CarolineGlick.com: Tom Friedman's losing battle

Tom Friedman's losing battle

For decades New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman balanced his substantively anti-Israel positions with repeated protestations of love for Israel.

His balancing act ended last week when he employed traditional anti-Semitic slurs to dismiss the authenticity of substantive American support for Israel.

Channeling the longstanding anti-Semitic charge that Jewish money buys support for power-hungry Jews best expressed in the forged 19th century Protocols of the Elders of Zion and in John Mearshimer's and Stephen Walt's 2007 book The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy, Friedman denied the significance of the US Congress's overwhelming support for Israel.

As he put it, "I sure hope that Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, understands that the standing ovation he got in Congress this year was not for his politics. That ovation was bought and paid for by the Israel lobby."

Tom Friedman's love song to self
  •  In the wake of Friedman's latest anti-Semitic slanderof Israel and the American people who support it, and in the wake of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's decision to tell him and his paper to take a hike I think it is appropriate to repost Latma's song for Friedman from five months back. It is as true today as it was then.

Too Good to Check By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

OP-ED COLUMNIST

Too Good to Check

On Nov. 4, Anderson Cooper did the country a favor. He expertly deconstructed on his CNN show the bogus rumor that President Obama’s trip to Asia would cost $200 million a day. This was an important “story.” It underscored just how far ahead of his time Mark Twain was when he said a century before the Internet, “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” But it also showed that there is an antidote to malicious journalism — and that’s good journalism.

In case you missed it, a story circulated around the Web on the eve of President Obama’s trip that it would cost U.S. taxpayers $200 million a day — about $2 billion for the entire trip. Cooper said he felt impelled to check it out because the evening before he had had Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, a Republican and Tea Party favorite, on his show and had asked her where exactly Republicans will cut the budget.
Instead of giving specifics, Bachmann used her airtime to inject a phony story into the mainstream. She answered: “I think we know that just within a day or so the president of the United States will be taking a trip over to India that is expected to cost the taxpayers $200 million a day. He’s taking 2,000 people with him. He’ll be renting over 870 rooms in India, and these are five-star hotel rooms at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. This is the kind of over-the-top spending.” ...  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/17/opinion/17friedman.html

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman hails China's one-party autocracy

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman hails China's one-party autocracy

Washington Examiner Political Digest

Michael Barone - New York Times columnist Tom Friedman hails China's one-party autocracy

The dwindling number of readers of the New York Times were treated Wednesday to a column by Thomas Friedman extolling China's "one-party autocracy," which, he told us, "is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people." China's leaders, he reported, are "boosting gasoline prices" and "overtaking us in electric cars, solar power, energy efficiency, batteries, nuclear power and wind power." All, of course, in the cause of reducing carbon emissions, which so many luminaries assure us are bound to produce global warming and environmental catastrophe.

As Jonah Goldberg, author of the scholarly best-seller "Liberal Fascism" notes, "This is exactly the argument that was made by American fans of Mussolini in the 1920s." Mussolini, we were told then, made the trains run on time. He drained the Pontine marshes. He got things done while Americans, with their chaotic democratic politics, dithered.

Timothy P. Carney - Billy Tauzin: K Street's Drug Kingpin

The drug industry's top lobbyist has a history of fighting and winning -- whatever team he's on

This summer and fall, as the drug industry's top lobbyist, Tauzin is once more in the center of the fray. He finds himself cozying up to a president who used him as a whipping boy during the campaign and is derided as an appeaser by his former GOP House colleagues. On top of all that, he appears to have wounded his new partners by spilling the details of a closed-door deal between the drug industry and the White House.
