Big Media Missing the Point
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Everyone who bickers about the size of the crowd in Washington on September 12, or what network covered it and what media did not cover it, or whether the protest was the work of conservatives or un-American racists is sorely missing the significance of the entire event.

Maryland’s Democrat U. S. Senator Ben Cardin got quite an earful at a town hall meeting Monday night in Towson on healthcare reform. Although I choose not to attend, according to many published accounts, those who did go soundly jeered and booed him throughout the evening.

In a quaint small town in northern Carroll County, Silver Run, happens to be the home of one Carroll County’s elegant fine dining experiences, “Bud’s of Silver Run.” (For more about “Bud’s at Silver Run,” call them at 410-346-6816 or visit them at http://www.budsatsilverrun.com/.)

Silver Run is about eight miles north of Westminster and perhaps 20 miles south of Gettysburg, on Littlestown Pike. You will find it nestled perfectly in our county’s beautiful countryside. It is a little town that looks so pretty, you’d think that Disney or a movie production company built it.

However, it’s real. Apparently I’m not the only fan of Silver Run and Bud’s; it seems that many folks have already discovered the place. Not only was the restaurant full the evening I went, but we recognized many familiar faces there.

We at Americans for Limited Government are saddened that instead of helping us to get to the bottom of
the hateful email that was indeed sent from NBC’s server, and this can be verified, and was not tampered with, which can also be verified, that NBC President Steve Capus has instead chosen to circle the wagons and protect what is indefensible with hysterical, frantic accusations.

This email has left a digital footprint that is undeniable. We did our due diligence. We have confirmed that it indeed came from NBC’s server and Jane Stone's email address.

As before, we renew our offer that we made to both Ms. Stone and NBC President Capus over the phone today to get to the bottom of who sent this email from Ms. Stone’s Blackberry email address. That offer remains open, and we would like it very much if both Ms. Stone and NBC would issue an apology to both Americans for Limited Government, and Mr. Alex Rosenwald, who was the target of this hateful email.

ALG Statement in Response to NBC “Bite me, Jew Boy” Email

Bill Wilson, President, Americans for Limited Government

Americans for Limited Government is appalled that
an employee of the NBC news network apparently felt it was appropriate to send an email to an ALG employee, in response to a standard news release, saying, “Bite me, Jew Boy.”

According to ALG records, the email came from the Blackberry and email address of Jane Stone, a producer for NBC’s Dateline. The email was sent to Alex Rosenwald, the ALG Director of Media Outreach. The news release to which Ms Stone apparently responded was
one in which ALG called upon Congress to defund ACORN.

Americans for Limited Government does not contend that NBC or its parent company GE, are anti-Semitic. What is highly disturbing, however, is that there clearly is a culture at NBC that has allowed this person who clearly has issues to go unchecked.

Ms Stone claims she did not send the offensive email. If that is not the case, we at ALG call upon her to help ascertain who did send it using her Blackberry and her email address. If Ms Stone did, in fact, send it, we at ALG call upon Ms Stone to apologize to Mr. Rosenwald, and we call upon the NBC hierarchy above Ms Stone to join her in issuing that apology.

NBC News president Steve Capus fired back at
Americans for Limited Government Friday, after the conservative group published an email allegedly from NBC producer Jane Stone to its director of media outreach Alex Rosenwald, with one line: “Bite me Jew Boy.”

“I’m still in shock, and outraged that this reckless organization would go out with such a defamatory, irresponsible statement,” Capus told POLITICO. “We have done a complete email analysis, all of our IT, all of our records.”

Here's what both sides agree on: Stone responded yesterday to a mass email from ALG.

[…]

UPDATE: Carter Clews, Director of Communications for Americans for Limited Government, has issued a statement following Capus' interview with POLITICO. And NBC has put out an official statement, too Both are after the jump.

We at Americans for Limited Government are saddened that instead of helping us to get to the bottom of the hateful email that was indeed sent from NBC's server, and this can be verified, and was not tampered with, which can also be verified, that NBC President Steve Capus has instead chosen to circle the wagons and protect what is indefensible with hysterical, frantic accusations.

That offer remains open, and we would like it very much if both Ms. Stone and NBC would issue an apology to both Americans for Limited Government, and Mr. Alex Rosenwald, who was the target of this hateful email.

UPDATE 2: NBC's statement:

Americans for Limited Government has chosen to launch an outrageous, reckless attack and smear campaign against an NBC News employee. Faced with irrefutable evidence that our employee did nothing more than ask to be removed from an email mailing list, the organization has maliciously published a fabricated email.

