Says more abt FCPS than Nash: Nash loses FCPS social media job wk after being in Twitter spotlight

My bar of amazement has been moved. This is nuts. Says more about FCPS than Katie Nash.

Katie and I wrote for the same magazine many years ago. I do not know her well, but what I do know leads me to believe that she is an exceptional person. This situation really-really casts the FCPS in an unflattering light. It is mickey-mouse crap like this that promotes a perception that the best and the brightest need not apply for work with local government. I know many of the best and the brightest in local government and privately they struggle with the byzantine intrigues and indecipherable lack of common sense that has become "local government."

……

I also run several social media sites for some high visibility and high profile organizations in the community. We all know the perils of unintended consequences. We all know to stay as clear as possible from a tweet or a post that could possibly be misunderstood. All my inquiries indicate that no one was offended, including the student. It opened a great, if not fun, dialogue, And if the powers to be found the post inconsistent with established standards, then use it as a teaching moment and move on. The folks I work for have taken down posts before. Whatever. Katie does not have mean bone in her body. I know full well that adjectives are not persuasive speech - but "Surreal," is the best adjective I have seen in this discussion yet. I think this says more about FCPS than it does about Katie. Thank you.

Frederick County Public Schools has fired Katie Nash, an employee who stirred up attention for how she ran the district’s Twitter feed last week, she said.

Michael Doerrer, a district spokesman, said Nash was no longer employed with the school system, but he couldn’t comment on the circumstances.

Nash started working as the web experience coordinator in November. Among her responsibilities was to run the district’s social media accounts. Her salary was $44,066.

On Jan. 5, a student tweeted to the Twitter account, @FCPSMaryland, asking schools to close “tammarow.”

Nash wrote in response from the school Twitter feed: “But then how would you learn how to spell ‘tomorrow?’ :)”

The response from Nash’s FCPS tweet garnered more than 1,000 retweets and 1,000 likes and she became the subject of a hashtag, #KatiefromFCPS. And later #freekatie also appeared in students’ Twitter feeds after a report from local TV station WHAG-TV that Twitter access had been taken away from her.

I sat down with Republican alderman candidate Katie Nash recently to discuss her campaign. Katie finished second in the Republican primary and interestingly, received 145 less votes than alderman candidate Derek Shackelford, who finished sixth in the Democratic primary and did not advance to the general election.

Katie told me it was a year ago she decided to run for alderman and that she decided to run because she wanted to see a nonpartisan city election because she feels issues at the local level are nonpartisan.

She told me she grew up in Baltimore County and graduated from Hood College, where she also received her MBA in 2008. For, the past three years, she has worked for a defense contractor, located in Frederick, as a program manager.

Washington Post: Millions more workers will be eligible for overtime pay under new federal rule

Washington Post: Millions more workers will be eligible for overtime pay under new federal rule

Labor Secretary Thomas Perez and President Obama will announce a new rule Wednesday that will expand the number of workers eligible for overtime pay. (Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg)

The Obama administration unveiled a new rule Wednesday that will make millions of middle-income workers eligible for overtime pay, a move that delivers a long-sought victory for labor groups.

The regulations, which were last updated more than a decade ago, would let full-time salaried employees earn overtime if they make up to $47,476 a year, more than double the current threshold of $23,660 a year. The Labor Department estimates that the rule would boost the pay of 4.2 million additional workers.

The change is scheduled to take effect Dec. 1.

The move caps a long-running effort by the Obama administration to aid low- and middle-income workers whose paychecks have not budged much in the last few decades, even as the top earners in America have seen their compensation soar. The last update to the rules came in 2004, and Wednesday’s announcement is the third update to the salary threshold for overtime regulations in 40 years.

“Along with health care reform, this is one of the most important measures that the Obama administration has implemented to help middle-wage workers,” said Jared Bernstein, a former chief economist for Vice President Biden and a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

The Obama administration will unveil a new rule that would make millions of middle-income workers eligible for overtime pay. Here's what you need to know about it. (Monica Akhtar/The Washington Post)

About 35 percent of full-time salaried employees will be eligible for time and a half when they work extra hours under the new rule, up significantly from the 7 percent who qualify under the current threshold, according to the Labor Department.

