Lonely is the runner that runs two miles staring at a red ball on the floor. So what happened to spring? I actually like walking and running on treadmill at the fire station, but I guess I miss the Wakefield Valley Trail. I like listening to the music at 11, but prefer the outdoor scenery.

At Birdie’s in Westminster

At Birdie's in Westminster, enjoying a great cup of coffee, some me-time, and the current art exhibition, "Three Words," by Gerard Lonesome and Eleanor Tatreaux.
It is really a fun show. Do not miss it.

"THREE WORDS:" Works by Gerard Lonesome and Eleanor Tatreaux

"Gerard and Eleanore are twins from the planet Zebulon. Their art was delivered to us by courier pigeon several months ago. In their letter to us they stated that they telephonically thought of three words to create each one of their works, thus the show name, 'Three Words.'"

"They will travel to earth in light years to collect the money made from sales of this show in order to fund the takeover of planet Earth. Until such time, however, they will allow the Earthlings to use the profits from this show to fund the first ever Pride Festival in Westminster, Maryland.

"Gerard was educated at the finest art institute on Zebulon and Eleanore is a self-taught savant.

"Enjoy the show, it maybe your last, Earthling."

Recent unwanted telemarketer phone calls

Recent unwanted telemarketer phone calls

March 30, 2018

Guess what – getting unwanted spam calls on your phone is only going to get worse. A May 11, 2017 article in the Boston Globe, “The onslaught of spam calls will keep getting worse,” reports that telemarketers have “turned the simple act of answering the phone into a nuisance, one that’s a distraction at best and a costly scam at worst…

“It’s just one of the many creative ways that phone scammers are trying to manipulate us into giving up personal information, buying questionable products and services, or just handing over money.

“No, you’re not imagining it: These spam calls are on the rise.

“According to the Federal Trade Commission, Americans made 3.5 million complaints about unwanted telemarketing calls in the 2015 fiscal year. In 2016, that number shot up to 5.3 million. According to YouMail, a call-blocking service, a staggering 2.5 billion robocalls were placed nationwide in April alone. Yes, that’s a “b” for billion…”

March 30, 2018 recent unwanted telemarketer phone calls:

Credit card scam 30Mar2018: If you an extra minute, block this number on your phone: 410-259-1432. I have not gotten many unwanted phone calls recently from telemarketer scammer-criminals, but when I do I have been left with the impression that they will use the same number for a brief period of time and call many folks in the area.

This is a poorly executed version of the credit card scam. I waited for a customer service person to pick up the phone so that I had the opportunity to ask to be put on the do not call list.

The connection was poor and the call taker was not very articulate. Perhaps off-shore.

The numbers for other recent annoying unwanted telemarketer calls:

800-781-9921: 12:47 p.m. Jan. 29, 2018 - A family member and I got a phone call today from 800-781-9921. It was poorly executed recorder robo-call. The recorded voice lacked clarity, but it claimed something to the affect that my Verizon account had been suspended and that I needed to press a number to restore the account or press another number to speak with an account representative.

877-386-6275 - 5:35 p.m. Jan. 29, 2018 no answer upon answering the phone.

800-783-9283 4:10 p.m. Jan. 31, 2018 - Same call as the other day, different phone number. It was poorly executed recorder robo-call. The recorded voice lacked clarity, but it claimed something to the affect that my Verizon account had been suspended and that I needed to press a number to restore the account or press another number to speak with an account representative.

410-259-1432 Credit card scam 30Mar2018 12:04 p.m. Friday

(410) 259-3650 at 3:57 PM on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017. I did not answer the call. I was on another phone call. No answer when i called the number back.

212-332-0849 17:08 April 6, 2017 New York – No answer upon answering. When I tried to call back immediately, I get the standard Verizon recording that your call cannot be completed as dialed…

Now it is four telemarketer calls in the last three days.

248-297-6218 Michigan 13:53 04/06/2017 No answer upon answering. I have friends with a Michigan connection, so I immediately left the room and called back. Sure enough, it was unwanted telemarketer with an automated response asking if I wanted to be placed on the "Do Not Call" list. So that is three calls in three days. I am well aware of folks who get number of calls per day, but in the past, I have not. I really wish something could be done about this.

