#Baseball, #Westminster, #Orioles, #History, #Carroll County,
#Maryland,
Roses are red, violets are blue. I hate snow ... and you
should too.
For those with a bad case of chionophobia — a fear of snow —
no worries, spring is near. We know this because last Monday was Opening Day
for the Baltimore Orioles.
After yet another unexpected Maryland snowstorm, the weather
gave way to warmer temperatures and blue skies on March 31.
According to The Baltimore Sun, "a sellout crowd of
46,685 filled the ballpark" to see the Orioles defeat the defending world
champion Boston Red Sox, 2-1.
Baseball has a long history in Baltimore. The current
Baltimore Orioles franchise began playing baseball in 1954 in the old Memorial
Stadium on 33rd Street, after it was announced on Sept. 28, 1953, that the St.
Louis Browns were moving to Baltimore.
Historian Jay Graybeal researched the event for the
Historical Society of Carroll County several years ago and wrote, "One of
the great stories from the County's sports history is the June 1885 baseball
game between the Westminster Base Ball Club and the Baltimore Orioles. …"
Graybeal quoted an old newspaper article which noted,
"The Westminster Base Ball Club on Monday last, the 22d, won the most
remarkable victory in their history, defeating (the) Baltimore team by a score
of 9 to 7."
On that same date in 1962, Boog Powell became the first
player to hit a ball over the hedge in center field at Memorial Stadium,
according to a book of Orioles history by Ted Patterson.
Go Orioles.

On March 30, 1923, in the depths of prohibition, a local newspaper rang the alarm that “About 25 men, all from Baltimore, it is reported, attempted to raid McGinnis Distillery in Carroll County, just east of Westminster.”
It needs to be noted that although prohibition, known as the
“Volstead Act,” did not go into effect throughout the nation until January 20,
1920; Carroll countians voted to outlaw the sale of alcohol in the county
six-years earlier - in 1914, according to research by historian Jay Graybeal
for the Historical Society of Carroll County.
Prohibition remained the law of the land until President
Franklin Roosevelt signed into law the Cullen-Harrison Act on March 23, 1933.

In 1945, institutional racism in Maryland was a hot topic.
In part, the discussion was driven by pragmatism in that, according to research
by historian Kenneth D. Durr, more than 20 percent of the population in
Baltimore was said to be black. But because of housing segregation laws, the
city's black population was squeezed into 2 percent of the city's land mass.
Lowell Ensor would later assume the office of president of
the college, now McDaniel, on July 1, 1947, according to Lightner's history of

Current tensions in Ukraine bring back memories of Cold War
Eagle Archives
By Kevin Dayhoff, March 19, 2014
Who can remember the school air raid drill in which you were
to hide underneath your desk – or in the hallway? Remember, drop to the floor,
duck and cover your head, to protect yourself from flying debris and getting
burned by the nuclear blast. Some schools distributed dog tags so that the
bodies of the dead students could easily be identified.
On March 16, 1972, an article in The Carroll Record
explained one of the basic building blocks of the Cold War era, the fallout
shelter.
"Today's Paper Has Community Fallout Shelter Plan — The
new community fallout shelter plan for Carroll County is included in this
newspaper. …"
The article reported, "According to the County
commissioners, 'The information developed in the plan could save the lives of
thousands of persons in the event of attack. …' "
The recent tensions between Russia and the West over the
civil unrest in the Ukraine and Crimean Peninsula have renewed an interest in
Cold War nostalgia.

Streets and history of Westminster intersect at odd angles
[Eagle Archives]
By Kevin Dayhoff March 4, 2014 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archives-0302-20140304,0,1024009.story
Many residents today may not recall the crazy-quilt
"dog leg" intersection of John, Bond and Main streets, or the equally
mismatched collision of Main and Liberty streets, Railroad Avenue, and the
train tracks in Westminster.
Years ago, these intersections did not look anything like
they do now. Today, they form a perfect "cross."
But years ago, a motorist traveling south on John Street or
Railroad Avenue had to make a 90-degree right turn onto Main Street, then hang
a quick left to get on either Liberty or Bond Street and get through the
intersection.
It may have worked well enough in the horse and buggy days.
But by the 1970s, it was nuts.
Finally, sanity ruled and the two intersections and the
bridge over the railroad tracks on East Green Street were rebuilt in the
mid-1970s.
Many years ago, the area that we now know as John and
Carroll streets in Westminster was known as the "space between."

Baltimore Orioles baseball, celebrating 60 years of Orioles
baseball.
March 31, 2014
The Baltimore Orioles have a wonderful website, “Celebrating
60 years of Orioles Baseball” here: http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/bal/fan_forum/60_anniversary_mediaguides.jsp Well, at least that is where the media
guides, 1954-2013 are located.
I have written quite a number of stories on baseball,
baseball in Carroll County, Md., and the Baltimore
Orioles, http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/search/label/Sports%20Baltimore%20Orioles,
over the years and have attended a few spring trainings in Florida.
Next week’s column will touch upon some of the history of
Orioles baseball. That column will be published here: http://www.baltimoresun.com/search/dispatcher.front?Query=Kevin+Dayhoff&target=adv_all
I just spent a great deal of time thoroughly enjoying going
through the 1954 media guide which may be found here: http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/bal/fan_forum/media_guides.jsp?loc=1954
Please enjoy… Just saying. Play ball.

