Life and Death in the Qandil Mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan

Life and Death in the Qandil Mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan by Gerald Paoli Wednesday 20 May 2009

Posted for my friends who know Iraqi Kurdistan, the PKK, PJAK, the Pesmerge, and the Asaish. You know who you are... Do not comment here - send me an e-mail or a Facebook message... And be safe.

Gerald Paoli, Truthout:

"Historically, seasonal bombings have been the norm in the northernmost region of Kurdistan. Bombings became a predictable part of an annual rhythm of life. But villagers adjusted to the anticipated attacks and continued to live in the manner dictated by their traditions and customs. In December 2007, George Bush and Turkish Prime Minister Recip Tayyip Erdogan met to discuss strategies for 'dealing' with the PKK. Since then, the bombing have been more intense and regular."

Sulimanaya, Iraqi Kurdistan - The first Zarawa internally displaced persons (IDP) camp was in a valley in the Qandil Mountains. It wasn't home, but it was situated next to a cool stream and was close to the eight villages of the 132 families, who had fled violence rained down on them by Turkey and Iran. Now, they live in the new Zarawa IDP camp built by the United Nation's High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Turkey has attempted to purchase both armed and surveillance drones from Israel for use in border operations. However, Turkey's government stated on May 19, 2009, that it might cancel a 2005 contract to purchase ten drones from Israel because of delayed delivery. It's also worth noting that Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan sternly criticized Israel's 22-day Operation Cast Lead assaults against Gaza, begun on December 22, 2008.

Another reason to not mow the yard

Reasons to not mow the yard ...

Mower sparks fire that destroys house [multimedia] By Gina Gallucci-White News-Post Staff Originally published in the Frederick News-Post April 30, 2009

Combustible materials left too close to a warm yard tractor ignited and caused a fire that destroyed a house Wednesday afternoon, according to the Division of Fire and Rescue Services.

Deputy Fire Marshal Ed Ruck estimated damage to the house at 5702 Catoctin View Court and its contents at $400,000.

[…]

The house had to be evacuated twice because the fire compromised the structure and the floor was starting to collapse, Ruck said. Several tankers had to be called because there are no hydrants in the area.

Members of the American Red Cross were called to the scene to assist the residents, he said.

Carroll County Times letter to the editor: Disaster can strike at any time by Joseph Ensor, Finksburg

Carroll County Times letter to the editor: Disaster can strike at any time by Joseph Ensor, Finksburg

September 7, 2008

Carroll County Times Editor:

Disaster can strike at any time. It can come in the form of a house fire in the middle of the night, a loved one who suffers a heart attack or a power outage that leaves a family in the cold. In just the past two months, Carroll County Red Cross volunteers have responded to seven fires, bringing aid to those who were put out of their homes. While we can't control what happens, we can control how we prepare for and respond to emergencies.

September is National Preparedness Month, and the American Red Cross of Central Maryland wants Carroll County residents to take steps to be Red Cross Ready. The best part is it's easy to do.

Make a disaster preparedness kit with a few basic supplies in case you have to evacuate your home for up to three days. Next, make a plan about where to meet your family in the event that phone and other communication lines are down. Also, be informed about the types of disasters that can strike where you live, including home fires, terrorism and severe weather. Finally, get trained in First Aid and CPR.

If you've been putting off getting prepared, now is the time to do something about it. We've even created a free online education module at the Get Prepared section of our Web site www.red
cross-cmd.org, to help you out. Together, we can make Carroll County a safer place to live, work and play.

Joseph Ensor, Finksburg

The writer is the chairman of the Carroll County District of American Red Cross of Central Maryland.

20070808 Johnson and Johnson sues Red Cross over use of Red Cross emblem

J&J (NYSE: JNJ) Sues Red Cross Over Use of Red Cross Emblem

National Headquarters

2025 E Street, N.W.

Washington, DC 20006

www.redcross.org

WASHINGTON, Wednesday, August 08, 2007 — Today, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) filed a lawsuit against the American Red Cross and four of its licensing partners for “unlawful conduct” related to the nonprofit's use of the Red Cross emblem.

Specifically, J&J demands that the Red Cross:

Stop the Red Cross and its licensing partners from using the Red Cross emblem permanently on first aid, preparedness and related products sold to the public;

Surrender to J&J for destruction the Red Cross' inventory of accused products;

Hand over to J&J all Red Cross proceeds from the sale of these products with interest; and

Pay punitive damages to J&J along with attorney fees related to its legal action against the Red Cross.

“For a multi-billion dollar drug company to claim that the Red Cross violated a criminal statute that was created to protect the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross—simply so that J&J can make more money—is obscene,” said Mark W. Everson, President and CEO of the American Red Cross.

Research has found that only seven percent of Americans have taken the necessary steps to be prepared—and that more people would get prepared if preparedness products were more available, including at retail locations. Since 2004, the Red Cross has worked with several licensing partners to create first aid, preparedness and related products that bear the Red Cross emblem.

All money the Red Cross receives from the sale of these products to consumers is reinvested in its humanitarian programs and services.

“The Red Cross products that J&J wants to take away from consumers and have destroyed are those that help Americans get prepared for life's emergencies,” said Everson. “I hope that the courts and Congress will not allow Johnson & Johnson to bully the American Red Cross.”

For more information, please contact Carrie Martin at (202) 303-4459.

The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected.

Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.
