Brinkley for Congress Announces Senator Shank to Chair Washington County

Brinkley for Congress Announces Senator Shank to Chair Washington County

December 13, 2011 (Frederick, MD) — State Senator David Brinkley announced today that State Senator
Chris Shank of Hagerstown, the former House Minority Whip, would be his campaign chair for Washington
County. Senator Shank was one of the first to join the Exploratory Committee to support Brinkley’s
candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in the newly-redrawn 6th Congressional District.

“A victory in this election will be determined by who wins Washington County,” said Brinkley. “Senator
Shank’s effort on our behalf will play a major role in this campaign. I cannot think of a better person to
organize our campaign than someone who whipped votes in the State House,” he added.

“I served with David for four years in the House, and now in the Senate, and I have witnessed firsthand his
conservative leadership, superior constituent service and tireless work ethic. In these trying economic times,
as a financial planner, I believe David is the best candidate to represent the new 6th,” said Shank.

In addition to Senator Shank, a partial list of the Committee co-chairs include State Senators George
Edwards, Joe Getty, Alan Kittleman and Minority Leader E.J. Pipkin; State Delegates Wendell Beitzel,
Leroy Myers, Don Elliott, Susan Krebs, Donna Stifler and Kelly Schulz; and Montgomery County
Republican Central Committee Chair Mark Uncapher.

David Brinkley served as vice chair of the local Republican State Central Committee, was elected to two
terms in the Maryland House of Delegates representing Frederick County, and was recently re-elected to his
third term in the State Senate representing Frederick and Carroll Counties.

David is a Charter Life Underwriter (CLU), a Charter Financial Consultant (ChFC), a financial planner and a
small business owner. He is a former volunteer EMT and firefighter with the New Market District Volunteer
Fire and Rescue Company. He was born in the City of Frederick and has an undergraduate degree from
the University of Maryland. He has two children and lives in Frederick County. He is a member of Grace
Episcopal Church.

Brinkley Announces Delegate Beitzel to Chair Garrett County Campaign

Brinkley Announces Beitzel and Myers to Chair Garrett and Allegany Counties
Senator Edwards joins Exploratory Committee

December 20, 2011 (Frederick, MD) — State Senator David Brinkley announced today that Delegate Wendell Beitzel would be his campaign chair for Garrett County and Delegate Leroy Myers would chair Allegany County. Along with Senator George Edwards, they were among the first to join the Exploratory Committee to support Brinkley’s candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in the newly-redrawn 6th Congressional District.

“Garrett and Allegany Counties have always been among the most reliable conservative counties within the 6th Congressional District,” said Brinkley. “Just like Route 68, the road to the Republican nomination runs right through Mountain Maryland,” he added.

The endorsement by these Western Maryland legislative leaders is evidence of the growing support for new leadership in Congress. “I could not take on this challenge without their support,” Brinkley said.

In his endorsement, Beitzel said, “I first became acquainted with Senator Brinkley during my freshman term in the Maryland House of Delegates.   Although we served in different chambers, I soon realized that he possessed impressive leadership qualities. David is a very strong champion for Western Maryland and steadfastly works to uphold the conservative values and principles that I admire in a leader. I believe Senator Brinkley is the best candidate to represent the new 6th in Congress as the nation struggles to regain its footing from economic decline and social unrest,” said Beitzel.
"David and I serve on the budget committees in Annapolis and he knows how to submit balanced budgets without resorting to tax increases," Myers added.  "David Brinkley is the proven fiscal conservative we need in Washington, now more than ever."
In addition to Beitzel, Myers and Edwards, a partial list of the Committee co-chairs include State Senators Chris Shank, Joe Getty, Alan Kittleman and Minority Leader E.J. Pipkin; State Delegates Kelly Schulz, Don Elliott, Susan Krebs, and Donna Stifler; Mayor Randy McClement of Frederick and Mayor Bob Bruchey of Hagerstown and Montgomery County Republican Central Committee Chair Mark Uncapher.
David Brinkley was elected to two terms in the Maryland House of Delegates representing Frederick County, and was recently re-elected to his third term in the State Senate representing Frederick and Carroll Counties. David is a Charter Life Underwriter (CLU), a Charter Financial Consultant (ChFC), a financial planner and a small business owner. Meghan Macera of Westminster is top student-athlete for fall season

Meghan Macera of Westminster is top student-athlete for fall season

The final year of high school provides an opportunity for seniors to enjoy a last go-round of good times with friends and a chance to reflect on accomplishments.
For Meghan Macera, reflection will have to wait. She's too busy right now.
But when she does take time to look back at her four years at Westminster High, Macera will have plenty of highlights to remember.
If she wasn't busy designing the cover of the school's yearbook or performing myriad community service activities, the Westminster senior was scoring overtime goals to win consecutive state championships for the Owls' field hockey team.

