Says more abt FCPS than Nash: Nash loses FCPS social media job wk after being in Twitter spotlight

My bar of amazement has been moved. This is nuts. Says more about FCPS than Katie Nash.

Katie and I wrote for the same magazine many years ago. I do not know her well, but what I do know leads me to believe that she is an exceptional person. This situation really-really casts the FCPS in an unflattering light. It is mickey-mouse crap like this that promotes a perception that the best and the brightest need not apply for work with local government. I know many of the best and the brightest in local government and privately they struggle with the byzantine intrigues and indecipherable lack of common sense that has become "local government."

……

I also run several social media sites for some high visibility and high profile organizations in the community. We all know the perils of unintended consequences. We all know to stay as clear as possible from a tweet or a post that could possibly be misunderstood. All my inquiries indicate that no one was offended, including the student. It opened a great, if not fun, dialogue, And if the powers to be found the post inconsistent with established standards, then use it as a teaching moment and move on. The folks I work for have taken down posts before. Whatever. Katie does not have mean bone in her body. I know full well that adjectives are not persuasive speech - but "Surreal," is the best adjective I have seen in this discussion yet. I think this says more about FCPS than it does about Katie. Thank you.

Frederick County Public Schools has fired Katie Nash, an employee who stirred up attention for how she ran the district’s Twitter feed last week, she said.

Michael Doerrer, a district spokesman, said Nash was no longer employed with the school system, but he couldn’t comment on the circumstances.

Nash started working as the web experience coordinator in November. Among her responsibilities was to run the district’s social media accounts. Her salary was $44,066.

On Jan. 5, a student tweeted to the Twitter account, @FCPSMaryland, asking schools to close “tammarow.”

Nash wrote in response from the school Twitter feed: “But then how would you learn how to spell ‘tomorrow?’ :)”

The response from Nash’s FCPS tweet garnered more than 1,000 retweets and 1,000 likes and she became the subject of a hashtag, #KatiefromFCPS. And later #freekatie also appeared in students’ Twitter feeds after a report from local TV station WHAG-TV that Twitter access had been taken away from her.

I sat down with Republican alderman candidate Katie Nash recently to discuss her campaign. Katie finished second in the Republican primary and interestingly, received 145 less votes than alderman candidate Derek Shackelford, who finished sixth in the Democratic primary and did not advance to the general election.

Katie told me it was a year ago she decided to run for alderman and that she decided to run because she wanted to see a nonpartisan city election because she feels issues at the local level are nonpartisan.

She told me she grew up in Baltimore County and graduated from Hood College, where she also received her MBA in 2008. For, the past three years, she has worked for a defense contractor, located in Frederick, as a program manager.

MarylandReporter.com: A new process for taking the politics out of ethics won support from the Frederick County Council

ETHICS IN FREDERICK: A new process for taking the politics out of ethics won support from the Frederick County Council on Tuesday, but some council members had critiques. The council voted 6-1 to affirm the confirmation of Chris Glass and Ernest Heller to the Frederick County Ethics Commission, the first nominees recommended through a five-person pilot committee that Democratic County Executive Jan Gardner empowered earlier this year, with the aim of creating a more independent ethics commission. The process found some allies on the council, Danielle Gaines of the Frederick News Post reports.

How do you buy Christmas presents for over 1,800 needy children? The answer in Frederick, Maryland, is Christmas Cash for Kids. For 30 years, the Frederick community has dug deep into their pockets to help their neighbors in providing presents on Christmas morning that otherwise wouldn’t be there. [image: WFMD Christmas Cash for Kids] According to the Patty Pollatos Fund (PPF) website, this is the 40th year of the Christmas Cash for Kids campaign. May 19, 2012 By Courtney Mabeus News-Post Staff

CAMP ROUND MEADOW -- It's been a long week for ML Carroll, she said Friday night as she leaned against a wood-paneled wall in a cabin at Camp Round Meadow. A helicopter could be heard whirling off in the distance.

Leaders from the G-8 countries began arriving Friday evening for a round of talks that would last through today. Along with them came hundreds of journalists and other support staff. At least a few local residents were on hand to help keep some of the hungry travelers fed.

But Carroll, president of Canapés Catering, which is based in Frederick and also provides catering for ThorpeWood, a mountain retreat in Thurmont, didn't even initially plan to be here. Word-of-mouth, she said, provided the impetus that led her to the camp Friday… http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/display.htm?StoryID=135937

Final Frederick County comprehensive plan hearing draws large crowd – Frederick News-Post

Frederick County saved the biggest group for last Tuesday night, with more than 40 lawyers and residents speaking at a public hearing about the county's proposed comprehensive plan and zoning review.

The public hearing regarding the New Market region was the last scheduled meeting before the Board of County Commissioners begins its review of individual requests for planning and zoning changes. Written comments will continue to be accepted throughout the process.

There are 42 applications up for consideration in the region that includes Mount Airy, New Market and Lake Linganore. If approved, it could lead to the construction of hundreds of homes on 3,600 acres.

"We are concerned with any properties within a mile of our borders," Mount Airy Mayor Patrick Rockinberg said. "Rezoning these properties would be inconsistent with the will of the people."

Building on properties near the town would lead to housing growth that negatively affects roads, schools and the general standard of living, he said.

"(Our residents) came to escape growth," Rockinberg said. "The citizens did not move to Mount Airy for more growth, they moved away from it."

More than a dozen residents stood when resident Sarah Dorrance spoke against the Wimmer property -- an 86-acre property along Sidney Road.

