Whatever happened to the Navy midshipman who gave President Bush a bear hug?

If you want a good example of what a difference community newspapers make, read: VIRGINIA MILITARY NEWS - “Whatever happened to the Navy midshipman who gave President Bush a bear hug? Discipline. Then redemption.” By Brock Vergakis, Staff writer, Nov 21, 2018

“Bobby Rashad Jones couldn't help himself. He was the midshipman with the lowest grade-point average in the Naval Academy Class of 2001 – known as the anchor – and was overwhelmed with joy to receive his commission after spending years on academic probation…

“The former linebacker grabbed Bush's hand, pulled him in and hugged the commander-in-chief. And not just any hug; a bear hug that briefly lifted Bush off the ground as part of what Jones would later describe as an "out-of-body experience." A Prayer for Veterans: for the Men and Women in Uniform

A Prayer for Veterans: for the Men and Women in Uniform

11Nov2018 I was looking for a prayer for an upcoming Veterans program in case I was asked at the last minute to step in with a prayer. Looking for some inspiration, I found this prayer after a quick search: “A Veterans Day Prayer: For Those Who Protect Our Nation,” by Debbie McDaniel Crosswalk.com Blogspot for Debbie McDaniel of Fresh Day Ahead – from 11Nov2016 It may be found here: https://www.crosswalk.com/blogs/debbie-mcdaniel/a-veterans-day-prayer-for-those-who-protect-our-nation.html

Ms. McDaniel – if it is not okay that I have shared your prayer here – just email me at kevindayhoff at gmail.com and let me know and I will immediately take it down. THX – And thanks in advance for a great Veterans Day prayer.

+++++++++++

We honor you today Veterans, and all those who wear the uniform, as we pray...and give thanks...and remember.

The Lord bless you greatly for your service and sacrifice.

And may God bless America!

Dear God, We thank you for the freedom you have given to us, and for the price that was paid by Christ so that we could live free. We remember today. The cost of it all. The great sacrifice for freedom.

We thank you for the brave who have fought, and continue to fight, so courageously for our nation. We ask for your covering and blessing over them and their families. We pray that you would be gracious and encircle them with your peace. We pray for your great favor and goodness to be evident in their lives.

Please be with the men and women in uniform, who serve our communities and nation every single day. We ask that you provide your protection, that you would be their guiding force who leads the way, and their rear guard who keeps them safe from behind. We ask that you would draw them to yourself amidst the dangers they face in a dark world, for you are the Truth, you are the Way, you are the Light.

When the voice of hate rises up against them, we ask that you would silence it. When the plans of the enemy rise up to cause them to stumble, we ask that you would thwart it. When the forces of evil rise up to strike them down, we ask that you would stop it. Lord, we know how powerful you are, all have heard of your Great Name, and we ask that you would indeed be the wind beneath their wings, the power behind their efforts, the heart behind their service, as they are on the front lines against evil in our world today.

Help them to walk wisely. To stay covered in your armor. Give them godly discernment. Make them constantly aware of what lurks close by. Help them to be men and women of prayer, realizing that this is where their greatest help comes from. Help them to stay united and strong, bold and resolute, determined and unwavering.

Lord bless all those who wear the uniform, who serve our cities, our nation, our people. Bless their families. Bless those they love. Give them your great favor, this day, and every day.

Thank you that in our nation today, we are free to worship. We are free to pray. We are free to read your Word.  We are free to speak.  We are free to share. For this, we are incredibly grateful. Yet, we understand how quickly these freedoms can be taken away. Give us an increased awareness of the spiritual battle we're in. Help us to stand strong in you and for your purposes.

Thank you that as believers, we can be assured, you never leave us, and you are with us always, in this life, and the next.

Amen.

Proudly waving American flags, over 40 people walked half a mile from the St. Matthew United Church of Christ to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Sunday afternoon to honor those killed in service to their country in observance of Memorial Day.

"We honor the people that have given the utmost to our country and kept America free," said Arthur Jenne, a retired Marine Corps officer from Pleasant Valley.

Kevin Dayhoff, who served in the Marine Corps Reserves, was the keynote speaker.

"It is our duty and responsibility as citizens, to remember these brave sons of Carroll County and never forget the men and women who know all too well the cost of our freedom, for their service to our country is the greatest gift of all," Dayhoff said.

Irony Ensues after VA Secretary Asked Famous Veteran To Contact him

Irony Ensues after VA Secretary Asked Famous Veteran To Contact him

Nov. 12, 2015 – April 4, 2016

Always remember that at this point there are compelling and persuasive arguments for a single-payer health insurance public policy. Folks who advocate for such an approach are to be respected. Because of the Healthcare Affordability Act – Obamacare, insurance is rapidly becoming so expensive that employers can no longer afford it.

And because of the Healthcare Affordability Act, more and more individuals do not have health care coverage. Bankruptcies as a result of the cost of healthcare are rapidly increasing – and medicine has become so bureaucratized that one may wonder if the purpose of the healthcare delivery system today is to adhere to the rules of the Dept. of Health and Human Services or see to it that the patient gets better.

