"The cost of a drink isn't what it used to be for a North Charleston man who was slapped with a $525 fine for refilling his 89-cent drink and now faces federal charges.

On-site construction worker Chris Lewis told WCSC News he didn't know refills at the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston weren't free.

A hospital spokesperson called it a "theft of government property," the station reported." Read more:

New Virginia law protects farmers from meddling local officials - by By Bonner Cohen, Ph. D

Fauquier County officials forced family farmer Martha Boneta to cease selling produce from her own 64-acre farm, and so she took action and had Commonwealth law changed...

Fauquier County Virginia officials threatened a family farmer, Martha Boneta with $5,000 per-day fines for hosting a birthday party for eight 10-year-old girls without a permit...

By Bonner Cohen, Ph. D. March 31, 2014

In a hard-fought and stunning victory for family farmers and property rights throughout the Commonwealth, Gov. Terry McAuliffe on March 5 signed into law legislation solidifying Virginia’s status as a right-to-farm state by limiting local officials’ ability to interfere with normal agricultural operations.

The governor’s signature marks the latest chapter in a swirling controversy that attracted nationwide attention in 2012 when the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors forced family farmer Martha Boneta to cease selling produce from her own 64-acre farm. No longer allowed to sell the vegetables she had harvested, Boneta donated the food to local charities lest it go to waste.

Fauquier County officials threatened Boneta with $5,000 per-day fines for hosting a birthday party for eight 10-year-old girls without a permit, and advertising pumpkin carvings. Seeing the county’s action against Boneta as a brazen effort to drive her off her land, Virginians from all walks of life rallied to her defense.  Supporters gathered in Warrenton, the county seat, for a peaceful “pitchfork protest” to vent their anger over what an out-of-control local government had done to a law-abiding citizen....

By contrast, opponents of the bill, including well-funded environmental organizations and power-hungry county governments – both determined to preserve strict land-use controls – reportedly employed lobbyists to kill the bill.  In the end, highly motivated citizens triumphed over highly paid lobbyists...

Stopping government abuses that threaten our economy

Speaker Boehner filmed a brief video for this week’s Speaker Alert previewing upcoming legislation to stop government abuses that threaten our economy. Watch him here:
Two of the bills highlighted by Speaker Boehner – one to get the IRS out of ObamaCare and another to rein in federal red tape – were the subject of this week’s Republican address by Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA).  “You deserve a government that works for you, not against you,” says Leader CantorWatch him here:

Ineptocracy

Ineptocracy

June 17, 2013

The 2014 elections will bring many new faces to new seats and offices throughout the state. It is developing as the perfect storm collision of certain office holders being termed-out of office, others have been in office way too long and change is in the wind. Not to be overlooked is much of the voting public has developed recession fatigue and the public remains restless with a non-specific general malaise brought about as a result of the ineptocracy system of government that pervades the land.

For those who are not aware, ineptocracy is “a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.”

A big thanks and a Hat Tip to the former commissioner’s wife…..

Lance Armstrong and King Sisyphus by Kevin E. Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/cctpxp2

Lance Armstrong and King Sisyphus by Kevin E. Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/cctpxp2

August 29, 2012

Last Thursday, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency decided, without a single credible shred of evidence, that since professional cyclist Lance Armstrong did not prove himself to be innocent, he is guilty and could not have been successful in his storied career without the use of drugs.

Before Mr. Armstrong retired from professional cycling in February 2010, he had passed approximately 500 drug tests in his long, celebrated, and distinguished athletic career. It is believed that there has never-ever been a single positive test…

[…]

“There’s something very much of the feel of a witch hunt to this. If Armstrong was doping, then by God take away his awards and give him a medal for being the smartest damn athlete on the planet.”

… we live in an era where the purpose of government is to criminalize the successful. Whether you are successful in business, art, professional sports – or whatever, the basic tenant of government is that you simply must be guilty of something. The purpose of bureaucracy is to prove it.

Whether you are guilty or not is unimportant. For the government, what is critical is that you be accused. That’s all that is necessary. The media will take care of the rest – by suggestion, innuendo, and nefarious association.

Your job is to endeavor to prove that you are innocent. It is a task that makes the myth of Sisyphus look easy.

You remember Sisyphus. There are many interpretations and versions of the story – including my favorite, “The Myth of Sisyphus” by Albert Camus… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5314

165 Million Americans Are Dependents of the State: Is Tyranny Next?

By Bill Wilson

Bill Wilson is the President of Americans for Limited Government.

Is America descending into a dependency state, where the majority uses its voting power to demand government services from taxpayers?

New research from Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee Jeff Sessions (R-AL) reveals that this reality may already be here, with more than 107 million Americans on some form of means-tested government welfare.

Add to that 46 million seniors collecting Medicare (subtracting out about 10 million on Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid, and other senior-eligible programs already included in Sessions' means-tested chart) and 22 million government employees at the federal, state, and local level — and suddenly, over 165 million people, a clear majority of the 308 million Americans counted by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010, are at least partially dependents of the state.

Since President Obama took office in 2009, eligibility for Medicaid, food stamps, the earned income tax credit, the making work pay tax credit, and unemployment benefits has increased by roughly 10 million. To add insult to injury, Obama then unilaterally dismantled the work requirements that were the heart of the 1990's welfare reform via an arbitrary executive order.

But it's even worse than that. In fact, most voting-age Americans do not pay income taxes — approximately 50.6 percent.

That includes 53.91 million Americans who pay nothing in income taxes, and another 64.7 million who get refunds in excess of what was owed. That's 118.61 million out of 234.6 million Americans 18 years and older, based on data compiled by the Joint Committee on Taxation and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Washington Times: 'Little guy' wins high court fight with EPA

Washington Times: 'Little guy' wins high court fight with EPA

CNN by: Bill Mears Wednesday, March 21, 2012

In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court gave an Idaho couple another chance Wednesday to challenge a government ruling barring construction of their dream house on property the Environmental Protection Agency deemed to be a "wetland." Photo Credit: AP http://times247.com/articles/little-guy-wins-high-court-fight-with-epa

The Supreme Court gave an Idaho couple another chance Wednesday to challenge a government ruling barring construction of their "dream house," an important property rights defeat for the Obama administration.

The justices unanimously ruled Chantell and Mike Sackett can appeal a compliance order that said wetlands on their residential lot were improperly filled with rocks and dirt. A building permit was then revoked. ...

"The Supreme Court has come to our rescue," Mike Sackett said just after the decision was issued, "and reminded the EPA — and everyone — that this is still America, and Americans still have rights under the Constitution."
