Commentary Blubaugh: It was a great run, but it's time to cut the cord

Commentary Blubaugh: It was a great run, but it's time to cut the cord

April 7, 2019 by Bob Blubaugh

https://www.carrollcountytimes.com/opinion/columnists/cc-op-blubaugh-040719-story.html

I’m in the process of ending an 18-year relationship.

Decisions like this are never easy. It’s going to be a major change. The house is going to feel a bit empty. I know I’m going to say or do some things out of habit before remembering. The process will be painful at times, but I’m convinced it’s for the best and everyone will be better off.

Yes, after 18 faithful years as a customer, I’m breaking up with DirecTV. I’m cutting the cord.

This doesn’t make me unique. Some 33 million Americans have left pay-TV behind, eschewing cable or satellite television in favor of streaming services. It is estimated that 6 million customers cut the cord last year and that even more will do so this year.

According to techjury.com, nearly all Americans aged 25-34 access some TV content through the internet and 90 percent of young people say they prefer consuming TV this way than via cable or satellite packages.

This demographic, of course, never knew what it was like to grow up with just three channels.

Cardinal Dolan on Michael Sam: “Bravo ... I would have no sense of judgment on him..." - FishbowlDC

Cardinal Dolan on Michael Sam: “Bravo” - FishbowlDC

"In a pre-recorded interview on “Meet the Press” to air this Sunday, Cardinal Dolan of New York told David Gregory that he had no judgement for gay NFL player Michael Sam."

By Patrick Tutwiler on March 7, 2014

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowldc/cardinal-dolan-on-michael-sam-bravo_b123793
From the interview:
DAVID GREGORY: Michael Sam, from your home state, the football player, revealed that he was gay, first in the NFL.  And you saw the celebration from the President, the First Lady, and they were saying what a courageous step that was.  How did you view it?
CARDINAL DOLAN: Good for him.  I would have no sense of judgment on him.  God bless ya.  I don’t think, look, the same bible that tells us that teaches us well about the virtues of chastity and the virtue of fidelity and marriage also tells us not to judge people.  So I would say, “Bravo.”
Cardinal Dolan also said that Pope Francis would probably meet with victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, and that he “would be surprised if he did not.”
For the full interview, watch “Meet the Press” this Sunday.

People at CNBC Are Relieved That Maria Bartiromo Left by JOE WEISENTHAL DEC. 5, 2013

The Wall Street Journal recently reported on the dismal ratings at CNBC, Fox Business, and Bloomberg. Bloomberg, meanwhile, is in the midst of some kind reassessment of its TV business, and there's widespread apprehension there about what the next direction is for the network.

And the big momentous event was the recent departure of Maria Bartiromo from CNBC to Fox Business.

Bartiromo is the biggest star in financial TV history, and her leaving the biggest network to go to a much smaller rival is a major moment.

So what's the mood at CNBC following this departure?

One person who was at CNBC headquarters the day after Bartiromo's departure actually described a widespread sense of "relief."

It's not that Bartiromo was disliked.  It's that CNBC, according to multiple sources, is an insanely competitive place internally, Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/departure-of-maria-bartiromo-at-cnbc-frees-up-guests-2013-12?op=1

Digital usage overtaking all legacy

media http://newsosaur.blogspot.com/2013/08/digital-usage-overtaking-all-legacy.html

Americans this year are likely to spend as many hours consuming content on digital devices as the combined amount of time that they devote to gazing at TV and paging through print, according to eMarketer, a research-aggregation service.

After culling through reports from more than 40 institutions, eMarketer forecasts that the average amount of time likely to be spent on digital media this year will climb to five hours and 9 minutes (5:09), as compared with 4:31 in 2012.

If the prediction holds true, then the amount of time spent with digital media will for the first time surpass the roughly 4½ hours per day that Americans historically have watched television.

While TV heretofore has been unchallenged as the most popular medium, the shift to digital consumption (as discussed previously here) could create considerable static for local broadcasters. " ... http://newsosaur.blogspot.com/2013/08/digital-usage-overtaking-all-legacy.html

Edward N. Albro, PCWorld: Kiss Your Cable Bill Goodbye With These HDTV Antennas

Kiss Your Cable Bill Goodbye With These HDTV Antennas

Forget rabbit ears: A new breed of stylish TV antennas deliver a great picture without dominating your living room. We tried five good options.

How's this for a deal: Pay less than $50 now to save $1000 or more each year. That's the kind of savings you could reap by ditching your cable or satellite TV service and using an HDTV antenna instead.
And you needn't conjure up scary images of clambering up on your roof to mount a skeleton of aluminum bones. In many locations, you can use an unobtrusive inside antenna and still receive dozens of stations with, in some cases, a crystal-clear high-definition picture.
I tried five leading interior antennas, ranging from one that resembles a sheet of paper you stick to a wall to one that looks like it should be receiving signals from distant planets. I discovered that, for my location, I could get reasonably good results with inexpensive and non-ugly options such as... http://www.pcworld.com/article/246217/kiss_your_cable_bill_goodbye_with_these_hdtv_antennas.html#tk.hp_ess

Barbara Billingsley, definitive '50s TV mom, dead at 94

Z on TV:

OCTOBER 16, 2010

Barbara Billingsley, definitive '50s TV mom, dead at 94

Barbara Billingsley, whose character of June Cleaver on the 1950's TV sitcom "Leave It to Beaver" helped define motherhood for a generation of baby boomers, died Saturday at the age of 94.
Her death was the result of a long illness and she died at her home in Santa Monica, a family spokeswoman told CNN.
Along with Jane Wyatt as Margaret Anderson on "Father Knows Best" and Donna Reed as Donna Stone on "The Donna Reed Show," Billingsley helped create an idealized depiction of the All-American TV mom living with her nuclear family in a post-World-War II, white-picket-fence fantasy neighborhood. Mayfield was the fictional community in which the Cleavers lived, and it was part Frank Capra's small-town America and part Utopian vision of the suburbs to which the rapidly expanding middle class was already starting to move at the end of the 1950s and early '60s when the series aired... http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/zontv/2010/10/barbara_billingsley_di.html

Jesse Stone No Remorse

I enjoyed the latest in the Tom Selleck - Jesse Stone series by the late Robert B. Parker that aired on CBS this evening...