April 6, 2017: Today, I even got a spam text from Verizon. From number: 9000070003121 What the What!? #@!!*&?? "FREE VZW MSG: Receive 1GB of free data on us! Sign up for Verizon Selects and get 1GB of data for free. View details go.vzw.com/verizonselects. Reply "X" to opt out of msgs. http://go.vzw.com/verizonselects Get 1 GB free. Thank you. If you wish to restrict all future marketing text messages from VZW, reply 'Q'.

But then again, I have always figured that the telemarketers have always worked in collusion with Verizon – it must bring in an enormous amount of revenue.

According to a page on the Federal Trade Commission concerning robocalls, found here: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/feature-0025-robocalls

Vea esta página en español

If you answer the phone and hear a recorded message instead of a live person, it's a robocall. We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of illegal robocalls because internet-powered phone systems have made it cheap and easy for scammers to make illegal calls from anywhere in the world, and to hide from law enforcement by displaying fake caller ID information.

To date, the FTC has brought more than a hundred lawsuits against over 600 companies and individuals responsible for billions of illegal robocalls and other Do Not Call violations.

The FTC also is leading several initiatives to develop technology-based solutions. Those initiatives include a series of robocall contests that challenge tech gurus to design tools that block robocalls and help investigators track down and stop robocallers. We’re also encouraging industry efforts to combat caller ID spoofing. Here’s the FTC’s game plan to combat robocalls:

Continue aggressive law enforcement
Build better tools for investigating robocalls
Coordinate with law enforcement, industry, and other stakeholders
Stimulate and pursue technological solutions.

Details about the FTC’s Robocall Initiatives

2015 DetectaRobo Contest
As part of the National Day of Civic Hacking, the FTC is challenging techies to use call data to predict which incoming calls are robocalls.

2015 Robocalls: Humanity Strikes Back Contest
The FTC is challenging the DEF CON community to create a tool that people can use to block and forward unwanted robocalls automatically. Forwarded calls will go to a honeypot — a data collection system that researchers and investigators can use to study the calls.

2014 Zap Rachel Contest: At DEF CON 22, the FTC challenged tech gurus to help us zap Rachel and her robocall buddies by creating the next-generation robocall honeypot.

2012-2013 Robocall Challenge: The agency challenged innovators to create solutions that will block illegal robocalls. The challenge is now closed and the three winners with groundbreaking ideas were announced in April 2013.

2012 Robocall Summit: The FTC hosted a one-day public event on Thursday, October 18, 2012 to discuss the rapid rise in illegal robocalls and identify potential solutions. You can view videos and PowerPoint presentations from the event’s panels.

Bowman family awarded annual Ag Center Pioneer Award

A year ago, I wrote - Time Flies “Bowman family awarded annual Ag Center Pioneer Award” by Kevin Dayhoff February 24, 2017

Romantic that I am, I took my wife out on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, to the annual Carroll County Agriculture Center dinner. Since 1993, the annual dinner has been used as an opportunity to honor individuals and businesses with the "Pioneer Award," in recognition for longstanding service to the Carroll County agriculture community and the Agriculture Center,

This year's award went to the R.D. Bowman family, which has been a cornerstone of the agricultural community through the family businesses that date back to 1928. Dirk Bowman and his wife Julie attended the dinner to receive the award on behalf of the family.

Dirk, his brother Dale, and his sister Dawn DeVivo are the third-generation owners of the Westminster feed sales business, R.D. Bowman & Sons Inc., and the Home & Garden Center, which opened in 1981.

According to a March 24, 1993 article in The Baltimore Sun by writers Ellie Baublitz and Tom Keyser, "In 1928, Ralph Dutterer Bowman bought a little country grocery store in Union Mills on a dirt road that is now Route 97, or Littlestown Pike. He operated the store for more than 30 years, during which time the big event was the Friday night banana auction.

The Carroll County sheriff’s office has been a whirlwind of activity ever since retired Maryland State Police Captain Jim DeWees took office last December 2 as Carroll County’s 58th sheriff.

DeWees takes office at a time of great changes in law enforcement. Not to be overlooked is the heightened scrutiny – and danger – in which law enforcement officers find themselves these days.

Among the many new approaches initiated recently; the sheriff’s office has announced a long over-due initiative to equalize the due process, retirement, and compensation disparities between the sheriff’s deputies who work the county roads in a law enforcement and investigations capacity with that of the men and women who work as correctional officers in the county detention facility.
