Appreciation: Stan Ruchlewicz brought knowledge, expertise and main street values to Westminster

Appreciation: Stan Ruchlewicz brought knowledge, expertise and main street values to Westminster

This is a photo that I took of Stan from the roof of the old firehouse building on Main Street, on May 8, 2004. Stan and I had gone there to gather a bird's eye view of the city. That day we were up there for hours, brainstorming and discussing economic development and planning ideas for Westminster.

Stan was recognized by many as a leading authority on planning and economic development for small communities. Because he was also an artist, he understood the value of a vibrant arts and culture presence in a community and he was good at thinking out of the box. He had a wonderful sense of humor and he clearly understood that it was not good enough to be the best, you had to be nice, and Stan was one of the nicest public officials I have ever worked with in my forty-years of working with the public.

I'm really sad about Stan's passing. It is a great personal loss for me and a huge loss for the Westminster and Maryland.

Stan Ruchlewicz, the City of Westminster's administrator of economic development and Main Street manager, died June 5.

The news in Westminster spread quickly Tuesday that he had suffered a heart attack earlier in the day.

Ruchlewicz came to Westminster in May 2001 from Havre de Grace, where he had been hired in 1989 as the town's director of planning and zoning. During his time there, he worked with then-mayor, now Harford County Executive David Craig…. Monday night approximately 60 Carroll County volunteer firefighters from Westminster, New Windsor, Pleasant Valley, Reese, Manchester, Lineboro and Taneytown responded to a single-alarm fire at 164 West Main St. in Westminster. Westminster City Police also responded.
Chief 3 was in command. There were no injuries reported. The fire was placed under control at 12:20 a.m.
Units remained on the scene for overhaul until after 2 a.m., when Chief 3 terminated command but remained on the scene with Chief 10 for wrap-up details.
According to Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 spokesperson Robin Stansbury, the fire appears to have possibly started in the second-floor kitchen. The fire remains under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office.
No damage estimates were immediately available. The Carroll County Chapter of the American Red Cross was on the scene to assist the victims of the fire.

Dinner at Harry’s Main Street Grille in Westminster Maryland

Dinner at Harry’s Main Street Grille in Westminster Maryland

My family had dinner at Harry’s this evening (last Saturday, May 28, 2011.)  In addition to the delicious traditional food we have come to love and enjoy, the venerable Main Street Westminster restaurant has added some great new items on, literally, a new menu.  I had the new veggie sandwich, which was delightful.  And we got to visit with a number of friends and neighbors.

Check Harry’s out next time you anywhere near Westminster.  The servers are fun and friendly – and from the local community.  It is locally owned; and for three generations, the Sirinakis family has supported the community – especially art and cultural events.

The prices are quite reasonable and all the money you spend at Harry’s stays in Carroll County; supports local workers, and the local community.

Founded in 1946, Harry's Main Street Grille has become a dining landmark in downtown Westminster. Now in its third generation of ownership by the Sirinakis family, Harry's offers a great selection of American cuisine including burgers, paninis, wraps and pastas.

Their famous hot dogs are served Coney Island style with chili, mustard and onions, but definitely not sauerkraut!

Customers who absolutely must insist on having sauerkraut on their hot dogs will have to pay $85 for it in accordance with Harry's longstanding policy... More: http://westminster.patch.com/listings/harrys-main-street-grille

History of Giulianova Groceria, 11 E. Main St. in Westminster, MD

December 27, 2006

Giulianova Groceria, http://www.brothersun.biz/history.html: Opened in 1986 by Tony D'Eugenio, Giulianova has been a cornerstone of downtown Westminster's Main Street community for two decades, serving the town's Italian grocery needs.

Bill Schroeder bought the store from Tony in the summer of 2003. While the line of ethnic foods has greatly expanded, Bill has never deviated from the principle of selecting the finest quality Italian goods for Giulianova's customers.

The hoagies are the same as the day the doors opened in 1986, that is to say, they are still the best in town. The lasagnas, sauces, and other products produced in the store are derived from the tradition passed down by Mama D'Eugenio.

After handing them down to her son Tony, she was more than happy to share them with Bill.  Don't bother driving to Philadelphia, New York, or even Baltimore. Giulianova has been, and will be your source for the finest Italian goods, right in your backyard!
