Main Street in Westminster on Wednesday evening, April 10, was the scene of the 38th annual Westminster rite of spring – the Westminster Road Runners Club Main Street Mile – co-sponsored by the Westminster Recreation and Parks Department.

The annual event dates back to 1981 and is known as one of the fastest one-mile courses in the world, because it begins at the top of East Main Street at Fair Avenue and follows Main Street west to the Westminster Branch of the Carroll County Public Library - all downhill, with a total vertical drop of 144 feet.

This year the weather was nearly perfect as friends, families, and neighbors gathered on Main Street to take part in the historic event. In keeping with tradition the first heat began at 7 p.m. The race is run in two “heats.” Heat #1 is officially timed and scored with prizes awarded. To qualify for Heat #1, you must be age 11 or older and be capable of running a mile in less than 10 minutes.

Heat #2 is the “Connor Smith Memorial Fun Run.” It is neither officially timed nor scored. A clock showing an unofficial race time, however, will be at the finish line.

Because so many young people participate, the Main Street Mile is really quite a fun family event.  Even the “race numbers” are fun, since everyone under the age of 10 wears a race identification badge, which bears the number “1.”

The cheers for the “number 1’s” always seem the heartiest, since finishing is quite an accomplishment for the little runners. Every “number 1” is awarded a medal at the finish line.

Hats off to the Westminster Road Runners Club - WRRC. The Main Street Mile is a five-star community event that brings together many different folks for an enjoyable family-oriented experience.

The quality of the WRRC and the greater Westminster community shines through as the race itself has regional “cult” status in the running community and brings many visitors to Carroll County.

Organizing the Main Street Mile is a feat all to itself. The race seems simple enough - a one-mile straight shot. But organizing the race is deceivingly complicated as it involves closing Main Street and many intricately moving gears which all need to come together perfectly at a precise time.

Fortunately, getting complicated things done for the greater benefit of the community is something that is second nature for Carroll County. Thanks to over 50 volunteers and the help of the Westminster Police Department and Fire Police, this year’s event was another great success.

Credit also belongs to the “Race Director.”  There have been many great Main Street Mile race directors over the years, including Beth Weisenborn, Liuda Galinaitis, and one of the founders of the event, the late Dave Herlocker.

This year’s race director extraordinaire is once again the totally unflappable Sandy Cole Matthias.

The very busy Westminster Family Center in the Jerome Day historic armory building on Longwell Avenue graciously opened its doors for pre-race registration and the after-race ice cream and results.

Yes, ice cream, the key ingredient of all successful community events.

Historical Society of Carroll Co to celebrate Carroll County’s 175 birthday Jan. 19

Historical Society of Carroll Co to celebrate Carroll County’s 175  birthday Jan. 19

The Historical Society of Carroll County Invites You to the County's 175th Birthday on January 19, 2012 at 7:00p.m. Holy Cross Hall at the Church of the Ascension - Westminster

Holy Cross Hall in the Church of the Ascension will be the site of the annual Carroll County birthday party on January 19 at 7:00 p.m. Enjoy cake and punch with fellow Carroll Countians as we celebrate the 175th anniversary of the County's founding in 1837.

"Meet Dr. Beanes."

Through a first-person living history presentation by Paul E. Plamann, a senior staff member at Fort McHenry National Monument, we will discover a lesser known, but very important, figure in the story behind the 1814 British attack on Baltimore and the writing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

After the Battle of Bladensburg in August 1814, as the British forces were withdrawing from Upper Marlboro, two drunken stragglers were arrested by Dr. William Beanes, and thrown into jail.

One escaped, caught up to his unit and reported what had happened. A detachment of British soldiers returned to Upper Marlboro to free the imprisoned soldier and to arrest Dr. Beanes.

In order to obtain the release of Dr. Beanes, the townspeople of Upper Marlboro enlisted the help of Francis Scott Key of Georgetown.

