Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal and the inconvenient truth about “Mission Impossible”

http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2010/06/mcchrystal-spoke-truth-to-power.html

Jun 23, 2010 ... President Barack Obama stripped Army General Stanley McChrystal of his command of US troops in Afghanistan for making disparaging remarks ... Gee, one may only imagine that journalists will have great access to the military now – maybe not…

What we are left with is a mixed bag.

Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal got into trouble with the president and the leadership of the Democrat Party because he publicly said what many in the military and foreign policy development and execution have been saying privately for over a year.

The president had no choice but to relieve him of command.

Of course if Gen. McChrystal had uttered such observations during the Bush Administration, there would no end to the praise adulation from the very same Democrat leaders.

In the parlance of those on the left: McChrystal spoke truth to power.

Gee, I’m guessing that the appointment of General Petraeus requires a certain “suspension of disbelief.”

The Obama administration's attitude towards the military makes the Clinton administration's view look respectful...

That said, what McChrystal did was wrong. The military protects freedom of speech - it does not practice it.

Not to perseverate upon the issue, however, if the American public were to be aware of the increasingly - absolutely seething intellectual revolt of the American military over the military practices and policy of the Obama administration, it would make the alarm over the economy present like Romper Room.

If the traditional media continues to cover-up for the president, it will only add gasoline to the fire.

I have wanted to write about it; however, I usually avoid anonymous sources... (The most vocal are former Obama supporters.)

I have been observing the military closely since the late 1960s and I find the current unrest in the military unnerving.

The grunts on the frontline in Afghanistan call the war effort, “Mission Impossible.”

In spite of his extraordinary service as a black ops warrior, I have not been a McChrystal fan of the role he has played as the top military commander in Afghanistan.

However firing Gen. McChrystal for expressing the opinion of an increasingly large majority of military could precipitate an even bigger crisis.

How the president handles this current matter is critical. To paraphrase someone wiser: “The inconvenient truth is that when it comes to the substance of his criticism, most in the military think McChrystal ‘was right.’”

While we are attempting to sort it all out, be sure to read the Baltimore Reporter’s June 23, 2010 post: Obama’s Rules of Engagement In Afghanistan Will Ensure Our Failure (Filed under: General, bad foreign policy, Democratic weakness in Defense and the War on Terror) — Robert Farrow from Flopping Aces: The new rules of fighting a war….Obama style, via George F. Would that be this General Betray Us?

I’m just asking?

Oddly enough, MoveOn.org still had this Sept. 2007 ad up as of June 18, according to their Google cache. But if you go to http://pol.moveon.org/petraeus.html now, it’s gone. They kept it there for almost 3 years before taking it down all of a sudden.

Wonder why?

The Tentacle: The First Among (Too) Many - by Kevin Dayhoff

by Kevin E. Dayhoff Wednesday, June 23, 2010

The name Isaac Smith is not necessarily a household word for most people. He died on May 17, 1792. From various accounts we learn that he was a man of many talents including a war hero, farmer, doctor, and politician.

He was also a deputy sheriff who died in the line of duty when he answered the call to help a fellow officer in a tavern owned by Levi Hunt in what was then Westchester County just outside New York City.

In response to my June 16, column on TheTentacle.com, “To preserve the American Dream,” several sharp-eyed readers asked for more information about the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) observation, “Crime fighting has taken its toll. Since the first recorded police death in 1792, there have been more than 15,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.”

As a matter of fact, many news articles about tragedies that befall police officers in the line of duty will state, “Since the first recorded police death in 1792…” but never mention Deputy Smith.

So, what happened in 1792? Who was Deputy Smith and what were the circumstances of his death?

ABC Frets Over Pickle McChrystal Has Put Obama Into: Look 'Petulant' or 'Weak'

By: Brent Baker
June 22, 2010 20:47 ET

ABC, CBS and NBC all led Tuesday night with multiple stories on the “firestorm” over disrespectful coments by General Stanley McChrystal and his aides about President Obama and other administration officials, but ABC's Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos particularly despaired over the position in which McChrystal has put Obama.

Sawyer fretted that Obama “now faces a mind-boggling choice,” before Stephanopoulos kvetched “the President has really been put in a real political box” and “a very painful political position,” forcing him to choose between “looking thin-skinned and petulant” or “looking weak.”

CBS's Katie Couric didn't go that far, but she was disturbed by the burden on Obama: “This controversy is about the last thing the President needed on his plate as he deals with two wars overseas and another against an invasion of oil off the gulf coast.”

Brian Joseph Hill, who was arrested last Friday in Hagerstown, Washington County, for the alleged attempted murder of a Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy during a June 14 traffic stop, has been delivered to the Carroll County Detention Center.

Hill had been held at the Washington County Detention Center since his arrest on Friday, according to a release issued by Jonathan Light of the Sheriff's Office.

In addition to additional pending charges stemming from the five days he was fleeing apprehension, Hill faces numerous charges in the June 14 attempted shooting of a sheriff’s deputy.

Those charges include first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, use of a handgun in a felony/violent crime, possession of a handgun, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana, police said.

Following numerous tips from around the region, a search warrant was secured for a residence inside Hagerstown city limits. Hill was the subject of a nationwide search, and a reward of $10,000 for information leading to his arrest was posted last Thursday.

