If your lost cellphone says it’s at this house, it isn’t

Christina Lee and Michael Saba live in an Atlanta house where several strangers come accusing them of having stolen their phones. Strangely, the phones are never there, and it's because missing-phone apps are mysteriously routing to this home. (Jhaan Elker/The Washington Post)

For months now, angry strangers have been showing up at Christina Lee and Michael Saba's front door with a curious demand: "Give me back my stolen phone!"

Sometimes, families will show up; other times, it's groups of friends or a random person with a police officer in tow, according to Fusion. Despite using different service providers, everyone who bangs on their door has been led to the suburban Atlanta home by a phone-tracking app.

The problem — as the couple desperately tries to explain visitors — is that the missing phones aren't at the house and never have been.

They are not, in fact, thieves. Saba is an engineer; Lee is a journalist.

The pair doesn't understand why exactly, but both Android and iPhone users on various networks are being directed to their house by phone-tracking apps.
Once the awkward situation is explained, most lost-phone-seekers are understanding. But the couple told Fusion that a smaller number of people who place absolute faith in their tracking technology are convinced that the couple is lying, provoking potentially volatile conflicts.

[…]

On several occasions, Fusion reports, the problem has led to serious misunderstandings, such as an incident in which the couple briefly became suspects in a missing persons case:

In June, the police came looking for a teenage girl whose parents reported her missing. The police made Lee and Saba sit outside for more than an hour while the police decided whether they should get a warrant to search the house for the girl’s phone, and presumably, the girl. When Saba asked if he could go back inside to use the bathroom, the police wouldn’t let him.

“Your house is a crime scene and you two are persons of interest,” the officer said, according to Saba.

Comptroller Franchot Halts Returns from Baltimore Businesses amid Pattern of Questionable Filings

Comptroller Franchot Halts Returns from Baltimore Businesses amid Pattern of Questionable Filings

-Effective Immediately Pending Investigation of Several Liberty Tax Franchises-

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (January 27, 2016) – Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced that his office would suspend processing electronic tax returns from several Liberty Tax Service franchise locations in the Baltimore metropolitan area due to a high volume of questionable returns received.

The businesses, which have been sent written notice of the action, are located at: 2400 E Monument St., Baltimore; 7730 Wise Ave., Dundalk; 1742 W North Ave., Baltimore; 2401 Liberty Heights Ave., Baltimore; 1808 Pennsylvania Ave., Baltimore; 3308 Greenmount Ave., Baltimore; and 503 W Lexington St., Baltimore.

Comptroller Franchot, pursuant to the recently signed IRS Security Memorandum of Understanding ("MOU"), has shared this information with other tax agencies. The Comptroller’s Office also has advised the Office of the Attorney General and the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation of the decision, so that they can take any additional appropriate actions.

The suspicious characteristics detected on the tax returns prompting the determination included:

*Business income reported when taxpayers did not own a business.

*Refund amounts requested much higher than previous year tax returns.

*Inflated and/or undocumented business expenses.

*Dependents claimed when taxpayer did not provide required 50 percent support or care.

*Inflated wages and withholding information.

Taxpayers should carefully review their returns for these issues and should be suspicious if a preparer: deducts fees from the taxpayer’s refund to be deposited into the tax preparer’s account; does not sign the tax return; or fails to include the Preparer Taxpayer Identification number "P-TIN" on the return. If taxpayers suspect fraud, they are asked to immediately report the issue to the Comptroller's Office by calling 1-800-MD-TAXES (1-800-638-2937) or 410-260-7980 in Central Maryland or by emailing TAXHELP@comp.state.md.us.

Thoughtful nonpartisan commentary on the current 2016 presidential election.

It increasingly appears that we have a choice between several  unpleasant alternatives - We have a choice between bad and worse.

Best thoughtful non-partisan description I have heard yet about the circular firing squad that is the current state of affairs in both the Democratic and Republican presidential races… "Good gets better, bad gets worse."

Area closings and delays for this weekend.

Record amount of snow might descend on the Carroll County area today into the weekend, but the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department isn't backing down from the winter challenge.

