Vote Nov 6, 2001 for Joe Baldi, Frederick City Alderman

I was going through some old papers earlier today and came across this ad for Joe Baldi from November 1, 2001. It was posted on my blog here: http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2001/11/vote-nov-6-2001-for-joe-baldi-frederick.html

Since I was in Frederick last night and had dinner at Isabella’s - http://www.isabellas-tavern.com/ - and had a wonderful visit, I thought I would post it in tribute to one of the several folks who had a hand in making Frederick what it is today.

All too often, we quickly forget the work of the folks who have gone before us:

The Taxing Dilemma of 2010
Kevin E. Dayhoff
As we ponder the past year and look forward to 2010 with great trepidation, so far there has been little mentioned about what Congress will do with the temporary tax cuts enacted during the administration of George W. Bush that are scheduled to expire at the end of the coming year?

Why So Much Anger?
Roy Meachum
His name does not come to mind, nor his party; a man observed the anger on today’s Capitol Hill is greater than the Civil War run-up when congressmen beat and struck each other. In at least one case, a legislator was “called out,” invited to duel for words said on the floor.

A Man of Integrity – or Not…
Farrell Keough
While this should be a time of writing about family traditions or various ideas for the New Year, another pressing issue has arisen that requires our immediate attention. Del. Rick Weldon, (3B) has announced he will not complete his term, hence a replacement must be chosen by the Frederick and Washington County Republican Central Committees.

Midnight Voting
Richard B. Weldon Jr.
The United States Senate, arguably one of the most revered and venerated deliberative bodies in the world, is holding midnight voting sessions on a bill that will impact a major share of the national economy.

What’s In and What’s Out – 2010 Edition
Steven R. Berryman
It is my distinct honor and pleasure to pass judgments for you once again on changes, transitions, and trends spanning this New Years period. So, after some not-so-insignificant pondering:

While The Cat’s Away…
Michael Kurtianyk
In case you missed it, there is an empty seat in the House of Delegates. Yes! Now former Del. Rick Weldon, who represented his constituents (southern Frederick and Washington Counties), has accepted the role as City of Frederick’s chief administrative officer. So, the Frederick and Washington County Republican Central Committees must choose from the top three candidates put forth by a nominating committee…

“… I view Katie Nash as the best candidate. She knows the issues and what is important to the county. She was impressive on Pressing Issues as a fellow panelist… She will bring a fresh perspective and a much-needed boost of energy to her constituents…” (I could not agree more – Kevin Dayhoff) http://thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3531

These observations appeared in my Frederick News-Post column the December sleigh bells-bedecked horses pulled wagons through downtown streets; a spectacle that had disappeared several decades before. It was also the season when my column first appeared.

Christmas Again…
Patricia A. Kelly
It comes every year, whether we’re ready or not. We rush around, decorating, buying gifts, partying, bulging and dazed from excessive eating and drinking. We whine to each other about how tired we are, at least women do. What’s up?

“I wonder as I wander…”
Tony Soltero
It's Christmas Eve. I'm not in a particularly political mood today. So let me just state, very quickly, that this health-care reform bill is better than nothing, but it's pretty weak tea, and doesn't do a thing to establish any competition for the private insurance industry, which is the root of the problem with our health-care system.

The Lottery – Congressional Style
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Monday was the darkest day of the year and that’s not just because the ignoramus, cataclysmic, health care reform bill in Congress passed another procedural test just minutes after 1 A.M. in the U.S. Senate by a vote of 60 Democrats to 40 Republicans.

Mice in My Kitchen
Roy Meachum
Pushkin and I live in an about 250-year-old house; built entirely of logs down to its foundation, walkers-by can’t see that. The front on North Market Street was added in the early 19th century, sometime before pocket doors were invented. The older part was then covered with bricks to match the new addition.

And with good reason …. Part 2
Nick Diaz
In my last column, I confessed of being one of those radical Cuban exiles who strongly oppose the resumption of trade with the repressive regime that has enslaved my native land for well over half a century. Those well-meaning people who continue to chant the left-wing mantra that “the embargo has not worked” are the same ones who continue to be laughed at by the Castro brothers and their minions, in Roadrunner “Beep-beep” fashion.

Citizens For Walkersville – Postscript
Steven R. Berryman

With little fanfare or media coverage, last Friday around noon, the last chapter of the “Citizens for Walkersville” saga ended with the sale of the old Nicodemus Farm to the Town of Walkersville.

Another Tangled Web...
Michael Kurtianyk
This is, in a word, sad. Why is it that the Board of County Commissioners continues to create an adversarial relationship with the municipalities? It’s ridiculous that dealings have become so strained that the only way to communicate with our county leaders is through lawsuits?

Congratulations to soon-to-be former Delegate Rick Weldon for accepting the role as the City of Frederick’s chief administrative officer. … but it seems like a sort of homecoming for him, as he worked in City Hall during the Jim Grimes administration. This is a great move for everyone. (Congratulations to Delegate Weldon – he will do a great job for Frederick. – Kevin Dayhoff)

Welcome to Maryland weather. It was only a week ago when we were toughing it out under almost two feet of snow.