Baltimore Orioles spring training schedule at Ed Smith
stadium in Sarasota Florida for Feb. and March 2014
February 19, 2014
Ed Smith Stadium
2700 12th St, Sarasota, FL 34237
Today I had the opportunity to stop by Ed Smith stadium.
Although I wrote an article or two from spring training for the Baltimore
Orioles for a number of years, 2014 marks the second year that I have not
covered any of the Florida Grapefruit League. I guess I miss it.
Today we stopped by the stadium to grab some lunch with some
dear friends from Westminster, Sueann and Bobby Myers…
According to Baltimore
Orioles MLB.com, http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/spring_training/ballpark.jsp?c_id=bal,
“2014 marks the fifth consecutive Spring Training for the Orioles in Sarasota,
and the fourth in the renovated Ed Smith Stadium. With its modern amenities
mixed with historical Florida architecture, Ed Smith Stadium has truly become “Birdland
South.’”

You may have noticed that the Baltimore Orioles have gotten off to a good start so far in the young 2012 season.
Hope springs eternal, and spring makes me eternally hopeful, so it's only fitting to note that baseball was also on the minds of Carroll County readers more than 110 years ago.
On this day in 1899, a local newspaper carried a news story that the local "Westminster Base Ball Club" was looking for a few good baseball players…
"The Westminster Base Ball Club ... desires to win the championship and toward that end desires to have a team composed of good players who will be able to play good base ball, and will take full advantage of the five mile limit in order to obtain the players if they can not be gotten in this city." …
What is that 'five-mile limit' all about? We may need to call upon local historian and Carroll County baseball history expert Dan Hartzler.
[…]
According to Mary Ann Ashcraft, an historian for the Historical Society, "Baseball was a big draw in all parts of the county, and competition between local teams often got very intense…"
[…]
In the April 22, 1899 article that appeared in the now-defunct Democratic Advocate newspaper, it is interesting to review the set of qualifications desired by the Westminster Base Ball Club.
“While no roughness or rowdyism on the team will be permitted, the team will be no kid glove affair, to the detriment of good ball playing, but every effort will be made to obtain a representative club of conscientious, efficient, and well-behaved ball players…
“The team announced last week will be permanent only so far as the members, so announced, are able to play good ball and play regularly.”
Where do I sign up? Put me in coach, I’m ready to play.

Baseball memories are a field of dreams in Carroll County and other Oriole Baseball stories By Kevin Dayhoff
By Kevin Dayhoff, February 26, 2012
In 1895 local newspapers, “carried a baseball column every
week in the spring editions,” according to research by historian and Maryland
State Senator Joe Getty.
Getty wrote about his research in the early 1990s for the
Historical Society of Carroll County. “Following the Civil War, the sport of
baseball became increasingly popular in Carroll County. Large groups of
spectators would gather at the local ballfields to watch their friends and
neighbors take on the baseball clubs from nearby communities. The games not
only provided entertainment but also competitive outlets for rivalries between
Carroll County's towns and villages.”
Many readers have shared that some of their best childhood
memories centered on sports, especially baseball; whether it was pick-up
neighborhood baseball or attending local Little League or Babe Ruth League
baseball games.
When I visited the Orioles spring training practice in
Sarasota on February 23, I enjoyed chatting with the team’s Director of Public
Relations, Monica Barlow, from Ellicott City.
Our conversation quickly turned to Camden Yards… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0304-20120301,0,4207984.story
“It’s the 20th anniversary season of Camden Yards…,” said
Barlow. “You know it’s considered to the ‘the ball park that forever changed
baseball.’ (Now,) It’s the tenth-oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball… and
every ballpark since has been inspired by – or used (design) elements from the
(Camden) Yard(s.)
“We have a number of renovations (planned for Camden Yards)
that we’re excited about…,” continued Ms. Barlow. “Most notably the six
retired-number sculptures…”
According to the Orioles website,
“Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the beautiful baseball-only facility in downtown
Baltimore, became the official home of the Orioles on April 6, 1992.”
After last week’s column, some readers were curious about
where the early Orioles teams played. Before Camden Yards, many of us have fond
memories of attending games in the old Memorial Stadium on 33rd Street.
Memorial Stadium was the home of the American League Orioles
from April 15, 1954 to October 6, 1991. However, according to numerous sources,
including ballparksofbaseball.com, “The Baltimore Orioles of the International
League played the first game at Memorial Stadium on April 20, 1950.”
When the Baltimore Orioles were a part of the “American
Association League,” from1882 to 1889, the team played at a stadium called
“Oriole Park,” which was located at 25th Street and Greenmount
Avenue. Between 1889 and 1950, the team played in a number of locations.
Beginning around 1916 the team played at a wooden stadium, Terrapin
Park at the corner of 29th Street and Greenmount Avenue, until it burned to the
ground on July 3, 1944.
And, for the reader who asked; yes, the former Federal
League Baltimore Terrapins baseball team (1914-1915) was a primary party in the
famous May 29, 1922 Supreme Court decision in the Federal Baseball Club v. National League suit. Justice Oliver
Wendell Holmes, Jr. wrote the majority opinion which determined that baseball
was not subject to the Sherman Antitrust Act… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0304-20120301,0,4207984.story

… "Baseball came to Westminster the year after the end
of the Civil War. Bat-and-ball games had been played since time immemorial, but
modern baseball is descended from the game as played in New York City in the
1840s."
Hershberger records that one of the earliest references to
baseball in Carroll was the "Olympian Base Ball Club (which) was founded
on April 14, 1866."
That may just put Carroll County ahead of Baltimore. A
number of media sources, including VisitBaltimore.org, the website for
Baltimore Convention & Tourism Board, reports the first mention of baseball
in Baltimore came in 1882, "when Harry Vonderhorst sponsored a Baltimore
team in" what was then known as the American Association of baseball
clubs, (1882-1891.)
"In 1894, the (at that time, National League) Baltimore Orioles won their first
professional baseball championship…(In) 1903 the team moved to New York and
eventually became today's NY Yankees." … The current Baltimore Orioles
franchise began playing baseball in 1954 in Memorial Stadium … http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0226-20120222,0,6575174.story
