2018 winners of the annual Mike Eaton scholarship announced

2018 winners of the annual Mike Eaton scholarship announced

The Historical Society of Carroll County announces the 2018 winners of the annual Mike Eaton scholarship.

Since 2011 The Historical Society of Carroll County has been awarding the Mike Eaton Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to honor the memory of William Granville “Mike” Eaton, an English teacher at Westminster High School from 1935 to 1971. He also directed plays and advised the Key Club. He inspired his students to challenge and improve themselves in many ways. He always believed in the great potential of his students to excel, and they have proven him correct.

Mr. Eaton brought panache to his classroom with his deck of index cards from which he pulled the targets of his well-placed questions. The cards brought their share of insecurity to the ill prepared, but Westminster High School seniors began to discover something, Shakespeare wasn't so bad after all. Mr. Eaton commanded the classroom. Heading the Drama Club at Westminster High School, he also commanded excellence in theatrical offerings.

Mr. Eaton was born in Centerville, Maryland and passed away from cancer in 1995. He graduated from Western Maryland College in 1930 and subsequently went on to earn his Master’s degree at Columbia University in New York.

For over three decades, Mike Eaton was Thelma Hoffman’s star boarder at Hoffman’s Inn, now owned by the Historical Society of Carroll County and known as Cockey’s Tavern, its name from when it was built in 1820.

The Mike Eaton Scholarship has been established through the Historical Society of Carroll County to recognize inspirational teachers, like Mr. Eaton, in the lives of the current graduating class of Westminster High School. The winning students wrote an essay about their most inspirational teacher.

Two Mike Eaton scholarships were awarded this spring to graduating seniors from Westminster High School. The teachers in the winning essays were also recognized at the Westminster High School awards ceremonies on June 4, 2018.

The two winning students were Margie Spann and Richard Folderauer. They each received a $500.00 scholarship and their most influential teacher received an engraved school bell.

Mr. Folderauer named Mrs. Melissa Purdy as his most influential teacher. Ms. Spann named Mrs. Kim Saltsburg as her most influential teacher.

Like Mr. Eaton, Mrs. Purdy is the Westminster High School drama teacher. According to Mr. Folderauer, every year Mrs. Purdy puts her heart, mind, and soul into three productions. She is a director, mentor, and friend to her students. She teaches kids from all walks of life the importance and the joy of performing. By doing that, she gives her students a love for performing and has inspired Richard Folderauer to inspire others with that love of performing.

Ms. Spann called Ms. Saltsburg an inspirational teacher whom she said was energetic, humorous, and beaming. She made interactive lessons that inspired Spann to anticipate going to class, look forward to studying for tests, and yearn to learn more. All of this happened in Mrs. Saltsburg’s Human Anatomy and Physiology class. While she introduced many to the pungent smell of formaldehyde; in the process she helped Margie Spann flourish in class and introduced her to the medical field, as she now plans to become a doctor.

Mr. Folderauer and Ms. Spann will both be attending the University of Maryland, College Park.

The Historical Society is pleased to be sponsoring this scholarship in memory of Mike Eaton who was an influential and memorable teacher at Westminster High School for over 35 years.

Caroline’s hands – our dried mangoes.

Caroline’s hands – our dried mangoes.

August 21, 2013

Long road trips require ample portions of dried mangoes in order to properly maintain the mind, body, spirit and soul to be appropriately prepared for the journey.

Pictured here are the all-important hands that handled the dried mangoes on our recent trip to the 2013 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Churchwide Assembly in Pittsburg during the week of Aug. 12-17 in Pittsburgh.

This picture was taken on our way up the road to Pittsburgh on August 10, 2013. It captures a moment in which the dried mangoes are in Caroline’s hands as she waxes poetically upon the importance and spirituality of this food of the Gods…

The Assembly took “action on some 80 ‘memorials’ or requests from synods asking for Churchwide Assembly action on significant issues,” according to a thoughtful and comprehensive article written about the assembly by Lutheran magazine writer, Elizabeth Hunter, “Paperless in Pittsburgh.” The article by Ms. Hunter appeared in the August edition of the magazine.

Ms. Hunter noted that voting members faced “Some big decisions … amid daily worship, prayer and Bible studies under the theme "Always Being Made New," based on 2 Corinthians 5:17.”

At the 2013 Lutheran Churchwide Assembly, 952 voting members from the ELCA's 65 synods and 9,638 congregations elected a new presiding bishop and secretary, and deliberated and adopted various budgets, financial campaigns, social statements.

Last week, Caroline Babylon, Evelyn Babylon, Beth Clementson and I volunteered at the 2013 Churchwide Assembly that was hosted by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod.

