Slate: The Uncanceling of Chick-fil-A

The Uncanceling of Chick-fil-A

Why did so many people forget to boycott the infamous chicken chain?

By RUTH GRAHAM MARCH 07, 2019 https://slate.com/human-interest/2019/03/chick-fil-a-boycott-liberals-forgot-chicken-too-good.html

It’s hard to stay mad at a ubiquitous and popular brand, especially when it does the bare minimum to stop pissing you off.

[…]

But over the years, the furor has faded, and many progressives have slunk back through the restaurant’s doors. “For several years, the only time you’d catch an LGBTQ person or an ally at Chick-fil-A was for a protest,” the editorial director of HuffPost Personal, Noah Michelson, wrote last year in an essay lamenting the slump in resolve. “For some strange reason I still don’t fully understand, some queer people and their friends and families began eating at Chick-fil-A again and are still eating there.” A Daily Beast columnist called for queer people to “forgive Chick-fil-A” in 2015, citing the Supreme Court decision that year that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. It’s legal, she argued, so who cares what Dan Cathy thinks? When Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted last June—Pride Month—about ordering from the restaurant, he later confessed that he “completely forgot about their background.”

How did Chick-fil-A gradually become uncanceled? For one, the chain has gotten harder for urban progressives to avoid. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in 2012 that the company’s values “are not Chicago values,” but there are now multiple Chick-fil-A outlets in Chicago, and they seem to be thriving. The first New York City Chick-fil-A opened in 2015, and the chain opened “the world’s largest Chick-fil-A” in downtown Manhattan a few years later. It is now planning its first outlets in Boston and Brooklyn. Anecdotally, many progressives still feel vaguely guilty about eating at Chick-fil-A—but they eat there anyway, citing factors like convenience, picky kids, and the universally acknowledged excellence of its food compared with fast-food competitors.

Carroll County Food Sunday presents the 3rd Annual Farm to Table Brunch

July 5, 2018

CCFS announces the 3rd Annual Farm to Table Brunch at John Street Quarters, Westminster Saturday, July 14, 2018 Rain or Shine

The brunch will be held at John Street Quarters, the social hall for the Westminster Fire Company, 28 John St, Westminster, MD 21157, website: www.johnstreetquarters.com/

Westminster, MD - Carroll County Food Sunday has announced the return of the Farm to Table Brunch, a FUNdraising event to support CCFS's Veggie Voucher Program. The event will now be at the Westminster City Fire Department’s John Street Quarters, a climate-controlled venue with even more seating.

The buffet brunch will feature dishes created by award-winning chef Melissa Fordham from Blue Bistro Restaurant. Each offering will be made with ingredients grown or baked by local Farmers’ Market producers. Even the centerpieces will be from a local farm, with Tierra Blooms crafting the floral arrangements.

There will be 2 seating's, 9 AM and 11:00 AM, featuring culinary treats including:

Assorted Gourmet Quiche
Fresh Corn Pancake with bacon marmalade
Parmesan Stewed Tomatoes
Gazpacho
Balsamic Zucchini Cous Cous
French Toast Casserole
Southwest Sausage & Egg Tacos
Old Bay Potato Hash
Local Fresh Fruit Parfaits
Egg White Rosemary Frittata
Juice & Coffee

“We are excited to continue this event in support of Carroll County Food Sunday and its Veggie Voucher program, which facilitates the purchase of fresh produce to our community,” says Missie Wilcox, CCFS board member. “This farm to table event not only promotes Food Sunday’s amazing work, but it also showcases our community’s heritage of growing and eating local.”

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children under 10, and can be purchased online at CCFS's website: https://ccfoodsunday.org/. The event is sponsored by MarketWorks and Dr. Faye Pappalardo, with additional sponsorships available. For more information, contact Frank Baylor at baylorcad@comcast.net or 443.340.2061.

Proceeds from the Farm to Table Brunch will help support Carroll County Food Sundays nutrition efforts including the Veggie Voucher Program.

Thanks and come hungry and bring your friends!

BTW, Carroll County Food Sunday I will be at the Downtown Westminster Farmers Market 8:30 to noon on Saturday 7-7-18 and can register you there.

According to its website, Carroll County Food Sunday “distributes a weekly, nutritionally balanced grocery package that is predicated on household size and is meant to last 3-4 days. It includes meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, breads, and milk. Over 400 families a week are served at our Westminster, Eldersburg, and Taneytown locations.

