Dean Minnich: A few reasons why you'd fire a good employee

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2010

A few reasons why you'd fire a good employee

During the past week, the county has engaged in the process of letting a few good employees go, their contracts terminated with severance pay.

The natural questions is, why would commissioners on their way out the door fire people?  Why not let the new commissioners assess the abilities of the employees, and decide whether to keep them or cut them loose? Is this a case of paying off political pals at taxpayer expense?

I had to consider the substance and the appearance of the situation before I was able to take action. I am satisfied that the best interests of both the public and the employees were served with the termination of their contracts. Why?

For starters, you can look up the county government web site and check out the video for Dec. 1 meeting. Close to the end, we discuss the merits of such an action, and bottom line is, it was why the contracts were offered in the first place, and it was time to wrap it up. It was the legal, ethical and honorable thing to do...  http://www.deanminnich.com/2010/12/few-reasons-why-youd-fire-good-employee.html

Kevin Dayhoff: Bob Ehrlich’s loss in MD has silver lining for MD GOP

Kevin Dayhoff: Bob Ehrlich’s loss in MD has silver lining for MD GOP

Bob Ehrlich’s loss in MD has silver lining for MD GOP

That is the contention of Kevin Dayhoff writing in The Tentacle today.   Mr. Dayhoff’s good column titled “The Republican Farm Team” begins with a discussion of the successes achieved by Republicans in most states.

In the days following the November 2 state and national midterm elections, pundits have superficially opined at great length as to the depth and meaning of the phoenix-like resurgence of the Republican Party on the national level.

Beyond the media bright lights and glamour focused on the national contests, the number of Republicans voted into local and state offices lends us a better fundamental nuts and bolts gauge for the future of the GOP.
Read the stats on what was achieved.  This is a good article to keep for future reference.
Dayhoff then tells us what he and others think went wrong in Maryland.  Many believe it all boils down to putting all of one’s eggs in the ‘rock star’ basket—the rock star being Bob Ehrlich (in some peoples’ eyes!)…

Union Bridge - A pair of trousers was stolen

Union Bridge Pilot, December 3, 1920.

Union Bridge - A pair of trousers was stolen early in the evening from the wash line of Mrs. John Pittinger about a week ago.

We were under the impression that thievery was entirely confined to booze the past year or two.

New Windsor - It is rumored that robbers have entered, or attempted to enter, several houses in town in the recent past, and that they visited the home of Erscie Benedict last Saturday night during the absence of the family, getting away with a supply of their butchering stuff, consisting of sausage, pudding, &c.

Should they continue on their rounds, it is hoped that may get all that is due them.

The miserable condition of the road leading from Oakland Mills to the Liberty pike

Call the attention of the County Commissioners to the miserable condition of the road leading from Oakland Mills to the Liberty pike

Democratic Advocate, December 3, 1898

Haight Items—By request of persons who travel the road leading from Oakland Mills to the Liberty pike, we call the attention of the County Commissioners to the miserable condition of said road, especially through the property of Mr. B. F. Bennett, and near the residence of Mr. T. S. Clark.

Those two places are well-nigh impassible, and not only a disgrace to the community but also to the county.

It is rather late to mend roads we admit, at least with dirt, but surely stones enough can be gotten nearby to fill these monster mud holes, and at very little cost now, but if it is not done, and accidents occur at those places, which will be unavoidable, this county will have to pay damages.

We doubt if there has been for years a place on any road in the county in such a miserable condition. We hope the attention of the Commissioners will be called to this matter and the road mended at once.

Democratic Advocate, December 3, 1898.

Tom Zirpoli: Interactions help teach diversity

Tom Zirpoli: Interactions help teach diversity

I guess all minorities in America have their time in history when they are treated poorly by others because they are different. The events of 9/11 made it difficult for many American-Muslims because some Americans like to make generalizations about people they don't know.

