U.S. to file complaint over Russian fighter intercept | National News - WBAL Home

(CNN) —After a Russian fighter jet intercepted a U.S. reconnaissance plane in an "unsafe and unprofessional manner" earlier this week, the United States is complaining to Moscow about the incident.

On Tuesday, a U.S. RC-135U was flying over the Baltic Sea when it was intercepted by a Russian SU-27 Flanker. The Pentagon said the incident occurred in international airspace north of Poland.

New York Times: U.S. Flies B-52s Through China’s Expanded Air Defense Zone

BREAKING NEWS Tuesday, November 26, 2013 12:47 PM EST

Two long-range American bombers have conducted what Pentagon officials described Tuesday as a routine training mission through international air space recently claimed by China as its “air defense identification zone.”

The Chinese government said Saturday that it has the right to identify, monitor and possibly take military action against aircraft that enter the area, which includes sea and islands also claimed by Japan. The claim threatens to escalate an already tense dispute over some of the maritime territory.

American officials said the pair of B-52s carried out a mission that had been planned long in advance of the Chinese announcement this past weekend, and that the United States military would continue to assert its right to fly through what it regards as international air space.

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler - Marylanders for Joe Getty January 18, 2012

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin and I attended the funeral yesterday for Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler. In our official capacities, we offered condolences from all Maryland citizens to the family for their loss.

Today, at the end of the Senate legislative session, I moved that the Senate adjourn in memory of Airman 1st Class Seidler as a tribute to this Maryland Fallen Hero.

Seidler was 24-years-old and lived in Westminster where he graduated from Westminster High School in 2006.

When he joined the Air Force, he was accepted into the elite EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit. He was well-aware of the dangers he faced - the EOD personnel comprise only 1% of the Air Force but suffer 25% of the casualties.

On January 5, 2012, Seidler was part of a military convey of 27 vehicles engaged in hostile combat operations in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Earlier that day, his unit had defused two IEDs (improvised explosive devices) so that the convoy could continue its maneuvers. Tragically, his truck was hit by a third IED that killed Seidler and two other airmen.

The article by Kevin Dayhoff of the Carroll Eagle does an excellent job of capturing the outpouring of emotion and the honor and dignity given to this local hero during the funeral at Sol Levinson's & Bros. in Reisterstown. (click here)

Please keep the family of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler in your prayers.

TALLIL AIR BASE, Iraq -- Some might call a bomb squad living in a bunker ironic; the 332nd Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron’s explosive ordnance disposal flight airmen here call it practical.

The EOD airmen are on alert 24-hours a day, seven days a week, and respond to an average of 25 to 30 calls each week… http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/airforce/a/afeodiraq.htm

Airman from Westminster is killed in Afghanistan By Steve Kilar, The Baltimore Sun

Airman from Westminster is killed in Afghanistan

January 07, 2012|By Steve Kilar, The Baltimore Sun

A 24-year-old airman from Westminster was killed when an improvised explosive device hit his vehicle in Afghanistan, the Defense Department said Saturday.

Airman 1st Class Matthew R. Seidler died Thursday in the attack, which killed two other airmen. They were patrolling in Helmand, a southwestern province that remains a Taliban stronghold.

"When he joined the Air Force, he blossomed. He became himself," said a cousin, Kalyn Masek, who last communicated with Seidler on Tuesday, his birthday. "I was really, really proud of him and the man that he'd become."

Seidler, an explosive ordnance disposal technician, entered active duty in November 2009. He was assigned to the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.

"He loved what he did" for the military, said Masek, who was surprised when Seidler told her that he was joining the Air Force. Being involved in the disarmament of explosives fed his intellect, she said, and excited him in a way that prior false starts in his professional life had not.

Seidler graduated from Westminster Senior High School in 2006. He took classes for a year in business administration at Stevenson University and then started in a multimedia design program at Carroll Community College before deciding to join the military.

"He was extremely smart," said longtime friend Bryan Vana, who'd known Seidler since middle school. Vana said … http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-01-07/news/bs-md-ca-airman-killed-20120107_1_seidler-explosive-ordnance-disposal-technician-airman

Westminster, Md. - The Pentagon announced earlier today that a Westminster airman was one of three servicemembers who died supporting Operation Enduring Freedom on Jan. 5 in Shir ghazi, Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Airman 1st Class Matthew R. Seidler, 24, of Westminster, Md had been assigned to the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.

Also killed in the attack were Senior Airman Bryan R. Bell, 23, of Erie, Pa., who had been assigned to the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Barksdale Air Force Base, La. and Tech. Sgt. Matthew S. Schwartz, 34, of Traverse City, Mich. from the 90th Civil Engineer Squadron, FE Warren Air Force Base, Wyo.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “The Erie Times News reported that Airman Bell joined the U.S. Air Force in 2006 and served a tour of duty in Iraq. As an explosive-ordnance disposal technician, his main job was to clear routes with two other servicemen in an armored vehicle, his father Rick Bell of Harborcreek told the newspaper.