She questioned the motive of the commissioners to revisit the last comprehensive plan a year after it was approved. The plan adopted in 2010 was designed to set planning and zoning guidelines for the county. In most cases, properties went from being zoned for residential or commercial growth to agricultural.

"I'm not happy with the procedure," Dorrance said. "I think it's a waste of taxpayers' money." … http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/display_comments.htm?StoryID=131242#postComments

Frederick County Commissioner Election Issues Poll Results

The first MacRo Report Blog Poll is complete, and it shows some interesting results.

We asked our participants to give us their opinion of the one issue that they thought is the most important issue in our local election for the 5 seats on the Frederick County Board of County Commissioners. With 19 candidates in the running, which will be whittled down to ten in the September 14th primary, those who are out knocking on the doors are hearing it firsthand. So, how do our results differ from what the candidates are hearing? We’ll get to that in a moment.

As you can see from the chart on the right, by far the top two concerns of our participants are pretty much in line with major voter concerns on the national level: Taxes and Government Spending (38%) and Preserving Jobs in our Community (28%) … a total of 67%... http://www.macroreportblog.com/general/frederick-county-commissioner-election-issues-poll-results

The Tentacle - "Two for the Road" by Farrell Keough

"Two for the Road" by Farrell Keough

http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3881

Farrell Keough has penned a thoughtful column in The Tentacle worthy of your attention about the upcoming Frederick County elections:

July 27, 2010 "Two for the Road" by Farrell Keough

“This column may come as a shock to some, as it will be about Those People! In fact, it will not only be about Those People, but will actually promote a couple of Those People! I speak, of course, about Democrats.

Like it or not, they exist and live among us. Why they chose that particular ideology is indiscernible, but they have made their choice. And what’s more, they constitute a large portion of our voting public. To that end, there are two running for different offices that have piqued interest – Brad Young running for Frederick County Board of Education and Michael Kurtianyk running for Frederick Board of County Commissioners More: http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3881

Frederick County woman dead after altercation with State Police

A Frederick County woman has died after an altercation with State Police responding to a domestic disturbance in Libertytown.

Saturday, June 19 2010

By Kevin Dayhoff

The tranquility of a quiet sleepy town which straddles Liberty Road in eastern Frederick County was shaken on Thursday when a woman died in an altercation with Maryland State Police responding to a domestic disturbance.

An autopsy has revealed that Veronica Harding-Perkins, 46, of the 12,000 block of Main Street in Libertytown, Maryland, died of gunshot wounds, according to a police report. “Further tests are being conducted and additional results are pending. Additional details will not be released due to the ongoing investigation.”

Police say that at approximately 12:30 a.m. Thursday afternoon, Corporal Eric Corbin, an eight-year veteran of the State Police, along with a second trooper, was dispatched to the scene of a domestic disturbance involving a firearm. The second trooper involved is not being released by State Police because “he did not fire his agency issued weapon.”

The 911 cell phone call to the Frederick County Law Enforcement Center came from the deceased woman’s husband, Dean Perkins, 45.

When police arrived on the scene, Harding-Perkins, who was reported to have been armed with a semi-automatic pistol, refused to respond to several police requests for her to surrender.

As the incident unfolded, police attempted in to gain entry through the front door of the residence. “Knowing Harding-Perkins was armed with a loaded weapon, CPL Corbin took cover behind a soda machine located off of the front porch of the home.

“As he peered around the corner, Harding-Perkins was standing inside of her front door with her semi-automatic pistol pointed at the trooper. Fearing for his life, as well as the safety of others, CPL Corbin responded by firing his agency issued firearm,” police say.

At that time, Hardings-Perkins retreated back into her home and the two troopers backed off and immediately secured the area.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s 2009-year end report “responding to domestic disturbance calls proved to be particularly dangerous for America’s law enforcement officers during 2009…

“A total of 1,647 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the last 10 years, an average of one death every 53 hours or 165 per year… On average, more than 62,000 law enforcement officers are assaulted each year, resulting in some 21,000 injuries.”

Accordingly, police proceeded “on the side of caution, police secured the area and an evacuation was made of the adjacent residents.” Police report that at that time there was no clear evidence indicating Hardings-Perkins had been injured.

The Maryland State Police Special Tactical Assault Team Element team, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, and the Hostage Recovery Team responded to the scene and tried to make contact with Harding-Perkins. “Again, police received no response,” said the police report.

Later, at approximately 5:45 a.m., the Special Tactical Assault Team Element entered the residence and Harding-Perkins was found lying on the dining room floor with a loaded semi-automatic pistol.

As the investigation into the incident continues, both state troopers who reported to the incident are on administrative leave.

Frederick, Maryland – The planning committee of An Evening on the Riviera is proud to announce that our October 2009 event raised over $93,000 in cash and in-kind donations and services. The event’s sponsors came from over 20 corporations and local businesses, and dozens more companies and individuals gave generous gifts for use in the silent auction and raffle.

In addition, the restaurants and caterers that participated in and competed for the coveted top prizes of the evening lent unstintingly of their time, talents and materials. Their contributions are irreplaceable in making the evening the unique experience that it is for our patrons.

An Evening on the Riviera is produced entirely through the efforts of a volunteer committee. The combined dedication of our volunteers and our many sponsors and participants make it the highly entertaining and magical evening that it is, while at the same time allowing us to maximize our charitable contributions to our community. All distributable proceeds from the event go directly to local Frederick County charities. The 2009 beneficiaries include The Women’s Giving Circle and The Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County.

Mary, Mary quite contrary how does your city grow?
