Los Angeles Times: Firm's extended vehicle warranty offer breaks down under scrutiny

Los Angeles Times: Firm's extended vehicle warranty offer breaks down under scrutiny

A letter that appears to be from an auto dealer is actually from an out-of-state company selling an expensive contract with a sweeping loophole.

March 12, 2013|David Lazarus Los Angeles Times

It was the sort of letter designed to get attention. "Final attempt to notify," it said on the outside.

Within, an official-looking "product warranty expiration notice" said that my Toyota's service contract "is expiring or has expired." It provided a number to call "to extend coverage."

This was troubling because when I purchased my "certified pre-owned" car from a dealer in 2011, I paid $1,700 for a seven-year, 100,000-mile extended warranty. Now it was expiring?

The answer, of course, was no. And the racket I'm about to run down is yet another reminder that you need to examine closely anything that even remotely looks like a financial warning. Chances are, it's a sales pitch for something you don't want and don't need.

Most homeowners have received things like this in the mail relating to their home. Maybe it's called mortgage protection. Maybe it's extended coverage for your gas line or chimney.

This was the first time I've seen one relating to a vehicle. And the format of the letter was particularly insidious, making it seem to be from my dealer and indicating that if I didn't act right away, I could be on the hook for any breakdowns.

My first call was to the Toyota dealer that sold me the car….

Offer of an extended factory warranty from American Automotive Service Solutions

Dec. 1, 2015

Why are such companies allowed to remain in business?

And why do these letters only seem to come to Toyota owners? Anecdotally, a quick search of the web indicates that this seemingly misleading and sensational letter – or postcard only seems to come to Toyota owners? In our personal experience, we only get these offers for our Toyota – not our Ford truck…

Other than that possible explanation; that perhaps the scammers get the information from the Toyota; is it possible that the Maryland Dept. of Motor Vehicles sells our private information and addresses?

From the Better Business Bureau – one of several negative customer reviews… “When I opened my mailbox, there was a letter that said "FINAL NOTICE" regarding my newly purchased vehicle. It had the make and model of the vehicle, then "Official Business" and "Penalty For Private Use" in the window of the envelope…” - See more at: http://www.bbb.org/stlouis/business-reviews/auto-service-contract-companies/american-automotive-service-solutions-in-wentzville-mo-310288545/customer-reviews?cacheit=y#sthash.ZWwJPaqn.dpuf

Baltimore Crime Beat May 6 - July 12, 2015: About 130 Baltimore Police officers injured during Baltimore riots

Old Harley Davidson police motorcycle and mobile booking center.

Actually I do not know the date of the picture. I saw it on Pinterest and it really captured my imagination. I am working on a column about the early history of the Maryland State Police - and in particular, the early line of duty deaths. One of which occurred in Westminster at the intersection of Washington Road and Colonial Avenue. Officer Clinton R. Rhodes was killed in a motorcycle mishap in January 28, 1931.

I also found this:

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, law enforcement officials and prosecutors have created an around-the-clock "war room" to address the spike in violent crime that has racked Baltimore since the death of Freddie Gray, they said Sunday.

A new digest of articles in the Baltimore Sun on the recent unrest and other related events

A new digest of articles in the Baltimore Sun on the recent unrest and other related events

Just trying to catch-up after being away for a while.... May 4, 2015 at 6 a.m....

After more than a week of angry protests over the death of Freddie Gray, marred at times by violence and rioting, hundreds rejoiced and sang outside City Hall on Sunday.

Mary Jackson was watching CNN when the rioting broke out in West Baltimore last Monday, and she couldn't take her eyes off the screen.

Dr. Ben Carson, the celebrated pediatric neurosurgeon who spent his career at Johns Hopkins Hospital before becoming a darling of conservative voters, said Sunday he will seek the Republican nomination for president next year.

