Your carefree beach days are numbered

Your carefree beach days are numbered BY MIYOKO SAKASHITA, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR — 07/04/18

[…]

There’s a pretty good chance you’ll encounter plastic litter or plastic pellets on the beach — junk that’s adding to the growing mass of plastic pollution in our oceans. And unfortunately the sunscreen you’re slathering on your body might contain two common chemicals, oxybenzone and octinoxate, that kill coral reefs.

Federal judge rejects Perdue bid to recoup legal fees from Waterkeeper Alliance

Waterkeeper Alliance suit cost $3 million

Aug. 27, 2013 Written by Jeff Montgomery The News Journal

In a case closely watched by citizen advocacy and farm groups, a federal judge on Tuesday rejected a farm industry bid to collect $3 million in legal fees from a group that sued Perdue Farms and a family farm in 2010 over Pocomoke River water pollution.

U.S. District Court Judge William M. Nickerson tossed out the Waterkeeper Alliance’s Clean Water Act case last year, concluding in an opinion that the action was flawed and “not pursued or litigated as well as it could have been.”

“It is most unfortunate that so much time and so many resources were expended on this action that accomplished so little,” Nickerson wrote, adding later: “That, however, is not the same as concluding that the underlying claim was ‘frivolous, unreasonable or without foundation,’ or ever clearly became so.”

The Waterkeeper Alliance sued Perdue and the Alan and Kristin Hudson Farm near Berlin, Md., using a provision of the Clean Water Act to seek enforcement for what the group viewed as uncontrolled releases of poultry wastes... http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20130828/NEWS/308280047/Federal-judge-rejects-Perdue-bid-recoup-legal-fees?utm_source=Chesapeake+Bay+News&utm_campaign=800ca8d743-Chesapeake_Bay_News4_23_2013&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_71ced15df1-800ca8d743-61679805

Say NO to phone books Updated – July 9, 2013 http://tinyurl.com/mpt6xcz

What will it take to stop the publishers of “yellowbook” and phone directories to stop littering my front yard with its unwanted phone directory delivery?

Getting junk mail-spammers to stop delivering unwanted mail, marketing and promotional materials is so incredible hard…

I just had to go out in my front yard and remove a large piece of trash. Guess what, it was a phone directory.

I have called, sent letters, faxed letters, and e-mailed various companies for quite a number of years to get them to stop littering my yard with trash and yet the problem continues.

On September 13, 2012, I registered with www.yellowpagesoptout.com to stop delivery of the unwanted phone directories, including the Westminster Carroll County directory that I subsequently received on March 14, 2013; and the Verizon Westminster 2013 – 2014 business book 032 840, I had discarded in front driveway on July 8, 2013.

I received the phone directories on July 8, 2013 and March 14, 2013, in spite of the fact that on September 13, 2012; I had opted-out of receiving any directories on www.yellowpagesoptout.com.

At that time I received an e-mail which assured me, “The National Yellow Pages Opt-Out Site received your request on September 13, 2012 at 12:38 pm.

“Your selection:  - No copies of Reisterstown – Ziplocal;  - No copies of Westminster-Carroll – Yellowbook;  - No copies of Baltimore Gr(Y)(B) – SuperMedia;  - No copies of Hanover Plus - Dex One;  - No copies of Carroll County-PATUX - Patuxent Directories;  - No copies of Hanover C - Dex One;  - No copies of Westminster – SuperMedia, Will be sent to your address…”

Since I registered, I have read various media sources that have suggested that www.yellowpagesoptout.com is a ruse and obfuscation for the purposes of thwarting legislation to ban the irritating and frustrating littering and waste that occurs when the unwanted and unsolicited phone directories are distributed willy-nilly and haphazardly throughout communities.

All too often the directories are left unclaimed and end-up in the storm water management system, clogging-up drains, storm gutters, fields, yards, streets and highways.

I have also noticed that many paper recyclers specifically prohibit receiving phone directories. I’m not sure why.