All last week, news accounts trickled-in from throughout the state of various local governments having a tough time clearing the snow for Christmas week.

Not so in Westminster. On Sunday, December 20, 2009, Uniontown Road in Westminster was already a bare road less than 12 hours after the snow stopped; thanks to the great work of the Westminster MD Street Department. And our front sidewalk has been cleared thanks to our new neighbors across the street.

Yes, we have every older person’s dream come true – a nice very young couple has moved-in just across the street. Meet AOL's Fresh-Faced Future Of Local News

Nicholas Carlson | Dec. 18, 2009

As far as we can tell, CEO Tim Armstrong's plan to turn AOL into a next generation media company involves three editorial groups:

A massive group of 10,000+ freelancers who are assigned stories through Seed.com.

A mix of fulltime bloggers and high-profile old media types who will assign those stories and write for 100+ branded blogs.

Hundreds of "Patch" editors who will run local news blogs to keep tabs on small suburban communities.

It's this last group of Patch editors that interests many of us the most. Two reasons:  http://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-future-of-aol-and-local-news-2009-12

As the New Year approaches and we look back upon local history, we're reminded that the good old days weren't always that good, and the more things change, the more they remain the same:

A Dec. 30, 1971, article in the now-defunct Democratic Advocate noted that, "Unknown burglars broke into the J.C. Penny department store over the weekend, ransacked the offices, and stole a $1.59 flashlight from the basement work table, the Westminster city police reported.

The Marine, Republican, Harley Biker and the reporter

The Marine, Republican, Harley Biker and the reporter http://tinyurl.com/ye336js

2009 and media bias – another year of newspaper casualties: I received this from several colleagues in an e-mail… And yes, before you reach for the flame-on fingers on the keyboard, this is my chosen profession… That said, this story just about sums-up to what end much of the media has evolved. Read it and laugh – then weep:

A Harley biker is riding by the zoo in Washington, DC when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event.

The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, 'Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life.'

The Harley rider replies, 'Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.'

The reporter says, 'Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a journalist, you know, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page... So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?'

The biker replies, 'I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican.’ The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:

U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH

That pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these days.

Tom Takes a Wife – Part 2

Kuching, Malaysia – A beautiful woman sleeping next to me! I had to pinch myself to make sure this was real. Yes, this incredible sensitive being was my wife in a slumber reminiscent of an angel minus the wings. Or maybe she had them stored some place in a closet.

Mice in My Kitchen

On His Way Out the Door
Roy Meachum
The Frederick News-Post published this week the story: On his way out the door, new ex-mayor Jeff Holtzinger “signed off on legal action against Frederick County to appeal an ordinance requiring developers to abide by strict school capacity requirements on newly annexed land.” The quote comes directly from the front-page piece.

Don’t Bet On It
Joe Charlebois
Recently our neighbor to the southwest raised the ante on the Maryland racing industry. By overwhelming numbers the Jefferson County, West Virginia, voters approved a measure to take “racing” there to the next level. The measure that passed approved table games to complement the horse races and slots at Charles Town.

Descent and Recovery
Derek Shackelford
The details continue. Great journalists must be really having a difficult time finding quality in this era. Why? The constant bombardment and stream of salacious detail reporting.

Dear Santa,
Chris Cavey
It’s been a long time since I have taken the time to write you a letter. I trust all is well with you and Mrs. Claus. As only you could know, I have been a nice boy over the years, perhaps a naughty slip or two, which have been mostly reconciled. I have worked hard at my job, have done my best to be kind, taught my children well and tried to set an example for my fellow man.

Fuel for the Election Fires

The week before Christmas and all is good with the world; well, not so much. We’ve got nothing much changing in the economy except the imaginary grading system President Barack Obama has in his own mind. I’m good, I’m special and – doggonit – I’m worth it. Voters’ remorse is apparent and becoming louder by the day.

I want a chainsaw for Christmas!
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Hopefully, by now you are finishing all your Christmas shopping and wrapping presents with some soothing Christmas music in the background.

Having asked the question and receiving a positive answer, I never dreamed of the intricacies of the marriage ceremonies. I did not believe they would last a month.

Getting There The Hard Way – Part 2
Farrell Keough
Yesterday in this space we discussed some of the political and consensus aspects to long-term transportation planning. We will now pursue some of the myths that surround transportation and determine some of the factors necessary to develop solutions to these problems.

Obama’s Rough Road
Roy Meachum
It was a lark week for the president. Not only because he picked up his Nobel Peace Prize, more importantly there were signs the economy was on the mend. He and I continue to come apart on the issue of the Afghanistan war that was initially botched when his predecessor abandoned the mission, to take on Iraq.

Getting There The Hard Way – Part 1
Farrell Keough
My time as chairman of the National Region Transportation Planning Board Citizens Advisory Committee is coming to an end – thank heaven they do not give out business cards, as this would be about the size of a bumper sticker – must be a government thing.
