Maryland GOP is "Tone Deaf": Brian Murphy, candidate for governor says

GUBERNATORIAL RACE IN MARYLAND: IN CONTESTED PRIMARY, ONE CANDIDATE TO RECEIVE FUNDS FROM REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE DESPITE RULES TO CONTRARY

Gubernatorial Candidate, Brian Murphy, Accuses Maryland GOP of Being Tone Deaf

Republican Party is Missing Golden Opportunity in Maryland

CHEVY CHASE, MD -- Brian Murphy, Republican candidate for Governor of Maryland, today strongly criticized the Maryland Republican leadership for exercising a rare clause to fund Bob Ehrlich's primary candidacy for governor - before Ehrlich has even filed for office. This unusual move may enable Ehrlich to receive upward of $1 million from the Republican National Committee (RNC) to use in his primary bid against entrepreneur Brian Murphy. Ehrlich will face Murphy in the Republican Primary on September 14.

"The national mood is anti-big government, anti-tax and spend, and anti-incumbent. So what does the Maryland GOP do? They back someone who has a record of being pro-big government, pro-taxes and pro-spending," said gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy. "Are they tone deaf? Do they not sense the mood of the country? If there has ever been a time for a fiscal conservative to win in Maryland, this is it.

"Maryland needs to get its fiscal house in order, and we can't afford to let this opportunity slip away. Voters deserve choices. Isn't that the point of a primary? Ehrlich and I disagree on nearly everything, and all I'm asking for is an open debate on the issues," Murphy said.

"Rule 11," states that in a contested primary neither candidate is to receive funds or an endorsement from the Republican National Committee. However, there is a clause which allows the state party leadership to make an exception by endorsing one candidate thus allowing the RNC to fund that candidate in a primary. A vote to endorse Ehrlich by three Maryland GOP officials has entitled the candidate to RNC funds, according to this exception to the rule.

"This is exactly the type of elitist behavior that is infuriating Americans from both parties. Maryland Republicans should be allowed an honest primary between two very different Republican candidates," Murphy said. "We must unify the party on our core principles and put forth the best candidate to win the governorship. I believe my ideas are the best ideas to take Maryland in a new direction. Is it unreasonable to think the voters, not party leadership, should pick the candidate?

"For the past 8 years, Maryland's budget has been a fraud and a disgrace. Bob Ehrlich broke records when he grew our budget by almost 40%. When O'Malley took over as governor, instead of repealing the spending, he paid for it by passing record tax increases. Now we have record deficits and record unemployment. Voters are tired of these kinds of records. I pledge to move Maryland toward a fiscally-sound economy - one that will attract businesses to the state and grow our economy. We need to get more private sector jobs in Maryland, not an increase in the state coffers."

Brian Murphy is a successful Maryland businessman with a B.A. in Economics from the University of Maryland and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. He is founder of the Plimhimmon Group, whose first investment, the Smith Island Baking Company, has been featured in The Washington Post, the Wharton Magazine, the Baltimore Sun, and other publications for its principled approach to job creation in Maryland. A Business Week article on the Plimhimmon Group is expected later this week.

The Democratic Party will also have a primary election on September 14, and the winners of the respective parties' elections will square off against each other in the November 2 General Election.

Who brought the canards to this party?” Farrell Keough July 21, 2009

Many of us have known people who married the person involved in the break up of their marriage. We have also seen this situation in which one or the other in this new marriage cheats again. It is a difficult situation, but one with which a person has to wonder, why would you trust someone who has a known history of cheating or breaking vows?

Trust is a rare commodity and one which must not be broken as it is difficult, if not impossible, to regain. This situation seems to be playing out in the Maryland Republican Party. Dr. James Pelura III, the current chairman, is under significant fire from leaders within the party. This is neither a defense nor a condemnation of Dr. Pelura – that chain of events is taking place throughout newspaper articles, emails, and letters.

[…]

The first publicized warning of events to come took place on
July 8, 2009. In that news story it was disclosed that Dr. Pelura had fired an executive director and that was the only “fact” known…

[…]

Following the initial press release, further
sources spoke to other outlets. Perusing these hyperlinked newspaper articles, one will notice that a few names continue to appear. This is an odd situation for a group of elected officials whose interest should be in promotion of the party, not in its attenuation.