As much as I dislike nanny-state government; I almost wish the city would pass an ordinance prohibiting the practice of distributing unwanted and unsolicited trash on properties throughout the city.

In recent years, much of the telecommunications industry has earned a well-deserved reputation for boorish behavior, mismanagement – as in too big to manage, predatory business and marketing practices, poor communications services and even worse customer service. The unwanted and unsolicited phone directories which periodically litter my front yard are the icing on the cake.

I would like for the phone companies to please stop all deliveries of all directories. The most recent unwanted directory only made it in my house long enough to double-check the opt-out information. It will now immediately go into the recycling bin. I cannot just drive by your house and throw unwanted materials on your property.

Please stop.

You know, I cannot just drive by the homes of the folks involved with “yellowbook” and throw unwanted materials on their property. I would be arrested.

I wish the phone directory publishers would stop throwing trash throughout the community. It accumulates in the roadways, on sidewalks and the gutters, on private property and public parks. It is wrong.

Thank you for your time.

Washington Times: 'Little guy' wins high court fight with EPA

Washington Times: 'Little guy' wins high court fight with EPA

CNN by: Bill Mears Wednesday, March 21, 2012

In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court gave an Idaho couple another chance Wednesday to challenge a government ruling barring construction of their dream house on property the Environmental Protection Agency deemed to be a "wetland." Photo Credit: AP http://times247.com/articles/little-guy-wins-high-court-fight-with-epa

The Supreme Court gave an Idaho couple another chance Wednesday to challenge a government ruling barring construction of their "dream house," an important property rights defeat for the Obama administration.

The justices unanimously ruled Chantell and Mike Sackett can appeal a compliance order that said wetlands on their residential lot were improperly filled with rocks and dirt. A building permit was then revoked. ...

"The Supreme Court has come to our rescue," Mike Sackett said just after the decision was issued, "and reminded the EPA — and everyone — that this is still America, and Americans still have rights under the Constitution."

On our way up Rte 17 stopped by Sewee Visitor & Ed Ctr in F Marion Natl Forest

Ag Environmentalism, Enviro, US st South Carolina, US st South Carolina 2012 March, Dayhoff Travel, Dayhoff photos travel,

Friday, March 9, 2012

We traveled from Charleston, South Carolina to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

We left the Best Western Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina at approximately 10:45 A.M. We took Route 17 north towards Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

We traveled through the Francis Marion National Forest - http://www.fs.usda.gov/scnfs/.

We stopped at the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center - http://www.fws.gov/seweecenter/

While researching the Marion National Forest, I came across a fascinating newspaper article, “Francis Marion has hidden cameras, Forest Service says devices used for law enforcement,” BY TONY BARTELME, The Post and Courier, Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2010/mar/16/francis-marion-has-hidden-cameras/

We then visited and explored McClellanville, South Carolina

Friday, March 9, 2012 I enjoyed my fried shrimp and red rice at Graham's restaurant McClellanville SC: http://babylonfluckjudd.blogspot.com/2012/03/i-enjoyed-my-fried-shrimp-and-red-rice.html T. W. McClellanville SC city hall 3/9/12 Labels: Dayhoff Daily Photoblog, Dayhoff photos, Governance City Hall photographs, US st South Carolina, US st South Carolina 2012 March, http://www.townofmcclellanville-sc.net/ According to DiscoverSouthCarolina.com, “McClellanville is situated on the Atlantic coast, on land surrounded by Francis Marion National Forest and has traditionally derived its livelihood from the sea and coastal marshes by fishing, shrimping and oystering. In 1989 the town was devastated by the full brunt of Hurricane Hugo, which destroyed homes, fishing boats, trees and much of the picturesque character of this historic fishing village. The stronger north side of the eyewall passed directly over the village. Residents who took refuge in Lincoln High School, which had been designated as a storm shelter, were surprised to be flooded by a storm surge which threatened to drown all the refugees. Helping one another, in pitch darkness, they were all able to get into the space above the false ceilings in the building and no one was lost.” http://www.discoversouthcarolina.com/cities/159
