Edward Orlee Petry, 90, of Westminster, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born January 3, 1932, in Carroll County, he was the son of David Oscar, Sr., and Mabel A. (Robertson) Petry. He was the cherished husband of Ann Linda Petry, whom he married August 29, 1987; and the former husband of the late Anita Petry.

Edward was a retired Sgt. Major of the United States Army. He dedicated 31 years of service to our country and was in both the Korean and Vietnam War. He spoke multiple languages, was a radio operator while in Korea, and loved jumping out of planes. He was wounded in the Korean War and received the purple heart among other numerous decorations and merits.

Edward was a people person and loved to make others laugh. After his military career he continued working at various companies including Yingling General Tire, Eagle Oil, budget analyst for the Maryland Military, and security at Random House.

He loved to travel with his wife and especially enjoyed going to the Inlet in Ocean City- sitting on the boardwalk and visiting National Parks across the United States "gawking" at wild animals.

He was a member of the Westminster Fire Company, Westminster Kiwanis Club, American Legion Carroll Post #31, and a parishioner of St. John Catholic Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are children Carole Ann Spring and husband Robert of Westminster, Michael Carr of Westminster, Daniel Carr and wife Terri of Spring Grove, PA, and David Millberry of Westminster; grandchildren Christopher, Jennifer, Lauren, Trevor, Noah, Braiden, Karen, and Diane; 7 great-grandchildren; sister Doris Zeitz; half-sisters Patricia Petry Yingling, and Judy Petry Zepp; half-brothers Thomas Petry, Richard Petry, and Billy Petry; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and former wife he was predeceased daughter Kathleen Mathias; and brothers Sterling, Junior, Donald, Bobby, and half-brother Jeff.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 12 Noon at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster. The family will welcome friends one hour prior the start of mass. Inurnment with military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery.

American Legion member Robert Leroy Leppo, 90, of Westminster

Robert Leroy Leppo, 90, of Westminster, died Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the Dove House.

Born January 4, 1932, in Westminster, he was the son of the late Charles Leppo and Sarah Beaver Leppo.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Daisy Elizabeth Leppo who died on August 11, 2015.

Before retiring Robert worked for Black & Decker, Martins Foods, The Arc and Direct to You Gas Station.

Robert served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a Scout Master of Pack 393 at Grace Lutheran Church, a member of American Legion Carroll Post #31. He was an honorary member of the Blue Sox baseball team, and they retired his jersey #32. He enjoyed going to the Westminster Senior Center and was an avid Redskins fan.

He is survived by his children Robert Leppo and wife Bertha of Westminster, Tom Leppo of Hanover, PA and Lisa Leppo of Westminster; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; sister Shirley Barnes of Westminster. He was predeceased by his brother Norman Leppo.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 30, 2022, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 31, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Richard A. Jasper, of Westminster, MD

Richard A. Jasper, of Westminster, MD, son of the late Esther Jasper Collier and Charles Collier of Ellicott City, MD passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 22, 2022. 

Richard grew up in Ellicott City, MD and served overseas in Germany for the US Army with honorable discharge in 1962. He was a current member of the Carroll Post 31 of the American Legion in Westminster, and a past member of the American Legion Sykesville Memorial Post 223. 

He married Gloria Justice April 15, 1970, and made a home in Howard and Carroll Counties. 

Richard worked loyally at Transco, one of the Williams Companies for 33 years. Richard was also an avid horseman with active participation at The League of Maryland Horsemen, serving as president for many terms. In recent years he enjoyed calling BINGO at the Westminster Senior Center and spent Saturday mornings drinking coffee and solving the world's problems with his friend Mike Carter. 