It was the last biennial gathering of the ELCA's highest legislative authority before the assembly transitions to a triennial cycle, according to Ms. Hunter.

“Always being made New” was the theme of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in American 2013 Churchwide Assembly that took place August 12-17, 2013 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, PA.

“World of Warcraft master systems designer Greg Street, class of 1991, talks about how his liberal arts education at McDaniel helped him become a video game designer at 7 p.m. April 30 during SmartTALK with president Roger Casey in Decker Center Forum.
“Street currently works as a master systems designer at Blizzard Entertainment in Irvine, Calif. He graduated from McDaniel with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Philosophy in 1991 and went on to earn a Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of Texas at Austin. He worked as a marine biologist before moving into the game design field.
“The hour-long event, which is free and open to the public, includes questions and answers from the audience.
“McDaniel College’s SmartTALK brings notable alumni back to campus for an on-stage conversation with president Roger Casey on their subject of expertise. Past SmartTALK presenters have included Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Wendy Ruderman, career foreign-service diplomat Tom Armbruster, National Marine Fisheries Service director Eric Schwaab, National Teacher of the Year Michelle Shearer, champion of the environment Gerald W. Winegrad, and, senior vice-president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Bernard Franklin.”

Inside Mac Games - Interview: Ensemble's Greg Street November 20, 2006 | Michael Phillips http://www.insidemacgames.com/features/view.php?ID=488&Page=1: “Games don't just appear out of thin air. Games are created by teams of designers and programers toiling in small underground vaults, unaware of the world above. At least, that's the information to which I'm privy. At any rate, games do require designers and Age of Empires III is no exception. Recently, I had the chance to chat with Greg Street, leader of the design team at Ensemble Studios that created Age of Empires III, about his role at Ensemble, what gamers can expect from this latest generation of the Age of Empires series and other industry related topics of interest. This is a good read, trust me…”

From the Miami Herald: Miami-Dade Public Schools will open its first video-game-themed magnet program this fall, with the goal of teaching students how to design and program video games, the Miami Herald reported on Monday.
The iTech Academy at Miami Springs Senior High School has 125 spots for the freshman class.
“We’re going to be a school that produces not only games, but apps. It’s part of my vision,” Principal Anna Rodriguez was quoted as saying. “I can see our students building holograms. I can really see it.”
According to the newspaper, the focus on design and coding reflects state and national efforts to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Proponents of video-game programs say they prepare students for jobs in the 21st century.
In 2010-11, Florida had about 3,300 students enrolled in game, simulation and animation courses, the Herald reported… http://cnsnews.com/news/article/floridas-new-video-game-magnet-school-now-accepting-applications

Carroll County MD receives bond bill money By Adam Bednar

Carroll receives bond bill money By Adam Bednar

Posted: Friday, April 16, 2010 By Adam Bednar, Times Staff Writer

Some state dollars are on the way to help pay for capital improvements in Carroll.

The General Assembly amended the state’s Capital Budget Bill to include $150,000 for the Carroll County Agriculture Center.

Sen. Larry Haines, R-District 5, said that he was happy the ag center is receiving state funding this year.

Both the House and Senate each funded $7.5 million in legislative projects for the 2010 session.

According to a list of bond bills being funded, the General Assembly reviewed more than $35 million in requests.

[…]

The bond money will be used on capital improvements at the agricultural center, said Caroline Babylon, the center’s treasurer. However, the specific uses haven’t yet been decided by the center’s board, she said.

Carroll Hospital Center also was awarded $700,000 to help pay for creating extra space for Access Carroll on its campus. However, these funds were included in Gov. Martin O’Malley’s capital budget and were not considered a legislative project, said Sen. David Brinkley, R-District 4.

Dinner with my wife

August 10, 2009 - August 13, 2009

http://kevindayhoffart.blogspot.com/2009/08/dinner-with-my-wife.html

Dinner with my wife at Ledo’s. It must have been a mistake that neither Caroline nor I had a meeting last Monday evening and we could actually have dinner together. (On Twitpic here: http://twitpic.com/dftqm)

Of course, we took our child, Mr. Moose.

There were quite a few folks in the restaurant that enjoyed the fact that we took Mr. Moose with us. Mr. Moose has become quite a litmus test about people.

I frequently find it amusing to find folks who do not seem amused with Mr. Moose. For me, it is sort of a test as to who is human and who is not… And yes, I still deny that I am a cylon…q.v. http://tinyurl.com/ovlbrb and http://twitpic.com/8qsyp or http://tinyurl.com/psljze

However, some folks do not get it. Usually an indicator that such folks should get a life.
