University of Delaware students skip spring break to volunteer in Dominican Republic

March 3, 2014

Instead of taking a "typical" spring break trip this year ten University of Delaware students will be working with underprivileged children at a local literacy and learning center in Batey Libertad, a small community in the Dominican Republic.

One of the students is my niece, Alexander Handzo, and she will be joining nine other University of Delaware students on this week-long alternative break sponsored by the UD Honors Program and University of Delaware's Alternative Breaks.

In a recent fundraising letter I received from Ms. Handzo, she said, “Our goal is to support Yspaniola, an education-focused non-profit  based in the Dominican Republic that works to increase access to high quality education  for marginalized communities  by supporting universal literacy and higher education.

“On our trip, we will visit two major cities, Santiago and Santo Domingo, and spend time living with Dominican families in Batey Libertad. In addition to working with children, we will learn about community development in Batey Libertad and have discussions about human rights issues, education, migration, and international affairs.

“We will also contribute to Yspaniola's supplies and education programs. The Batey Libertad Learning Center provides high quality educational programming for children in Batey Libertad between the ages of 5 and 14; the curriculum focuses on building reading and writing skills while encouraging critical thinking and supporting healthy emotional development.

“The Scholarship Program allows promising students from Batey Libertad to attend college in Santiago. Without the scholarship, these students would not have the opportunity to further their education, so Yspaniola's program changes their lives.

“Since last fall I've been preparing for this trip and I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to make a difference in a new environment. To make our visit as fruitful and beneficial to the community as possible, we are asking for you to make any donation you can to support our mission.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

More information about donating may be found at a fundraising website:

BENEFITING: YSPANIOLA INCORPORATED

EVENT DATE: MAR 29, 2014

This spring break, 10 University of Delaware Honors students will be traveling to the Dominican Republic to work with Yspaniola, an education-based non-profit working towards the promotion of social justice and education in Batey Libertad. Help support us in our efforts to raise money for Yspaniola to aid their Learning Center, provide university scholarships to promising students, and work together towards social equality. The video and pictures to the left provide a glimpse of how your donations can help the Batey Libertad community.

To donate to this cause, please go to the web site: http://www.crowdrise.com/udhonorstobateylibertad

If you would prefer to write a check, please address it to:

Yspaniola att. Jon DiMaio

North Haven, CT 06473

Please make the check out to "Yspaniola" and include "University of Delaware" and the student, Alexander Handzo, you are supporting in the memo line.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity! We are so excited about this opportunity to make a difference in a new environment.

Ryan Edward Handzo, of Phoenix, graduates from Georgia Tech

Celebrating Atlanta and Georgia Tech

LABELS:

May 11, 2011 by Kevin Dayhoff

Ryan Edward Handzo, of Phoenix, graduated with the 2011 class of Georgia Institute of Technology at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, on Sunday May 8.

Handzo, a 2007 graduate of Dulaney High School in Timonium, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering, with high honors.

Georgia Tech’s main campus is located in downtown Atlanta.  It was founded in 1885, in the depths of the reconstruction era following the American Civil War.

The keynote address for the 2,300 graduates at the 239th commencement ceremonies was delivered by the fourth chief executive officer of Wal-Mart, and Georgia Institute of Technology graduate Michael Terry Duke, 61.

“Since joining Wal-Mart in 1995, Duke has led the logistics, distribution and administration divisions, as well as Wal-Mart U.S…” according to the Georgia Tech newsroom.

Duke challenged the spring 2011 graduating class of Georgia Tech to follow three key ingredients to leadership and use three guideposts as they embark upon their lives and careers.

Duke, who graduated from Georgia Tech in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, remarked that “you can be the most learned… and the best speaker…  But you cannot be effective as a leader unless you are trusted…”

He continued that the three key ingredients to leadership are caring, performance and trust and he emphasized the importance of living one’s life as best as you can every single day in an effort to make a difference and contribute to the greater good…

Mr. Duke reflected that the guideposts to making a difference in the world are integrity, live with purpose, and set high expectations of oneself – and then exceed them.

“Do what’s right every single day,” said Mr. Duke as he held forth that one of the most important classes he took at Georgia Tech was a course in business ethics.

“It’s not just about the money.  It’s about doing good,” remarked Mr. Duke.  “Never sell yourself short.  Set the bar higher, then higher…”

Handzo is the son of Tammy and Rob Handzo, and the grandson of Louise Wright Miller of Westminster.

Last Sunday I had the privilege of witnessing 2,300 proud graduates of Georgia Tech receive their diplomas in the midst of approximately 10,000 of their closest family and fans at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta.

For me the four-hour ceremony was worth it and the sage and well-prepared remarks by Mr. Duke were almost secondary to the pride I felt as I peered over a sea of black caps searching for my nephew, who received his undergraduate degree.

The opportunity to attend Georgia Tech’s 239th commencement ceremonies was certainly collateralized by being able to tour the campus of the proud institute that was founded in 1885, in the depths of Reconstruction following the Civil War.

It also gave me an opportunity to visit Atlanta, arguably the proud capitol of The South, and to gain a greater insight into the storied traditions of Georgia Tech, one of our nation’s best science, math, and engineering institutions of higher learning.

As for Mr. Duke’s background and address, the Georgia Tech news room pointed-out: “Since joining Walmart in 1995, [Mr.] Duke has led the logistics, distribution and administration divisions as well as Walmart U.S…”

Mr. Duke, who graduated from Georgia Tech in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, said that “you can be the most learned… and the best speaker… but you cannot be effective as a leader unless you are trusted…” …  http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4394

Great race wrap-up and commentary by Lance P. Martin :

Great Moments in Marathon History: Kiawah Island 2008 Sunday, December 07, 2008

Kiawah Island is a runner's marathon. At 2,000 or so, it's neither too big or too small. Pre-race could not be easier. They open the East Beach Conference Center and runners lounge in the halls and meeting rooms until the start, which is right outside the front doors. Article storage is self-serve, you just put your name on your bag and toss it into an unsupervised tent. This is awfully easy for runners, and I doubt that theft is an issue.