Our employee never sent any such email.. She is completely innocent of the outrageous charges and is being used by an organization to make a self-serving point. This is a shameless, hateful and defaming act which should be roundly denounced.

Flight of MD Millionaires Haunts O'Malley Budget Policy

Flight of MD Millionaires Haunts O'Malley Budget Policy by: Mark

http://yrnetwork.com/blogs/2905/view.aspx?article=560

The #1 Republican Network of Young Professionals, Students, Entreprenuers, and Young Business Leaders: http://yrnetwork.com/
“Of course millionaires are leaving Maryland,” exclaimed Anirban Basu as he discussed the deteriorating economic conditions facing Maryland’s citizens and businesses.

Basu, an economist and CEO of Sage Policy Group, was the keynote speaker at the Maryland Association of Counties (MACO) summer conference last week. In analyzing the decline of revenues from personal income taxes paid to the state, Basu attributed part of the decline to Governor O’Malley’s initiative last year to raise the tax rate on earners of $1 million or more.

Under the O’Malley proposal enacted into law in the 2008 Session, the top marginal tax rate was increased from 5.5% to 6.25%. When coupled with the local income tax, some Maryland filers are now taxed at a combined 9.45% personal income tax rate – or they can move to a low tax state where there is no personal income tax.

Prior to the O’Malley tax increase, a miniscule 0.3% of Maryland taxpayers (taxpayers with $1 million or more income) contributed 15% of the total revenues for the state's personal income tax receipts.

We can expect the Comptroller’s office to provide final figures on the flight of millionaires from Maryland in October, but the initial analysis was not good. As reported in the Wall Street Journal (

“One year later, nobody's grinning. One-third of the millionaires have disappeared from Maryland tax rolls. In 2008 roughly 3,000 million-dollar income tax returns were filed by the end of April. This year there were 2,000, which the state comptroller's office concedes is a ‘substantial decline.’ On those missing returns, the government collects 6.25% of nothing. Instead of the state coffers gaining the extra $106 million the politicians predicted, millionaires paid $100 million less in taxes than they did last year - even at higher rates.”

This ill-fated policy decision represents a $206 million shortfall of the current $800 million hole in the O’Malley deficit. It is likely that state employees will be forced to cough up at least $34 million (if the furlough is comparable to last year's furlough plan) although many analysts expect even deeper cuts into state employee salaries. O'Malley told local officials at the MACO conference that they should expect $250 million in cuts to local aid.

This is just one of a great number of bad policy decisions made by the O’Malley Administration. As state employees, local governments and others face the day of reckoning this week for the announcement of the next round of cuts, they will realize that it’s not just the “Great Recession” but also the misguided O'Malley budget policy that places on them the burden of cleaning up the state’s budget crisis.

Smigiel Pipkin protest closing the Upper Shore Community Mental Health Center

Smigiel Pipkin protest closing the Upper Shore Community Mental Health Center

Can you only imagine the outrage of the liberal Maryland media if former Governor Robert Ehrlich had closed the Upper Shore Community Mental Health Center?

Delegate Mike Smigiel Press Release:

Contact: Andi Morony September 24, 2009 410-490-2734

For Immediate Release

Delegate Mike Smigiel (R-District 36-Upper Shore) will be joining Senator EJ Pipkin at an all-night vigil in Chestertown, MD to protest the closing of the Upper Shore Community Mental Health Center.

"Very few issues touch the community in such a real and significant way as the need for basic services for those who are unable to help themselves. When those issues arise, public servants need to do everything possible. to bring attention to the urgency of the situation." Smigiel said of the vigil.

"The community has been working very hard to save the USCMHC. We, as public officials, must lead the charge to reverse this decision." Smigiel said in reference to the decision to close the center.

"I find it in poor taste and particularly callous that the Governor will attend a $1,000 a plate fundraiser here in Chestertown but cannot find the time to tour this award-winning facility and speak directly with the people most affected by the cuts" Smigiel concluded.

An invitation went to the Governor's office a week ago from the members of the 36th District Legislative Team asking that he come and tour the facility. To date, no response has been received. The high dollar campaign fundraiser is scheduled for this Saturday at 1PM in Chestertown, Md.

