‘BNE Was Here’ Stickers Investigated

‘BNE Was Here’ Stickers Investigated

I had heard of this and yet I was unable to find an explanation - until now?

Hat Tip, by following a thread that began with: Michael Yon - BNE is all over here. http://bit.ly/bh1kPt

Posted by Martin in : Miscellaneous http://pavion.net/bne-was-here-stickers/

For at least 6 months I’ve been noticing these strange ‘BNE WAS HERE’ stickers around our apartment in Yannawa.

thonglorbne1.jpg

Also around the area I’ve seen spray-painted graffiti with the same wording or ‘King BNE’.

I also noticed exactly the same stickers around Japan in Osaka and Tokyo and it finally piqued my curiosity enough to Google it. It seems that this graffiti began in San Francisco in 2006 and has certainly hit Bangkok and Tokyo and apparently New York too.

Although nothing’s been proven, the most popular belief online is that it’s the work of a prolific graffiti artist called Benet... Read the rest here: http://pavion.net/bne-was-here-stickers/

Utah county commissioner Hansen kisses horse to pay for lost bet

Utah county commissioner Hansen kisses horse to pay for lost bet

Saturday, August 23, 2008

Fox News is carrying an AP story that a “Utah county official (has) made good on a lost bet — by puckering up for a pony.

“Davis County Commissioner Alan Hansen found himself kissing a 3-year-old sand-colored horse named Reno after a contest between Davis County and the Davis Hospital Medical Center over who could lose the most weight.

“Members of the team that shed the most pounds got to watch their boss kiss a farm animal. This year, the county employees won — losing 397.6 pounds, just slightly trimmer than the hospital workers.

“Hansen was not around when his fellow commissioners locked lips with a cow over the weekend, but met up with Reno on the front steps of the county courthouse for a quick smooch.

“But not before he slathered on some lip balm and popped a breath mint.
He told the mare: ‘This is more for you than me.’ ”

20071017 American claims to be King of the Isle of Man

Published Date: 17 October 2007

Location: Isle of Man

KING DAVID: David Drew Howe claims to be the Queen's cousin and has crowned himself ‘undisputed’ King of the Isle of Man

A SELF-styled monarch is causing a right royal stir – after crowning himself King of the Isle of Man.

American David Drew Howe posted a notice in the London Gazette in January this year claiming legal right to the Manx crown.

When the newspaper notice went unchallenged, he crowned himself 'undisputed' King.

It's a title abandoned 500 years ago by the Stanleys in favour of 'Lord of Mann', the current holder being, of course, the Queen, who Mr Howe insists is his cousin.

But a spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: 'Her Majesty the Queen is the Lord of Mann – any challenge to that should be a matter for the Isle of Man Government.'

Chief Minister Tony Brown said: 'The sovereign is Her Majesty the Queen as Lord of Mann. I'm not aware of any valid alternative claim of sovereignty over the Island.'

[…]

'Ultimately, it is HM King David's goal to preserve the history and provide a legacy for his ancient Kingdom.'

His royaltyofman.com website gives little proof of Mr Howe's claimed ancestral links to the Stanley family or his family connection to the Queen.

[…]

King David speaks out

WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE IF YOU WERE KING OF THE ISLE OF MAN?

20071003 AP: West Virginia Man Tries to Flee Police on Lawnmower

AP: West Virginia Man Tries to Flee Police on Lawnmower

Wednesday, October 03, 2007 - posted Oct. 5th, 2007

I saw this the other day – and I was wondering if Don Surber had caught it also. I just checked and – of course he caught it. Nothing gets by Mr. Surber. Nevertheless, he seems to have a bit of additional information… here.

Meanwhile, the gist of the matter is:

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A man accused of drunken driving tried to outrun the police but his vehicle wasn't up to the task.

Michael Ginevan of Bunker Hill was driving a riding lawnmower on Runnymeade Road about a mile from his home when a Berkeley County sheriff's deputy attempted to pull him over. Ginevan, 39, allegedly sped away and Deputy J.H. Jenkins stopped his cruiser and gave chase on foot, according to magistrate court records.

Jenkins caught up to the lawnmower after a short chase but Ginevan allegedly wouldn't stop so the deputy pulled him off the machine. Ginevan refused to take a field sobriety test and was arrested. Jenkins then found a case of beer strapped to the lawnmower's front, court records show.

Ginevan was charged with fleeing while driving under the influence and obstructing an officer. He was being held Tuesday at the Eastern Regional Jail on $7,500 bond.

