Moving to the next chapter of the Eagle story

Westminster Eagle goes online. The last print edition of the paper was published last Wednesday, March 18, 2009.

Please follow us online at www.explorecarroll.com – I’m committed to making this work… Kevin Dayhoff

Editor's Note

Posted 3/18/09

Our big news this week -- that this week is the last print version of The Westminster Eagle, and that we're combining many of its elements into an expanded version of our countywide Carroll Eagle and concentrating on an online Westminster Eagle version -- is bittersweet for members of The Eagle staff.

After all, we've come together under The Westminster Eagle banner, and formed great bonds with the community and its leaders over the past four-and-a-half years.

But we're excited about the additional Westminster coverage we'll be able to provide with the online version of The Westminster Eagle at
www.explorecarroll.com. It will include an expanded community calendar, forums for interactive comment, breaking news, Eagle Alerts and more.

We'll have our familiar features online as well, including our columns by Hoby Wolf, Cathy Drinkwater Better and David Grand, sports coverage, local education news and more.

We're also energized over the expansion of The Carroll Eagle, our sister publication that will be growing in terms of size, distribution and content. Many of the familiar Westminster features will now be in The Carroll Eagle. You can get it delivered to your home with the Sunday edition of The Baltimore Sun. We'll also be distributing it free at key locations throughout the community, including our familiar paper boxes.

Finally, we are happy to announce that one other piece of our local coverage puzzle has also solidified -- our satellite office, at 1942 Bethel Road just off Route 140, is up and running. We have a box for residents to drop items off to us any time, and our staff now has regular office hours -- though be sure to call ahead if you plan to visit, as we're usually in the field.

Though some things are changing at The Westminster Eagle, a few key things won't.

First, our phone number is still 410-386-0334, and our staff phone extensions and e-mail addresses also remain the same.

Secondly, our mailing address is still P.O. Box 493, Westminster, MD 21158.
Most importantly, our commitment to serve the community to the best of our ability, and to share the story and history of this community, hasn't changed. Our staff is humbled by members of this community who have placed their trust in us, and we'll do our best to honor it.

We'll see you online, and in The Carroll Eagle.

“I´m eighteen And I don´t know what I want”

“I´m eighteen And I don´t know what I want”

“I’m Eighteen,” released by Alice Cooper in November 1970 on the “Love it to Death” album.

January 16, 2009

My niece just turned eighteen years old earlier in the week. Of course, my thoughts turned to when I was that age.

I saw Alice Cooper play “I’m Eighteen” in concert when I was eighteen years old in 1972 on his “Dead Babies” tour. Don’t tell my nieces and nephews.

Or was it the “School’s Out” tour? The mind is the first thing to go… Whatever.

Although I cannot say that I am a big Alice Cooper fan, the song, “I’m Eighteen” is a bit of iconography for the world of the early 1970s… I guess.

In spite of all the press, the 1972 show was just that, a show. Yeah, it was over the top, but he was quite a showman and he managed to pull it off – at least for my sensibilities at the time.

I guess I would possibly cringe to see the show today. Whatever.

It reminds me of the time a friend of mine and I were watching a documentary of “The Doors.” We were both into “The Doors” when we were young.

My friend’s kid was watching it with us and at one point, he turned to us and said, “No wonder your generation is so (messed) up.

Alice Cooper liked to play up the tabloid shock value as a marketing ploy; however, his off-stage persona was that of a really nice guy who was taking advantage of the “shock rock” and “glam rock” phenomena.

Although I have read first person accounts that reflect that the following tour, “Welcome to my nightmare” was over the top and got a little weird.

