The annual Halloween parade in Historic Downtown Westminster on October 29th. Registration begins at 6pm on Monroe St. near Dutterer's Park. The parade begins at 7pm via Pennsylvania Avenue to Main Street and ending on Longwell Avenue. This event is coordinated by the American Legion Post #31. Call 410-857-7953 for more information.

Halloween in Sykesville will be celebrated on Sunday, October 31st from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

Halloween will be celebrated on Sunday, October 31st
from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

With Halloween approaching, our children will soon be on our roads trick or treating, some with parental supervision and some without.  Halloween falls on Sunday night.  

With this in mind, I would like to share some preventative measures with you to help make a fun outing a safe one for all. 

·       Give and accept wrapped or packaged candy only

·       Adults should accompany young children

·       Be prepared by carrying a flashlight

·       Stay within the neighborhood and only visit homes you know

·       Watch for traffic

·       Make sure your child can see clearly through his or hers facemask; use cosmetics to create fun or scary faces.

·       Wear light-colored clothing short enough to prevent tripping; add reflective tape to the sides, front and back of costume.

·       Avoid hard plastic or wood props such as daggers or swords; substitute with foam rubber that is soft and flexible.

·       Keep costumed children away from pets.  The pet may not recognize the child and become frightened

·       Examine all candy before allowing your child to consume it        

We want everyone, children and adults alike, to have a safe and happy Halloween.

Parade starts at 7pm

NO Large or heavy trucks, skateboards, in-line skates, or bicycles permitted in the parade NO EXCEPTIONS!!

Halloween: Gist worried about being forgotten, but not quite gone

“Gist worried about being forgotten, but not quite gone” is one of my favorite Halloween stories among many.  I wrote it for the Sunday Eagle, under the working title of “Ghost Stories in Carroll County.”  It was published in the newspaper on October 28th, 2007.

Of the horror stories of Carroll’s yesteryear, none was greater than the very real fear of being buried alive.  In today’s world, society’s collective faith in the modern advances of the medical arts has gone a long way in alleviating the fear of being buried alive; a fear which was rampant in the 1800s.

A few years ago, local historian Jay Graybeal retold an account by Ruth Gist Pickens about the fear of being buried alive held by one of Carroll County’s most prominent citizens in the 1700s, Colonel Joshua Gist.

It seems that Colonel Gist maintained a coffin in a portion of his bedroom for the last years of his life; “into which he would have his personal servant lay him out and then call the family to comment on his appearance.  Each time he would ask them to promise not to bury him until the third day after his death.” …………  http://www.scribd.com/doc/39632160/Halloween-Gist-worried-about-being-forgotten-but-not-quite-gone

Happy Days Are Here Again?

Tuesday evening I joined the Republican faithful gathered in Frederick at The Green Turtle to watch election results. While they were cheering the victory of Randy McClement, mayor-elect of Frederick City, I couldn’t help but think that perhaps the political pendulum crossed the apex and was now swinging the other way. Their way.

The results are in, and the voters have chosen Randy McClement over Jason Judd in the City of Frederick election. Before getting into the specifics, Congratulations are due both candidates for running a strong, civil race. Despite pressures from others, both men campaigned without slinging mud. Let’s hope the county races next year are run with the same decorum and respect.

The Westminster Police Department will be conducting specialized patrols during the weekend of Friday, October 30, 2009 through Sunday, November 1, 2009 due to the expected increase in activities associated with the observance of Halloween.

Patrol officers will concentrate their efforts in residential neighborhoods during the hours that children will be going door to door trick or treating. The primary purpose during this time will be to ensure the safety of the children and motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the neighborhoods during this time. Patrol officers will also be on the lookout for any malicious activity that frequently occurs during Halloween.

Officers assigned to the night shift will be concentrating on the detection of drugged and drunk drivers. Individuals holding Halloween parties are asked to be responsible hosts and ensure that their guests are either provided with a safe way home or are allowed to remain at the residence should they have too much to drink at the party.