The shift was swiftly criticized by small business owners, nonprofit groups, and universities that say they may have to switch some salaried workers to hourly positions to afford the new threshold. And instead of seeing bigger paychecks, some salaried workers may be assigned fewer hours, they said.

“For many of these types of employees they’re going to be viewing it as a demotion,” said David French, senior vice president of government relations for the National Retail Federation. “They’re going to have to clock in and clock out. They’re no longer going to have flexibility at work.”

People keep going to this home looking for their lost phones — and nobody knows why

People keep going to this home looking for their lost phones — and nobody knows why People keep going to this home looking for their lost phones — and nobody knows why http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2016/01/people-keep-going-to-this-home-looking.html
If your lost cellphone says it’s at this house, it isn’t

Christina Lee and Michael Saba live in an Atlanta house where several strangers come accusing them of having stolen their phones. Strangely, the phones are never there, and it's because missing-phone apps are mysteriously routing to this home. (Jhaan Elker/The Washington Post)

For months now, angry strangers have been showing up at Christina Lee and Michael Saba's front door with a curious demand: "Give me back my stolen phone!"

Sometimes, families will show up; other times, it's groups of friends or a random person with a police officer in tow, according to Fusion. Despite using different service providers, everyone who bangs on their door has been led to the suburban Atlanta home by a phone-tracking app.

The problem — as the couple desperately tries to explain visitors — is that the missing phones aren't at the house and never have been.

They are not, in fact, thieves. Saba is an engineer; Lee is a journalist.

The pair doesn't understand why exactly, but both Android and iPhone users on various networks are being directed to their house by phone-tracking apps.
Once the awkward situation is explained, most lost-phone-seekers are understanding. But the couple told Fusion that a smaller number of people who place absolute faith in their tracking technology are convinced that the couple is lying, provoking potentially volatile conflicts.

[…]

On several occasions, Fusion reports, the problem has led to serious misunderstandings, such as an incident in which the couple briefly became suspects in a missing persons case:

In June, the police came looking for a teenage girl whose parents reported her missing. The police made Lee and Saba sit outside for more than an hour while the police decided whether they should get a warrant to search the house for the girl’s phone, and presumably, the girl. When Saba asked if he could go back inside to use the bathroom, the police wouldn’t let him.

“Your house is a crime scene and you two are persons of interest,” the officer said, according to Saba.

Honestly, you cannot make this up – Baltimore Sun story by Luke Broadwater: “Baltimore mayor, other city elected officials to get raises”

“Baltimore mayor, other city elected officials to get raises”
Baltimore Sun story by Luke Broadwater December 22, 2015

“The paychecks of Baltimore's elected officials — including Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young and Comptroller Joan M. Pratt — are about to get bigger.

On Wednesday, the city's Board of Estimates, which includes those three officials, is set to approve pay raises for themselves and the members of the City Council.

Rawlings-Blake's salary is set to go from $167,000 to $171,000. Young and Pratt's pay is set to increase from $110,000 to $113,000.

According to a city law passed in 2007, the elected officials are entitled to a 2.5 percent raise if some city workers also get a raise in that year's budget. The raises go into effect Jan. 1.

Howard Libit, a spokesman for the mayor, said she plans to abstain from voting on her raise. He said officials are voting on the raises in public to be "fully transparent and disclose what's happening."

The Economist, “A passenger revolt against squashed legroom,”

September 18, 2015 KED

Some of the most miserable moments of my life while traveling have been flying for hours with the seat in front of me reclined in my face, and cutting off the circulation in my legs.

Flying today is a horrific experience – one of the easiest things the airlines could do to make the consumer experience a little more tolerable is to stop putting in seats in the aircraft that recline.

I have no idea whatsoever why the airlines have not addressed the matter – unless, you are proponent of the idea that airlines simply do not care. It is a persuasive argument.