More on Maryland's Missing Millionaires

More on Maryland's Missing Millionaires

May 26, 2009

When Governor O'Malley and Democrat legislative leaders proposed increasing the tax rate on Maryland's highest income earners - Republican Senators stood in floor debate and stridently argued that millionaires would flee the state. Some Senators even provided evidence from lawyers and accountants about the ease with which this class of taxpayers could legally change their status of residency.

The Republican debate was rebuffed as being "anecdotal." Over the GOP's objections, the Democrats passed their "tax the wealthy" plan.

As opined in the Wall Street Journal today, the short-sighted Democrat tax plan combined with the hefty Maryland estate tax has made Maryland a bad environment for millionaires. And they are fleeing - leaving a shortfall in taxes that they used to pay which results in higher taxes for you and me.

Maryland Republicans Celebrate Earth Day

MDGOP Announces Commission for Environmental Solutions

ANNAPOLIS - Our most treasured asset, the Chesapeake Bay is in trouble. Millions of dollars are spent each year on finding solutions to pollution in the Chesapeake Bay, while each year the reports are the same….the Bay is unhealthy and more must be done.

The Maryland Republican Party realizes that more money is not the answer. The time has come for reason, rational thinking and science to lead the way for developing a responsible approach for saving our most precious natural resource, the Chesapeake Bay.

As a result, the Maryland Republican Party is proud to take this opportunity on Earth Day 2009 to announce the formation of the MDGOP Commission for Environmental Solutions.

This commission includes representatives from the Maryland General Assembly, the recycling industry, green construction, water and sewage treatment, agriculture, the power industry as well as experts from the field of natural resources.

The Maryland Republican Party firmly believes that real solutions to our environmental problems will result from a scientific and rational approach that will provide for clean air and water while maintaining strict fiscal efficiency.
Tomorrow is too late, we must act today.

Maryland General Assembly Republicans File Taxpayer Protection Act

Bill will require 3/5ths Majority in General Assembly to Raise Taxes

Annapolis –This week, Senator Andy Harris (R-7) and Delegate Steve Schuh (R-31), with joint support from the Republican Caucuses in the State Senate and House of Delegates, introduced the "Taxpayer Protection Act". The bill numbers are SB 747 and HB 684.

This exciting piece of legislation would require a 60% vote in each chamber to raise existing taxes or create new ones. It is important to note that the damaging tax increases passed during the 2007 Special Session did not receive such a majority. Had this legislation been in place, Maryland's economy would be better off today.

"Once again, the Republicans in the Maryland General Assembly have shown their dedication and commitment to the hard-working taxpayers of Maryland,” stated Chairman Pelura. “Governor O’Malley is dangerously relying on bailout money from the federal government to balance his budget. When that dries up, he’ll be coming back to the taxpayers to demand more from them.”

Pelura continued, "I urge all Marylanders to call their state senators and delegates and tell them to support this legislation to stop Governor O'Malley and his Democrats allies in the General Assembly from taking any more of our hard-earned dollars."

MDGOP Responds to Governor O’Malley’s State of the State Address
Again, O’Malley shirks responsibility and refuses to alter course

Annapolis- Maryland Republican Party Chairman had the following comments in reaction to Governor O’Malley’s state of the state address:

“Governor O’Malley is basing the bulk of his budgeting decisions on getting federal bailout money and plans to continue spending more and more of our money while ignoring Maryland’s fiscal crisis. Governor O’Malley’s budget increases spending by $800 million in the face of a $2 billion budget deficit.

Martin O’Malley and his Democrat allies in the General Assembly have mismanaged our fiscal house and are now hoping to be bailed out with money from the federal government. That money is not ‘free’, it is coming out of our pockets and will be coming out of the pockets of our children and grandchildren. This emergency bailout money is a one-time fix. Unfortunately, the Democrats who control Annapolis believe that they can continue overspending because of this temporary, fiscal band-aid.

Now is the time for the Governor to stop raiding emergency funds and playing one-time fund transfer games. We need him to also be focused on the real problem of driver’s license security, something he neglected to mention in his speech.

