I'm American by Stuck Mojo

"I'm American" Lyrics:

I'm an American related to all colors of brethren, Priests and Pastors and Prophets and Reverends, Divided we fall united we stand together man, In this cultural melting pot there's nothing better than, This land of the free and the home of the brave, Populated by ancestors of immigrants and slaves who met early graves, So we could see brighter days and we could proudly praise and raise the stars and stripes as Americans

Hate me
Blame me
You can't shame me
Come and stand with me
I'm American

I'm an American born in these states united, Where racial discrimination keeps us so divided, Well we've got free speech so I won't be quiet, We got a lot of problems here man I won't deny it, But ain't another place that I'd rather be, Than in this land of great opportunity, Where we can be anything that we wanna be, So until the day I D-I-E, I stand tall as an American

*****

With "I'm American," the second video from the new album "Southern Born Killers," Stuck Mojo once again takes a stand for pride in country, self-respect and self-reliance. These themes have been a constant throughout the band's career. Following in the footsteps of the wildly successful video for "Open Season," Mojo once again takes a politically incorrect position by not being ashamed of the qualities that have made America great.

You may download the entire "Southern Born Killers" album, for free, at the band's web site StuckMojo . us.

Best played at 11… JSD will understand that…

“Teardrop” was released as a single on April 21, 1998 by “Massive Attack.” It first appeared on their album “Messanine.” I had meant to post this on the 10th anniversary of its release and was overtaken by events. I get so annoyed when work gets in the way of art.

This is DEFINITELY the last Pretty in Pink video for the time being! I wanted to experiment with using some dialogue from the film in a video, to see if it actually was possible to represent a slash subtext using the actual script. I had to be creative here, but I think it works! The song, whilst not contemporary to the film, works well as a backing track; the footage itself was built around one long, slow clip of James Spader that I'd forgotten to include in the previous videos and I desperately wanted to give a home to! Oh, one thing - there is some *strong* language in this video, because it has dialogue - consider yourself warned!

Elton John - Indian Sunset (Live in Tokyo 1971)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=eCneCYAYqQU

Music by elton john
Lyrics by bernie taupin
Available on the album madman across the water

1971

As I awoke this evening with the smell of wood smoke clinging
Like a gentle cobweb hanging upon a painted tepee
Oh I went to see my chieftain with my warlance and my woman
For he told us that the yellow moon would very soon be leaving
This I cant believe I said, I cant believe our warlords dead
Oh he would not leave the chosen ones to the buzzards and the soldiers guns

Oh great father of the iroquois ever since I was young
Ive read the writing of the smoke and breast fed on the sound of drums
Ive learned to hurl the tomahawk and ride a painted pony wild
To run the gauntlet of the sioux, to make a chieftains daughter mine

And now you ask that I should watch
The red mans race be slowly crushed
What kind of words are these to hear
From yellow dog whom white man fears

I take only what is mine lord, my pony, my squaw, and my child
I cant stay to see you die along with my tribes pride
I go to search for the yellow moon and the fathers of our sons
Where the red sun sinks in the hills of gold and the healing waters run

Trampling down the prairie rose leaving hoof tracks in the sand
Those who wish to follow me I welcome with my hands
I heard from passing renegades geronimo was dead
Hed been laying down his weapons when they filled him full of lead

Now there seems no reason why I should carry on
In this land that once was my land I cant find a home
Its lonely and its quiet and the horse soldiers are coming
And I think its time I strung my bow and ceased my senseless running
For soon Ill find the yellow moon along with my loved ones
Where the buffalos graze in clover fields without the sound of guns

And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of gold
And peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole

Richard Thompson - Pharaoh - Seattle 1990

Richard Thompson - Pharaoh lyrics

Pharaoh he sits in his tower of steel

The dogs of money all at his heel

Magicians cry, Oh Truth! Oh Real!