A message of hope was delivered by Baltimore elected officials and clergy at Southern Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, nearly a week after the Mary Harvin Transformation Center (a project of the church) and senior apartments were destroyed by a fire nearby during riots last Monday.

Mark Dantzler arrived home from a party early Sunday morning to find his neighborhood blocked off and his street saturated with blue police lights.
Baltimore began to move beyond unrest Sunday when Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake lifted a citywide curfew, the Maryland National Guard began withdrawing its forces and shoppers returned to Mondawmin Mall, which had been shuttered after looting.

Baltimore could be set to host a blockbuster sequel with Kentucky Derby champion American Pharoah and top rivals Firing Line and Dortmund all pointed toward the May 16 Preakness.

Pushing back against criticism of his own policing strategies in Baltimore, former Gov. Martin O'Malley said the tensions that erupted into riots last week would be central to his presidential campaign if he decides to run.

Baltimore City officials estimate the 39 hours an employee spent watching pornography on the job during a two-week period equated to about $1,166 in salary. They fired him in January after monitoring and documenting the employee's porn viewing.

One man is dead after two separate overnight shootings Saturday, Baltimore police said.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings said Sunday he was "comfortable" with State's Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby's decision to charge six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray.

Gov. Larry Hogan attended mass at a Catholic church in the Sandtown-Winchester community Sunday, part of a "day of prayer and peace" he had declared in the wake of a tense week that saw looting and violence following the death of Freddie Gray.

As the 10 p.m. curfew went into effect Saturday night, police detained one man at Pennsylvania and North avenues, the site of a riot and looting earlier this week. The handcuffed man had been pepper-sprayed and police were pouring water into the man's eyes to try to ease the effects of the spray....

A group of about 50 mostly white protesters stood on a corner in Hampden on Saturday just as the citywide 10 p.m. curfew went into effect because, they said, they knew they'd be treated differently than black protesters in poorer parts of the city.

In a fourth-floor conference room at Baltimore police headquarters, two training officers in blue T-shirts and blue pants lowered themselves onto the carpeted floor to demonstrate the leg hold officers used to restrain Freddie Gray the day he was arrested — and sustained a fatal spine injury.

It was part dance party, and part angry cry for justice.

James Henderson grabbed his daughter Kya's tiny hand and reminded his youngest, Kendall, to hold on to him as the family joined a crowd of about 100 Saturday on a march to City Hall.

Unrest in Baltimore put on display the widely different leadership styles that Gov. Larry Hogan and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake brought to a crisis that could come to define their administrations.

As more than a dozen pharmacies remained closed after fires and looting in Baltimore, city health officials on Saturday urged people who can't get their medicines to call 311 for help.

After riots overtook West Baltimore on Monday, a hashtag began to appear on Twitter and other social media — #BALTIMORELOOTCREW — linking together posts that depicted pilfered prescription drugs and demolished store shelves.

Tonight's Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao bout may be the fight of the century, but for some Baltimore bar and club owners, it's just another way the city's ongoing curfew is costing them and their employees money.

As arson investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives dug through the charred rubble of a West Baltimore pawn shop Saturday, the bureau put out a call for citizen-captured videos of fires that erupted during Monday's riots. Anyone with fire videos can upload...

Baltimore City's top prosecutor, State's Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby, charged all six officers who had been suspended in connection with Freddie Gray's death. The highest charge, second-degree depraved heart murder, went to the driver of the van.

Baltimore police arrested at least 53 people during peaceful protests Friday, the day charges were brought against the six officers involved in the arrest of Freddie Gray.

A popular fundraising website has disallowed contributions for the Baltimore officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray.

The obstacles the Orioles have faced through the first four weeks of the season – several untimely injuries, an inconsistent pitching staff and this week's forced scheduling twist – pales in comparison to what has been going on in Baltimore over the past seven days.

Two men were arrested amid the ongoing unrest in Baltimore on Tuesday night after stealing a Maryland Transit Administration mobility van that police then tracked through GPS, a MTA spokesman confirmed.

