Caroline and I stopped by the Westminster Vol. Fire Dept. engine bays...

Caroline and I stopped in the engine bay to reflect upon the 60 years that Jack Lippy selflessly served our community. Later in the morning the Westminster Vol. Fire Dept. conducted a memorial service at Myers Durboraw Funeral Home to celebrate the life of Mr. Lippy, who answered the final call on Dec. 4, 2016. God Bless him for his service. http://www.myersdurborawfh.com/notices/John-Lippy Dec. 10, 2016

Baltimore Sun: Gov. Larry Hogan, Annapolis leaders praise new Baltimore mayor

Baltimore Sun: Gov. Larry Hogan, Annapolis leaders praise new Baltimore mayor http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-hogan-pugh-inauguration-20161206-story.html Article by Erin Cox Wednesday, December 7, 2016

This is a great turn of events. We all benefit and move the ball forward when we set aside partisan politics and work together. Mayor Pugh is where she is today because she works hard, does her homework, is nice to people and does not play partisan politics. She has depth and integrity, knows the issues, and how to put folks together to solve problems.

I actually had expected great things from Mayor Catherine Pugh’s predecessor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. I had worked with her dad, "Pete" Rawlings, in Annapolis on a number of municipal issues and I really enjoyed working with him. Sadly, I was disappointed with SRB’s tenure in office. I sincerely hope she takes advantage of her time in the desert to reflect upon how she may come back, and serve again by building upon her strengths and addressing the lessons learn. Only time will tell.

For a great article on Mayor Rawlings-Blake, read Barry Rascovar’s story, “The Disappointing Mayoralty of Stephanie Rawlings-Blake: http://politicalmaryland.com/2016/12/05/the-disappointing-mayoralty-of-stephanie-rawlings-blake/ - KED

Meanwhile, according to Erin Cox:

"Republican Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday delivered an emphatic endorsement of Baltimore's new Democratic Mayor Catherine Pugh, praising her relentless energy and saying the pair 'have a shared purpose and share a commitment' to improve the city.

'This morning, I am incredibly hopeful about the future,' Hogan said during brief remarks at her inauguration ceremony. 'Mayor Pugh and I have a shared vision for Baltimore.' [...]

Hogan called Pugh's inauguration a 'very important day for Baltimore' and suggested her administration would better weather problems that beleaguer the city. He said they both want to eliminate disparities, raze dilapidated houses and invigorate the city's economy.

'Baltimore has endured through some difficult times,' he said. 'But it is when the challenges are greatest that effective leadership is needed the most.'

From the stage, Pugh reciprocated Hogan's promise to work together, turning from the crowd to directly address just him minutes after taking the oath of office...

The exchange, plus the bi-partisan spread of elected officials sharing a stage at the War Memorial ceremony, highlighted the incoming mayor's pragmatism and relationships cemented over two decades in public office."

Visiting the P. Graham Dunn, art, gifts, home decor... store in Dalton, Ohio

Visiting the P. Graham Dunn, art, gifts, home decor... store in Dalton, Ohio Nov. 25, 2016 Friday

It is a fascinating store that manufactures and sell woodworking products; much of which is of a patriotic, agricultural, arts and crafty, and religious theme.

The customers are predominantly Mennonite and some Amish - complete with horse and buggies outside. Another great bonus is that the clientele actually dresses appropriately to be out in public. And folks are respectful and polite. Just saying.

It is a really neat store. Almost like an art gallery... Perfect place to visit for someone who maintained his woodworking workshop and radial arm saw in the living room for fifteen years.

Say no to Black Friday - a new kind of obedience

Say no to Black Friday - a new kind of obedience

Black Friday is nuts. I will not be shopping on Black Friday or Shabby Saturday. If we refused to go out and shop, then corporate America would not force employees to work under such horrid circumstances.

If you have to go out tomorrow - treat the retail workers especially well and tip the restaurant servers extra and be sure to say "Thank you."

A New Kind of Obedience

"Like many, I try to reconcile myself to these daily humiliations through militancy over pressing issues.  But that always seems like just another diversion from the emptiness of it all.  Is it our pursuit of happiness through conspicuous consumption that is at stake?

"Is happiness a value that we can find within ourselves or must we try to purchase or acquire it?   In this pursuit of happiness, what if it is really me, my soul, and the very essence of my existence that is at stake?" (1.)

Hats off to Hannah Brewer. Ms. Brewer, in her role as Miss Maryland, has done an incredibly great job of representing Carroll County and Maryland. We are so proud of her.

According to this well-written article by awesome Carroll County Times writer, Jacob deNobel, in addition to "her duties as Miss Maryland, the holiday season provides Hannah Brewer with another series of tasks.  The nonprofit she runs, Hannah's Heroes, increases production of holiday cards, gifts and care packages to be sent to military members overseas..."