Jesse Stone: No Remorse

Sunday, May 9th, 9/8c on CBS

JESSE STONE: NO REMORSE, starring Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award winner Tom Selleck, will be broadcast Sunday, May 9th, 9/8c (2 hours) on the CBS Television Network. Selleck reprises his Emmy-nominated role as Jesse Stone ("Jesse Stone: Sea Change") in the sixth installment of the Jesse Stone franchise from Sony Pictures Television. The series includes "Stone Cold," "Jesse Stone: Night Passage," "Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise," "Jesse Stone: Sea Change" and "Jesse Stone: Thin Ice." The movies are based on characters created by the late Robert B. Parker in the best-selling series of books.

In JESSE STONE: NO REMORSE, Police Chief Jesse Stone, who was suspended by the Paradise, Mass. Town Council, begins moonlighting for his friend, State Homicide Commander Healy, by investigating a series of murders in Boston, leaving Rose and Suitcase to handle a crime spree in Paradise on their own. Jesse pours his energy into his work in an effort to push away his twin demons: booze and women. When his investigation leads to notorious mob boss Gino Fish, Jesse's pursuit becomes hazardous.

Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Kathy Baker ("Picket Fences") and Kohl Sudduth ("Grosse Pointe") reprise their roles as Rose Gammon and Luther "Suitcase" Simpson, the only police officers in Paradise. Stephen McHattie ("2012") reprises his role as State Homicide Commander Healy, as does William Devane ("24") as Jesse's psychiatrist, Dr. Dix, and William Sadler ("The Shawshank Redemption") as Gino Fish. Saul Rubinek ("Warehouse 13") returns as Hasty Hathaway, fresh from a stint in prison, and Krista Allen ("The Starter Wife") joins the cast as Hathaway's ex-wife, Cissy, who never misses an opportunity to tell Jesse she's interested.

Jesse Stone

Name
: Jesse Stone

Current occupation: Police chief of the small town of Paradise, MA

Previous occupations: Homicide detective, LAPD (fired); minor-league baseball shortstop (injured)

Marital status: Divorced from Jennifer Stone, actress

Vices: Alcohol (see LAPD job, above), beautiful women

About the Jesse Stone Movies

Jesse Stone: Stone Cold: Tom Selleck is Jesse Stone, a former L.A. homicide detective who left behind the big city and an ex-wife to become the police chief of the quiet New England fishing town of Paradise, Massachusetts. Stone's old habits die hard as he continues to indulge in his two favorite things - scotch and women. When a series of murders take place, and a high school girl is raped, he's forced to face his own demons in order to solve the crimes.

Jesse Stone: Night Passage: Co-starring William Devane (TV’s Knot’s Landing), the TV movie finds Chief Stone (Selleck) settling into his new life in Paradise when he becomes obsessed with finding the killer of a teenage girl. His quest to solve the murder unearths facts indicating there is more to the girl’s history than originally suspected and the new clues lead him to probe the Boston underworld.

Jesse Stone: Death In Paradise: Jesse Stone: Night Passage is a prequel to 2005’s Stone Cold. Co-starring Stephanie March (TV’s Law & Order: SVU) and Stephen Baldwin (The Usual Suspects), the telefilm depicts Jesse Stone’s (Selleck) first days as Paradise, Massachusetts’ Chief of Police. He must immediately find the killer of his predecessor, plus investigate a domestic violence situation involving the city’s resident hothead (Baldwin), whose ties to a local bank manager expose a money-laundering scheme.

Jesse Stone: Sea Change: Co-starring William Devane, Kathy Baker (Edward Scissorhands) and Sean Young (Blade Runner), this installment finds Chief Stone (Selleck) bored with what he perceives as his mundane life, struggling to keep his drinking and his obsession with beautiful women under control. Stone’s restlessness gets the best of him and he re-opens a 12-year-old cold file involving the murder of a bank teller. The inquiry reveals fresh clues and Stone soon finds himself busier than ever as the unsolved case leads to another centered around an alleged rape aboard a yacht during the town’s annual Race Week.

Jesse Stone: Thin Ice: Jesse Stone is back! When his friend and fellow cop is shot during a visit to Boston, small town police chief Jesse Stone risks his life and career to solve the crime while also investigating the disappearance of a missing child in this exciting fifth installment in the popular Jesse Stone movies based on the best-selling books by Robert B. Parker.

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff Posted on http://explorecarroll.com/community/3484/eaglearchive/ 10/04/09

One of the more interesting tidbits of history from October in yesteryear didn't take place in Carroll County, but had an impact upon our farming community — and what television looks like today.

It was Oct. 5, 1947, that the first televised presidential speech took place. President Harry S. Truman took to the airwaves to deliver an address to the nation.

The topic wasn't war, the economy or health care ... it was wheat.

What was so important about wheat? Glad you asked. Barely two years had passed since the devastating war in Europe had ended, and the continent was still in chaos.