We're all working for the Pharaoh

A thousand eyes, a thousand ears

He feeds us all, he feeds our fears

Don't stir in your sleep tonight, my dears

We're all working for the Pharaoh

Egypt Land, Egypt Land

We're all living in Egypt land

Tell me, brother, don't you understand

We're all working for the Pharaoh

Hidden from the eye of chance

The men of shadow dance a dance

And we're all struck into a trance

We're all working for the Pharaoh

Idols rise into the sky

Pyramids soar, Sphinxes lie

Head of dog, Osiris eye

We're all working for the Pharaoh

I dig a ditch, I shape a stone

Another battlement for his throne

Another day on earth is flown

We're all working for the Pharaoh

Call it England, call it Spain

Egypt rules with the whip and chain

Moses free my people again!

We're all working for the Pharaoh

Pharaoh he sits in his tower of steel

Around his feet the princes kneel

Far beneath we shoulder the wheel

We're all working for the Pharaoh

20080503 Dog park not in Carroll County budget – but ya don’t mess around with Jim

Dog park not in Carroll County budget – but ya don’t mess around with Jim

May 7th, 2008

As if developing the Carroll County Budget is not difficult enough this year, here comes a debate and discussion about a “dog park” that is not even in the budget.

I have often wondered why newspapers print letters to the editor that state things that are not true by most accepted standards… In this case, the item was brought to the commissioners’ attention and they voted it down…

As far as the commentary as to what a paper reports upon and what it does not – that has been an item of discussion since the beginning of newspapers and that debate will continue for eons into the future.

Although I can certainly understand the writer’s frustration, writing so caustically about the paper’s sense of prioritization may very well not be a well-considered strategy.

I suggest that the writer pull out an old copy of the Jim Croce classic, “You Don't Mess Around with Jim” the next time he considers hitting the “send” button.

“You don't tug on Superman's cape/You don't spit into the wind/You don't pull the mask off the ol' Lone Ranger/And you don't mess around with Jim”

Dog park not in county budget

by Carroll County Commissioner Michael D. Zimmer

http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/articles/2008/05/03/news/opinion/letters/letters661.txt

Editor:

On April 28 the Times printed a letter to the editor containing inaccurate information regarding county funding for a dog park in our budget process.

The writer was under the mistaken impression that such an appropriation was supported by the Board of Commissioners. This is actually the direct opposite from the truth.

This was a proposal requested by our Parks and Recreation Department, but not recommended by the Budget Department in the recommended budget. Such items receive a direct appeal to the board from the department head and an up or down vote by the commissioners.

In this case when the Parks and Recreation head made his appeal I told him that I could not support such an appropriation under any circumstances and that I was not persuadable on this point.

On April 16 when the board deliberated and voted on various budget requests all three of us voted not to fund the dog park. There were a number of significant proposals from me that occurred at that meeting. As of the writing of this letter the Times has not reported on the content of this meeting.

For example the Times did not report on my suggestion that we offer tax relief during the meeting. It did not report my request to delete a future position from the County Attorney's office and cease having a designated liaison to the General Assembly from the County Attorney's office. And the Times hasn't reported that I suggested defunding the position of Planning and Development Policy Coordinator.

I don't blame the letter writer for not knowing the facts on the dog park being voted down. He's obviously using the Times as his primary news source.

Michael D. Zimmer Eldersburg The writer is a member of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners.

Dog park isn't worth the cost

http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/articles/2008/04/28/news/opinion/letters/letters665.txt

Editor:

It was with total dismay and astonishment that I read the article on the county commissioners' support of a dog park costing over $70,000.

A dog park? Talk about government being involved in every aspect of our lives.

This is further evidence that county taxes should be lowered. The commissioners obviously have more money than they know what to do with.

How about giving some of it back to the taxpayers instead of blowing it?

20080403 “Perfect Day” by Lou Reed – with Luciano Pavarotti

“Perfect Day” by Lou Reed – with Luciano Pavarotti

You made me forget myself; I thought I was someone else, someone good. Lou Reed – “Perfect Day” off the 1972 classic, “Transformer album.