“Airman Bell last visited his dad over the summer, before his deployment to Afghanistan, and said he was still excited about his dangerous job, which gained notoriety with the Academy Award-winning movie ‘The Hurt Locker,’ which won the Academy Award for best picture in 2009.”

The website, Fallen Heroes Afghanistan - http://oefkia.blogspot.com - reports, “Sr. Airman Bell, a bomb-disposal technician serving with the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, was a volunteer firefighter. He graduated from Harbor Creek High School in 2006 and joined the Air Force the same year. He leaves behind his father, mother, wife and sister.” (Photo courtesy: http://oefkia.blogspot.com)

Fallen heroes Afghanistan reports, “Sgt. Schwartz was a bomb-disposal technician serving with the 90th Civil Engineer Squadron, FE Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming. His family told local news that this was his sixth combat mission and that he had also served in Iraq. He had served in the US Air Force for 12 years. Sgt. Schwartz leaves his wife, Jenny, and three daughters.” (Photo courtesy: http://oefkia.blogspot.com)

Seidler was one of eight of NATO’s US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers who have died in a series of recent attacks in southern and eastern Afghanistan, say military officials.

In accordance with ISAF policy, no further details were released. According to iCasualties.org, at least 566 NATO troops were killed in Afghanistan in 2011; including 418 from the US and 46 from the United Kingdom.

An Afghanistan International Security Assistance Force casualty report from Kabul, Afghanistan on Thursday, January 5, said, “Three International Security Assistance Force service members died following an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan today.

“It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities…”

In related news, in an “ISAF Joint Command morning operational update - January 6, 2012… South: In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, a coalition security force discovered a cache of improvised explosive device materials during a routine patrol yesterday. The security force confiscated 50 various IED components from the scene to be destroyed at a later date.

An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. The leader constructed roadside bombs and trained insurgent fighters for attacks against coalition forces. Two additional suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

“East: In Sabari district, Khost province, an Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani leader during an operation today. The leader procured weapons for insurgent fighters and conducted roadside bomb attacks. The security force seized weapons, bomb making materials and detained multiple insurgents during the operation.”

The news that a Westminster area service member had been killed in Afghanistan had started circulating on Friday. However it is usually best to wait to report upon such information until the Pentagon releases the information – after the Department of Defense has notified all family members and appropriate personnel…

Approximately 140,000 NATO military personnel – including about 100,000 from the United States - are currently fighting in the ten-year war against the Taliban-led insurgency against the NATO-backed government of President Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan.

No further details on the deaths of, or funeral arrangements for Seidler, Bell or Schwartz are available at the moment.

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett Flies with MD Civil Air Patrol on Mission over the Chesapeake Bay

Congressman on patrol over the Chesapeake

By Capt. Ron Laurenzo, Group I, Maryland Wing

5/11/2007-Frederick, MD-U.S. Representative Roscoe Bartlett, his Chief of Staff Harold Otis, and Mrs. Bartlett got a great view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and a whole lot more in a Civil Air Patrol glass cockpit Cessna 182 recently on a crystal clear spring day.

The veteran congressman's first flight with the CAP gave him a taste of the kind of search and rescue and homeland security missions flown every day by volunteer air crews from the Air Force's civilian auxiliary. Group I Commander, Major Dave Lawlor, flew the Congressman and his party.

"There aren't many bargains with government, but this is one of them," Bartlett said at Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick, Md., after the flight. CAP's light aircraft search for lost hikers, boats, downed aircraft, and observe nuclear power plants and other critical infrastructure, all for a fraction of what it would cost the military to fly those missions.

"This money is really leveraged," said Bartlett, a senior member of the House Science Committee and ranking member of the Armed Service's Seapower and Expeditionary Forces Subcommittee. "We buy a plane and everything else pretty much is free."

20070201 Pelosi Out of touch

Debuting the new “Pelosi Air Force.” Becoming Speaker of the House – important. Getting your own F-8 – millions. Becoming Speaker of the House and getting your own air force - priceless. www.kevindayhoff.net Feb. 1, 2007

Pelosi Out of touch

Good morning Mrs. Pelosi – it’s time to go to work.

February 1st, 2007

H/t: D9000

Re: “Speaker pursues military flights” By Rowan Scarborough THE WASHINGTON TIMES, February 1, 2007.

When Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi says that she wants the troops out of Iraq, it has recently become clearer that what she really wants is the Air Force out of the combat zone so that it can become her personal air taxi.

