Baltimore ‘Francis Scott Key’ bridge collapses

Baltimore ‘Francis Scott Key’ bridge collapses after a large container ship collided with it at 1:27 a.m. Tuesday morning

by Kevin Dayhoff 3:42 a.m. March 26, 2024

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday morning, March 26, 2024, after it was struck by a large ship.

WTOP news is reporting that “it was a container ship flying under a Singapore flag that crashed into the bridge. The vessel, called “Dali,” was headed through Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, as its final destination, according to Marine Traffic and Vessel Finder maps and data.”

All traffic is being detoured, said Maryland Transportation Authority and it’s unclear if anyone was injured. Although multiple media reports indicate there was traffic on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

“The 1.6-mile, 4-lane bridge extends over the Patapsco River,” reports CNN. (It) serves as the outermost crossing of the Baltimore harbor and an essential link of Interstate-695, or the Baltimore Beltway.

“Its namesake, Francis Scott Key, is believed to have sat near the site of the bridge as he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814, inspiring him to write the words of the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’”

According to a Facebook story by the “Thomas Stone National Historic Site,” “On March 23, 1977, the four-lane Francis Scott Key Bridge opened to traffic and is named for the author of the Star-Spangled Banner. The 1.6-mile bridge extended across the Baltimore Harbor and connected Sollers Point in Baltimore County with Hawkins Point in Baltimore City. This was also the final link in establishing the 52-mile Baltimore Beltway (Interstate 695.)

"By the early 1960s, the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (Interstate 895), the first crossing of Baltimore's Harbor, had reached its traffic capacity, and motorists encountered heavy congestion and delays almost daily during rush hours. The State Roads Commission, predecessor of the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA,) concluded there was a need for a second harbor crossing.

"Construction on the Francis Scott Key Bridge began in 1972. Including its connecting approaches, the bridge project was 10.9 miles in length. Other structures along the thruway include a .64-mile dual-span drawbridge over Curtis Creek and two .74-mile parallel bridge structures that carry traffic over Bear Creek, near Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point plant."

This is a developing story – check back for updates.

1971 Westminster High School graduate John Huber, 70, died August 23, 2023

1971 Westminster High School graduate John Huber, 70, died August 23, 2023

Obituary for John W. Huber Jr. April 22, 1953 - August 23, 2023

John W. Huber, Jr., age 70 of Milton, DE, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer, on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at Delaware Hospice Center. He was born on April 22, 1953, in Olney, MD, son of Eleanor Huber of Westminster, MD and the late John W. Huber, Sr.

John graduated from Westminster High School, Class of 1971. He was a brick and stone mason by trade and dedicated many years to his career. An avid outdoorsman, John loved to hunt and fish. His green thumb was evidenced by his beautiful gardens and meticulously kept yard. John had a true passion for studying Civil War history and spent many years participating in several reenactments. He was a talented artist who was always sketching, and one could always find his drawings laying around, left like surprise gifts. He was a lover of all animals and truly enjoyed the many creatures in his care. John had an incomparable sense of humor; he relished playing jokes and pranks and had a way of teasing that was always good natured. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, Daddy John, and friend who will live on forever in our hearts and memories.

John was preceded in death by his father, John W. Huber, Sr.; and his brother, Walter Huber. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Barbara Marsh Huber of Milton, DE; his children: Zachary Ward (Lisa) of Manchester, MD, and Lauren Shahan (Lee) of Hartly, DE; his stepchildren: Billy Hocker (Annie) of Rehoboth Beach, DE and Beth Wright (Jevon) of Gainesville, VA; his grandchildren: Kylie, Jaxson, Will, Jaylen, and Jace; his sister, Pamela Huber Schaeffer (Noah) of Westminster, MD; his brother, Bruce Huber (Teresa) of Westminster, MD; his niece, Heather; and many other nieces, nephews, extended family, and close friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant, 205 Frederick Rd, Thurmont, MD

The restaurant is well lit and fun - nicely decorated and obviously well-maintained. The folks that work there obviously  like the restaurant. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The food was great with great prices, and a large parking lot – right off Rte 15. We look forward to returning soon.

Earlier Caroline had played in a Westminster Municipal Band concert in the Thurmont Memorial Park, just off 116 East Main Street, Thurmont, MD 21788, at the Thurmont Trolley Park. The band concert was great – and enjoyed by many folks from around town who came out on a beautiful Sunday evening to enjoy the music.

We really liked the 1.3-acre park. It was well maintained and picturesque. It is obvious that Thurmont loves the park – and that folks enjoy it. The park comes complete with a bubbling stream that runs through the park – not far from a memorial pavilion that honors local folks who have served in the military and fought in a nation’s wars to maintain the freedoms and quality of life we enjoy. It was a great evening, and we look forward to returning to Thurmont.

The Thurmont Trolley Park. We were intrigued about the Trolley Trail Park. According to the Thurmont website, “The Thurmont Trolley Trail is a .8 mile trail installed over the former trolley tracks that serviced Thurmont in the 1900’s.

“The Town of Thurmont also acquired and displays one of the trolley cars that was once utilized in Thurmont’s history. The building that was once used to house all the electrical components that operated the trolley sits at the beginning of the trail on East Main Street.

“The Town of Thurmont and the Thurmont Lions Club has installed murals on the building depicting the history of Thurmont...

“From 1908 to 1954, Thurmont was the "end of the line" for the trolley system that traveled from Frederick to Thurmont. During its hay day in the 1920's, the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway (H &F) carried 3.8 million people per year.

“However, with great strides in the world of transportation, the demands for the trolley dwindled and the H&F made its final trip to Thurmont in 1954 and the tracks were removed. The existing trail begins at the historical trolley car and promotes a glimpse at Thurmont’s historical transportation services. Today, the trail is heavily used by residents and visitors for hiking, jogging, biking, and enjoying nature.”

It was a great evening, and we look forward to returning to Thurmont. https://goo.gl/maps/o1SsDQQoxCfWduqf9