Richard was predeceased by siblings Tommy Jasper, Al Jasper, Bill Jasper, Hazel Geiman, Ann Senterfitt, Georgie Collier, Jenny Hampton and best friend Ralph Mullins. He is survived by his brother Joe Collier. In addition to his loving wife, Gloria, he is also survived by his children Robert Jasper of Port St. Lucie, FL, Frank Jasper of Port St. Lucie, FL, Spring Haley-Yox of Littlestown, PA, Amy Bay of Union Bridge, MD and Hope Jasper of State College, PA. Grandchildren Wyatt Haley, Travis Drake, Brianna Hunt, Shane Haley, Shelby Bay, Kayla Jasper, Adam Jasper, Christopher Bay, Blakely DeWetering, Malcolm Liu and Great Grandchildren Jaxon Haley, Jaxon Drake, Gunner Barnett, Henslie Hunt. 

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Obituary: Michael Thomas Chapman, 77, of Westminster

Obituary: Michael Thomas Chapman, 77, of Westminster, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Carroll Hospital Center.

Born July 30, 1944, in Kulpmont, PA., he was the son of the late Thomas M. and Margaret Mary (Graham) Chapman. He often shared stories of his childhood antics of growing up in “coal country” with family and friends.

Michael earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from La Salle University. After graduating he married and started a family in Ambler, PA. 

He and the family shortly thereafter made the move to Maryland for a job with the Social Security Administration. 

He enjoyed a distinguished career of 33 years in federal law enforcement until his retirement in 2004. He was an avid reader and cruciverbalist (he enjoyed successfully completing the daily crossword puzzles). Mike’s love of colorful and descriptive language and his gift of gab were constant sources of stories, tall tales, and most especially jokes. 

In retirement, Mike was a former firearm instructor who always enjoyed playing pool, trapshooting and spending time with a multitude of friends.

Michael was a member of the Carroll Post 31 of the American Legion in Westminster where he served as former Commander and Treasurer for the Sons of the American Legion. He was also a member of the VFW Molleville Farm Post 467 in Westminster, and the Carroll County Gun Club where he participated in the Heart of Maryland Trap League.

Surviving Michael are his children Sandra Rocco and husband Phillip of Blackwood, NJ., Michael A. Chapman of Havre de Grace, and Steven Chapman and wife Nicole of Edgewood; grandchildren Phillip, Andrew, Marissa, Katherine, Abagail, Jacob, Rachel, Steven and Alexya; great-granddaughter Aubrey; and former spouse Dolores Chapman of Sewell, NJ. He will also be missed by long-time friend Jeanne Hersh and her children William and Mary of Westminster, MD.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Eric Woolman Obituary (1954 - 2022) - Westminster, MD - Carroll County Times

Eric Lee Woolman, 67, formerly of Westminster, died on Monday, January 3, 2022, at Carroll Hospital Center from Pneumonia. Born on July 3, 1954, in Trenton, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Joseph S. Woolman and Eleanore Wood Woolman. 

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sheri-Anne Woolman. Eric graduated from Pennsbury High School in 1972 and Clarion State College in 1977 with a degree in Economics and Marketing. Before retiring, Eric was the Assistant Manager at the Sherwin Williams Westminster 140 store. 

He was a member of the American Legion Carroll Post No. 31 and former member of the Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge #46 AF & AM. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Kelly Nobile (Carl), and Amanda Volk (William) both of Westminster; sisters Jan Birkins (Ran) of Milton, DE, and Lori Lessard (Bruce) of Brooksville, FL; and grandsons Lincoln and Benjamin Volk. 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 East Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157. COVID precautions should be practiced, and masks are mandatory. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Troop 381 for their scholarship fund to enable local scouts to attend Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM. Eric visited this challenging scout ranch in 1976 just prior to becoming an Eagle Scout and remembered this positive experience as fabulous and a terrific way to meet scouts from across the United States. Barbara Long Jackson October 18, 1946 - December 31, 2021 

Barbara Long Jackson, age 75, of New Windsor, died unexpectedly Friday, December 31, 2021, at her home. Born October 18, 1946, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Thomas Long and Betty Groft Ridings. Twice married, her first husband was Donald F. Anthony Sr. who died in 1998. Her second husband of 19 years is Darnell Jackson.