As I wrote on August 31, 2014, http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2014/08/flight-diverted-when-passengers-feud.html, “I think that people who recline their seat into the face of the person seated behind them on an airplane are narcissistic sociopaths.” [https://www.facebook.com/kevindayhoff/posts/10203430956388172

I cannot imagine any other circumstance in which it is considered permissible in society to intrude so far into another person’s personal space and make them physically uncomfortable and not ask even as much as ask permission or express any concern for the injured party.

On August 31, 2014, I wrote about this in response to an article on NPR about one of the many planes that have had to land early as a result of disruption on the plane caused by reclining seats: Flight Diverted When Passengers Feud Over Reclining Seat : The Two-Way : NPR – the link is still good, click here: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/08/26/343439537/flight-diverted-when-passengers-feud-over-reclining-seat?utm_source=npr_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20140831&utm_campaign=mostemailed&utm_term=nprnews#sthash.lYKx50Ec.dpuf

“Flying is already a pain. But a story from the Associated Press Tuesday really brings home the point: The wire service reports that an entire plane was diverted on Sunday after a fight broke out over a passenger's right to recline her seat…”

The latest article about the problem comes from The Economist, “A passenger revolt against squashed legroom,” Sep 11th 2015, 10:25 BY A.W. | WASHINGTON, DC

Of the litany of annoyances pestering air travellers these days—the invasive security protocols, the baggage fees, the cancellations and delays—perhaps none ranks higher than the Incredible Shrinking Airplane Seat. Legroom seems to vanish with each passing flight. The marginally roomier exit-row seats now cost extra; so do the seats where spaciousness was until recently considered normal but now earns the label “premium economy.”

“Aeroplane designers recently took their efforts to pack passengers in like sardines to a whole new level, with a proposal to squeeze in more seats by facing half of them backwards.

“It’s enough to make you—well, sign a petition. As of September 9th, more than 31,000 people had done so…” Read much more here: http://www.economist.com/blogs/gulliver/2015/09/airline-seats-1?fsrc=scn/tw/te/bl/ed/airlineseats

I wrote on August 31, 2014, As if flying is not already unpleasant enough.... At 6' 3" I am constantly fighting this battle - the battle over the person in front of me on a plane reclining their seat into my knees and my face so that I cannot use the work tray, 'enjoy' my seat - or breathe...

In the past, after observing my plight, the flight attendant, without me asking, has required the person in front of me to put their seat in the upright position.

I too, have very-very politely asked the person on front of me to put their seat in the upright position and had that person absolutely refuse. At that point I usually "Zen it." politely and quietly.

I think that people who recline their seat into the face of the person seated behind them on an airplane are narcissistic sociopaths. Usually when it happens to me, I realize that I have been just given a signal that the person in front of me is aggressively rude and impolite and that I should be frightened of them. All I want to do is get to my destination. I usually simply avoid any interaction with them - at all costs.

Ultimately I agree with the commenters on the article that believe that it is the fault of the airlines. I am surprised that the planes are still built with reclining seats.

Reclining seats have caused so many problems on these planes that inhumanely pack people into impossible seating arrangements that I have no idea why reclining seat have not been banned...

All that said, I usually just grin and bear it when faced with such incivility.

Nowadays, I understand that flying is very unpleasant and I work hard to make the best of it. I just wanna get home - and not make an already very bad situation worse... http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2014/08/flight-diverted-when-passengers-feud.html

THE NIGHT WATCHMAN: Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert.

From an e-mail.... Nevertheless, it tells a compelling story:

THE NIGHT WATCHMAN

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert.

Congress said, "Someone may steal from it at night." So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job.

Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without instruction?"

So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies.

Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?"

So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One was to do the studies and one was to write the reports.

Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?"

So they created two positions: a time keeper and a payroll officer then hired two people.

Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?"

So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary.

Then Congress said, "We have had this command in operation for one year and we are $918,000 over budget, we must cut back."
So they laid-off the night watchman.

NOW slowly, let it sink in.

Quietly, we go like sheep to slaughter. Does anybody remember the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY during the Carter administration?

Anybody?

Anything?

No?

Didn't think so!