Our Republican leaders in Annapolis have a clear vision to make Maryland a place where families and small businesses can flourish. Maryland Republicans want to remove the overbearing regulations and toxic tax conditions that cripple economic growth and cause job loss.

It is time for Marylanders to demand new leadership so that we can get our state’s economy back on the right track for working families.”

HOUSE MINORITY LEADER O’DONNELL RESPONDS TO STATE OF THE STATE

Calls Governors Plan to Increase Spending During Recession Mismanagement and Possible Bailout Financing Spending on our Childrens Children

ANNAPOLIS—House Minority Leader Anthony ODonnell (R-Calvert/St. Marys Counties) today delivered the minority partys response to Governor OMalleys State of the State address. ODonnell characterized the governors plan to increase spending during a recession as mismanaging taxpayers money and the governors anticipation of a federal bailout for Annapolis overspending as putting the burden on generations of Marylanders to come. ODonnell told Maryland Public Television:

Governor OMalley is basing most of his budgeting decisions on getting a federal bailout, a bailout that will be financed not just by you and me, but by our children and our childrens children. The governor is hoping to be bailed out for the mismanagement of our fiscal house with money that the federal government just does not have.

In this difficult economic climate, with Marylands unemployment rate at a 15-year high, the governor has not changed his budgeting approach. Hes planning on more and more spending of our money while ignoring the crisis that we are in. Even before a bailout comes, the governors budget increases state spending by about $800 million and puts us in worse shape.

By this administrations own actions of raising taxes and failing to reign in the growth of spending just before a recession, they have made an already bad situation much worse.

ODonnell also addressed the issues of soaring energy costs that have nearly doubled in the last two years and the need to secure Marylands drivers licenses, a critical safety and security issue.

Many promises have been made yet little progress has been shown on these matters. These issues have bipartisan support in the General Assembly and the wide support of Maryland residents.

Nuclear energy is one example that has to be pursued more aggressively in this state. It emits no greenhouse gases, will help decrease our dependence on foreign oil, and will increase our domestic energy supplies.

Nuclear energy is safe, clean, and environmentally-friendly, something we can all use and appreciate in the near and long term. It is enjoying renewed support in Washington and must as well in Maryland. Labor unions and industry as well as many environmentalists are vigorously supporting nuclear development.

This type of economic development can attract businesses and new good paying jobs, which is essential to improving our economy.

Maryland is the only state on the Eastern seaboard that does not require a legal presence to obtain a drivers license. In fact, Maryland is one of only four states in the U.S., one of only three states in the continental U.S., which does not require a legal presence to get a driver's license.

Citizens should be able to rely on government for safe roads and safe neighborhoods. But in recent years, weve seen increases in gang violence and increases in crime across the state.

One way we can tamp down on these growing problems is by regulating Marylands drivers licenses. This is a critical safety and security issue that also needs the attention of legislative leaders.

ODonnell closed by calling on Maryland to say enough is enough and urges the Governor and the General Assembly to work on solutions that benefit all Marylanders, not just Annapolis politicians.

Dixon and City Democrats Get Raises While Contemplating Layoffs

Public officials accepted a pay raise in this economic climate is beyond bizarre…

Dixon and City Democrats Get Raises While Contemplating Layoffs

ANNAPOLIS—On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Mayor Sheila Dixon, City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, City Comptroller Joan Pratt and the 13 other City Council members had pay raises approved by the Baltimore City Board of Estimates, which all three of them sit on. The move was done without identifying the titles or names of those receiving a raise. This comes at a time when Mayor Dixon has not ruled out layoffs for city workers and revoked cost of living raises for middle managers.

“Once again, this is an example of Maryland Democrat leaders operating under a different set of rules than the rest of us,” said MDGOP Chairman Jim Pelura. “These raises amount to $26,250 which is a substantial amount of money to anyone who is not a big-government politician. Mayor Dixon is talking about laying off lower level city workers. I certainly think that $26,250 might save at least one job. Do as I say, not as I do is becoming a common stance in Baltimore City and the state of Maryland.”

“We need new leadership for Maryland that puts taxpayers, small businesses, and working families first. There are several leaders who have volunteered to take part in the furloughs for state employees. Mayor Dixon, Council President Rawlings-Blake, and Comptroller Pratt should follow suit and reject these pay raises,” concluded Pelura.