Barbara was employed at Carroll Lutheran Village for 25 years as a certified nursing assistant. She was a member of Linganore United Methodist Church, Unionville; a life member of the auxiliary of VFW Post #467 and a member of the auxiliaries of American Legion Post #31 and the Moose Lodge #1381, all of Westminster. She was also a member of the Littlestown Eagles Aerie #2226. Barbara enjoyed music, dancing, shopping, going out to eat, flowers, gardening, collecting "guardian angels", cooking and hummingbirds.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are children, Donald F. Anthony Jr. and wife Sandy of Cascade, Dana S. Collins and husband Jack of Waynesboro, PA, Michael A. Anthony of New Windsor and Jennifer N. Jackson of Taneytown; 10 grandchildren, Ernest, Christopher, Nathan, Cheryl, Faith, Tori, Jaylynn, Jada, Heather and Eric; 14 great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Ann Jackson of Taneytown, sister-in-law, Lynn Jackson of Emmitsburg and brother-in-law, Eddie Nokes and wife Cheryl of Westminster. She was predeceased by son, Mark Allen Anthony in 1965.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 6 at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, with Rev. Darrell Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Linganore Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 5 at the funeral home.

Have you ever been in a cemetery and saw coins laying on a tombstone? There is actually a reason behind it. 

While visiting some cemeteries you may notice that headstones marking certain graves have coins on them, left by previous visitors to the grave. 

These coins have distinct meanings when left on the headstones of those who gave their life while serving in America's military, and these meanings vary depending on the denomination of coin. 

A coin left on a headstone or at the grave site is meant as a message to the deceased soldier's family that someone else has visited the grave to pay respect. 

Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited. 

A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served with him in some capacity. 

By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the solider when he was killed. 

According to tradition, the money left at graves in national cemeteries and state veterans cemeteries is eventually collected, and the funds are put toward maintaining the cemetery or paying burial costs for indigent veterans. 

In the US, this practice became common during the Vietnam War, due to the political divide in the country over the war; leaving a coin was seen as a more practical way to communicate that you had visited the grave than contacting the soldier's family, which could devolve into an uncomfortable argument over politics relating to the war. 

Some Vietnam veterans would leave coins as a "down payment" to buy their fallen comrades a beer or play a hand of cards when they would finally be reunited. 

The tradition of leaving coins on the headstones of military men and women can be traced to as far back as the Roman Empire.

Kenneth Levi Colson, age 84, of Westminster, MD, died on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Carroll County Hospital in Westminster, MD. 

He was the husband of Carolyn J. Colson (nee Fava). He was born January 10, 1938, in Watersville, MD, the son of the late Arthur W. Colson and the late Madeline Colson (nee Davis). 

Kenneth served in the US Army, Parachutist; Quartermaster -Rigger, from 1960-1962; He was a Member of the American Legion Post #31 in Westminster, 

He was a diesel mechanic at Penske Truck Leasing and enjoyed Penske racing, enjoyed flea marketing and Fishing, and enjoyed his family and eating crabs; and loved his dog Molly. 

He was the father of Shelley Ostrum and husband Ray and daughter Alisha Lauritzen and the late Kelley Colson and Steven W. Colson (died on 1/8/22); also survived by 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild; brother of Robert Colson and wife Jane, Arthur Jerry Colson and wife Penny, Janet Moore and husband Mac, Shirley Loveless, Cathy Tracy and the late George Lowery; and late stepfather Percy Lowery.

Steven Colson Obituary (1964 - 2022) - Winfield, MD - Carroll County Times

Steven Wayne Colson, age 57, of Westminster, died Saturday, January 8, 2022, at his home.

He was born July 19, 1964, in Olney, Maryland, the son of father Kenneth Colson and wife Carolyn of Westminster, and mother Barbara Keller (nee Combs) formerly of Taneytown, and her husband the late John Keller. 