"We're ready. Bring it on," said Richard Dell, a spokesman for the fire department.

Like other Carroll fire companies, the department has been preparing for the snow, checking its equipment and preparing its station to house firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics who will weather the storm at the station in order to make sure there will be staff available to cover emergencies. The upcoming storm, dubbed Jonas, could bring 18 to 24 inches of snow by the time it stops, according to the National Weather Service.

"We're here to take care of the people in our community, and we'll do that," Dell said.

Many of the departments are equipped with snow chains and four-wheel-drive vehicles. The Manchester department's ambulances are all four-wheel drive, and the company also has two four-wheel-drive utility vehicles, Dell said.

Fire and police departments also work with the county to make sure the roads they need to use are clear, Westminster Volunteer Fire Department spokesman Kevin Dayhoff said.

"The relationships that we have with the city and the county are invaluable," Dayhoff said.

Marylanders Urged to Continue to Stay Off Roads, Prepare for Power Outages

MARYLANDERS URGED TO CONTINUE TO STAY OFF ROADS TO HELP PLOWING CREWS, PREPARE FOR POSSIBLE POWER OUTAGES

MEMA CONTINUES TO COORDINATE RESOURCES, ASSIST LOCAL JURISDICTIONS

REISTERSTOWN, Md. (January 23, 2016) — Snow continues to fall throughout Maryland and wind gusts have picked up in some areas of the state. The Maryland Emergency Management Agency urges residents to stay off the roads so highway crews can continue plowing operations.

As of noon, power outage numbers remained relatively low in Maryland, with less than 1,500 customers without power statewide after spiking to approximately 10,000 early Saturday morning. However, as strong winds and heavy snowfall continues, residents are urged to keep cell phones, tablets and other devices charged and be prepared for possible extended power outages.

“I want to thank Marylanders for the common sense they have shown thus far,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “I want to urge people to continue to stay off of the roads unless travel is absolutely essential. It is still very dangerous out there and stalled and abandoned vehicles make it that much harder for snow plow operators. Your safety is our top priority.”

If you must drive, please stay far back from snow plows. While it may be inconvenient to be stuck behind a snow plow or a multi-unit snowplow “train,” trying to pass is dangerous and the roads in front of the plows will be snow covered.

The strong winds also could create some coastal flooding issues along the Atlantic coast and portions of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Residents are urged to follow trusted local weather forecasters to get updates on conditions in their area.

“I cannot stress enough the need to check on the welfare of relatives, friends and neighbors who are vulnerable,” said MEMA Executive Director Russ Strickland. “We still have at least 12 hours of storm conditions ahead of us. The best way to get through this is if we all work together and communicate.”

MEMA continues to coordinate the use of State resources in support of local emergency managers and first responders across the state. The Maryland National Guard is working in many counties in Maryland to help law enforcement and emergency medical personnel to respond in high-clearance vehicles.

In addition to staying off the roads and monitoring the weather and power outages, residents should take the following actions:

Keep devices charged so you will have a way to follow weather forecasts and local emergency information and be able to contact family and friends.
Be cautious shoveling snow or ice to avoid overexertion. Take frequent breaks and keep hydrated.

Avoid travel. If you must drive, make sure to have car chargers, kitty litter, or sand for traction, and extra drinks and snacks in case you get stuck in traffic. Let friends or family know of your travel route and expected arrival time.

Check on friends, neighbors, and relatives, especially the elderly or vulnerable residents who may have trouble staying warm or maneuvering on icy surfaces.

Residents living near coastal areas should be prepared to experience moderate coastal flooding and waves due to the high wind.

Know who to contact in the case of a power outage. Emergency phone numbers for utility companies can be found here: http://mema.maryland.gov/Pages/PowerOutages.aspx

Make sure pets are not exposed to the severe weather. Also remember that salt and other deicing materials can irritate their paws.

MEMA will be regularly updating their website with winter preparedness information, traffic, weather, and power outage alerts. Residents can find all of this information at mema.maryland.gov. You can also follow MEMA on Twitter @MDMEMA or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MDMEMA.