Commissioners Unhappy with PlanMaryland Decision - Eldersburg, MD Patch

Commissioners Unhappy with PlanMaryland Decision - Eldersburg, MD Patch: " http://eldersburg.patch.com/articles/governor-accepts-planmaryland

Carroll County Board of Commissioner President Doug Howard said he's disappointed in the governor's decision to accept PlanMaryland, but not surprised.

In June Gov. Martin O'Malley presented a draft of PlanMaryland at the Maryland Association of Counties (MACO) conference in Ocean City. PlanMaryland is the state's long-range sustainable growth plan.

As previously reported on Patch, Carroll County's commissioners spoke out against PlanMaryland, saying they did not like the idea of handing over local planning issues to the state. They said they question a plan that suggests a one-size-fits-all solution for counties across the state." ... http://eldersburg.patch.com/articles/governor-accepts-planmaryland

Call Senate back and pass a workable payroll tax deal and other news and opinion from the Washington Examiner

Call Senate back and pass a workable payroll tax deal and other news and opinion from the Washington Examiner

Call Senate back and pass a workable payroll tax deal

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a candidate for the Republican nomination for president, has suggested making Congress a part-time legislature. Whatever you think of the idea, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has already given us something approximating it by sending his members home without a proper payroll tax deal written into law. By passing an unworkable two-month deal as a "take-it-or-leave-it" proposition, then heading home, Reid has acted very much in the tradition of Obamacare, the massive and hastily assembled health care law whose drafting errors will haunt Americans until it is finally repealed.

If America is the battleground, nobody has any rights

Last Thursday -- which happened to be the 220th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights -- the Senate passed a defense bill that demonstrates just how cavalier Congress can be with our fundamental liberties. Given the opportunity to clarify existing law and confirm that American citizens are not subject to indefinite military detention at the order of the president -- Congress punted.

Examiner Local Editorial: Metro hikes fees as ridership plummets

Just a year after the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority imposed its largest, most complicated fare increase ever -- introducing "peak of the peak" into the Washington commuting lexicon - Metro General Manager Richard Sarles is seeking another 5.7 percent fare hike. But passengers have already begun to flee the toxic combination of rising fares, shoddy service, maintenance delays and deteriorating infrastructure.

Death of an atheist

Perhaps not since Madalyn Murray O'Hair and Carl Sagan has there been such an "evangelical" atheist as Christopher Hitchens, the writer and social commentator who died last week after a long and public battle with esophageal cancer. Hitchens railed against those who believe in God. While an original writer, and smart, there was nothing original about his unbelief. Such views have been expressed since the dawn of humanity.

Gallup 'fear' poll, the GPS case and the Ninth Amendment

By: Mark J. Fitzgibbons
In November, the government made the Orwellian argument before the Supreme Court that law enforcement officials may attach GPS tracking devices to cars without a warrant. This month, Gallup issued poll results showing that 64 percent of Americans fear big government. Well, gee whiz.

Westminster Maryland Online: Reflections of a Newsosaur: Newspaper job cuts sur...: Reflections of a Newsosaur: Newspaper job cuts surged 30% in 2011 : "MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2011 Newspaper job cuts surged 30% in 2011  http...

The number of jobs eliminated in the newspaper industry rose by nearly 30% in 2011 from the prior year, according to the blog that has been tracking the human toll on the industry for the last five years.

Meanwhile, a separate analysis confirms what most of us already suspected: The proportion of cutbacks was higher in newsrooms than it was for the industry as a whole – twice as high by the calculations I will share in a moment.

First, let’s take a look at the surprising surge of job cuts in 2011, a year that many newspaper people had hoped would be a time of relative stability after five years of successive revenue declines. Instead of steadying, advertising sales slid throughout 2011 and likely will come in at less than half of the record $49.4 billion achieved as recently as 2005.

As publishers scrambled to bring costs in line with diminishing revenues, 3,775+ newspaper jobs were eliminated in 2011, according to Erica Smith, the author of the Paper Cuts blog. The toll this year is nearly 30% greater than 2,920+ cuts Smith reported in 2010.
