It is wonderful to have the Westminster Downtown Farmers' Market begin a new season. We saw so many friends and really enjoyed getting outside to spend time with local vendors. Hats off to the newly elected Mayor Mona Becker and looking forward to another season with the market's manager and huge downtown Main Street promoter Brooke Hagerty. National Vietnam War Veterans Day March 29

National Vietnam War Veterans Day March 29, 1973:

Today - March 29th is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, marking the day U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, disestablished on March 29, 1973.

Caroline and I stopped by the Vietnam Memorial at Willis and Court Street over the weekend and cleaned-up the area. This is the 4th year of Vietnam Veterans Day – I think in the future we ought to hold a small ceremony at the memorial like we do for Memorial Day, Veterans Day and over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

This year, for Woman's History Month and National Vietnam War Veterans Day, I wrote a story about Barbara Robbins. Robbins is something of a legend - in a hushed tone of voice - in the agency. I have always found this story so haunting and sad: Barbara Robbins was the first female killed in the line of duty in Vietnam. Please find the story here: https://www.baltimoresun.com/maryland/carroll/lifestyles/cc-lt-dayhoff-032121-20210319-zsdd6doivjadbi275p234jsqyy-story.html

Mission BBQ opened today in Westminster

Mission BBQ opened today in Westminster where Friendly's Restaurant used to be located at 584 Jermor Way

Friendly's had closed at that location on Nov. 27, 2018. According to an article in the Carroll County Times on Nov. 28, 2018, "The company that was founded in 1935 the middle of the Great Depression in Springfield, Massachusetts, and would become Friendly Ice Cream Corp. filed for bankruptcy in 2011, according to the Wall Street Journal.."

It was a great day. At 12-noon, Westminster Police Officer Terrence McGowan sang the National Anthem as fire equipment surrounded the restaurant and Westminster Fire Department Tower 3 flew the American Flag.

Vietnam vets were treated to sandwich. Mission BBQ chose to open today - March 29th on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, marking the day U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, disestablished on March 29, 1973.

13th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event

Leslie Krebs-White, the community educator at Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County, https://www.rapecrisiscc.org/ has been in touch with the CC NAACP branch and asked that we help spread the word about a popular fundraiser - the 13th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.

Since 1978 RCIS has provided free counseling and support services to victims of sexual violence and their families. RCIS also offers prevention education programs and professional training. Rape Crisis provides a 24-hour hot line and therapy services to both male and female victims of sexual violence. All services are free and confidential. Every dollar donated makes a huge difference in a survivor’s healing journey at RCIS.

The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event helps provide awareness to these valuable services in our community.

Please see the attached flyer and visit www.walkamilecc.org for more information.

Ms. Krebs-White reported, “We are also looking for sponsors if you know anyone who may be interested. Thank you so much for all your help…”

Sincerely, Leslie Krebs-White, Community Educator

Office:  410.857.0900

Disclosure: Yup – in full disclosure I have helped support RCIS, anonymously as a private citizen, as a public official and as a fire and police chaplain since the days in which it was known as the “The Carroll County Sexual Assault Center,” before it changed its name in 1985 to RCIS. For many years the director of Rape Crisis was a Carroll County Public School classmate of mine, and from time to time I have ghost-written a few articles for the organization.

On March 25, 1996, I wrote, in part, “Rape Crisis provides a valuable service to the community involving an ugly crime. In an ideal world, such services would not be needed, unfortunately, Rape Crisis provides a needed program in Carroll County. A few of the services that come quickly to mind are: 1.Victim walk-in service. 2. Accompaniment for medical attention, police investigation and court appearances. 3. Individual, group and support group therapy service, 4. 24 Hour hotline, and 5. Community education and professional training. “Rape Crisis provides these valuable counseling, support and advocacy programs for free and maintains a person's ability to seek help anonymously…”

Celebrating the legacy of the “Six Nations” – the Haudenosaunee Confederation pre-colonial government in Carroll County

A Historical Society of Carroll County 184th County Birthday presentation by local historian and writer Kevin Dayhoff on January 23, 2021 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Every year the Historical Society of Carroll Co. hosts a celebration of our county’s birthday in mid-January.

Out of respect for the safety protocols for the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020, this year, the 184th anniversary is celebrated live by way of Zoom. Registration is required to access the program. Registration is available at https://hsccmd.org/event/virtual-carroll-county-birthday/

Before 1744, the predominant government in Carroll County was the Haudenosaunee Nation — the “Six Nations.” The Haudenosaunee played a key role in the evolution of American democracy.

