The Tentacle: “Who brought the canards to this party?” Farrell Keough

Who brought the canards to this party?” Farrell Keough July 21, 2009

Many of us have known people who married the person involved in the break up of their marriage. We have also seen this situation in which one or the other in this new marriage cheats again. It is a difficult situation, but one with which a person has to wonder, why would you trust someone who has a known history of cheating or breaking vows?

Trust is a rare commodity and one which must not be broken as it is difficult, if not impossible, to regain. This situation seems to be playing out in the Maryland Republican Party. Dr. James Pelura III, the current chairman, is under significant fire from leaders within the party. This is neither a defense nor a condemnation of Dr. Pelura – that chain of events is taking place throughout newspaper articles, emails, and letters.

[…]

The first publicized warning of events to come took place on
July 8, 2009. In that news story it was disclosed that Dr. Pelura had fired an executive director and that was the only “fact” known…

[…]

Following the initial press release, further
sources spoke to other outlets. Perusing these hyperlinked newspaper articles, one will notice that a few names continue to appear. This is an odd situation for a group of elected officials whose interest should be in promotion of the party, not in its attenuation.

Maryland General Assembly Republicans File Taxpayer Protection Act

Bill will require 3/5ths Majority in General Assembly to Raise Taxes

Annapolis –This week, Senator Andy Harris (R-7) and Delegate Steve Schuh (R-31), with joint support from the Republican Caucuses in the State Senate and House of Delegates, introduced the "Taxpayer Protection Act". The bill numbers are SB 747 and HB 684.

This exciting piece of legislation would require a 60% vote in each chamber to raise existing taxes or create new ones. It is important to note that the damaging tax increases passed during the 2007 Special Session did not receive such a majority. Had this legislation been in place, Maryland's economy would be better off today.

"Once again, the Republicans in the Maryland General Assembly have shown their dedication and commitment to the hard-working taxpayers of Maryland,” stated Chairman Pelura. “Governor O’Malley is dangerously relying on bailout money from the federal government to balance his budget. When that dries up, he’ll be coming back to the taxpayers to demand more from them.”

Pelura continued, "I urge all Marylanders to call their state senators and delegates and tell them to support this legislation to stop Governor O'Malley and his Democrats allies in the General Assembly from taking any more of our hard-earned dollars."

Dixon and City Democrats Get Raises While Contemplating Layoffs

ANNAPOLIS—On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Mayor Sheila Dixon, City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, City Comptroller Joan Pratt and the 13 other City Council members had pay raises approved by the Baltimore City Board of Estimates, which all three of them sit on. The move was done without identifying the titles or names of those receiving a raise. This comes at a time when Mayor Dixon has not ruled out layoffs for city workers and revoked cost of living raises for middle managers.

“Once again, this is an example of Maryland Democrat leaders operating under a different set of rules than the rest of us,” said MDGOP Chairman Jim Pelura. “These raises amount to $26,250 which is a substantial amount of money to anyone who is not a big-government politician. Mayor Dixon is talking about laying off lower level city workers. I certainly think that $26,250 might save at least one job. Do as I say, not as I do is becoming a common stance in Baltimore City and the state of Maryland.”

“We need new leadership for Maryland that puts taxpayers, small businesses, and working families first. There are several leaders who have volunteered to take part in the furloughs for state employees. Mayor Dixon, Council President Rawlings-Blake, and Comptroller Pratt should follow suit and reject these pay raises,” concluded Pelura.
