations forces have captured the alleged ringleader of the terrorist attacks in Benghazi in a secret raid in Libya, the first time one of the accused perpetrators of the 2012 assault has been apprehended, according to U.S. officials.

The officials said Ahmed Abu Khattala was captured over the weekend by American troops working alongside the FBI and is now in U.S. custody “in a secure location outside Libya.” Khattala was apprehended near Benghazi.

Steve Haycox: As the centenary of World War 1 approaches

Steve Haycox: War easy to romanticize away from heat of battle

By STEVE HAYCOX June 13, 2014

As the centenary of World War I approaches, which can be dated from the assassination of the Hapsburg Austrian empire heir Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, Bosnia, on July 28, 1914, the expected rasher of books has rekindled discussion on the war's cause, about which there has never been a consensus among historians.

Was it, as Article 231 of the Versailles Treaty ending the war maintained, a matter of aggressive German imperialism, of Kaiser Wilhlem II making ruthless war on hapless and sometime helpless European neighbors? Or was it, as nationalist historians during and after World War II asserted, the combined stupidity of such European leaders as the Kaiser, England's Sir Edward Grey, France's Raymond Poincarre, Russia's foreign minister Sergei Sozonov and the Austrian Francis Joseph...

In its aftermath it was called "The Great War," for in its worldwide sweep, it enveloped all the major nations one way or another, and brought 16 million deaths and 20 million wounded; 7 million of the deaths were civilian. It settled nothing among nations, and created conditions in Germany that led to World War II. .Read more here: http://www.adn.com/2014/06/13/3515781/steve-haycox-war-easy-to-romanticize.html#emlnl=Morning_Newsletter..

'Guns Kept People Alive' During The Civil Rights Movement | WAMU 88.5 - American University Radio

'Guns Kept People Alive' During The Civil Rights Movement | WAMU 88.5 - American University Radio:

June 5, 2014

"This year marks the 50th anniversary of many pivotal events in the civil rights movement, and to commemorate "Freedom Summer," Tell Me More is diving into books that explore that theme.

One of the cornerstones of the civil rights movement was non-violent resistance. During lunch counter sit-ins and protest marches Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders instructed participants not to take up arms. Instead, when violence erupted or force was used to disrupt their activities, people would non-violently resist attempts by law enforcement to end the protest.

But this passive resistance did not necessarily mean an unwillingness to use force to protect themselves from violence in other circumstances.

This hiding in plain sight story is recounted to NPR's Michel Martin by author, professor and former Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee field secretary Charles E. Cobb Jr. in his new book, This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed: How Guns Made the Civil Rights Movement Possible."
