Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal arson fighting canine passes away

“Inez,” Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal arson fighting canine passes away Friday, September 18, 2015 after a sudden illness with her partner/handler, Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Howard Ewing and his wife Michelle at her side.

September 19, 2015

It is with deep regret that State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci announces the death of “Inez”, she was previously one of the three K-9 accelerant detection teams the Office of the State Fire Marshal operates. She passed away in the late evening hours yesterday, Friday, September 18, 2015 after a sudden illness. Inez passed away peacefully with her partner/handler, Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Howard Ewing and his wife Michelle at her side. Inez should be remembered for all of her hard work and dedication to the field of arson detection and fire prevention. She has been recognized over the years for her outstanding work including her and Deputy Ewing being awarded 2007 Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year. As a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) trained dog she also traveled far and wide on a variety of cases. It is estimated Inez worked over 500 cases in her career.

Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Ewing and K-9 partner Inez were an exceptional tool used against arson in the State of Maryland. She was trained at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) canine training facility in Front Royal, Virginia. Inez was a member of ATF’s Accelerant Detection Canine (ADC) Class #50. Inez successfully completed six weeks of “imprintation” training, as well as five weeks of “handler and dog” training. Canines have proven to be an invaluable tool in assisting arson investigators determining if flammable liquids were used to start a fire. Inez was trained to find ignitable liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, etc. She graduated in 2005 and retired April 25, 2014.

Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Ewing is a fifteen year veteran of the Office of the State Fire Marshal. He has been assigned to the Northeast Region, consisting of Carroll, Harford and Cecil counties for 14 of those years and was previously assigned to the Lower Shore Region.

“During times like this, no words can possibly express the sorrow we all feel in the loss of our beloved friend, partner and co-worker. We ask, however, as a fitting tribute that we recall those fond memories she brought to us and reflect on the many accomplishments she achieved during her life time” stated State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci

How to identify a Meth Lab

How to identify a Meth Lab

I have been approached by several people lately wanting to know how to identify a Meth Lab.

Here are pictures of four Labs. I think it's pretty obvious which one is the Meth Lab. I hope this helps. Let me know if I can be of any further service in this matter.

STATEMENT FROM FIRST LADY KATIE O’MALLEY REGARDING THE PASSING OF THEIR FAMILY GOLDEN RETRIEVER LADY

STATEMENT FROM FIRST LADY KATIE O’MALLEY REGARDING THE PASSING OF THEIR FAMILY GOLDEN RETRIEVER LADY

ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 3, 2010) – First Lady Katie O’Malley today issued the following statement following the passing of the O’Malley family Golden Retriever, Lady. Lady was 13 years old and she was euthanized on Friday, May 14, 2010. The decision to euthanize Lady was made in consultation with the family veterinarian who had treated Lady for over 3 years.

”A few weeks ago, we had to make a very difficult decision, and euthanized our family Golden Retriever, Lady. My children and Lady grew up together – she was a part of our family for over 10 years – and we are very sad to lose her.”

“When we first got Lady, we adopted her from a woman who had health issues. Her kids were older and she wanted Lady to be around kids that would enjoy playing with her. My kids loved her instantly – she was very gentle with them – they would lay on her and watch TV. They loved her and she loved them.”

“When she was younger, every Sunday, Lady would run 10 miles with me at Loch Raven. She loved to chase squirrels and jump in the dam.”

“And as she got older, she got really attached to Martin and would get very sad when he left the house. When he returned, even when her hips got bad, she would go crazy jumping and barking. She liked sleeping at the side of our bed right next to Martin. He used to sing songs to her and she loved it.”

“Lady O’Malley will be missed dearly.”

The biggest mystery of the Obama White House's first 100 days has been revealed: The first puppy -- the one that the Washington press corps has been yelping about for months -- is a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog given to Malia and Sasha as a gift by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. The little guy's name? Bo.

Dog attacks horses, fatally injures one

There are many aspects of this sad story that are outrageous. Pick our own: The frequency of pit bulls involved in vicious attacks; or the apparent lack of responsibility on the part of the dog owner; and/or the apparent lack of consequences for the dog’s owner…

Pit bull's owner previously fined for unsecured animal

www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/harford/bal-md.ha.pitbull10may10,0,1398426.story

By Sun Reporter Mary Gail Hare May 10, 2008 baltimoresun.com

A young male pit bull attacked several horses pastured at a northern Harford County farm Wednesday, injuring one so severely that it was put down. Another horse might not survive its injuries and a third has nearly 50 stitches on its face, officials said.

Harford County animal control officials ordered the dog destroyed yesterday.

"Based on information from witnesses and past history, this dog was considered potentially dangerous and had to be destroyed for the safety of this neighborhood," said Pamela Arney, Harford's animal control officer.

The dog was often seen running loose in the Forest Hill area near the Grier Nursery Road farm. Twice since March, Jonathan Russo, the dog's owner and the farm's neighbor, had been fined $60 for not securing the animal. Russo, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, received another $95 fine Thursday.

[…]

The dog grabbed a 6-year-old Welsh pony by the nose and hung on, despite the horse's efforts to shake it off. It took 45 stitches to close the pony's bite wounds. The dog then chased a 2-year-old Chincoteague pony and tore at its left hind leg so deeply that its survival remains in question. A 350-pound yearling sustained a fatal injury when the dog grabbed its foreleg and pulled it down. The deep bites exposed joints and tendons on the Welsh pony cross and its leg was broken.

