Bangkok firefighters on front line of city's snake scourge
No thanks, I think I’ll pass - - Bangkok firefighters on
front line of city's snake scourge
By TASSANEE VEJPONGSA, ASSOCIATED PRESS BANGKOK — Nov 14,
2017, 11:15 PM ET
When the latest distress call came into Phinyo Pukphinyo's
fire station in Bangkok, it was not about a burning home or office building.
Instead, the caller needed urgent help with a far more common problem facing
Thailand's capital: snakes.
A 2-meter (10-foot) -long python was dangling from the
caller's garage roof, and after rushing to the scene, it took Phinyo less than
a minute to remove the slithering reptile.

FIRE DEPARTMENT PARAMEDIC KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
Passing along news from Chief Billy &
FireFighterCloseCalls.
I am sure details will follow. Our thoughts and prayers are
with our brothers & sisters in Belair tonight.
FIRE DEPARTMENT PARAMEDIC KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY-UNUSUAL
STRUCK BY APPARATUS AT SCENE
Tuesday, January 6, 2015 - We regret to pass on to you some
tragic news from Maryland. At 1350 hrs TODAY (16/6.2015) the Bel Air Volunteer
Fire Company (Harford Co, MD) was alerted for a motor vehicle collision with
injury on Patterson Mill Rd.
It was reported that a vehicle had run off the
roadway into an embankment and the injured subject was in a nearby residence.
On the fire departments arrival it was determined that the best access to the
patient was via four wheel drive assist due to the extreme weather and driveway
conditions. Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company Utility 373, a 2014 Chevrolet
Silverado 3500HD equipped with a snow plow responded for the four wheel drive
request.
As the utility vehicle proceeded down the driveway it began to slide.
At some point during the slide, a member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company,
a paramedic provider, was struck by the utility. He was treated at the scene
and transported in grave condition to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where he
later succumbed to his injuries. Indications point to weather being a major
factor in this incident. More to follow. Our condolences to all affected. RIP.

Last month, it was reported that solar panels can be “dangerous in an emergency.” Firefighters have been forced to stop fighting a fire due to electrocution concerns. The report quotes Northampton, MA, Fire Chief Brian Duggan as saying electrocution is not their only concern: “cutting through the roof for ventilation would also take a lot longer.” Springfield fire commissioner Joe Conant says: “nothing will stop them if there’s a life to be saved, but if it’s simply to save the structure, solar panels may keep them from going on the roof.

A Fox News story on the risk solar panels pose to fire-fighters states: “Two recent fires involving structures decked with solar panels have triggered complaints from fire chiefs and calls for new codes and regulations that reflect the dangers posed by the clean-energy devices. A two-alarm fire last week at a home in Piedmont, Calif., prompted Piedmont Fire Chief Warren McLaren to say the technology ‘absolutely’ made it harder on firefighters. Weeks earlier, in Delanco, NJ, more than 7,000 solar panels on the roof of a massive 300,000-square foot warehouse factored into Delanco Fire Chief Ron Holt’s refusal to send his firefighters onto the roof of a Dietz & Watson facility.”
In part, due to the increased fire concerns, roof-top solar panels can increase the cost of homeowners insurance

BLOXOM -- A single-vehicle crash involving a Bloxom
firetruck Monday morning fatally injured a volunteer firefighter.
David R. Chew Jr., 30, of Parksley, who worked as a medic
with the Northampton County Department of Emergency Medical Services, died in
the crash.
The accident occurred on Nelsonia Road, about a half-mile
west of Route 13. The firefighters were responding to an accident on Route 13
in Gargatha.
The accident was reported at about 11:31 a.m. An
investigation revealed that Chew, a passenger in the firetruck, was ejected,
said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya.
"Mr. Chew was not wearing his safety belt at the time
of the accident and died on impact," Anaya said in a statement…
Chew, a United Methodist minister, served as chaplain of the
Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company and was a rescue lieutenant and a member of the
company's board of directors…

