Whatever happened to the Navy midshipman who gave President Bush a bear hug?

If you want a good example of what a difference community newspapers make, read: VIRGINIA MILITARY NEWS - “Whatever happened to the Navy midshipman who gave President Bush a bear hug? Discipline. Then redemption.” By Brock Vergakis, Staff writer, Nov 21, 2018

“Bobby Rashad Jones couldn't help himself. He was the midshipman with the lowest grade-point average in the Naval Academy Class of 2001 – known as the anchor – and was overwhelmed with joy to receive his commission after spending years on academic probation…

“The former linebacker grabbed Bush's hand, pulled him in and hugged the commander-in-chief. And not just any hug; a bear hug that briefly lifted Bush off the ground as part of what Jones would later describe as an "out-of-body experience." Christina Lamb - The Sunday Times: Bitter Seals tell of killing 'Bert' Laden

Bitter Seals tell of killing 'Bert' Laden

OSAMA BIN LADEN was killed within 90 seconds of the US Navy Seals landing in his compound and not after a protracted gun battle, according to the first account by the men who carried out the raid. The operation was so clinical that only 12 bullets were fired.
The Seals have spoken out because they were angered at the version given by politicians, which they see as portraying them as cold-blooded murderers on a “kill mission”. They were also shocked that President Barack Obama announced bin Laden's death on television the same evening, rendering useless much of the intelligence they had seized.
Chuck Pfarrer, a former commander of Seal Team 6, which conducted the operation, has interviewed many of those who took part for a book, Seal Target Geronimo, to be published in the US this week.
The Seals' own accounts differ from the White House version, which gave the impression that bin Laden was killed at the end of the operation rather than in its opening seconds. Pfarrer insists bin Laden would have been captured had he surrendered.
Free trial
“There isn't a politician in the world who could resist trying to take credit for getting bin Laden but it devalued the 'intel' and gave time for every other al-Qa'ida leader to scurry to another bolthole,” said Pfarrer. “The men who did this and their valorous act deserve better. It's a pretty shabby way to treat these guys.”

ATLANTIC OCEAN - A unique moment took place the evening of July 14, when USS Enterprise and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower crossed paths in the Atlantic Ocean off the East Coast.

Enterprise, on its way home from a regularly-scheduled seven-month deployment to the Sixth Fleet and Fifth Fleet areas of responsibility, had just picked up its crew’s family members from Mayport, Fl., for a Tiger Cruise. Eisenhower was off the Southeastern Coast conducting the largest carrier qualification in recent memory  for squadrons around the country.

The common link between the two ships was Capt. Dee L. Mewbourne, Enterprise’s commanding officer (CO), who was returning home from his third deployment as CO of a carrier in three years. Mewbourne had previously commanded Eisenhower on its two deployments in 2009 and 2010.

The ships spent some time alongside each other, and photos were snapped from helicopters in the air and Sailors and their families on both ships...

Catch and Release

The US Navy has implemented a new catch and release program in its war on terrorism.  This new program targets smaller terrorist cells and fringe groups for the purposes of intelligence gathering.

Once these small groups are captured and interrogated, they are then released as seen in this Navy photo.

PHILADELPHIA — The USS Olympia, a one-of-a-kind steel cruiser that returned home to a hero's welcome after a history-changing victory in the Spanish-American War, is a proud veteran fighting what may be its final battle.
Time and tides are conspiring to condemn the weathered old warrior to a fate two wars failed to inflict. Without a major refurbishment to its aging steel skin, the Olympia either will sink at its moorings on the Delaware River, be sold for scrap, or be scuttled for an artificial reef just off Cape May, N.J., about 90 miles south… http://dailyme.com/story/2010090600000544/olympia-2-war-naval-veteran-battles-survival.html