Bottom line is, we've spent several hundred billion (BILLION with a B) dollars in support of an agency, the reason for which very few people who read this can remember!

Ready??

It was very simple... and at the time, everybody thought it very appropriate.

The Department of Energy was instituted on 8/04/1977, TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

Hey, pretty efficient, huh?

AND NOW IT'S 2015 -- 38 YEARS LATER -- AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS "NECESSARY" DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR. IT HAS 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES; AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT HAS DONE!

(THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?")
38 years ago 30% of our oil consumption was foreign imports. Today 70% of our oil consumption is foreign imports.

Ah, yes -- good old Federal bureaucracy.

NOW, WE HAVE TURNED OVER THE BANKING SYSTEM, HEALTH CARE, AND THE AUTO INDUSTRY TO THE SAME GOVERNMENT?

Hello!! Anybody Home?

Signed....The Night Watchman

Mikulski, Cardin Lead Maryland Delegation in Requesting Major Disaster Declaration for Baltimore

Mikulski, Cardin Lead Maryland Delegation in Requesting Major Disaster Declaration for Baltimore

May 27, 2015

Delegation asks President Obama to support Governor Hogan’s request for a major disaster declaration as Baltimore recovers from recent unrest

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.) were joined by members of Maryland’s Congressional Delegation today in sending a letter to President Barack Obama supporting Governor Hogan’s request for a declaration of a major disaster for Baltimore following recent unrest in the city. If awarded, Maryland will become eligible for federal disaster recovery dollars through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), ensuring the state’s already strained budget is not stretched any thinner. The letter was signed by Senators Mikulski and Cardin, as well as U.S. Representatives Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.), Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.), John P. Sarbanes (D-Md.), Donna F. Edwards (D-Md.) and John Delaney (D-Md.).

“Following the tragic death of Freddie Gray, citizens of Baltimore reacted with outrage in their demands for truth and their demands for justice,” the Members wrote. “For seven days, from April 25, 2015 through May 1, 2015, the City of Baltimore experienced civil unrest... Maryland and its local jurisdictions have contributed a vast amount of resources, which will continue to have economic impacts around our state. A Major Disaster declaration is necessary to help provide the resources needed by all.”

The full text of the delegation’s letter of support is as follows:

May 26, 2015

The President
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

We are writing to express our strong support for Governor Hogan’s May 21, 2015 request for a Major Disaster declaration for the City of Baltimore. Given the massive impact that the situation in Baltimore is having on the state’s resources, we respectfully request that you urgently approve Federal assistance.

Following the tragic death of Freddie Gray, citizens of Baltimore reacted with outrage in their demands for truth and their demands for justice. For seven days, from April 25, 2015 through May 1, 2015, the City of Baltimore experienced civil unrest. The boiling emotions of a small fraction of Baltimoreans turned into violence and vandalism to homes and businesses that the vast majority of Baltimore’s citizens have been working to rebuild and restore.

Governor Hogan took appropriate action under State law and directed the execution of the State Response Operations Plan in accordance with Section 401 of the Stafford Act. In addition, the Governor issued an Executive Order declaring that a State of Emergency existed and activated the Maryland National Guard to State service. The Governor has certified that additional Federal assistance is needed. The Governor has provided the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with a preliminary damage assessment of over $19 million in expenditures for local jurisdiction law enforcement, security, firefighting, and emergency management costs as well as out-of-state resources required to supplement local and state resources. This Major Disaster declaration is necessary to address emergency protective measures and public buildings and contents per Category B & E of Public Assistance under the Stafford Act. This situation has the potential to negatively impact services in other areas, given an already strained state budget environment.

Maryland and its local jurisdictions have contributed a vast amount of resources, which will continue to have economic impacts around our state. A Major Disaster declaration is necessary to help provide the resources needed by all.  We appreciate your consideration of Maryland’s request, and look forward to continue working with you in this recovery.

Driver Wanted for Obama Motorcade. Novice Welcome.

By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDTDEC. 25, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO — Shortly after President Obama landed here one fall day for fund-raisers, his motorcade pulled out of the airport and raced at 80 miles per hour down an empty freeway to his hotel in the city.

