Katherine Heerbrandt: Debate on proposed alcohol tax increase turns personal

Michael Kurtianyk, Frederick County Board of County Commissioners, on the issues
The MOST important issue facing Frederick County now and for the foreseeable future is the budget. We need to continue to shrink the size of our government AND increase revenue through broadening the commercial tax base by being business-friendly. In addition to raising revenue in this manner, we must also look for ways to cut expenses. These cuts must partner with all entities, State/County/BoE and Local. My responsibility as a County Commissioner will be to ensure that citizens continue to receive high quality essential services, such as law enforcement, fire and rescue and education.
Job retention, job expansion and new job recruitment are essential for economic development. If every company in the County added just ONE job per year, we’d be adding over 8,000 jobs in the County annually!
I am proud to be married to a wonderful Frederick County Public Schools teacher. The teachers do a great job teaching our children, who represent our future.

‘Friends' emerge in Frederick growth battle
Avery adds ‘Inc.' to ‘Friends of Frederick County' in bid to support development
http://www.gazette.net/stories/08122010/frednew154724_32535.php
A new fight is brewing in the politics of growth in Frederick County, this time revolving around how one defines "friend."
Adam Avery of Frederick, host of 930 AM WFMD's "Senior Talk Radio" and an emerging outspoken figure in local politics, announced this week that he is president and owner of a new organization called "Friends of Frederick County Inc."
Avery's new group is intended to be the opposite of "Friends of Frederick County," which emerged in the 2006 election to fight what it considers to be urban sprawl and poorly planned development.
Instead of fighting development, however, Avery said his group will encourage it and highlight the benefits growth brings.
"I found [Friends of Frederick County] to be poorly organized and poorly funded," Avery said. "And I wanted to bring a positive light to the men and women who risk their [financial] lives to bring businesses to Frederick County."
But Friends of Frederick County is not pleased with Avery's move... http://www.gazette.net/stories/08122010/frednew154724_32535.php

http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/opinion/display_comments.htm?StoryID=108035#postComments Developing a more sustainable, competitive job market is my top priority as a candidate for the state Senate. Gainful employment guarantees the revenue stream that supports schools, infrastructure and other essential services. Our area has been spared many of the most severe effects of the economic downturn that have befallen other areas of the country. Nevertheless, we still have too many citizens who are unemployed, underemployed or concerned about their job security. We must determine the best approaches for creating a robust economic recovery following the deepest recession in decades. We are fortunate to have a wide diversity of businesses and industries. Our leading employer, Fort Detrick, and its strategic partners are poised for growth. Between Fort Detrick and the National Cancer Institute an additional 2,500 new jobs are expected during the next five years. In addition to the bioscience and biotechnology positions that will be available through these two entities and their strategic partners, we can expect growth in other emerging technologies as well... http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/opinion/display_comments.htm?StoryID=108035#postComments |

“This column may come as a shock to some, as it will be about Those People! In fact, it will not only be about Those People, but will actually promote a couple of Those People! I speak, of course, about Democrats.
Like it or not, they exist and live among us. Why they chose that particular ideology is indiscernible, but they have made their choice. And what’s more, they constitute a large portion of our voting public. To that end, there are two running for different offices that have piqued interest – Brad Young running for Frederick County Board of Education and Michael Kurtianyk running for Frederick Board of

State delegate candidate Scott Rolle is registered to vote at a house being used as a model home.
Rolle, a Republican, is living in an apartment temporarily while the new house is being finished, he said.
In order to qualify as a candidate for state delegate, Rolle must be a resident of the district he seeks to represent for six months prior to the election. The apartment is located outside District 3A, the seat he is running for.
