Something happened on the way to the coronation

On election night that “mole hill” turned out to be a mountain—of 76,000 votes and now to paraphrase 538, Anthony Brown has a 100 percent chance of being a spectator come inauguration day.

Larry Hogan’s message of fiscal restraint and generating a stagnant state economy resonated with voters, while Brown’s lackluster campaign focused on negativity and scare tactics—a losing strategy for a candidate with support a mile wide and an inch deep. Brown’s base stayed home, while Hogan’s showed up to the polls.

With a Republican Governor, and nine new GOP delegates the 2015 legislative session just got a whole lot more interesting.

Here’s a list of the election’s winners and losers

Winners

Larry Hogan: The 62nd Governor of Maryland, not only won, he won convincingly—by 5 points. He won by doing something different. Three years ago he began preparing the ground for his campaign message three years ago through Change Maryland. He started the contest of ideas—such that there was one with Brown—well ahead of the campaign. Larry defined the narrative of the campaign before it began. We are overtaxed, businesses overregulated, and our economy stinks. Larry now has a chance to change the arc of Maryland’s statist trajectory and expand the realm of economic freedom for Marylanders... http://redmaryland.com/2014/11/something-happened-way-coronation/

The Sun sets on Red Maryland By Jeff Quinton on March 11, 2014

The Sun sets on Red Maryland By Jeff Quinton on March 11, 2014

Over the weekend I wrote about the evolving situation that started off when Joe Steffen wrote about Red Maryland the previous Sunday. Joe Steffen went after Red Maryland. He accused them of running a protection racket in the way they were soliciting advertising for their radio shows.

He also criticized them for Mark Newgent, a Red Maryland contributor, and Jackie Wellfonder, a Red Maryland Network host, doing consulting work. Additionally, Wellfonder’s and Red Maryland’s early support for Larry Hogan was mentioned. Later that week, Michael Swartz inserted himself into the situation and then Red Maryland responded to Steffen’s claims and denied his allegations of a “protection racket” while seemingly implying that they might pursue legal action.

As I noted in my Saturday piece, it appeared to me that Red Maryland’s early Friday response was a result of The Baltimore Sun saying something to them. I received a no comment from a Red Maryland contributor late Friday when I asked if the Sun had contacted them. As it turns out, there was a good reason for that.

Yesterday, Media Matters reported on the events of March 7:

[…]

One veteran politico noted that the marketing email was “just dumb” and a “questionable” decision. This same politico noted that:

Those guys were still thinking and behaving like bloggers. The Sun relationship required that they change their thinking.

Red Maryland: Desperate Dems by Mark Newgent

Red Maryland: Desperate Dems by Mark Newgent

FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2010

Desperate Dems

Clearly Martin O'Malley and the Maryland Democratic Party have moved from fear to desperation. They spent millions of dollars spinning lies about Bob Ehrlich only to drop precipitously in the polls.

So what is their response? Double down on the very actions that brought them to this point.
O’Malley surrogates are
harassing small business owners.
And now, instead of passive surveillance, Democrat operatives are acting as
outright provocateurs.

[...]

Of course, Salazar doesn’t mention that it was O’Malley who tried to strong arm state businesses into more draconian unemployment insurance regulations during the 2010 legislative session. To their credit the business community stood up to O’Malley and fought off his attempts to screw them yet again.

Salazar, you’ll recall was the guy, who back in January
slandered hundreds of tea party protestors as racists.

We are witnessing the actions of an arrogant Democratic monopoly desperate to hold on to power.

On a side note, O’Malley spokesman Rick Abruuzzese flat out lied when he said the O’Malley campaign has not been tracking Ehrlich. Here is a photo of an
O’Malley campaign worker recording Ehrlich at the Tawes crab feast in Crisfield last month. Notice the poorly hidden green O’Malley campaign T-shirt...  http://redmaryland.blogspot.com/2010/08/desperate-dems.html

An NRO Symposium

William Henry Harrison! James K. Polk! Millard Fillmore! Chester Arthur! Grover Cleveland! Warren Harding! Calvin Coolidge!

It must be Presidents’ Day on NRO.

Below, our contributors select their favorite presidents. Don’t worry: Washington, Lincoln, and Reagan also receive their due.

MARK NEWGENT

The obvious choice for a conservative is Ronald Reagan — if only I had understood his true greatness during his presidency. A liberal-by-default in my youth, I instinctively scorned all things Reagan. As I matured and found myself on the right, however, I returned to Reagan and discovered why so many loved the man and why I’m proud to call myself a conservative now.

Reagan was an autodidact. He did his own research and wrote most of his own speeches. Detractors called him an “amiable dunce” and “unlettered bumpkin.” They underestimated the depth of his intellect. After all, what “dunce” could embarrass Robert F. Kennedy in a debate and hold his own against William F. Buckley Jr.?

More important, Reagan believed in the power of ideas, especially the idea that “this breed called Americans” had the capacity to govern themselves better than distant bureaucrats. In this age of encroaching government, those currently in power may think that idea quaint. I believe it is more powerful than ever.

Profiles in Self Beclowning: Lisa Gladden by Mark Newgent

Profiles in Self Beclowning: Lisa Gladden by Mark Newgent

Friday, January 16, 2009

Lisa Gladden has said some mind numbingly stupid things over the years:

Gladden said
“party trumps race” defending racist political attacks against Michael Steele.

Last February she labeled opposition to tax increases as
“undemocratic” saying, “we have a responsibility, if not to ourselves, then to the larger community. We have to pay taxes.”

Defending her opposition to Jessica’s Law she gave the most
asinine response in the history of Maryland politics.

[…]

Now we have
this:

“It doesn’t matter if the state of Maryland is broke as long as Barack Obama is going to be President of the United States – this is great!”

[…]

See the video of Gladden cheerfully belcowning herself
here.