McChrystal is the subject of a profile in the next issue of the magazine in which he is openly critical of top officials in the Obama administration. McChrystal's aides are quoted on the record mocking Vice President Joe Biden.

After an increase that nearly doubled water rates for many residents inside and outside the city's limits last year, Westminster residents will see another small increase in water and sewer rates July 1.

Those living inside city limits using 22,500 gallons of water per quarter, an average use figure provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment, will see water bills increase from $133.60 to $137.70 and sewer bills increase from $119.82 to $123.30.

Residents living outside the city using the same amount of water and sewer will see their water bill increase from $169.34 to $179.51 but will not see an increase in their sewer bill, which would be $182.80.

Acting City Treasurer Gary Ehlers said the revenue in both the water and sewer funds from residential customers is coming as expected and staying on budget. The nonresidential revenue for both funds is significantly down from where it should be, he said.

"Businesses are hurting, and they're probably not producing as much, so they're not consuming as much," Ehlers said. "A lot of it's going to be waiting for the economy to come back."

Puppies, Kittens and NYT Pushback: The Truth About the Humane Society Of the United States

Over the course of the last few months, the Center for Consumer Freedom has ramped up its effort to educate Americans about the deceptive fundraising and spending practices of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Most Americans don’t realize that less than one half of one percent of the society’s revenue goes to support hands-on pet shelters, despite their use of tear-jerking ads like this. As our advertising campaign gained traction and donors started dropping like flies, president Wayne Pacelle launched a full-scale personal attack on the Center for Consumer Freedom’s executive director, Rick Berman.

How to Avoid Learning from Surprise Attacks, Courtesy Of the MSM and the CIA

How to Avoid Learning from Surprise Attacks, Courtesy Of the MSM and the CIA

Last week, at the Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Mo., a conference on the Korean War saw the CIA release of a large volume of long-classified documents. One of them led to this revelation:

Declassified Documents Show CIA Blunders in Korean War

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency committed two major blunders during the Korean War by underestimating the threat of a North Korean invasion of South Korea and failing to predict the intervention of Chinese communist troops until a day before it happened. . . . The revelations are contained in a set of CIA documents that were declassified on Wednesday, including a report entitled “Two Strategic Intelligence Mistakes in Korea, 1950,” which reviews the mistakes.

According to the report, a [CIA] paper dated on June 19, six days before the Korea War broke out, noted that “while [North Korea] could take control of parts of the South, it probably did not have the capability to destroy the South Korean government without Soviet or Chinese assistance,” adding “This belief caused them to ignore warnings of [North Korea’s] military buildup and mobilization near the border, clearly the ‘force protection’ intelligence that should have been most alerting to military minds.”

The CIA had been monitoring China’s moves from the start of the war, but even after the balance tipped in favor of South Korea with the success of [MacArthur’s] Inchon landing operation that choked off the communist advance, it saw no signs of Chinese intervention. On Oct. 12, it reported, “While full-scale Chinese Communist intervention in Korea must be regarded as a continuing possibility, a consideration of all known factors leads to the conclusion that such action is not probable in 1950” . . . But on the following day, 30,000 Chinese troops poured across the Duman (or Tumen) River followed by 150,000 more soldiers a few days later, leading to a full-blown battle with allied forces.

Pretty enormous mistakes, considering that the North Korean and Chinese offensives required mobilization and movement to launch-points of large military forces opposite RoK and U.S. units, something not easy for intelligence collection to miss in a tinder-box environment like the Korean peninsula at the time.

If you haven’t read in the MSM about these two enormous mistakes being revealed, it’s because this report comes from South Korea. Its source can be read in its entirety here. The New York Times has not bothered to report it. The Washington Post website contains a June 16 AP report, “CIA papers: US was caught off-guard in Korean War,” which softballs the revelations and fails to be specific about U.S. civilian and military leaders having relied in 1950 on two crucial CIA assessments that proved dead wrong, at the cost of many American and RoK soldiers’ lives.

Dear Jake Tapper: Here’s Who We’d Like To See On This Week Before You Leave

Since Jake Tapper officially took over as interim This Week host (ahead of Christiane Amanpour’s arrival this August), ABC News’ Chief White House correspondent has hauled the Sunday show straight into the 21st Century, with impressive results. This Week is now live-tweeted (a plus for those who prefer to spend their Sunday mornings at brunch instead of in front of the TV set), and clips and transcripts from the show are posted with lightning speed, sometimes even during airing (a big plus for those of us who blog about it). He’s also brought on the non-partisan group PolitiFact to fact-check the claims made by various guests during the show — a move that was initially greeted with skepticism, but has since caught fire with the guests themselves. This decidedly New Media sensibility has breathed new life into the show, and one can only hope it remains after the anchor switch.

Washington Post: Gates says McChrystal "exercised poor judgment" in remarks about U.S. officials

News Alert: Gates says McChrystal "exercised poor judgment" in remarks about U.S. officials
12:25 PM EDT Tuesday, June 22, 2010

KABUL — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Tuesday that his top commander in Afghanistan “made a significant mistake and exercised poor judgment” in making dismissive and derogatory remarks to a magazine reporter about U.S. government officials involved in Afghan policy.

Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal has been summoned to Washington to explain a Rolling Stone article that includes highly critical comments by him and his staff about Vice President Biden, U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl W. Eikenberry and other top Obama administration officials.