“Much of our current way of life is owed to the heritage and legacy of the Haudenosaunee Nation. Several main roads in Carroll County have their beginnings as Haudenosaunee trading routes. And several towns in Carroll County — Patapsco for example — had their beginnings as Haudenosaunee settlements.

It is interesting to note that the Haudenosaunee were a matriarchal society – that is a society that is run by women. Women owned all of the property in the long house. They were also in charge of the farming operations. As a matter of fact - Iroquois men moved into the house of his wife’s family after they got married.

The Algonquians arrived around 800 B.C. The original Algonquians divided into a number of distinct tribe-nations, which formed a multi-nation government under a constitution that dates to approximately Aug. 31, 1142.

The Algonquians called themselves the “Haudenosaunee” meaning “People of the Longhouse” and their government was one of the first true participatory democracies in history. It also incorporated full political and leadership rights for women.

“It was not until after the Treaty of the Six Nations was signed on July 4, 1744, with the Haudenosaunee Nation, and the dispute over the Mason-Dixon Line was settled in 1767 that settlers started to come to Carroll County in greater numbers…

Lessons From a Tourism Pushback in Hawaii – Skift

https://skift.com/2021/01/07/lessons-from-a-tourism-pushback-in-hawaii/

Fascinating discussion about post-COVID-19 tourism... FTA: Maui resident comments range from "[a]ll of Hawaii needs to get rid of tourism and go more into agriculture" to suggestions on controlling the amount of rental car availability.

Kauai's survey results express disappointment in the proposed destination plan's failure "to acknowledge the core problem (overtourism)" and that "the Steering Committee is deluding itself if it believes that Kauai residents' tourism-related concerns and hostility are primarily due to insensitive tourists, rather than the direct result of there being too many tourists."

A shout out to those working the long Thanksgiving holiday.

A shout out to those working the long Thanksgiving holiday. Please keep in your prayers, our men and women in uniform, our police officers, firefighters, emergency dispatchers and EMS providers; who will all through the holiday in harm's way, giving us an opportunity to have a safe holiday.

As we gather with our families over the holidays, may we ask that we be given patience, resolve, and wisdom in all that lies ahead for our great nation? At a time like this in our nation's history, I am reminded that Thomas Jefferson once advised, "I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend."

On this Thanksgiving weekend be ever thankful that we can laugh, enjoy our families, revel in our freedoms, celebrate our great community, and be stronger because of our differences.

Robert McCurdy 2018 newspaper article - Pleasant Valley Fire Company firefighter bagpiper

Robert McCurdy 2018 Pleasant Valley Fire Company firefighter bagpiper - - Re-reading a really nice Carroll County article from May 21, 2018, about a local hero, Robert McCurdy, written by Jon Kelvey. Give it a minute or two to read. It is well-worth your time.

Pleasant Valley firefighter lends his pipes to 12 years of 'Amazing Grace' in Dulaney Valley by JON KELVEY CARROLL COUNTY TIMES | MAY 21, 2018

McCurdy is a retired Baltimore City firefighter and a volunteer firefighter with the Pleasant Valley fire company and first performed at Dulaney Valley in 2007 in honor of Sgt. Brian R. Conner, a member of the Maryland Army National Guard, who was killed in action in Iraq. Conner was also a Baltimore City firefighter.

“The deputy chief in charge of the honor guard at the time had asked the folks down there if I would be able to join in since they were honoring a firefighter as well as his being in the military,” McCurdy said. “They graciously said yes.”

McCurdy has been playing there ever since.

RunMoore running shoe store, Westminster Maryland

I finally got around to replacing a pair of worn-out running shoes at RunMoore, the shoe store for runners at 28 W. Main Street, in Westminster. www.letsrunmoore.com 443-201-8203

Caroline and I have purchased a lot of shoes from this store. For the casual or serious runner or walker, this store is epic.  The customer service is like the old days in Westminster when the stores were all family owned and the sales representatives were actually personally interested in you having a positive customer experience.

Earlier in the year, at the beginning of the pandemic, and stores were being shuttered, Caroline called the store about replacing a pair of shoes. They keep great records of your past purchases - and Caroline pretty-much knew what she needed. Later in the day, Caroline was able to pull-up in front of the store, give them a call, at which time, they brought the shoes to the car and put them in the trunk. No contact. Engage, adapt, overcome.

Downtown Westminster is awesome.