Firefighters from all across Carroll County gathered at the Haight Funeral Home in Sykesville on Sunday to celebrate the life of Calvin Warren Brothers, 79, of Finksburg, who died Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.
The service was conducted by the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association Chaplain, Deacon Charles Barnhart, of whom many emergency services personnel turn to in times of trouble or grief in Carroll County.
Barnhart began the service by saying, “My friends, we have gathered here to praise God and to witness our faith as we celebrate the life of Calvin Brothers. We come together in grief, acknowledging our human loss. May God grant us grace, that in pain we may find comfort, in sorrow hope, in death resurrection.”
Brothers wore many different hats in the greater Carroll County community and many folks knew him well by his steadfast community leadership in the many responsibilities he took upon himself. The one common thread is that he did everything well and no matter how difficult the task, he was always a good friend to everyone.
He was born February 2, 1932 in Finksburg, and was the son of the late Ernest Claude and Amelia I. Ward Brothers. He was the husband of the late Carol Ann Baumes Brothers, who died in 2010.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, who served in Korea. He was a member of the Westminster VFW, Westminster Moose, and the Westminster American Legion.
He worked for many years for Luther L. Brothers Builders and later as the Chief Building Inspector for Carroll County.
Others knew him well as a volunteer with Carroll County 4H and FFA programs where he once served as the Chair of the Board for the Carroll County 4H and FFA Fair.
Folks gathered Sunday evening to celebrate Brothers’ service to our community as a volunteer firefighter. In May 1964, after several devastating fires in the Gamber area of Carroll County, the Gamber and Community Fire Company was organized. According to an old newspaper article, “Two months after the company established itself, Calvin Brothers joined up. His uncle, a member, recruited him. ‘Between 1965 and 1975, this was a very small company,’ he said. ‘It didn't seem like we were going to go too far.’”
But through the hard work of Brothers and countless other community leaders, the upstart fire company has gone far over the years.
“By 1965, the company purchased land and a building at the intersection of Md. 32 and Md. 91, and ordered the first piece of fire equipment…”
Here, Barnhart picked-up the story of Brothers’ work for our community at his memorial service. Brothers “gave his volunteer spirit for 46 years.” He was the company president for a total of eleven-years in five different decades.
Over the years, in addition to serving as a delegate to the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, and member of numerous committees, he also served as Gamber fire chief, first vice-president for four years, second vice-president for three years, and a member of the board of directors for an additional four years.
He also served as president of the county firefighters’ association from 1992-1993 and was elected to the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame in 1990.
Barnhart spoke for many when he said, “There is so much to share about Calvin’s dedication to” the Gamber volunteer fire company. “His personality and devotion will never be forgotten. In every role, Calvin touched your lives with charm and wit, with courage and hope, with kindness and love. And I’m sure that it was a great reunion at the heavenly gate when Calvin arrived this past Wednesday…
“Calvin became for all, the model of what it means to be an honest hard working sensitive adult. And now, as long as you live in the memory of his witness and faith, he will always live through you…
“We have been blessed with various gifts of service. We give thanks for the life of Calvin W. Brothers and say thank you for his 46 years of service to the Gamber and Community Volunteer Fire Company and the Gamber community. We are grateful for his time and commitment for the betterment of others.”
According to attribute ob the fire company website by Gamber fire company treasurer Clay Myers, Brothers was the husband of Carol Ann Brothers who died in 2010. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Jen and Chad Dean of Odenton, sons and daughter-in-law Rick Bartels of Glen Burnie, and John and Alisha Bartels of Gamber.
Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law Robert Brothers of Gamber, Luther L. and Eva M. Brothers of Gamber, and Carl Melvin and Bonnie Brothers of Traverse City, MI, sister Joan Gist of Gamber, and grandchildren Kera Jefcoat, Kaitlyn Crabtree, Tyler Bartels and Olivia Hope Bartels, and great grandson Layton Jefcoat.
He was predeceased by his sisters Grace Shipley, Jeanette Robertson, Marietta Clark, and Amelia Sue Green, his brother-in-law Richard Gist, and his grandson John Eric Bartels.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 2, 2012, at 10:00 am at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel with Deacon Charles Barnhart officiating. Interment was at the Providence Cemetery, Gamber.
Donations in the honor of the memory of Brothers may be made to the Gamber and Community Fire Department, 3939 Niner Rd., Finksburg, MD 21048.
Online condolences may be offered at www.haightfuneralhome.com

CLINTON, Md. - Three firefighters based in Clinton, Md. had to bend way down, today, to get hugs from a five-year-old girl. Christina Luckett also handed each a framed 'thank you' note with her photograph and about 20 signatures from her family members.
November 21st was a bad day for Christina. She suffers from asthma, and her breathing was so labored, that evening, that her grandmother called 911.
It is standard operating procedure in Prince George's County, Maryland, and elsewhere, to dispatch both a fire truck and an ambulance. The pumper trucks usually arrive first, since there are many more of them than ambulances. All three firefighters aboard the pumper had received certification of some kind in life-saving skills, although the first aid kit on a fire truck has only minimal equipment.
A recording of the initial 911 call shows how serious the situation was. The dispatcher asked the girl's grandmother, Aleighta Hughes, "IS SHE BREATHING?" Hughes paused before answering, "She's having a hard time. She's struggling."
Moments after the firefighters arrived, Christina went completely limp and stopped breathing altogether.
In this kind of situation, firefighters are trained to perform CPR, but await the arrival of an ambulance...

Part of the Firefighters Prayer goes like this: Give me the strength to save some life Whatever be its age. Two firefighters in Westminster have likely said that prayer and many others to make it through 50 years of working to save lives and property. They were honored in a laughter- and memory-filled event covered by Westminster Patch.
The Firefighter's PrayerWhen I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage,Give me the strength to save some lifeWhatever be its age.Help me to embrace a little childBefore it is too late,Or some older person fromthe horror of that fate.Enable me to be alertAnd hear the weakest shout,And quickly and efficientlyto put the fire out.I want to fill my calling and give the best in me…To guard my every neighborAnd protect their property. And if according to Your willI have to lose my life,Please bless with Your protecting handMy children and my wife.

Fred Plunkert and Doug Geouge have likely said this prayer, or one like it, too many times to count in their fire fighting careers.