Hannah Brewer attended and made a great presentation for a meeting of the Maryland Troopers Association Lodge # 20. We were quite impressed with her poise, presence and enthusiasm

Nov. 14, 2016 – A Martian landing in Maryland on election night never would have guessed that Donald Trump was about to pull off the upset of the century.

That’s because Maryland is an outlier, an exception to what happens in presidential elections in the rest of the country. Political Maryland's Democratic Cocoon

Trump got slaughtered in Maryland, receiving just a little over a third of the vote. Only a few other heavily Democratic states, like Massachusetts and California, saw such lopsided Democratic victories in the presidential race won by Republican Trump.

The election map in Maryland looked surprisingly similar to the 2012 election map. Democrats have such overwhelming majorities in the densely populated Central Maryland subdivisions that this provides a protective cocoon for the party’s presidential candidate.

9 Journalists And Executives At A Leading Turkish Newspaper Are Arrested

I have not heard much more about this. Whatever became of this…? I mean, I am well aware that the political landscape in Turkey is rapidly changing… I guess I am looking for an objective quick analysis of where we are today in Turkey, with respect to the harassment of journalists. 01/14/2017 KED

9 Journalists and Executives at a Leading Turkish Newspaper Are Arrested http://n.pr/2fc4MHo

Bill Chappell, NPR: November 5, 2016

It's one of Turkey's oldest and most-respected newspapers — and that description comes from a rival. But on Saturday, the editor-in-chief, a cartoonist, and seven board members of daily newspaper Cumhuriyet were sent to prison pending trial.

Prosecutors initially ordered the nine journalists detained on Monday, as part of an anti-terrorism investigation linked to a failed coup attempt in Turkey earlier this year. Four others with ties to the newspaper, including two columnists, were released on bail Saturday.

Dayhoff: Enjoying autumn leaves in Carroll County Maryland

Dayhoff: Enjoying autumn leaves in Carroll County Maryland

Time Flies by Kevin Dayhoff October 7, 2016

For those of us who adore the long days, sunshine, heat, and humidity of Maryland summers; the shorter days and crisp temperatures of October bring mixed emotions.

We are certainly happy to turn off the air conditioning, throw open the windows and enjoy the cooler temperatures and the brilliant colors of the leaves in Carroll County.

However, we all know in the back of our minds that winter is not far away. Winters in Maryland are hateful. Snow is a four-letter word. Ice is the wrath of the Gods.

Yet, for a runner, the kaleidoscope of the fall colors are a welcome distraction to the constant pounding of footsteps on a fall run.

Fall is for runners. Whether you walk or run, the Wakefield Valley Community Trail is arguably one of the best places to enjoy fall in Carroll County.

Driver charged with hit and run involving an ambulance

Driver charged with hit and run involving a Westminster Vol. Fire Dept. ambulance at Carroll Co. crash scene Sept. 23, 2016

Sept. 29, 2016 by Kevin E. Dayhoff

We want everyone to come home safely at the end of the day.

On Friday, early in the afternoon, Sept. 23, 2016, a driver blew through an accident scene on westbound Rt. 140 and Sandymount Road, almost hit a Westminster Vol. Fire Dept. EMS provider, and sideswiped ambulance 38.

On Wed., Sept. 28, 2016, Greg Shipley with the Maryland State Police office of media communications sent out a news release about the incident: http://news.maryland.gov/msp/2016/09/28/driver-charged-with-hit-and-run-involving-ambulance-at-carroll-co-crash-scene/

On Wed., Sept. 26, 2016, the Carroll County Times carried the story: “Westminster man charged with hit-and-run of ambulance at crash scene,”
“A Westminster man has been charged in a hit-and-run incident after he allegedly drove through a crash scene on Md. 140 on Friday, striking an ambulance, then drove away…” Carroll County Times staff Wed., Sept. 28, 2016 http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/crime/ph-cc-ambulance-hit-and-run-20160928-story.html

On Thursday afternoon, Sept. 29, 2016, news reporter Tracey Leong and videographer Judy Ryan from WJZ Baltimore Channel 13 interviewed Westminster Vol. Fire Dept. EMS provider Brittany Baeder about the hit and run crash in Carroll Co. Sept. 23, 2016 at Rte 140 and Sandymount Rd. http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2016/09/29/hit-and-run-driver-unapologetic-after-narrowly-missing-firefighter/

“The men and women of the Westminster Vol. Fire Dept., on behalf of all Carroll County fire fighters. EMS provides and police officers, urge the driving public to exercise extra restraint, caution, care, and patience when they come upon fire and police officials responding at an accident scene.

The consequences of not exercising that extra care can be horrific. Besides, they could attending to your loved-one, neighbor, friend, or family member – or the first responder hurt or killed by your actions could be your loved-one, neighbor, friend, or family member. Move over - we want everyone to come home safely at the end of the day.” Kevin E. Dayhoff Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 PIO and Chaplain