In an email interview, Frank Baylor, a past president of Food Sunday said that Food Sunday “started around 1982 from the trunk of Mr. Jollie's car and has grown to the point where 8,000 lbs. of food are distributed each week. 250 to 400 families are aided each week…”

“For the sake of human decency, feeding the poor and the hungry people of Carroll County must be a concern for all of us who are not hungry,” wrote Jollie, according to the Food Sunday website. “To know hunger exists and to do nothing is the shame and bane of human life.” Jollie encouraged the religious community to collect food at their Sunday services for distribution through a county wide food bank network that was appropriately incorporated as “Food Sunday.”

The operating budget for CCFS is “supported by community fund-raisers and direct mail solicitation of county residents. We are grateful for the churches, individuals, school groups, and service organizations that raise donations independently on our behalf, and for the local grocers that donate baked goods. Carroll County Government provides donated warehouse space in Westminster and utilities….

“Food drives and food donations are also very important in helping us maintain a reliable inventory of nutritional items year round. We are constantly purchasing food from a variety of sources based on price and availability. Our Food Bank Coordinator compares bulk prices at local merchants with those available from Maryland Food Bank, a large wholesaler in the Maryland Region. When possible, we take advantage of special deals to stock up on essential food supplies that can be held in reserve until needed.

Carroll County Food Sunday is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of representatives of all sectors of the community. Its daily operations are managed by two part-time employees – Dennis Fahey, Food Bank Administrator and Ed Leister, Executive Director.

For dinner this evening, Caroline, Grammy and returned to Buttersburg

For dinner this evening, Caroline, Grammy and returned to Buttersburg. It was too fun.

It is great to be alive in the year 2017. Jim Rowe had posted on my Facebook page that he had baked a cherry custard pie.

I had planned to stay in the office and work through dinner with a sandwich. However, with the information that a cherry custard pie was available,

Caroline weighed-in, the presses stopped and all plans were changed.

Jim Rowe greeted us at the door, and seated us in the back. We had a great dinner.

Caroline ordered salmon cakes, Grammy got the soft shell crab again and I went for the meatloaf. Meatloaf is a specialty dish for both Caroline and me, so we know meatloaf – and it was the best.

Our server was Tessa Howard – the best.

For dessert, Caroline and Grammy had the cherry custard pie and I had the carrot cake. It was to die for.

Frank Tunzi came out from the kitchen to say hi, and to remind us that he made the flowers for our wedding. He even remembered all the details. (I know flowers – it was my business for 25-years.)

And for a bonus, we got to see Stephen Howard, who was helping-out in the kitchen of whom, I was just reminded, is Larry L Brumfield's son. It is a small world.

It's great to live in Carroll County. Love, love, love Buttersburg Inn.

Breakfast at Applebee’s supports Carroll Co NAACP education fund

Breakfast at Applebee’s supports Carroll Co NAACP education fund

July 29th fundraising event at the Applebee’s in Westminster supports Carroll County NAACP education fund

Westminster, June 30, 2017 - - Attached please find a flyer of our annual Carroll County NAACP “Continuing Education Grant” fundraiser at Applebee's in Westminster on Saturday, July 29th at 8 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.

Every year, along with the Pehl Foundation, the Carroll County NAACP gives at least one $1,000 Continuing Education Award to a high achieving student in Carroll County Public Schools planning to go to a trade school, college, or university. The money raised from the Applebee’s event goes directly into the CC NAACP continuing education fund.

Tickets are only $10/person – and children under 12 are $5.00 apiece.

Please mark your calendars now and begin informing your family and friends.

The GPS address is: Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar, 634 Baltimore Boulevard, Westminster, MD 21157

I have attended several fundraisers at Applebee’s over the years for a number of different community organizations. It is actually a really unique experience in that the community organization that benefits from the fundraiser actually takes over the restaurant. Essentially every booth is filled with a family that you either know or want to get to know because you share a common interest in supporting an organization that supports the greater community. It’s like a big extended family get together.

Looking forward to seeing you on July 29th, 2017

For dinner on Wed., on our eating tour of Ocean City Md., we ate at Huggins #MSFA2017

For dinner on Wed., on our eating tour of Ocean City Md., we ate at Huggins Crab House www.higginscrabhouse.com at 31st St. 410-289-2581

We choose to eat outside on the rooftop, which worked out well because it gave us a great view of the sunset.

I ordered the Seafood Pasta, which includes over ½ pound of shrimp, scallops, clams, and mussels sauteed, and served with a choice of Alfredo or marinara sauce $25.99.

Caroline ordered Seafood Tacos, with Mahi Mahi. It included two tacos with a fresh vegetable blend that has been infused with a special Asian sauce. $15.49.

Our dinners were wonderful. The service was great. The restaurant was nicely appointed and decorated and quite appealing.

If you go, ask for our server, Sherwood, he was friendly and very good. We liked him.

