‘The Rodney Kelley Experience’ Friday, September 29, 2017 at 7:30 pm

Carroll County Arts Council in Westminster: A Night of Jazz & Blues with ‘The Rodney Kelley Experience’ Friday, September 29, 2017 at 7:30 pm

Scheduled: Friday, September 29, 2017     7:30 pm

Cost:  $20 advance / $25 day of the show

Location: The Carroll Arts Center, 91 West Main Street, Westminster, MD, 21157

The excitement of hot jazz and blues comes to the Carroll Arts Center with The Rodney Kelley Experience. One of the hardest working bands in the Baltimore metro area, The Rodney Kelley Experience appears regularly with high energy performances at area nightclubs, festivals, and corporate events; this will be the first visit by the quintet to the Westminster area.

Playing and performing on the guitar for over 35 years, Rodney Kelley has been committed to straight ahead jazz, his mainstay, but he has been known to not only dabble in contemporary jazz, some blues but also a bit of rock (Jimi Hendrix style). Easily switching from electric to acoustic guitar, and adding vocals on occasion, multi-talented Kelley is a fan of legendary jazz artist Wes Montgomery and excitedly admits the influence of the late master guitarist on his own performances. A phenomenal performer, Kelley frequently discusses the benefits of great live performance to build and continuing to grow the audience for jazz.

In the Baltimore area, The Rodney Kelley Experience has appeared at Artscape, Gordon Center for the Performing Arts, The National Aquarium, The Heritage Art Festivals, Harborplace, The Tremont Plaza Hotel, Clyburn Arboretum, WBFF TV, The Walters Art Gallery, School 33, Club 347, and for a number of corporations such as Baltimore Gas & Electric, The FOXO Corporation, and many others.

A Night of Jazz & Blues is the third presentation by WEAA FM’s Your Girl Cheryl & YGC Productions this year at the Carroll Arts Center that also brought the annual MOTOWN & MORE: The Legacy Lives production in April and saxophonist Art Sherrod, Jr in August. The final presentation, MOTOWN & MORE: A Holiday Celebration is scheduled for early December at the Carroll Arts Center.

Following the reception at 7:30pn FLICC will present "Walden: the Ballad of Thoreau," a touching film celebrating Thoreau’s life, work and his final two days in his cabin before leaving Walden Pond.

Western Civilizations’ throw-away society had its beginnings in the Italian Renaissance when Humanist writers espoused facts that Mother Nature would constantly replenish her resources. The early 20th century Italian Futurist painter, Marinetti, wrote a manifest to the movement that applauded industrial pollution as proof that mankind was moving forward in a positive direction. Enter the 21st century and industrialized nations are looking back, not to the Italian Renaissance or industry but to those countries, while appearing primitive, have been practicing sustainable living. Rejected to Perfected will feature art and media are not purchased at the art store, whose pigment will not pollute water sources but bring awareness to the beauty and functionality that can be found in the landfill, recycle bins and dumpsters. These creative artists think out of the box. “Renew-Reuse-Recycle” is their artistic credo. In addition, there will be a few other twists such as displaying the incredible bottle cap sculpture of “Starry Night” on loan from Finksburg Public Library, and we will be selling copies of “Do Martians Recycle” by Sharon Gribbon-Lindemon.

Artists included in the show are: Kevin Dayhoff, Westminster; Sharon Gribbin-Lindemon, New Windsor; Heather Hodge, Westminster; Joy Miller, Port Deposit; Roger Miller, Taneytown; Beverly Reidinger, Myersville; Virginia Sperry, Eldersburg; and The Trashy Women Collective, Perryville

Westminster envisions creating arts district

Westminster envisions creating arts district

By: Megen Wessel, Times Staff Writer July 25, 2001

http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=2130100&BRD=1289&PAG=461&dept_id=156627&rfi=8

As the Carroll Arts Center project nears completion, Westminster officials hope to make the city more artist-friendly with possible help from newly passed legislation.

"The Carroll Arts Center is the first piece of the puzzle," said Westminster Councilman Damian Halstad, who broached the idea of an arts and entertainment district in Westminster during a City Council meeting earlier this month. "With that a reality, now would be a good time to start promoting the arts."

The legislation, signed in May by Gov. Parris N. Glendening, authorizes the secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development to designate one or more arts and entertainment districts within a county each year, a department spokeswoman said.

The measure, which the General Assembly passed on the last day of the session, followed a similar one in Providence, Rhode Island. The state law lets localities create arts and entertainment districts where a series of tax breaks apply.

In 1996, Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr. proposed legislation that later passed and provided tax exemptions on personal income tax and sales-and-use tax for artists living in the Arts and Entertainment District in the Downcity Area of Providence.

Another piece of legislation passed that same year focused on tax incentives to property owners who convert buildings formerly used for industrial or commercial use into residential units.

In the roughly 10-block-square downtown Providence district, artists can receive income tax breaks, art purchases are exempt from sales tax, and developers who create spaces for artists to live and work can avoid paying property tax on the value of the improvements for 10 years.

Maryland's bill, sponsored in the Senate by Baltimore Sen. Barbara A. Hoffman, has some provisions that go beyond the Rhode Island law.

For instance, the Maryland legislation allows a local jurisdictioion to waive entertainment taxes in designated arts districts and expand a state economic development program so it can be used to fund arts-related projects.

The arts district concept has excited interest in many parts of the state, including Bowie, Hagerstown, Cumberland, Bethesda and smaller communities along the Prince George's County and Washington, D.C., line.

Although exact number of arts districts that can be created statewide in one year has yet to be determined, the law limits the number to six, said Karen Glenn, spokeswoman for the department of business and economic development.