Steve grew up with a love of motocross and playing guitar. He was an exceptional guitar player and musician. He played for several different bands in the 80's, such as Life or Death and A.K.A. Jeff and Steve. He was proud to have played places, such as Hammerjacks and played at the Preakness in 1991. He later started giving guitar lessons out of his home. He was very good with teaching kids. 

Steve was a compassionate person with a soft heart. He loved animals, especially cats. He was very close with his family and spoke to his parents every day. Steve will be terribly missed by his family and friends. His beautiful smile and his beautiful eyes will never be forgotten. Steve would want everyone to ROCK on! 

Surviving in addition to his parents are his sister Shelley Ostrum and husband Ray and sister Alisha Laritzen; predeceased by sister Kelley Colson; also survived by three nephews; one great nephew and two nieces; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and Longtime friend Kim Jenkins.

Tribute to Jim Reter

Longstanding Carroll County NAACP member Jim Reter passed away on January 2, 2018. 

For those who are not aware, Jim was one of the first members of the Carroll County NAACP when the branch reformed in May 1999, after an absence from the community since 1993.

Jim was a firefighter, an Army veteran of the Korean War and Delegate Nancy Stocksdale’s brother.

On Jan. 20, 2018, Carroll County NAACP member Larry Helminiak wrote, “Remembering Jim Reter”

When I think of the Republican Party in Carroll County, I think of Jim Reter. I remember going to vote at the polling place and seeing Jim Reter passing out Republican literature. I remember going to Republican dinners and seeing Jim Reter's name on table signs.

In 2002 I became a member of the Carroll County Republican Central Committee. Jim Reter was there.

What I'm saying is that every time I went to anything Republican, Jim Reter was there.

A few years ago my son and I attended an NAACP fundraising dinner and saw that Jim Reter had a table.

Turns out that Jim was an NAACP member, and convinced me to join. I have been a member ever since.

Jim was a great person and a great Republican and will be sorely missed.

With heavy hearts, the Carroll County Republican Central Committee CCRCC reports the passing of a great Carroll County Republican, Jim Reter. Recently, Mr. Reter's years of service were recognized by the CCRCC with the Reese Starner Award. Join us in praying for God's comfort for Jim's beloved family and friends as they mourn his loss.

Obituary for James Ellsworth Reter

James Ellsworth "Jim" Reter, 86, of Westminster, passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Levindale Hospital in Baltimore.

Jim was born on October 24, 1931 in Baltimore and was the son of the late William Henry and Susie Rebecca Reter. He was the long-time companion of Louise Black of Westminster.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a Corporal during the Korean War, from 1951 to 1954.

He was a graduate of Franklin High School, class of 1948; and Western Maryland College in 1957 with a Masters of Business Administration in Economics. Jim began his working career at his family's store, "Reter's Groceries,” in Glyndon.

He was the Comptroller for Carroll County Public Schools, and during retirement owned his own tax business, James E. Reter Company, Inc., until 2016. Jim was serving as a current elected official for the Carroll County Republican Central Committee.

Jim was a volunteer fireman at Glyndon Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and was honored as Firefighter of the Year in 1986.

He was actively involved in numerous organizations including the Kiwanis Club where he served as past president, V.F.W. Molleville Farm Post #467, Westminster, and American Legion Carroll Post #31…

Westminster, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1381, Korean War Veterans Association Shenandoah Valley Chapter #313, Historical Society of Carroll County, Carroll County Arts Council, the Board at Parrs Ridge Community, and the Church of the Ascension in Westminster. Jim enjoyed traveling and politics.

Surviving him are sons Ron Reter, William Reter II and wife Kathy, Thomas Reter and wife Susan all of Westminster; brother Calvin Reter and wife Betty of Reisterstown; sister Nancy Stocksdale of Westminster; 6 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
