Speeders, your grace period is coming to an end.

Speed cameras were installed on the Interstate 695 inner loop between the exits for US 1/Belair Road and Philadelphia Road earlier in the month.

The speed limit is 55 mph, according to Safe Zones, which operates the speed camera program in partnership with Maryland State Police, the State Highway Administration, and Maryland Transportation Authority.

Stories worth talking about tonight:

Maryland’s interstate highways are clogged, and most residents in the state are trapped on those busy roads every day, giving us the dubious honor of second-most congested interstates in the country.

The new report by TRIP, a Washington, DC-based national transportation organization, says 75 percent of Maryland’s urban Interstate highways are congested during peak hours, the second-highest rate in the nation.

But police will maintain camera at Nursery Road, where violations are high

The City of Westminster this week pulled the plug on a pair of red light cameras at one of the county's busiest intersections — at routes 140 and 97 — saying the cameras had, by and large, done their job in helping reduce accidents and red light runners.

"You do what you say you're going to do," said Maj. Ron Stevens of the Westminster Police Department regarding the removal of the cameras, which was approved by the Westminster Common Council on Monday.

"We said all along that the cameras were needed because of safety issues," Stevens said. "They've definitely worked — people are much more aware of the dangers of the intersection."

But the department will continue to operate another red light camera a block away at Route 97 and Nursery Road, based on data that shows continued high rates of violations on that stretch of road.

It's the second time that Westminster has reduced its use of red light cameras since it first installed five of the devices in spring 2010.

Baltimore Sun rips off Patch.com story on KO Public Affairs astroturfing?

Since then, WBAL.com (and WBAL radio) along with various blogs (including Inside Charm City) reported on the story by Bryan Sears and gave credit to him for the scoop.
On Monday, Baltimore Sun reporter Julie Scharper even gave credit to Patch for the story in a tweet on her personal Twitter account:
Great reporting from @TowsonPatch about faux grass roots activism for speed cameras.
Tonight, approximately 48 hours after the original story broke, a story on BaltimoreSun.com by Raven Hill went live. This article has no mention of Patch as the original news source or Sears as the reporter who did all the initial legwork to break this story... http://insidecharmcity.com/2011/02/08/baltimore-sun-rips-off-patch-com-story-on-ko-public-affairs-astroturfing/

Lutherville-Timonium PatchDAILY NEWSLETTER

1. County announces is has decided to exercise a one-year option for speed cameras even as the council is going to vote tomorrow to expand the program. This means it will be at least a year before the county would rebid. ACS has already received 81 cents of every dollar the county has collected in speed camera citations.  http://patch.com/A-dQ2T

2. Police Chief Says Public Has a Need for Speed ... Cameras

Audio: Chief Jim Johnson discusses speed cameras during his confirmation hearing earlier this month.

The idea to remove the 15 unit cap on speed cameras in the county was a mere twinkle in Councilman Tom Quirks eye two weeks ago, when Police Chief Jim Johnson appeared before the County Council for his confirmation hearing.
Johnson, in response to Quirk's question about the effectiveness of speed cameras, told the council the program has been very successful... http://catonsville.patch.com/articles/police-chief-says-public-has-a-need-for-speed-cameras#c

Kevin Kamenetz, shown here taking the oath of office on Dec 6, his family beside him, is working to close down his law office but may still have to represent some clients with civil cases, according to a spokesman.