At the front of the procession were bulletproof black sport utility vehicles and limousines driven by Secret Service agents who had spent hundreds of hours learning how to maneuver at high speeds.

Bringing up the rear were police cars with their lights flashing and a Secret Service ambulance that follows the president wherever he travels.

And in between were several vans filled with White House staff members and journalists, being piloted by volunteers like Natalie Tyson, a 24-year-old Bay Area graduate student wearing fluorescent orange sunglasses.

“Wow,” she exclaimed as she hit the gas and the van lurched within a few feet of the one in front of it. Then she slammed on the brake.

Then she hit the gas again.

 “Sorry about that,” she said.

She returned her hands to the textbook 2-and-10 positions on the steering wheel.

Hillary Clinton speaking demands.:

A List of Hillary Clinton’s Demands to Accept $300,000 for a University Speech

By Daniel Politi

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2014/11/27/hillary_clinton_speaking_demands.html

"The Washington Post used a Freedom of Information Act request to get an inside look at just what it takes to get Hillary Clinton to come speak at your university. First of all, there’s the matter of cash: a cool $300,000, which is apparently the “special university rate.” That is the answer UCLA received when it asked whether the public university could get some sort of discount.

Undeterred by the price tag, the university moved forward with booking the former secretary of state.

[...]

But in a clear example of how carefully Clinton’s people stage-manage her appearances, they asked that the medal be presented in a box rather than draped around her neck. Other demands included:" ... http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2014/11/27/hillary_clinton_speaking_demands.html

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.:) GOP won the Senate because of racist Southerners

Democratic Congressman: GOP won the Senate because of racist Southerners Posted on November 5, 2014 by Sam Rolley

According to Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), the GOP’s senatorial gains in the 2014 midterms have nothing to do with voter frustration at President Barack Obama or failed policies from his party. Republicans won, Rangel contends, because Americans are racist.

Last week, Rangel claimed that Southern Republicans still believe in slavery and think the Confederates won the Civil War. That, he said, is why voters in the South would reject progressive Democratic candidates.

According to the lawmaker, voter ID laws and other GOP causes relate directly to lingering Southern racism.

Rangel had said during a Democratic campaign rally in New York: “We have to win, and we’re going to be able to send a national message. … And the thing is, everything we believe in, everything we believe in they hate! They don’t disagree, they hate! ... http://personalliberty.com/democratic-congressman-gop-won-senate-racist-southerners/

As Two Men Go Free, a Dogged Ex-Prosecutor Digs In - NYTimes.com:

NYT: In Lumberton NC – “As Two Men Go Free, a Dogged
Ex-Prosecutor Digs In” By RICHARD A. OPPEL Jr. SEPT. 7, 2014

LUMBERTON, N.C. — The most memorable moment of the trial
that put Henry McCollum and Leon Brown behind bars for three decades for a
hideous 1983 rape and murder was a display of brilliant courtroom theatrics.
District Attorney Joe Freeman Britt of Robeson County, who
stood 6-foot-6 and came to be known as America’s “Deadliest D.A.,” asked jurors
to try to hold their breath for five minutes — the time it took the 11-year-old
victim to choke to death, after her killer stuffed her panties down her throat
with a stick — to get a small sense of the horror she experienced.

The jury came back with two of the more than 40 death
penalty convictions Mr. Britt won over almost two decades.

Those two convictions were obtained on the basis of
inconsistent, soon recanted, confessions from two mentally impaired teenagers
who said they had been coerced to sign statements written by interrogators, and
testimony by an informer who previously did not implicate the two. They were
overturned last week, and Mr. McCollum and Mr. Brown were exonerated and set
free.

"Flying is already a pain. But a story from the Associated Press Tuesday really brings home the point: The wire service reports that an entire plane was diverted on Sunday after a fight broke out over a passenger's right to recline her seat.

For the record, the maker of the device tells USA Today this is the first time it has heard of anything like this happening with its product."

As if flying is not already unpleasant enough....

I think that people who recline their seat into the face of the person seated behind them on a airplane are narcissistic sociopaths.