A 49-year-old Highlandtown corner store employee was fatally shot at his business on Friday morning, one of two shootings reported in Southeast Baltimore.

Amid a cacophony of people shouting and car horns honking, Baltimoreans pulled each other into close hugs and joyful handshakes Friday as word spread that State's Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby was charging six police officers involved in the arrest of Freddie Gray.

All six police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray were released from the Central Booking and Intake Center downtown Friday night after posting bail, court records show.

NEWS RELEASE
MARYLAND STATE POLICE HEADQUARTERS: PIKESVILLE, MD 21208

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 2, 2013

http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2013/09/carroll-co-murder-suspect-in-custody.html

(MT. AIRY, MD) – A Carroll County man is in Maryland State Police custody and will be charged in connection with the murder of his father that occurred this afternoon at the home the two shared.

The victim is identified as Michael J. Pine, 63, of the 700-block of Bridlewreath Way, Mt. Airy, Md.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  His body will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death

The suspect is identified as Joseph W. Pine, 31, the son of the victim, who lived with him at the same address.
After consultation with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office, State Police homicide investigators will be obtaining charging documents for the suspect tonight for the crimes of first and second degree murder.  Additional charges are possible, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Joseph Pine has been taken to the Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster for medical and psychological evaluations.  Charges will be served on him either late tonight or tomorrow, depending on the disposition at the hospital.  He will remain under State Police guard until he is charged, when his custody will be turned over to Carroll County Detention Center deputies.

Shortly before 3:00 p.m. today, Maryland State Police at the Westminster Barrack received a 911 call from a neighbor reporting a disturbance between the victim and suspect outside their residence.  A state trooper assigned to the Mt. Airy Resident Trooper Program responded and arrived at the Pine residence minutes later.

As he arrived, the trooper observed a man, later identified as the suspect, standing outside his home.  Joseph Pine surrendered peacefully to the trooper and was immediately taken into custody.

Backup troopers and deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene.  Troopers observed the victim, later identified as Michael Pine, lying on the front porch of the residence next door.  He had sustained obvious trauma to his upper torso.  Emergency medical personnel who responded determined the victim was deceased.
The scene was secured by uniform troopers and investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to conduct the investigation, with assistance from State Police investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division.  Crime scene technicians from the State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded and will be processing the scene.

State Police investigators applied for and obtained a search warrant for the crime scene.  Investigators and crime scene technicians will be processing the scene for evidence throughout the night, pursuant to the search warrant.  No information is available at this time regarding the recovery of the weapon or weapons used in the crime.

The preliminary investigation indicates some type of altercation occurred between the victim and suspect inside their home.  Evidence indicates the suspect assaulted the victim, possibly with one or more knives.  The victim ran outside his home, pursued by the suspect, and was found next door.

No police record of calls at the home involving any type of domestic problems has been found.  Investigators believe the father and son lived together in the residence.  No one else lived there and no one else was in the home when the altercation occurred today.

The investigation is continuing.

Tragedy Strikes at Heart of America http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5730 Kevin E. Dayhoff April 17, 2013

The cheers of joy and excitement quickly turned to screams of terror on Monday at 2:50 in the afternoon when an act of senseless horror shattered the 117th running of the Boston Marathon, arguable the world’s oldest and most prestigious endurance foot race.

The marathon is traditionally held on Patriots Day in Boston and the holiday had blossomed into a beautiful spring day. The Massachusetts state holiday “commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution in 1775.”

The Boston Marathon brings-out approximately 500,000 spectators and visitors to the city for what can be described as Christmas and New Year’s Eve all rolled into one.

The bombs shattered the celebrations of the runners, families, and spectators- and once again, shook us to our core. The heinous act served as an unwelcome reminder that no one is safe anywhere in a world where senseless acts of violence are perpetrated upon the innocent to promote a political or ideological agenda… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5730
