Chicago Cubs Outfielder Rick Monday who served in the US Marine Corps saved the flag on April 25, 1976

Flag-saving moment still winning salutes

Updated 4/25/2006 2:49 AM ET By Bob Nightengale, USA TODAY

The hand was trembling, the voice was quivering, and tears were running down his face.

The World War II soldier, who survived the Pearl Harbor attack, looked Rick Monday in the eyes, slowly raised his right arm, and saluted him.

"Thank you," Monday recalls the soldier telling him last year. "And thank you from all of my shipmates."

Thirty years ago today, Monday became an American hero.

It was the day he saved the American flag.

"It was the greatest heroic act that's ever happened on a baseball field," Hall of Fame manager Tom Lasorda said. "He protected the symbol of everything that we live for. And the symbol that we live in the greatest country in the world."

The Hall of Fame recently voted Monday's act as one of the 100 classic moments in the history of the game. Monday, who spent 19 years in the major leagues and is a Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster, will be honored tonight with a video tribute at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

They'll replay a grainy videotape that was discovered in 1984 showing two people jumping over the railing in left field and spreading the American flag onto the Dodger Stadium turf. One man dousing the flag with lighter fluid. The other lighting a match. And Monday, playing for the Chicago Cubs, running in from center field, grabbing the flag and carrying it to safety.

They'll play Vin Scully's voice from the radio broadcast: "Wait a minute, there's an animal loose. Two of them! I'm not sure what he's doing out there. It looks like he's going to burn a flag. ...

"And Rick Monday runs and takes it away from him!"

And perhaps the crowd will duplicate the same reaction as 30 years ago: sitting in stunned silence, then standing, cheering, and spontaneously singing God Bless America.

August 26, 1939 History.com First televised Major League baseball game

August 26, 1939 History.com First televised Major League baseball game

This Day in History

On this day in 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game is broadcast on station W2XBS, the station that was to become WNBC-TV. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York.

At the time, television was still in its infancy. Regular programming did not yet exist, and very few people owned television sets–there were only about 400 in the New York area. Not until 1946 did regular network broadcasting catch on in the United States, and only in the mid-1950s did television sets become more common in the American household. Read more:

Baltimore Orioles baseball, celebrating 60 years of Orioles baseball.

Baltimore Orioles baseball, celebrating 60 years of Orioles baseball.

March 31, 2014

The Baltimore Orioles have a wonderful website, “Celebrating 60 years of Orioles Baseball” here: http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/bal/fan_forum/60_anniversary_mediaguides.jsp  Well, at least that is where the media guides, 1954-2013 are located.

I have written quite a number of stories on baseball, baseball in Carroll County, Md., and the Baltimore Orioles, http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/search/label/Sports%20Baltimore%20Orioles, over the years and have attended a few spring trainings in Florida.

Next week’s column will touch upon some of the history of Orioles baseball. That column will be published here: http://www.baltimoresun.com/search/dispatcher.front?Query=Kevin+Dayhoff&target=adv_all

I just spent a great deal of time thoroughly enjoying going through the 1954 media guide which may be found here: http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/bal/fan_forum/media_guides.jsp?loc=1954

Please enjoy… Just saying. Play ball.

MLB suspends Alex Rodriguez through 2014 season

Washington Post: Yankees star Alex Rodriguez has been suspended by Major League Baseball through the 2014 season, pending an appeal. Twelve other players have agreed to take 50-game bans as part of the league's Biogenesis drug investigation.

New York Times:

BREAKING NEWSMonday, August 5, 2013 3:14 PM EDT
Rodriguez Suspended Through 2014 Season in Doping Inquiry; 12 Others Suspended for 50 Games
Alex Rodriguez was among 13 players suspended by Major League Baseball on Monday for violating the league’s antidoping protocols, the biggest single-day drug bust in the sport’s history.
Rodriguez, pending an appeal, will be barred for 211 games – through the 2014 season — by far the longest ban levied by the league for a doping violation. The league cited his “use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited, performance-enhancing substances” over many years.
Recovering from hip surgery and a quadriceps strain, Rodriguez had planned to make his 2013 return to the Yankees’ lineup Monday night in Chicago against the White Sox. Rodriguez is expected to announce shortly whether he plans to appeal. He would be eligible to play until his appeal is heard by an arbitrator.

Baseball memories are a field of dreams in Carroll County and other Oriole Baseball stories By Kevin Dayhoff

By Kevin Dayhoff, February 26, 2012

In 1895 local newspapers, “carried a baseball column every week in the spring editions,” according to research by historian and Maryland State Senator Joe Getty.