In addition to the usual complement of Patrol officers working the evening and night shifts, a specialized team of four officers will be assigned to address issues related to large unruly parties and underage drinking.

Ghost Stories in Carroll County

Of the horror stories of Carroll’s yesteryear, none was greater than the very real fear of being buried alive. In today’s world, society’s collective faith in the modern advances of the medical arts has gone a long way in alleviating the fear of being buried alive; a fear which was rampant in the 1800s.

A few years ago, local historian Jay Graybeal retold an account by Ruth Gist Pickens about the fear of being buried alive held by one of Carroll County’s most prominent citizens in the 1700s, Colonel Joshua Gist.

It seems that Colonel Gist maintained a coffin in a portion of his bedroom for the last years of his life; “into which he would have his personal servant lay him out and then call the family to comment on his appearance. Each time he would ask them to promise not to bury him until the third day after his death.”

Ms. Pickens recounted that Colonel Gist “feared being buried alive because his brother, General Mordecai Gist was thought to be dead in the 1780s” and would have been buried alive were it not for the fact that the family waited three days for his dearest friend, General Nathanael Greene to arrive.

After General Greene arrived, he spent, what he thought would be, some final moments with his old friend; during which “he noticed that General Gist moved one eyelid. General Gist was revived and lived years longer, married the third time, and had another son.”

The May 16, 1891 edition of the Democratic Advocate recounted a similar scare in Sykesville. “The people of Sykesville … were thrown into a state of excitement on Sunday afternoon by the report that Mrs. Lavinia Brown… was not dead.”

There was a concern that her supposed death was really “suspended animation.” After several examinations Mrs. Brown’s husband, Benjamin F. Brown, and family remained unconvinced.

Several more examinations ensued by the undertaker, James R. Weer, Rev. J. D. Thomas, Prof. Trusten Polk, and Drs. D. B. Sprecher and H. C. Shipley before the burial finally took place

Such was the concern over premature burial; the now defunct Democratic Advocate carried a story on December 21, 1901 that a “practical demonstration was given recently in New York of a method of saving the lives of those prematurely buried. The system is the invention of Count Michael de Karnice Karnickio of Russia,” according to Mr. Graybeal.

Count Karnickio's “apparatus consists of a tube …, a box, and a few appliances for signaling. The tube is placed over an aperture in the coffin and the other end of it appears above the surface of the ground where it is surmounted by the box.”

No, I’m not making this up.

“Through the tube passes a rod on the end of which inside the coffin is a ball. The slightest movement of the body in the coffin is communicated to the rod which in turn releases springs. The door of the hermetically sealed box flies open, the bell rings and the signal ball rises above the grave to a height of six feet.”

For those folks who may be a bit jittery about being buried alive, yet would rather utilize today’s technological advances, you may consider being buried with your cell phone.

Just imagine, one day if you happen to awaken in a cramped space and the air is a bit musty, you may very well have been buried alive. However, if you have your cell phone with you – you have options.

Now all the details of the Untimely Burial Cell Phone Alert Safety System or UBCPASS (U-PASS) have not been worked out and that is where you come into the picture.

Parade, trick-or-treating set in Westminster

The annual Halloween Parade in Westminster, hosted by American Legion Post 31, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, along Main Street.

The parade begins at 6 p.m. at Dutterer Family Park on Monroe Street, continues to Pennsylvania Avenue and then down Main Street to Longwell Avenue.

Meanwhile, the Mayor and Common Council have designated the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 31 to be Halloween trick-or-treating night.

Trick-or-treating should be conducted between the hours of dusk and 8 p.m. and restricted to children age 12 and under. Children should be accompanied by parents or adult guardians.

Residents who wish to participate should turn on their outside lights. Children should wear light-colored clothing so as to be more visible, and only visit houses in their neighborhood that have outside lights on.

Motorists are asked to pay special care on the evening of Oct. 31.
