Congratulations on your election President Macri @PresidenteMacri #MacriPresidente

Congratulations on your election President Macri @PresidenteMacri #MacriPresidente

South America Argentina President Mauricio Macri

Dec. 12, 2015

This is too fun, the newly elected president of Argentina, Mr. Mauricio Macri, is now following my Twitter feed - https://twitter.com/kevindayhoff @kevindayhoff.

In the past I have written a number of articles about South American politics; specifically Cuba, Panama, Bolivia; Chile and her president, Michelle Bachelet – a physician who military expert, (yes, read that a second time,) who must be one of the world’s most intriguing players on the world stage; Brazil and Argentina. I just got back from Cuba.

One of the fascinating things about writing about South America, is that you get mail (e-mails) – and sometimes lots of it.

In the past it seems that I may have annoyed some of the followers of the former president of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Or not, maybe it was my imagination. She was president from 2007 to 2015 and the widow of former president Néstor Kirchner…

I am thrilled that President Macri is following me on Twitter. Let’s see what we can do with this, eh?

@PresidenteMacri #MacriPresidente Congratulations on your election Mr. President.

Jubilation and anger as Mauricio Macri becomes Argentina's new president

Published on Dec 11, 2015
Argentina's new president Mauricio Macri has taken up the reigns, heading up a country which is deeply divided.

His swearing-in has brought both his supporters and those of former leader Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner out onto the streets of Buenos Aires.

She snubbed all of the inauguration events, following weeks of bickering.

Minutes after centre-right Macri made a speech calling for national unity, groups representing both sides jeered each other in front of the Government House.

Macri'…

Conservative Mauricio Macri wins Argentina's presidential election promising economic reform

Nov. 23, 2015

Conservative opposition candidate Mauricio Macri has won Argentina's presidential election after promising business-friendly reforms to spur investment in the struggling economy.

Key points:

Mauricio Macri wins more than 52 per cent of the vote, election body says

Conservative president-elect vows economic reforms

Ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli couldn't distance himself from Cristina Fernandez, analyst says

Mr Macri's supporters swarmed to the Obelisk in the heart of Buenos Aires' theatre district for a giant street party as subdued ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli conceded defeat.

Argentina's election body said Mr Macri had 52.1 per cent of votes and Mr Scioli had 47.9 per cent with returns in from 91.5 per cent of polling stations.

"This the beginning of a new era that has to carry us toward the opportunities we need to grow and progress," Mr Macri told supporters at his headquarters.

In a sign of Argentines' weariness with a spluttering economy, rising crime and corruption, Mr Macri had gone into the run-off election with a comfortable lead in opinion polls over Mr Scioli, the candidate of outgoing president Cristina Fernandez.

New York Times: In a Shift , Argentine President Says Prosecutor’s Death Was Not a Suicide - NYTimes.com

Cristina Fernández de KirchnerCreditEnrique Marcarian/Reuters
"BUENOS AIRES — Confronted with a deepening scandal, the president of Argentina shifted position on Thursday, saying that the death of the lead prosecutor investigating the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center was not a suicide as she and other government officials had suggested.

Instead, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner suggested that the prosecutor’s death was part of what she hinted was a sinister plot to defame and destroy her.

The president’s change of position added a major new twist to the suspicious death of the prosecutor, Alberto Nisman, whose body was found in his luxury apartment in Buenos Aires late Sunday with a fatal gunshot wound to the head."

European Central Bank in a fix over Greek debt by Joseph Stiglitz

This article ties-in neatly with The Economist: Argentina’s debt default Gauchos and gadflies http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2012/02/economist-argentinas-debt-default.html I’ve read it several times and gain more insights every time I read it…

A decade after the Latin American country welshed on $81 billion, disgruntled creditors are still chasing their money. The litigation, and Argentina’s defiance in the face of judgments against it, complicate its plans to return to international capital markets.

Argentina’s default, after a severe economic crisis, sparked social unrest and runs on banks. It subsequently presented creditors with a take-it-or-leave-it offer of 35 cents on the dollar. They considered this derisory: previously, delinquent countries had typically paid 50-60 cents. But the government stood firm and roughly three-quarters of the bondholders took part in a debt exchange in 2005. More joined in 2010, bringing the total to 93%... http://www.economist.com/node/21533453

The ECB may be putting the interests of the few banks that have written credit-default swaps before those of Greece, Europe's taxpayers, and creditors

Nothing illustrates better the political crosscurrents, special interests, and shortsighted economics now at play in Europe than the debate over the restructuring of Greece's sovereign debt. Germany insists on a deep restructuring – at least a 50% "haircut" for bondholders – whereas the European Central Bank insists that any debt restructuring must be voluntary.

In the old days – think of the 1980s Latin American debt crisis – one could get creditors, mostly large banks, in a small room, and hammer out a deal, aided by some cajoling, or even arm-twisting, by governments and regulators eager for things to go smoothly. But, with the advent of debt securitisation, creditors have become far more numerous, and include hedge funds and other investors over whom regulators and governments have little sway.

Moreover, "innovation" in financial markets has made it possible for securities owners to be insured, meaning that they have a seat at the table, but no "skin in the game". They do have interests: they want to collect on their insurance, and that means that the restructuring must be a "credit event" – tantamount to a default. The ECB's insistence on "voluntary" restructuring – that is, avoidance of a credit event – has placed the two sides at loggerheads. The irony is that the regulators have allowed the creation of this dysfunctional system… http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/economics-blog/2012/feb/06/european-central-bank-greek-debt

Now that the Super Bowl is over there may be no better time to focus some attention on the continuing Greek tragedy that is unfolding over in the economic Twilight Zone, known as the Eurozone.

There is a growing sense that Americans, somewhat exhausted after a decade of foreign wars and international conflict, have grown increasingly isolationist in their worldview.

That may be a good thing to a certain extent. The United States cannot continue to pay the price of maintaining the planet’s police force.

While other nations concentrate that portion of its gross national product to strengthening its industrial base, quality of life and economy – think Germany – that would otherwise go to defense spending if it were not for the United States, our nation continues to wallow in an economic tar pit.

Just when our nation’s economy cheers up a bit, things threaten to get worse quickly.

As we head for the seclusion of the isolationist, padded panic room, it might be a good idea to take a look over our shoulder and keep an eye on Greece – and Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Italy… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4907