Published Wednesday, September 23, 2009

The Daily News-Miner has had its agreements and disagreements with now-former Gov. Sarah Palin at various points during her time serving the state of Alaska. We have tried to maintain respect for the office of governor and to be generally civil when discussing Mrs. Palin, her policies and the actions she took while serving as governor. The same has been true for the time since she left office.

Today I must apologize to Mrs. Palin personally and on behalf of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner for the choice of words used on the bottom of Wednesday’s front page regarding her speaking engagement in Hong Kong this week to a group of global investors.

We used offensive language — “A broad in Asia” — above a small photograph of the former governor to direct readers inside the newspaper to a full story of her Hong Kong appearance.

Big Media Missing the Point
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Everyone who bickers about the size of the crowd in Washington on September 12, or what network covered it and what media did not cover it, or whether the protest was the work of conservatives or un-American racists is sorely missing the significance of the entire event.

Karl Rove and the Spitballers
Chris Cavey
Last week Karl Rove spoke at the Goucher College “President’s Forum “series. Mr. Rove and Goucher President Sanford J. Unger took the stage in front of an audience of over 500. The evening was a learning experience for the liberal student body; however, for me, it was just vintage Karl Rove.

Healthcare:

Chip away at the items one by one. Stop forcing insurance companies to have mandated coverage outside normal everyday items. IVF (In vitro fertilization) is one example. Do a basic coverage; with wellness visits and then, if you must, do an a-la-carte menu for the rest.

Kuching, Malaysia – Illegal logging and poor forest practices are two separate things” and “if there is one thing I hope could be improved over time it would be the quality of data that everyone could share” are the words of wisdom spouted by one Alberto Goetzl. Mr. Goetzl, a policy bureaucrat wonk from Poolesville, Maryland has been sharing these brilliant insights to the people of Malaysia through a program sponsored by the U.S. State Department.

Let the Games Begin
Roy Meachum
After Frederick City primaries last week, Republican friends insisted on talking about how Democratic winner Jason Judd’s chances were doomed in November, saying the Democratic winner would get his butt whipped when everybody could vote. There was also comment along the line his working for a union makes him anathema to local citizens.

Beware The Quiet on Carbon Dioxide

Might the EPA being covering up information pertaining to Global Warming? How could that possibly be true – this is a cabinet level agency whose sole interest is protecting American citizens by ensuring the environment receives the attention it deserves.

Grass-Roots Betrayed
Steven R. Berryman
Much has been said on all sides in evaluating recent protestors in Washington, as well as in Frederick. Just what is a legitimate “grass-roots” uprising, anyway?

It’s Expensive Going Green, But Worth It
Michael Kurtianyk
Whatever happened to going green? Didn’t it seem that the big buzzword in housing in 2008/early 2009 was going green? Has this become a fad that has passed already? What does it mean to go green anyway?

Jennifer’s Last Hurrah
Roy Meachum
Jennifer Dougherty’s defeat Tuesday resulted not from a single cause but a number of political crimes, all of them self-inflicted. One by one, she managed to offend her fellow Democrats – from Ron Young to Andrew Duck and all the faithful in between. All by herself, she managed to make seeking office tediously boring; primarily because of the way she inevitably lost – time after-time.

Why the low turnout?
Joe Charlebois
Why the low turnout in the City of Frederick elections? There are numerous reasons, so here are a few as I see it.

Happenstance Happens…
Tony Soltero
A year ago or so, there was an ugly accident on a double-decker shuttle bus that serviced Washington Nationals’ games. A couple of young male passengers were killed when the bus ran under an overpass, prompting speculation about whether the passengers had stood up on the bus at the wrong moment, thus putting themselves in harm's way.

Living in an Insane World

Monks, Monkeys and a Mad Englishman

Krabi, Thailand – This beach resort has the atmosphere of a quiet upscale scene as opposed to the honky tonk of Phuket Island or Ocean City, Maryland. The beaches, hotels and restaurants are filled with sexy Swedes. I can't seem to get away from those blue eyes and blonde hair, nor do I want to. They have taken over South Thailand.

Once again, our Roy Meachum has discovered that recovery from surgery is far more difficult than he had expected. Progress is being made, but, as most people know, set-backs are a part of the game. Hopefully he’ll be fit enough to resume on Friday.

Addressing the Algebra Crisis
Nick Diaz
In recent years, many jurisdictions throughout our country have experienced their share of educational crises – such as “whole language“ and “fuzzy math“ in general – and “TERC” in particular. Even now, the state is still in the grips of an “algebra crisis.”