Most generalizations about specific groups are not accurate, of course. For example, one of the many myths about undocumented immigrants is that they are the cause of crime in cities along the American-Mexican border. Not true, according to the FBI. Most cities on the American-Mexican border have significantly lower crime rates than most other American cities. But you can't beat a good crime story to build up fear of people who look different from us…  http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/opinion/columnists/article_11839ba6-fc8c-11df-ac15-001cc4c03286.html

Baltimore Schools, a Mission for Andres Alonso

A Mission to Transform Baltimore’s Beaten Schools

BALTIMORE — For years, this city had one of the worst school systems in the country. Fewer than half its students graduated, enrollment had fallen precipitously and proficiency levels were far below the national average.

Monica Lopossay for The New York Times: At Green Street Academy, Sandra Meekins, a special education teacher, tries to engage her students with boisterous discussions.

Article by By SABRINA TAVERNISE Published: December 1, 2010  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/02/education/02baltimore.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all

In 2007, the school board hired Andres Alonso, a Cuban immigrant with a Harvard degree and strong views on how to change things. In three years, he pushed through a sweeping reorganization of the school system, closing failing schools, slashing the central office staff by a third and replacing three-quarters of all school principals...  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/02/education/02baltimore.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all

THE RIGHT PLAN FOR THE FUTURE? OR A KNEE JERK REACTION? http://frederick.want2dish.com/articles/318/stir_it_up/editorial/2010/12/02/the_right_plan_for_the_future_or_a_knee_jerk_reaction

On Monday, Dec. 6, the Mt. Airy Town Council will render its decision on the controversial I-70 annexation request.

Mt. Airy is no stranger to annexation controversy.  However, this time it appears the tables are turned. For the most part, those who have always fought against annexation, support the I-70 annexation. Those who have been proponents of annexations in the past are extremely skeptical and are still waiting for answers to their concerns.

According to the Carroll County Times, the rezoning of a 600-acre area south of I-70 for business and industrial purposes was part of a draft comprehensive plan also known as Pathways to Carroll’s Future Landscape...  http://frederick.want2dish.com/articles/318/stir_it_up/editorial/2010/12/02/the_right_plan_for_the_future_or_a_knee_jerk_reaction

The Republican Farm Team

December 1, 2010

Kevin E. Dayhoff

Writing for the Oregon Statesman, my Capitolbeat reporters’ association colleague, Peter Wong, called the November midterm elections a political hurricane when he recently reported on a presentation by Tim Storey, a senior fellow with the National Conference of State Legislatures...

[...]

Besides, I have never been a fan of the “great person” theory of history.

In Ms. Bykowicz’ article she quotes Mr. Murphy to wisely note: “We turned a pretty good election into a defeat,” Murphy said, describing how Ehrlich's loss overshadowed the local gains. “It's our own fault. We focused all our attention like a laser on one person, one position. And we've got to stop doing that.”

In Carroll and Frederick counties, Republican leadership appears to be much more public policy fundamentals-driven than that of the cult of personality.

According to Ms. Bykowicz, “When … officials are sworn in next month, 15 of the state's 23 counties will be run at the local level by Republicans. Nine of those won't have a single Democrat in their governing body – a phenomenon Republican blogger Richard Cross described as ‘Maryland's red underbelly.’ ”

Or what I refer to as the Republican farm team.

However, to paraphrase my McDaniel College political science professor, Dr. Herb Smith, “Now comes the hard part – governing.”

Never Forgive A Traitor - Hanoi Jane Fonda

Never Forgive A Traitor
For those of you too young to remember Hanoi Jane is a bad person and did some terrible things during the Vietnam war.  Things that can not be forgiven!!!!

For those who served and/or died. . .
NEVER FORGIVE A TRAITOR. SHE REALLY WAS A TRAITOR!!

And now OBAMA wants to honor her......!!!!