(A Lou Reed lollapalooza…)

April 3, 2008

The ever-so existential “Perfect Day” by Lou Reed is one of my all time favorite songs. I was e-mailing with Saboteur (pictured below-right with Andrew Bird) earlier today and she mentioned Lou Reed – which reminded me…

And I’m a huge Luciano Pavarotti fan. So it blew me away when I came across this video of Lou Reed and Luciano Pavarotti singing “It’s a perfect day” together.

What a hoot. Please enjoy:

Lou Reed and Luciano Pavarotti Perfect Day 2001

Lou Reed & Luciano Pavarotti - Perfect Day - live at Pavarotti and friends 2001

Here’s another great version:

Okay – for the purists…

Perfect Day

Just a perfect day,

Drink sangria in the park,

And then later, when it gets dark,

We go home.

Just a perfect day,

Feed animals in the zoo

Then later, a movie, too,

And then home.

Oh it’s such a perfect day,

I’m glad I spent it with you.

Oh such a perfect day,

You just keep me hanging on,

You just keep me hanging on.

Just a perfect day,

Problems all left alone,

Weekenders on our own.

It’s such fun.

Just a perfect day,

You made me forget myself.

I thought I was someone else,

Someone good.

Oh it’s such a perfect day,

I’m glad I spent it with you.

Oh such a perfect day,

You just keep me hanging on,

You just keep me hanging on.

you’re going to reap just what you sow,

you’re going to reap just what you sow,

you’re going to reap just what you sow,

you’re going to reap just what you sow...

Perfect Day

Danish indietronica artist Tone - Sofie Nielsen releases her new album, "Small Arm of Sea", under a Creative Commons license.

Hat Tip: News Grist - Copy our records for your friends, please!

News Grist is carrying a great story about Danish indietronica artist Tone - Sofie Nielsen releases her new album, "Small Arm of Sea", under a Creative Commons license.

The release of the album is causing quite a stir for several reasons, not to overlook that indietronica artist Sofie Nielson is sensational...

However, additionally, according to a January 16, 2008 press release, called to our attention courtesy of News Grist: “Consumers are free to copy and redistribute the album legally – and are encouraged to do so by the record label.”

There (finally) seems to be a growing trend to ditch DRM (Digital "Rights" Management) in favor of new business models and perhaps even new licensing practices in the music industry that are more in tune with the culture and technologies at large (file-sharing, etc.) -- read about Radiohead and their decision to release In Rainbows on a pay-what-you-wish basis -- or free -- download. Of course, these decisions are being initiated by the artists not their labels...

via Henrik Moltke's Blog:

Tone: Please copy my CD (You won' t get in trouble, promise!)

This is big. On january 21st, the extremely charming Aalborg-based indietronica artist Tone (Sofie Nielsen) releases her new album, "Small Arm of Sea", under a Creative Commons license.

Her label, Urlyd, says Copy our records for your friends, please! and the danish collecting society KODA backs the release, making sure commercial uses are covered by the usual compensation scheme. This is historic, and I am extremely pleased to see this happen for the first time in Denmark.

Oh, and did I mention - Tone's music is GREAT. […]

PRESS RELEASE for immediate release

Wednesday, January 16 2008

DANISH LABEL: PLEASE COPY OUR RECORDS FOR ALL YOUR FRIENDS!

Danish label Urlyd announces the release of the world's first Creative Commons-licensed physical music album, backed by Danish copyright collecting agency KODA. Consumers are free to copy and redistribute the album legally – and are encouraged to do so by the record label. "In the past allowing your fans to share your music meant waving goodbye to an important revenue stream for the artist. URLYD is the first label to offer the artist and fan the best of both worlds" say the founders.

