Westminster Md. Holiday Parade cancelled

Westminster Md. Holiday Parade cancelled

Westminster Maryland Miracle on Main Street Holiday Parade cancelled.

Friday evening, November 23, 2018

The annual Westminster Miracle on Main Street Holiday Parade hosted by City of Westminster Recreation & Parks Department has been cancelled.

The annual tree lighting will still occur at 6 PM in Locust Lane

The Miracle on Main Street parade scheduled for Saturday, November 24th, 2018 in Westminster has been cancelled. Unfortunately due to the worsening forecast we have cancelled the Miracle on Main Street Parade.

There is no rain date for this parade.

The Jingle Bell Run will have a modified run route at 4:55 PM.

The annual tree lighting will still occur at 6 PM in Locust Lane, with a modified ceremony. Right after the tree is lit for the season join us at the Westminster Library for free crafts & games and a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

According to the US National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, “The Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded further east to include most areas west of I-95. Rain will affect the region starting early Sat. Temps will be cold enough for areas west of the I-95 corridor to experience wintry precipitation which may cause travel difficulties.”

The Christmas season has always been a special time in Westminster. For generations; long before our current tradition of an electric light parade right after Thanksgiving, the city came together for a community celebration and a parade called the Christmas Treat…

[…]

Times have changed. The center of town is now considered to be the park at Locust Lane. Government does not dare use the words "Christmas" or "Hanukkah." And technology, not fruit, is at the top of the Christmas list for most folks. In my childhood years in Westminster in the 1950s, our favorite fruit was not an "Apple" computer. A gift of oranges was considered to be particularly special…

Schedule set for annual Westminster Fire Dept Santa detail

Santa Claus is coming to Westminster on a Westminster fire department fire engine.

By Kevin Dayhoff

12/06/2010

In a greatly anticipated holiday treat, courtesy of the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Company No.1, Santa Claus will once again be roaming Westminster area neighborhoods on a fire engine, beginning this coming Monday, December 13.

Santa will be leaving the fire station each evening 6 p.m., December 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th.  A rain date has also been set for December 17.

According to a press release on the Westminster fire department’s website, http://www.westminstervfd.org/, the department will not post a neighborhood schedule this year.  In the past, fires and other emergencies have caused the schedule to be changed too often.

“Just listen for the sirens and you will see jolly ole Saint Nick.  WFD promises that we will make every effort to bring Santa down your street.”

Santa has also been scheduled to visit the fire station for the department’s annual Christmas breakfast.  The breakfast will begin at 6 a.m. and continue throughout the morning on Saturday December 18, 2010.  Santa will arrive at 8 a.m., according to Lt. Josh Evans, a spokesperson in Mr. Claus’ office.

He is scheduled to appear on one of Westminster's antique fire trucks, and “wants to have his picture taken with you,” according to the department’s website.

For more information visit the website or call the station at 410-848-1800.

November 30, 1945: No Xmas Decorations Or Treat For Children in Westminster

No Xmas Decorations Or Treat For Children Here

Democratic Advocate, November 30, 1945.

Announcement was made by Mayor Joseph L. Mathias that the municipal decorations for the coming Christmas season will be limited to the decorating of the tree at "The Forks".

Due to the lack of available manpower and the scarcity of required materials, the Mayor said the extensive decorating plan, which prevailed prior to the war, would not be resumed this year.

Mayor Mathias also announced that the City could not offer the Christmas treat to the children of the community this year because of the limitations to the supply of candies and fruits.