However, the biggest argument against a single-payer healthcare system run by the government is the healthcare provided by the Veterans Administration – motto: giving you a second chance to die for your country.

I.D.F- Sayeret Units (documentary)

I.D.F- Sayeret Units (documentary)

These three specific units are considered the most elite & prestigious of all special forces units in the IDF. The training and selection for these 3 units is the longest, most selective, most grueling, and more extensive than any other IDF units. Their operators are proficient in long range solo navigation, as opposed to other units where long range navigation is done with a minimum of 2 fighters.

Sayeret Matkal - The IDF's principal special operations/commando unit, used mainly to obtain strategic intelligence behind enemy lines and to perform hostage-rescue missions on foreign soil. It is directly subordinate to the Israeli Military Intelligence Directorate (AMAN). Modeled after Britain's Special Air Service, it is known by Israelis as the most elite unit (above all) in the IDF.

Shayetet 13 - The naval commando unit, equivalent to the US Navy SEALs or British Special Boat Service. Also tasked with maritime hostage-rescue missions. Part of the Israeli Navy. Founded in 1948 by former members of the Palyam, the naval branch of the Haganah.

Sayeret Shaldag - Founded in 1974 by several former Sayeret Matkal veterans, it is the Israeli Air Force's commando unit, specializing in forward air control, aerial & special reconnaissance, and target designation outside of Israel's borders.

7 Squadron SF flight are based at RAF Odiham and form part of the Joint Special Forces Aviation Wing (JSFAW) along with AAC 657 Squadron.
7 Sqn SF flight operate twin-rotor Chinook HC.4 Helicopters in support of SAS/SBSmissions. The primary role of SF flight Chinooks is as follows:
  • Insertion and extraction of special forces men and vehicles/boats
    (at land or at sea)
  • counter terrorism operations
(typically fast-roping SAS/SBS teams onto their objectives)
  • resupply of special forces
    (often deep behind enemy lines)
SF flight also carry out more general squadron duties such as cargo transport.

The unit was formed shortly after the 1982 Falklands conflict, during which a need for specialist helicopter support for SAS/SBS operations was highlighted. The RAF, which already had an experienced SF Hercules flight in 47 Squadron, was given the task. The Chinook HC.1 (later upgraded to HC.2/.2a) met the needs of the SAS and SBS, as it had the range and cargo-carrying capability their missions required.

A series of improvement programs have upgraded the .HC2, .HC2a and HC.3 (purchased special ops Chinooks that suffered procurement issues) to a common standard. 14 new-build HC.6 airframes have also been added to the RAF Chinook fleet.

  • 1991 - During Desert Storm 3 SF flight Chinook HC1s, each painted with special camouflage schemes and carrying extra avionics, deployed to a forward operating base at Al Jouf, Saudi Arabia. Over the course of the war, SF flight:
    • inserted SAS foot patrols into Western Iraq
    • flew resupply missions in support of SAS fighting columns operating in the western Iraqi desert
    • delivered an SBS sabotage team close to Baghdad in order to destroy communications cables
    • once Iraqi forces had been expelled from Kuwait, SF flight flew the SBS into the capital city to secure the British Embassy (watch video)
  • 1991 - 7 Squadron delivered humanitarian aid to the Kurds in Northern Iraq
  • Mid 90s - 7 Squadron supported NATO humanitarian efforts in Croatia
  • 1997 - 7 Squadron support the SAS on 2 separate missions to rescue imperiled British nationals in war-torn Albania
  • 1997 - 7 Squadron inserted SAS teams close to Pristina for Operation Tango
  • 1999 - Supported NATO operations in Kosovo
  • 2000 - 7 Squadron supported the 1 PARA Battle Group during Operation Palliserin Sierra Leone. The unit would later carry the SAS, SBS and Paras into the heart of the Sierra Leone jungle during Operation Barras.
  • December 2001 - the squadron flew SBS/SAS assault units onto the MV Nisha cargo ship in the English Channel
  • 2001-2014 - 7 Squadron SF flight is believed to have been flying in support of UKSF in both Afghanistan and Iraq. At the present time, public domain details of any such operations are few and far between.

Defense Day September 12, 1924 Parades to celebrate American power

On Sept. 12, 1924, Westminster, along with communities across the nation, observed National Defense Day.

At the time, the event was billed as a nationwide drill to test the readiness of our nation's defenses in the event of an attack.

[…]

Many local businesses, fire companies, schoolchildren, the Westminster Municipal Band and the Western Maryland College Football squad all took part in the parade.

The article also goes to great lengths to explain: "The members of Company H Machine Gun Company entertained the crowd with demonstrations in machine gun firing... Four machine guns were set up on the southern terrace of Hoffa field (at Western Maryland College — now known as McDaniel College) with four targets… The shooting was decidedly accurate.… Tracer bullets were used in the final shooting event. One target was a five gallon can of gasoline which was struck by the second shot. The can flamed in a mass when struck by the bullet."

Somehow, I simply cannot imagine such an occasion these days.