We're all familiar with the classic "All Rights Reserved" notice in books, music and film recordings stating that copying is prohibited. Yet today, sharing a musical work is easier than making a phone call. Illegal filesharing of copyrighted works has been a major concern for record labels and publishers since the advent of Napster. "Music wants to be free", computer-savvy teenagers argue. Now an alternative path that is both legal and free is emerging – from the music industry itself - in the shape of a small Danish independent record label, Urlyd which uses the Creative Commons licensing system. On Monday, January 21, 2008, the labels' first release, Small Arm of Sea by female indietronica singer, songwriter and producer Tone, will be available for purchase in Danish record stores. With her abstracts beats, unique voice and hypnotizing lyrics, Tone makes her debut after little more than a year spent lurking in Denmark's musical underground and on MySpace. Printed on the CDs and vinyls are the words "Copy this album for your friends, please!". We really mean this. On the same day the album will be available for download – freely, at no charge and without Digital Rights Management (DRM) – at the record label's website, urlyd.com. Anyone can download it for free or pick up the album in-store.

"Music connects directly with feelings, things you experience. We believe music in best when shared and this perfectly natural behavior should be encouraged, not criminalized", say the founders of Urlyd, Christian Villum and Sune Petersen. "We cannot tell music lovers how or whether to support the artist, so we give them the choice between donating online, going to a live performance or purchasing the album in-store where it is sold as a limited edition. We believe this positive approach will benefit both artists and consumers.”

Innovative audiovisual album format

Urlyd launches a new audiovisual format combining traditional CD/LP with the DVD format – at regular CD price. In collaboration with Danish VJ and video artist Kristian Ravn-Ellestad, Tone (Sofie Nielsen) unites music and video intro a mesmerizing audiovisual experience – an important element of Tone's live performances.

Creative Commons and KODA

Until recently the use of Creative Commons licenses was incompatible with services provided by collecting societies such as KODA (KODA administers Danish and international copyrights for composers, songwriters and music publishers when their musical works are performed in public). If a singer, musician, publisher, or producer wanted to distribute her work for free online under a Creative Commons license, she was forced to give up the right to receive compensation through royalties collected by the collecting agency. As a consequence, mostly bands without a recording contract and outside of the collective rights management have used the Creative Commons model. "The novelty here is that our artists can collect commercial royalties through the traditional model while fully using the potential of the internet - giving fans the freedom to do what they ultimately do best."

WJZ TV: Taneytown votes down immigration resolution

January 14, 2008

On Monday, January 14, 2008, the Taneytown (Maryland) City Council voted down by a 3 – 2 vote a resolution introduced on December 5, 2007, declaring Taneytown to NOT be a sanctuary city.

WJZ TV, Channel 13 in Baltimore, had the best video coverage.

I touched upon the Taneytown immigration debate in my 20080118 Westminster Eagle column: Dr. Martin Luther King's enduring words

Often, when I consider the immigration discussions in Taneytown, I think of Marianne Faithfull’s “Say it in Broken English.” (I had the opportunity to see Marianne Faithful in Fells Point – quite a number of years ago and it sounded more like this.)

Immigration Gumballs

This clip from the longer video, Immigration by the Numbers, features Roy Beck demonstrating the catastrophe of the huge numbers of both legal and illegal immigration by Third World people into the modern nations. He uses standard statistics and simple gumballs to show this disaster in the making.

Ozzy brings us this week’s Thank Goodness It’s Friday

January 11, 2008

It’s been a long week. Turn up the volume and settle back and enjoy. Whatever inference to current events may very well be up to your imagination… “Your lips are so cold I don’t what else to say.”

Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears

Oh what the heck. A big thanks to Don Surber.

The light from Obama is a jolt of despair
He’s the first black candidate who has a prayer
Your levee of tears taught the people you might not come back
The Audacious Hope will bring another attack.

Your Billy told you that you’re not supposed to lose to strangers
Look in the mirror tell me do you think your life’s in danger here?
No more tears

Another vote passes and you lost big time
The deadline approacheth and you’re falling behind
You see Barack is gaining, will you lose the presidency?
You close your eyes as the pressure rises and you run out of money
No more tears

So now is it over? Will we just say good-bye?
I’d like to move on and make the most of the night
Maybe the Senate is not so bad a place
Your lips are so cold, what can you do to save face?
I never wanted it to end this way, before November
Believe me when I say the lesson is one to remember:
No more tears

Now play this and go back to work.