For the younger readers who are no familiar with “Alice Cooper,” his bio, “Meet Alice Cooper” explains:

“Without Alice Cooper, there might never have been the NY Dolls, KISS, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Motley Crue, Slipknot or Rob Zombie ... maybe not even David Bowie, or at least not Ziggy Stardust. The iconic hard rocker, who literally invented the concept of the rock concert as theater, returns to what he does best on Along Came a Spider (SPV Records), the 25th studio album of a long and illustrious career which began in 1969 with the release of Pretties for You on Frank Zappa's Straight label…”

In a recent published account, I read that “Alice Cooper claims he is addicted to his wife. The 60-year-old rocker - who has just released his latest album ‘Along Came a Spider’ - says he has loves spouse Sheryl Goddard so much that he has never been unfaithful to her.

“Alice said: ‘I’ve been married for 32 years and never cheated on her because I’m addicted to her.’

“The musician, who gave up drink and drugs 26 years ago after a well-documented struggle, also revealed he admires Mary Whitehouse, despite her banning the music video for his hit ‘School’s Out’.

“Alice also revealed he sent Mary - who campaigned for morality and decency on TV – flowers to thank her for her controversial decision…” (Alice Cooper addicted to wife August 7, 2008)

Oh, by the way, Alice Cooper, (Vincent Damon Furnier); was born on February 4 1948.

Yes, dear fellow boomers – he is now 60 years old.

I´m in the middle, without any plans
I´m a boy and I´m a man.

I´m eighteen
And I don´t know what I want
Eighteen
I just don´t know what I want
Eighteen
I gotta get away
Eighteen
I gotta get out of this place
I´ll go runnin´ in outer space
Oh yeah.

I got a
Baby´s brain and an old man´s heart
Took eighteen years to get this far
Don´t always know what I´m talkin´ about
Feels like I´m livin´ in the middle of doubt
Cause I´m eighteen
I get confused every day
Eighteen
I just don´t know what to say
Eighteen
I gotta get away.

Carroll County Times Newspapers In Education Fundraiser November 6 2008

Carroll County Times Newspapers In Education Fundraiser November 6 2008

Friday, October 31, 2008 by Kevin Dayhoff

I used the Newspapers in Education curriculum for a “Community Learning Center” after school program I taught for students at risk in 2007.

I taught students to collage their own newspaper by using the print editions of the Carroll County Times.

Don’t tell the students but they did not know that they were being taught remedial reading in the process.

In the past I have supported the program by donating art for the annual auction fundraiser – which this year will be held on November 6th, 2008. See below for more details.

Yesterday, I dropped off art for my contribution for this year.

For more information, call 410-857-8554 and ask for Gwen Welty and tell her that I asked you to call…

This community initiative by the Carroll County is worthy of your support:

Each year the Times holds several major fundraisers to support the NIE program. The largest is the annual Newspapers in Education Holiday Auction in the fall. Gift certificate block sales may be held throughout the year.

War driving in Nags Head NC – The Scream

War driving in Nags Head NC – The Scream
October 10 – 19, 2008
http://www.kevindayhoff.net/

I spent the week of October 10-19, 2008 in Nags Head on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in a unit that did not have internet access. To find wireless service, we had to go war driving. It was maddening.

I’m back home now – and I’m fine. Really I am. I’m told the twitching will stop soon…

“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.” Psalm 90: 1-2 NIV

July 2, 2008

On Monday, June 30, 2008 Pastor Sarah Dorrance picked up the keys to the
Taylorsville United Methodist Church.

She began her first day in the office on Tuesday, July 1, 2008.

In her message to the congregation of Taylorsville United Methodist Church on the church’s web site, she noted:

This is a time of change at Taylorsville UMC.

Rev. Stephen White is retiring as of June 30th, and Rev. Sarah B. Dorrance will begin as pastor on July 1st, 2008.

It is the wish and desire of both pastors to make this transition as smooth and seamless as possible.

Take time to celebrate what each person in this church has done. Take time to celebrate the wonderful heritage that both pastors and congregation accomplished at Taylorsville—take time to thank God for all that God has done in the life of this congregation, and all that God will do in the future!

Rev. Dorrance was in international marketing prior to going into the ministry.

She graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary with a M. Div this past May and was be commissioned as a Probationary Elder of the Baltimore-Washington Conference.

Rev. Dorrance has a passion for mission, teaching, preaching and discipleship in the local church.

She has served on the Latino Advisory Board for the Frederick District, has been an intern at Faithpoint UMC, and was instrumental in bringing her home church, Calvary UMC in Mt. Airy, to a new level of serving in the mission field.

She has also directed the youth choir at Calvary UMC for the past 10 years. Rev. Dorrance recently co-authored a book titled “Reclaiming the Wesleyan Tradition: John Wesley’s sermons for Today.”

She is very excited about receiving her first full-time appointment at Taylorsville UMC.

Taylorsville United Methodist Church, in Mt. Airy, has been serving the people of western Carroll County for more than 125 years. The average worship attendance is 79.

The church’s United Methodist Men and Women serve the community and world through outreach programs, work projects, and mission activities. Church activities also include Vacation Bible School, a mother-daughter banquet, Christmas bazaar, Bible study groups, Friday Family Game Nite, and an annual church picnic.

The congregation supports missionaries in Alaska, Turkey, China and India. Taylorsville is continuing to search for ways in which they can reach out to the community to invite people to experience God’s love through the ministry of the church.

Towson firm releases statement on partner’s death

On The Record: A business and legal blog for Maryland

February 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Below is the text of the statement released yesterday by the law firm of Royston, Mueller, McLean & Reid, where John Browning was a partner. Mr. Browning, his wife and two young sons were killed over the weekend. His 15 year-old son Nicholas has been charged with the murders.

It is a sad day for the Royston, Mueller family. We have lost our law partner, John Browning.

John Browning was more than just a law partner, he was our friend of almost 20 years.

John was a wonderful man. He and his wife, Tammy, were very much in love. Together they were caring and loving parents to their children. John was also a man of much faith. And he so much enjoyed the outdoors.

An accomplished lawyer, John counseled many businesses on a wide array of issues.

But he was also a person invested in his family and community. He led his local scout troop. He was a leader at his church.

In short, John Browning was a great man. We will all miss him very, very much.

President Bush to visit Mt. Airy

President Bush is scheduled to come to Mount Airy Friday morning to visit Calvary United Methodist Church, the White House said Wednesday.

The Associated Press reported that he would participate in a meeting and make a statement to coincide with World AIDS Day.

One of Calvary’s missions is to support an orphanage in Namibia, in Africa, for children who have lost their parents to AIDS.

20070805 Family visit to Christ Lutheran Church in Tinicum Pennsylvania

Family visit to Christ Lutheran Church in Tinicum Pennsylvania

August 5th, 2007 – September 22nd, 2007

The weekend of Sunday August 5th, 2007 a large contingent of the family traveled to attend services at the Tinicum Pennsylvania Christ Lutheran Church. This is one of the earliest family churches in the Fluck-Judd-Babylon et al family history.

This video depicts that Christ Lutheran Church is still a country church – and it shows the parsonage where Aunt Betty and Uncle Bill were born.

The web site for the church proclaims:

Our unofficial motto is “We Meet to Eat:” between Food, Fun and Fellowship groups, covered dish suppers, Games Nite, Advent Vespers, we'll grab any chance to get together over some of the best food and conversation you'll find anywhere. Sometimes we just make time and space to rest, to gain a little peace in a busy, busy world. Friendships are made, lives are changed.

“We are blessed by God with Grace, Salvation, a beautiful earth and all that we have. In response to the love that God has shown to us, we want to cheerfully help God's Kingdom here on earth by giving something back.”

Please enjoy the video.

A church that establishes an unofficial motto, “We meet to eat,” is a place in which I am comfortable.

We had a wonderful visit.

As we all grow older – discovering our roots becomes increasing important. We simply have no idea where we are going if we do not know where we’ve been.