In Memory of LT. C.Thomsen Wieland  who spent 100 days at the Hanoi Hilton

IF YOU NEVER FORWARDED
ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE FORWARD THIS SO THAT EVERYONE WILL KNOW!!!!!!
She really is a traitor
A TRAITOR IS ABOUT TO BE HONORED.  KEEP THIS MOVING ACROSS AMERICA

This is for all the kids born in the 70's and after who do not remember, and didn't have to bear the burden that our fathers, mothers and older brothers and sisters had to bear..

Jane Fonda is being honored as one of the '100 Women of the Century.'

BARBRA WALTERS WRITES:

Unfortunately, many have forgotten and still countless others have never known how Ms. Fonda betrayed not only the idea of our country, but specific men who served and sacrificed during Vietnam .

The first part of this is from an F-4E pilot. The pilot's name is Jerry Driscoll, a River Rat.

In 1968, the former Commandant of the USAF Survival School was a POW in Ho Lo Prison the ' Hanoi Hilton.'

Dragged from a stinking cesspit of a cell, cleaned, fed, and dressed in clean PJ's, he was ordered to describe for a visiting American 'Peace Activist' the 'lenient and humane treatment' he'd received.

He spat at Ms. Fonda, was clubbed, and was dragged away.  During the subsequent beating, he fell forward
on to the camp Commandant 's feet, which sent that officer berserk.

In 1978, the Air Force Colonel still suffered from double vision (which permanently ended his flying career) from the Commandant's frenzied application of a wooden baton.

From 1963-65, Col. Larry Carrigan was in the 47FW/DO (F-4E's). He spent 6 years in the 'Hanoi Hilton',,, the first three of which his family only knew he was 'missing in action'. His wife lived on faith that he was still alive.  His group, too, got the cleaned-up, fed and clothed routine in preparation for a 'peace delegation' visit.

They, however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that they were alive and still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper, with his Social Security Number on it , in the palm of his hand.

When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man's hand and asking little encouraging snippets like: 'Aren't you sorry you bombed babies?' and 'Are you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors?' Believing this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper.

She took them all without missing a beat.. At the end of the line and once the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the officer in charge and handed him all the little pieces of paper..

Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Colonel Carrigan was almost number four but he survived, which is the only reason we know of her actions that day.

I was a civilian economic development advisor in Vietnam , and was captured by the North Vietnamese communists in South Vietnam in 1968, and held prisoner for over 5 years.

I spent 27 months in solitary confinement; one year in a cage in Cambodia ; and one year in a 'black box' in Hanoi My North Vietnamese captors deliberately poisoned and murdered a female missionary, a nurse in a leprosarium in Ban me Thuot , South Vietnam , whom I buried in the jungle near the Cambodian border. At one time, I weighed only about 90 lbs. (My normal weight is 170 lbs)

We were Jane Fonda's 'war criminals...'

When Jane Fonda was in Hanoi , I was asked by the camp communist political officer if I would be willing to meet with her..

I said yes, for I wanted to tell her about the real treatment we POWs received... and how different it was from the treatment purported by the North Vietnamese, and parroted by her as 'humane and lenient.'

Because of this, I spent three days on a rocky floor on my knees, with my arms outstretched with a large steel weights placed on my hands, and beaten with a bamboo cane.

I had the opportunity to meet with Jane Fonda soon after I was released. I asked her if she would be willing to debate me on TV. She never did answer me.

These first-hand experiences do not exemplify someone who should be honored as part of '100 Years of Great Women.' Lest we forget....' 100 Years of Great Women' should never include a traitor whose hands are covered with the blood of so many patriots.

There are few things I have strong visceral reactions to, but Hanoi Jane's participation in blatant treason, is one of them. Please take the time to forward to as many people as you possibly can.. It will eventually end up on her computer and
she needs to know that we will never forget. RONALD D. SAMPSON, CMSgt, USAF 716 Maintenance Squadron, Chief of Maintenance DSN: 875-6431 COMM: 883-6343