A person who answered the phone at the jail did not know whether Ginevan had hired an attorney. There was no telephone listing for Ginevan in the Bunker Hill area.

Dallas Family Sues Virgin Mobile Over Unauthorized Use Of Girl's Image In Australian Ads

(CBS/AP) DALLAS, Tex., Sept. 25, 2007

Photo credit: Through the magic of the Internet, a photo of Texas teenager Alison Chang ended up on a bus stop advertising mobile phone service in Adelaide, Australia (inset). Virgin Mobile said that it was within their rights to use the original photo posted on Flickr without authorization. (CBS/Justin Wong, Brenton Cleeland)

DALLAS, Tex., Sept. 25, 2007

(CBS/AP) An American family has sued Australia's Virgin Mobile phone company, claiming it caused their teenage daughter grief and humiliation by plastering her photo on billboards and Web site advertisements without consent.

The family of Alison Chang, who lives in Texas, says Virgin Mobile grabbed the picture from Flickr, Yahoo Inc.'s popular photo-sharing Web site, and failed to credit by name the photographer who took the photo.

Chang's photo was part of a Virgin Mobile Australia campaign called "Are You With Us Or What?" It features pictures downloaded from Flickr superimposed with the company's ad slogans.

The picture of 16-year-old Chang flashing a peace sign was taken at an April church car wash by Alison's youth counselor, Justin Ho-Wee Wong, who posted it that day on his Flickr page, according to Alison's brother, Damon.

The commercial use was discovered when Brenton Cleeland, a photographer in Australia, noticed a bus stop ad in Adelaide featuring Chang, with a line on the bottom of the ad saying the image had been taken from www.flickr.com/photos/chewywong.

September 24th, 2007

Please join me in a celebration of the semicolon.

Hat Tip: About.com – Grammar & Composition: http://grammar.about.com/b/a/000153.htm

There is even an official “Meat Loaf of National Punctuation Day.” I kid you NOT!

So please tell me; did you celebrate National Punctuation Day? If so how?

How do you feel about punctuation?”

As I keyboard - festivities are in the works over at WTTR.

Celebrate National Punctuation Day®

September 24

National Punctuation Day founder becomes caped crusader to promote literacy in schools

PINOLE, CA — National Punctuation Day, the holiday that reminds America that a “semicolon is not a surgical procedure,” celebrates its fourth anniversary September 24. But what started as a clever idea to remind corporations and professional people of the importance of proper punctuation has turned into an everyday mission to help school children learn the punctuation skills they need to be successful in life.

Founded in 2004 by former newspaperman Jeff Rubin, NPD is listed in Chase’s Calendar of Events and The Teacher’s Calendar, two directories published by McGraw-Hill.

The annual event is widely recognized. Bank of America in Tampa, FL, for example, commemorates NPD with a week-long array of celebrations and trivia contests. Last year, Rubin was a guest on dozens of radio shows, NPD received significant newspaper coverage, and the Dayton Business Journal in Ohio baked cookies and pastries in the shape of punctuation marks.

Formal instruction in grammar and punctuation was out of style when I went to school. If you were a big reader, which I was, it was sort of assumed you'd pick up the mechanics on your own.

National Punctuation Day

Fortunately, my Mom was a former English teacher with a horror of sloppy usage. I was the only kid I knew who diagrammed sentences at the dinner table - and not because it was homework.

- Grammar & Composition Guide Richard Nordquist

Basic Rules of Punctuation

As Richard points out, the problem with rules of punctuation is "like many of the so-called 'laws' of grammar, [they] ... would never hold up in court." One of my favorites to abuse: the "law" of "quote." (See how annoying that was?)

- Grammar & Composition Guide Richard Nordquist

The Campaign to Abolish the Apostrophe

It totally fries me to see possessives spelled without apostrophes. As it's happening more and more - "Pike's Peak" into "Pikes Peak," etc. - I guess I'll either have to lighten up or get myself a pair of fireproof pants.

Billiam the Snowman responds to Mitt Romney

Hello Mitt Romney!

In response to the CNN/YouTube debate, Mitt Romney was quoted as saying, "I think the presidency ought to be held at a higher level than having to answer questions from a snowman."

Well, the snowman has responded.

_____

The Return of the Snowman By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE

Monday, Sept. 17, was supposed to be the day of the Republican YouTube debate. Some of the candidates got nervous, you might recall, and begged off. Then they were shamed into reconsidering. Now they are on again and scheduled to face video questions from the public on Nov. 28.