[…]

"I know its owner has rights, but along with that comes responsibility," Klein said. "This dog was unpredictable and vicious."

Wilson, the horses' owner, credited Klein with saving the remaining animals. She has mounting veterinary bills, already in excess of $1,500 and has lost a horse worth about $7,000, she said. As of yesterday, Wilson said that Russo had not contacted her.

20080407 Dog for sale

Hat Tip: CJ

I received this is an e-mail and I guess since it’s Monday all day today; it made me laugh.

Even if you don't own a dog at present, you'll appreciate the efforts of this owner to sell her dog.

Read her sales pitch below...

Dog For Sale

Free to good home.

Excellent guard dog.

Owner cannot afford to feed him anymore, as there are no more thieves, murderers, or molesters left in the neighborhood for him to eat.

Most of them knew him as 'Holy Sh*t.'

20080327 Maryland General Assembly: HB134 Transporting Pets (and wives) in trucks

Maryland General Assembly: HB134 Transporting Pets (and wives) in trucks

Hat Tip: Mrs. Owl

Earlier today Mrs. Owl emailed me a PDF copy of “News and Views You can Use,” distributed by Equiery. I cannot find the newsletter on the Equiery web site

Mrs. Owl wrote “One of several silly aspects of legislation I'm sure,” as she called to my attention commentary on HB134…

_____

Upon reading the newsletter I found the column of which Mrs. Owl was referring on page one: “Maryland General Assembly Session: Opened like a lamb, now roaring like a lion,” by Nancy Hill. She calls to our attention “HB134 - Vehicle laws, Transporting pets in trucks or trailers.”

Ms. Hill writes, “What is quirky about this bill is that ‘people’ over the age of sixteen are allowed by state law to ride in the back of an open truck. As one Senator said, If this bill passes, I'd have to put the dog in the front with me and my wife in the back of the truck. […]”

Snip

I looked up HOUSE BILL 134 (File Code: Vehicle Laws - Rules of the Road

Prior Year Introduction As: HB 132/97 – CGM) and sure enough the synopsis of the bill reads:

“Prohibiting a person from transporting pets in or on a truck or trailer on a highway unless the truck or trailer is enclosed on the sides and the top in a manner that safely prevents the pet from falling, jumping, or otherwise exiting the truck or trailer or unless the pet is confined by a device designed to safely prevent the pet from falling, jumping, or otherwise exiting the truck or trailer; providing that a violation of the Act is not considered a moving violation for specified purposes; defining "pet"; etc.”

The bill was introduced by: Delegate Kevin Kelly, District 1B; Delegate Kathleen M. Dumais, District 15; Delegate Susan K. McComas, District 35B; Delegate Christopher B. Shank, District 2B; and Delegate Michael D. Smigiel, Sr., District 36

And by the way – it passed the House on third reader on March 20, 2008 (127-7)

To sure, a quick search on the internet indicates that a number of state and local governments throughout the nation have such dog tethering laws on the books…

Hey, I’m just as sappy about pets, animals, and dogs as the next person…

Nevertheless, considering the economy; the dynamic that Maryland is currently engaged in driving folks and businesses out of the state with a new and improved version of tax-hell; and last, but not least, are the recent statistics that Maryland is one of the most dangerous states in the union - - is protecting dogs while they ride in a truck what we really need our legislators to be doing these days.

I’m just asking?

20070213 Thai Cuisine in Key West Florida

Thai Cuisine in Key West Florida

February 13th, 2007

For dinner this evening we ate at a Thai restaurant, “Thai Cuisine,” at the corner of Greene and Ann Streets.

Just as we sat down at our table, the Westminster, Maryland acting director of planning and public works, Jeff Glass called.

The picture of the old Key West City Hall was the view I had from my seat as I chatted with Mr. Glass at several minutes past 7 PM Tuesday evening, February 13th, 2007.

Of course in Key West, the outside is blurred with the inside - - and what is inside is outside and what is outside is inside. We had a table that was under-roof, however, it was as much outside as it was inside.

Gee, that sounds like a keen observation of the “Math Potatoes,” Pi, Algebra (Al), Geometry (Geo) and Isosceles.

Mr. Glass was the focus of my last column in the Westminster Eagle – last Wednesday, February 7th, 2007: “Westminster is great, even if it does get your goat .”

In Key West, as I chatted with Mr. Glass, the temperature was in the 80s and it was simply a beautiful evening. In Westminster, it was well below zero and they were in the middle of a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

I had called earlier to how the guys in the Street Department were making out. They have been putting an incredible amount of hours in the last several weeks. As much as I feel guilty about being in Key West while the folks in the Street Department are fighting with frozen equipment, slippery and treacherous roads, long hours and the cold - - I have come to simply hate the cold, snow and ice of winter and I am very happy to be in Key West.

The Westminster Street Department is the focus of my column in the Westminster Eagle that will be coming out tomorrow, Wednesday, February 14th, 2007.

This is a great group of professionals that are a key part of why we have such a high quality of life in Westminster. It is my view that they don’t get enough credit.

Meanwhile, our dinner at the Thai restaurant was exquisite. I had a large selection of sushi. The service was prompt and courteous and as much as everything in Key West is expensive, at least I felt that we got value from what we spent.

The doggie with the sunglasses was a hoot and I couldn’t resist taking the dinner guest’s picture. Chickens, cats, and dogs are frequent dinner guests in many of the restaurants in Key West Just part of the quirky charm.

Kevin
