Heatwave Grips Carroll County

Westminster, Maryland experienced a drastic shift from mild, unsettled conditions to an intense early-summer heatwave between June 27 and July 3, 2026. Daily hot temperatures climbed sharply from the low 80s to over 100°F, while overnight lows rose from the upper 60s to a muggy 80°F.

July 3, 2026 – WESTMINSTER MD — Residents of Westminster endured a severe and sweltering stretch of weather as the last week of June oozed into early July, marked by a relentless escalation in temperatures. 

What began as a mild, unsettled weekend quickly transformed into an oppressive, record-challenging heat wave that triggered multiple weather alerts across the region.

The period opened on June 27 and 28 with strong thunderstorms and cloud cover that kept the region somewhat tempered. Highs reached a manageable 81°F to 84°F, accompanied by overnight lows of 69°F.

By June 29, the atmosphere began to clear, and the heat began its climb. Westminster saw the mercury hit 90°F under partly cloudy skies. This proved to be merely a preview, as June 30 brought mostly sunny skies and a jump to 95°F, officially kicking off a dangerous stretch of extreme heat.

As the calendar flipped to July 1, residents experienced the brunt of the mid-summer surge. The area recorded scorching, humid highs soaring to 103°F, with the overnight low providing almost no relief, dropping only to 75°F. The apex of the heatwave arrived on July 2, bringing blistering sunshine and a peak high of 107°F, followed by a remarkably warm, stifling overnight low of 79°F.

Heading into July 3, the relentless heatwave continued unabated with the region enduring a high of 105°F and an overnight low of 80°F. The combination of extreme temperatures and humidity prompted local authorities to issue persistent Extreme Heat Warnings throughout the latter half of the week.

While a few thunderstorms offered minor, localized disruptions during this period, the overarching story was the dangerous, triple-digit heat that forced locals to seek shelter and stay hydrated.