Beanes, Key and an American army colonel (Skinner) were taken into custody by the British and detained eight miles off-shore from the shelling of Ft. McHenry. "By dawn's early light," they saw the American flag still flying over Ft. McHenry which led to Key's penning what became our national anthem.

Location:

The Church of the Ascension - Holy Cross Hall
23 N. Court St. Westminster, MD 21157
Free parking is available in the lot on Ralph Street. Free admission.

Arbor Day Activities and Tree City USA for Westminster

In commemorating Arbor Day, the City of Westminster Tree Commission has undertaken projects to enhance the tree canopy, landscaping, and appearance of downtown Westminster.

Among the many projects is a scheduled installation of three Cherry Trees at Belle Grove Square Thursday April 2, 3:30 pm, where Mayor Tom Ferguson will read an Arbor Day proclamation, declaring Arbor Day and Westminster’s dedication to it. The trees are replacements for other trees that were in poor health and that posed a threat to safety. The remaining trees have been inspected for safety issues as well as pruned, if necessary.

Another three replacement trees will be installed on Willis St. in cooperation with the Parkview condominium association—again due to health issues. Another 11 street trees will be installed on West Main, Pennsylvania Ave, and John St, replacing trees that were previously removed or had died.

Over 120 large shrubs (Bottlebrush Buckeye) were installed along the Wakefield Valley Trail. These plants will eventually provide shade for the trail, provide habitat for wildlife, and reduce the mowing necessary in that area.

The activities are coordinated by the Westminster Tree Commission, a group of local volunteers charged with overseeing the City’s robust urban tree canopy program. Thanks to the efforts of the Tree Commission and the City’s grounds maintenance staff, Westminster achieved Tree City USA (Arbor Day Foundation) designation for the 21st consecutive year in 2008. Only five other municipalities in Maryland have earned this distinction more often than Westminster.

If you have any questions about the event, or if you want to participate on the Tree Commission, please contact Tim Rogers, Natural and Cultural Resources Planner, at 410-848-4628.

OBAMA RESIGNS Enlists in Peace Corps!

OBAMA RESIGNS Enlists in Peace Corps!

April 1, 2009

Saying he is practicing what he preaches, Barack Obama has resigned from the Presidency, effective April 1, moved his family out of the Oval Office and enlisted in the Peace Corps, circa 1969.

In response to the seemingly shocking transition to citizen volunteerism, pundits at CNN, Fox and MSNBC said they saw it coming and said they saw the foreshadowing on the wall when they detected a subtle secret code word slipped into all 70 of candidate Obama’s campaign paraphernalia: The word: CHANGE!

Fox News’ prime time heavyweight Bill O’Really? Responded to the surprise move, saying, “No surprise here. I simply applied one day for each of bumper stickers, yard signs and billboards and deduced that on day 70 of his term, Barack would simply pack his bags and join the Peace Corps or at least the Americorps. What else could he do?”

MSNBC’s Keith Uberman responded to the stunning move, stating, “Friedrich Nietzsch spelled it out for us on January 3, 1889 during what historical revisionists called a psychotic break. What really happened was Nietzsch simply had a vision just 24 years after the conclusion of the Civil War that in exactly 120 years, or 144 years from the end of the Civil War, a future global superpower with wings of eagles would see a freed slave elevated to lead that nation to embrace more changes in one month than the prior millennium, with no need to finish his term. Actually, it’s quite elementary!”

CNN’s Larry Bling said, “When I interviewed Barack and saw the way he eyeballed my suspenders, winking at me with that sly smile that he was saying he was about to suspend his campaign. After all, we know that 90% of all communication in nonverbal!”

But Enquiring-minded Americans, not content hearing hearsay from irrationally exuberant Lush Rimbaugh or Schlosh Hannity, and wanting to hear about the unprecedented move from the former President, locked arms across Pennsylvania Avenue, trapping the exiting Volkswagen Bus, forcing the former First Lady to stop the vehicle, allowing the populist former President to speak. Standing by the van, flashing a peace sign to the adoring crowds, Citizen Obama spoke but a single Orswellian word: “Rosebud.”