A scan of the videos submitted so far to YouTube shows they have little to fear. It also shows that fresh submissions have slowed to a trickle. That’s probably because the debate is more than two months away. Still, with the proliferation of video and of debates in this campaign, you have to wonder if the novelty of a YouTube debate isn’t wearing off. Which may be just the way the Republicans want it.

[…]

A man who teaches English in China addresses the candidates from his classroom and asks how they can ensure that American students will be able to compete with his Chinese students in 15 or 20 years.

Another man speaks from an airplane seat and wants to know how the candidates will reduce the hassles of commercial flying.

Yes, some take the Republicans to task for having spurned the debate the first time around. And there are several pointed questions for Rudolph W. Giuliani, like this one about police brutality.

[…]

Here a woman in Dallas says she can’t get a job without learning a second language to deal with the large immigrant population. And yet, she says, immigrants don’t have to learn English. “That’s so unfair,” she says. “What would you do about the illegal immigrants which are entering into the city and not knowing the language?"

And here a retired brigadier general who is openly gay, says: “I want to know why you think that American men and women in uniform are not professional enough to serve with gays and lesbians?”

[…]

The snowman who asked the Democrats about global warming is back. This time he addresses Mitt Romney, who initially said he wasn’t coming to the debate because animated creatures like the snowman had been allowed to ask questions and he thought it degrading.

Mayor and City Council apologize, but charges stick

OREM, Utah (AP) -- A 70-year-old woman arrested in a dispute over her brown lawn pleaded not guilty Tuesday, then stood by as a Los Angeles lawyer waved handcuffs for the cameras outside court.

Betty Perry is charged with resisting arrest and failing to maintain her landscaping, both misdemeanors.

She was arrested July 6 after failing to give her name to a police officer who visited her home.

During a struggle, Perry fell and injured her nose. She spent more than an hour in a holding cell before police released her.

"I ask the citizens of Orem: How many of you would like to have your great-grandmother taken from her home with bruises and blood and placed in handcuffs for failing to water her lawn?" attorney Gloria Allred said.

AP: Disgruntled Voter Puts Belgium Up for Sale on EBay

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

BRUSSELS, Belgium

The keys of the kingdom were posted on eBay.

Fed up with a three-month political standoff, a Belgian teacher posted an ad on the online auction site: "For Sale: Belgium, a Kingdom in three parts ... free premium: the king and his court (costs not included)."

Gerrit Six placed the advertisement on Saturday, offering free delivery, but pointing out that the country was coming secondhand and that potential buyers would have to take on more than $300 billion in national debt.

[…]

Like many of Belgium's 10 million citizens, Six is exasperated about a power struggle that has left Belgium in political limbo since the June 10 elections.

Demands for more autonomy from the Dutch-speaking Flemish are resisted by the French-speaking Walloons, making it impossible to form a government coalition and triggering concern the kingdom is on the verge of a breakup.

Bathroom Stall at Center of Larry Craig Arrest Becomes Newest Minneapolis Tourist Attraction

Monday, September 17, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS

"Where's the bathroom?"

That's the question camera-toting tourists in Minneapolis are asking as they visit the men's room where U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, was arrested in a sex sting.

"It's become a tourist attraction," said Karen Evans, information specialist at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. "People are taking pictures."

[…]

Just 15 minutes into her shift at the airport on Friday, Evans said she had been asked directions to the new tourist attraction four times. Other airport workers field the same question.

"It's by the Lottery shop, right next to the shoeshine shop," said newsstand worker Abdalla Said, adding he gets the question daily.

Union Bridge Pilot, July 1, 1921.

On July 1st, 1921 the Union Bridge Pilot wrote:

In a recent letter to The Breeder's Gazette, Mr. F. M. Woods, of Lancaster county, Nebraska, told how a Nebraska printer got an auction sale and an account of a wedding mixed together.

The resulting article, wrote Mr. Woods, read like this:

"Married at the home of the bride's township one mile north and two miles east of Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, highly respected residents, of Thursday, January 27, Miss Ethel Drinkwater by the Rev. 18 head of Shorthorns consisting of four bridesmaids dressed in pale blue and carrying calves by their sides. They had tulle veils . . sired by the noted Kentucky jack Bombina 3d.

Also forty-six head of hogs, including the groom's father from North Dakota where he is engaged in missionary work, and is immuned by the double process.

These shoats are thrifty and all relatives of the bride and groom. They all gathered in the spacious dining room after the ceremony and partook of 300 bushels of seed oats, 1,000 bushels of corn, 10 large stacks of millet and alfalfa.