Oh, it is so important to be important…

A colleague of mine, who is a veteran of the war in Iraq, recently sent me an e-mail, which reflects much of what my ear to the ground, is hearing from military folks about the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. (Also see “label”: “Pelosi - Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi”… The Pending Pelosian Malthusian Prerogative” … or here…)

It is not pretty. As far as many folks who are straining to find parallels with the Vietnam War, many of us ardent supporters of the military are having terrible flashbacks about the administration of President William J. Clinton and his First Lady, now New York Senator, Hillary Clinton.

Spin it anyway you want to, the Clinton Administration had a horrific affect on the military. The Clintons and their liberal Democratic administration abhorred the military. Careers were truncated or in many instances, totally trashed. Instead of pursuing the necessary defense of our great nation and the freedoms we so enjoy; they pursued Class Warfare. Their personal gain and social agenda was at our expense and it greatly endangered all of us…

Now comes Speaker Pelosi - - and Senator Clinton is running for the oval office and many of us who keenly remember the days of the liberal Democratic control of Congress and the Clinton years are all having terrible nightmares.

Anyway, my Veteran colleague called to my attention an article in the Washington Times: http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20070201-122225-1157r.htm, with the following forward:

“I guess Mrs. Pelosi assumes the air force has nothing better to do than be her personal chauffer. Just goes to show how out of touch some of our democrats are when it comes to the military. Hope all is well.”

For more information about my colleague – read my Tentacle column from December 20, 2006: “An Uneasy Truce” – “Christmas is within a week and my thoughts and prayers go out to the men and women in uniform who are deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq…”

For more of my previous thoughts about the Speaker of the House, read my January 10, 2007 Tentacle column: "A Message to Speaker Pelosi"“Last Wednesday our nation witnessed an historic first when California Rep. Nancy Pelosi was elected to be the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives…”

For my current thoughts on the Iraq War, read my January 17, 2007 Tentacle column, "NUTS!" – “Last Thursday President George W. Bush addressed the nation with his long awaited "New Way Forward in Iraq…”

To which a reader from Frederick, Mr. Tansey said it best in his response:

“Kevin : Right on-we have no choice but to continue the fight in Iraq. American people better wake up to a real threat. Why don't you consider reducing your article and send it to an editor - Washington (T)imes, Frederick News-(P)ost, etc? I write a letter on occasions. Have one in right now on the same subject. Two of my brothers were severely wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. I am an army veteran of 24 years. Enjoyed your article. Keep it up.”

Perhaps the best quote on Speaker Pelosi came from the late New York Post Washington D.C. Bureau Chief Deborah Orin-Eilbeck, (who passed away this past Saturday, January 27th, 2007,) “Forget 'The Devil Wears Prada' - the hot show in Washington is 'The Shrew Adores Armani.' In just a few short days, House Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi has turned into a caricature of the shrill, petty woman boss.”

For more on the dynamics of Armani suits and the Speaker of the House, read my November 15, 2006 Tentacle column, “A Marine Corps Birthday Present” -. “The United States Marine Corps has had significant participation in every American armed conflict since November 10, 1775; and its role as a rapid deployment force to fully defend our nation against terrorist threats and to effectuate foreign policy has never been more important than today…”

For more on Deborah Orin-Eilbeck read my Tentacle column on her from this past Wednesday, January 31, 2007, “Who was Deborah Orin-Eilbeck? – “Last Saturday, the New York Post's Washington bureau chief, Deborah Orin-Eilbeck, passed away. Published accounts noted that she died at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of stomach cancer.”

(Hopefully another version – another column in memorial tribute to Ms. Orin-Eilbeck will appear in the Washington Examiner.)

Which all leads us to the piece in the Washington Times, called to our attention by my colleague; “Speaker pursues military flights” By Rowan Scarborough THE WASHINGTON TIMES, February 1, 2007.

The office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pressing the Bush administration for routine access to military aircraft for domestic flights, such as trips back to her San Francisco district, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

The sources, who include those in Congress and in the administration, said the Democrat is seeking regular military flights not only for herself and her staff, but also for relatives and for other members of the California delegation. A knowledgeable source called the request "carte blanche for an aircraft any time."

"They are pressing the point of her succession and that the [Department of Defense] needs to play ball with the speaker's needs," one source said. The request originally went to the Pentagon, which then asked the White House to weigh in. (My emphasis…)

Well I’m certainly glad that the military exists for the benefit of Speaker Pelosi. Perhaps in their spare time the military can also defend the country and defend the right of the Speaker of the House to not support the very organization that stands between her, you and me – and folks who wish to do us harm and deny us the very rights to which have become accustomed.

The Speaker of the House has, no doubt, enormous rights and privileges. Many of us are waiting, with baited breath, for the Speaker to understand that with those rights and privileges come responsibilities.

Liberal ideology and empty political rhetoric might be nice for a Hollywood cocktail party adorned in an elegant Armani suit, but the next morning, the real world awaits and it sure isn’t elegant.

Good morning Mrs. Pelosi – it is time to go to work.

Kevin Dayhoff