Or ask for Emily Mitrovich. Emily is a Winter's Mill High School graduate from Westminster, who recently graduated from Salisbury University. She has a teacher's certificate in early childhood education and is currently looking for work in Carroll and Baltimore County public schools. Of course we encouraged her to to come back to Carroll County.

It is a small world, after talking with Emily, she was able to recall that she came to the Westminster mayor's office to interview me when she was in the third grade. I remember it well. What fun

We ate at The Dough Rollers at 41st Street and the Coastal Highway #MSFA2017

We ate at The Dough Rollers at 41st Street and the Coastal Highway - right next to the OC Convention Center,  after the memorial service.

It was nice to sit down for a dinner and the place was very pleasant - almost like a country restaurant.

Our servers were really nice, the food was not over-priced, and we both enjoyed our dinner. www.DoughRollerRestaurants.com Sunday, June 18, 2017. #MSFA2017

For lunch Sat, June 10, 2017, Grammy, Caroline and I ate at local Korean Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich

For lunch Sat, June 10, 2017, Grammy, Caroline and I ate at local Korean Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich in Newport News, Virginia.

We got off 64 at Rte 17 north, exit 259a. At the intersection of Rte 17 and Old Oyster Point Road, we found "Straight Outta Philly," at 12:15. Lunch took an hour. We left at 1:15 and resumed driving up Rte 17.

I got a Philly Cheese Steak Pizza. I am not kidding. Grammy actually got a Philly Cheese Steak. Caroline got the Korean Beef Bolgogi, with three Mondoos and no Kimchi. All of our food was quite good.

The restaurant was clean, well-lit and nicely decorated in a vinyl record musical theme. I especially appreciated several home-made signs that the server explained, were made by a local regular customer.

One sign explained that 'Tipping' was not a faraway Chinese city… We sat under a very large neon sign with the restaurant's name.

We always take a great deal of pride in finding locally-owned restaurants for eating when we are on the road. We like supporting local small businesses. More often than not, they have a story to tell, the food is great and the restaurant employees and servers are fun.

Straight Outta Philly was great. Our server was a local girl, who wants to go to school to be an ultrasound technician. While we were there a number of local folks came to eat, including two post office employees.

Carroll and Frederick County Canneries

Carroll and Frederick County Canneries

Sometime ago, several folks were interested in additional information about the canning industry in Carroll County. I have written several articles about the canning industry and it is quite fascinating.

A quick and easy way to get to know some of the history of the canning industry is to get a copy of: “Carroll and Frederick County Canneries” by Harry Conover and John H. Foertschbeck, Sr. and edited by Mimi Ashcraft and Michael Freeman, Sr.

The ISBN number is 0-9829344-0-8

This is an excellent book on the canning industries in Carroll and Frederick Counties.

I believe that it is available at the Historical Society of Carroll County. http://hsccmd.org/ 210 East Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157

Proudly waving American flags, over 40 people walked half a mile from the St. Matthew United Church of Christ to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Sunday afternoon to honor those killed in service to their country in observance of Memorial Day.

"We honor the people that have given the utmost to our country and kept America free," said Arthur Jenne, a retired Marine Corps officer from Pleasant Valley.

Kevin Dayhoff, who served in the Marine Corps Reserves, was the keynote speaker.

"It is our duty and responsibility as citizens, to remember these brave sons of Carroll County and never forget the men and women who know all too well the cost of our freedom, for their service to our country is the greatest gift of all," Dayhoff said.

Sykesville Art & Wine Festival celebrates its seventh year by Kevin Dayhoff May 7, 2017 Carroll County Times

Sykesville Art & Wine Festival celebrates its seventh year by Kevin Dayhoff May 7, 2017 Carroll County Times http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/sykesville/ph-cc-sykesville-art-wine-festival-2-20170507-story.html

Mother Nature smiled on Sunday and provided a beautiful day for folks to take over Sykesville's downtown and have a party. One of the many sure signs that spring has arrived in Carroll County are the sights, sounds, and excitement of the annual Sykesville Fine Art & Wine Festival.

This was the seventh year for the event, according to Julia Della-Maria, Sykesville's Main Street Association coordinator. This year the festival brought about 6,000 visitors to downtown Sykesville, according to Della-Maria.

This a great boost to the "over 30 unique and eclectic businesses (in town) — many of them have received awards for their originality and success," said Della-Maria.

[…]

In a recent release it was announced that Sykesville was named as a quarterfinalist in the competition. Nationwide, "More than 156,000 votes were cast for 242 nominees during the nominations phase," according to the release. "Quarterfinalist voting begins May 1 at www.votesykesville.com and runs through May 28." You really can vote early and often for Sykesville.