Getty wrote about his research in the early 1990s for the Historical Society of Carroll County. “Following the Civil War, the sport of baseball became increasingly popular in Carroll County. Large groups of spectators would gather at the local ballfields to watch their friends and neighbors take on the baseball clubs from nearby communities. The games not only provided entertainment but also competitive outlets for rivalries between Carroll County's towns and villages.”

Many readers have shared that some of their best childhood memories centered on sports, especially baseball; whether it was pick-up neighborhood baseball or attending local Little League or Babe Ruth League baseball games.

When I visited the Orioles spring training practice in Sarasota on February 23, I enjoyed chatting with the team’s Director of Public Relations, Monica Barlow, from Ellicott City.

“It’s the 20th anniversary season of Camden Yards…,” said Barlow. “You know it’s considered to the ‘the ball park that forever changed baseball.’ (Now,) It’s the tenth-oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball… and every ballpark since has been inspired by – or used (design) elements from the (Camden) Yard(s.)

“We have a number of renovations (planned for Camden Yards) that we’re excited about…,” continued Ms. Barlow. “Most notably the six retired-number sculptures…”

According to the Orioles website, “Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the beautiful baseball-only facility in downtown Baltimore, became the official home of the Orioles on April 6, 1992.”

After last week’s column, some readers were curious about where the early Orioles teams played. Before Camden Yards, many of us have fond memories of attending games in the old Memorial Stadium on 33rd Street.

Memorial Stadium was the home of the American League Orioles from April 15, 1954 to October 6, 1991. However, according to numerous sources, including ballparksofbaseball.com, “The Baltimore Orioles of the International League played the first game at Memorial Stadium on April 20, 1950.”

When the Baltimore Orioles were a part of the “American Association League,” from1882 to 1889, the team played at a stadium called “Oriole Park,” which was located at 25th Street and Greenmount Avenue. Between 1889 and 1950, the team played in a number of locations.

Beginning around 1916 the team played at a wooden stadium, Terrapin Park at the corner of 29th Street and Greenmount Avenue, until it burned to the ground on July 3, 1944.

And, for the reader who asked; yes, the former Federal League Baltimore Terrapins baseball team (1914-1915) was a primary party in the famous May 29, 1922 Supreme Court decision in the Federal Baseball Club v. National League suit. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. wrote the majority opinion which determined that baseball was not subject to the Sherman Antitrust Act… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0304-20120301,0,4207984.story

…Nevertheless, as I arrived in Sarasota last Saturday evening, in part, to attend as many of the spring training sessions as possible, my thoughts turn to several of my all-time favorite baseball stories.

One story is about the saga of how one my sports heroes, Jackie Robinson, broke the Major League Baseball color barrier, which had begun in the 1880s, on April 15, 1947.

The first day of Baltimore Orioles’ spring training began Sunday when the pitchers and catchers reported for the annual ritual in Sarasota, Florida.

It’s a sure sign that – thankfully – spring weather is about to make its debut in Maryland.

Baseball has always been a favorite topic for many local history writers. And why not? Writing about baseball is fun. It has everything to warm the keyboard including summertime, arcane statistics, intrigue, colorful events, talent, family, and friends.

Articles about sports are fun to read and sports writers are some of my favorite writers… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4934

Kevin Dayhoff – Carroll Eagle Archive www.explorecarroll.com: SARASOTA, Fla. — Early in the morning last Sunday, Feb. 19, the Baltimore Orioles pitchers and catchers opened spring training at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla., …

[…]

… "Baseball came to Westminster the year after the end of the Civil War. Bat-and-ball games had been played since time immemorial, but modern baseball is descended from the game as played in New York City in the 1840s."

Hershberger records that one of the earliest references to baseball in Carroll was the "Olympian Base Ball Club (which) was founded on April 14, 1866."

That may just put Carroll County ahead of Baltimore. A number of media sources, including VisitBaltimore.org, the website for Baltimore Convention & Tourism Board, reports the first mention of baseball in Baltimore came in 1882, "when Harry Vonderhorst sponsored a Baltimore team in" what was then known as the American Association of baseball clubs, (1882-1891.)

"In 1894, the (at that time, National League) Baltimore Orioles won their first professional baseball championship…(In) 1903 the team moved to New York and eventually became today's NY Yankees." … The current Baltimore Orioles franchise began playing baseball in 1954 in Memorial Stadiumhttp://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0226-20120222,0,6575174.story
